  I wouldn’t rule out paranoia, either by the operator or the regulator. Neither of them pay any price when sailings are cancelled, but they may be blamed if there is a problem during a voyage, so the incentive is to cancel on the slightest excuse.

        Surely the pilot actually does know what happened, and if he says he lost the control panel, then he actual lost the control panel. Pilots will tell you in an emergency what has happened and what’s going on.

        Yes the pilot does tell the passengers which is what happened on my trip to Alaska.

        The reported circumstances were that on 11 March 2024, a Boeing 787-9 passenger aircraft, registration CC-BGG, was traveling from Sydney, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand. The aircraft was operated by LATAM Airlines. About 250 nautical miles from Auckland, it encountered a ‘technical problem’ and a resulting ‘strong movement’ in which around 50 passengers, including cabin crew, were injured.         In my 9500 hours of flight experience as a pilot, 7500 hrs of which is flying heavy jets, I have never seen once, the term “air pocket” ever mentioned in any manual, procedure, practice or Standard Operating Procedure…. ever.
        
        The only ‘air pocket’ that could ever remotely exist is the one in my uniform trowser….

The two Cs in “Christchurch City” do not stand for “Cancel Culture!” I do not pay my considerable rates, with escalating increases, to have Council facilities run for me, at my expense, CANCEL (post-booking) opportunities I may be interested in.

I refer to the sudden cancellation of Irish comedy writer Graham Linehan at the CCC ‘owned’ Hagley Oval on March 19. This comic may have publicly raised concerns about gender identity ideology. That is not a criteria for my public stewards to cancel him outright and deny me access to diversity of opinion, balance, ideas, debate, and free speech.

  When you’ve got a regime in Haiti favourable to US investors, it behooves the US government to act in the interests of those investors, many of whom will be large political donors and many of whom influence foreign policy.

  I have experienced a small one on a 737 going Honolulu to Anchorage. Nowhere near like the Latam one. Plane dropped about 50 feet, but hard to tell at night time.
  Captain came on the PA. “All OK, just an air pocket” he said.

        “That black box recording should be very important to show exactly what happened… as soon as they download that black box information they probably will have solved the mystery.
        
        “Within a week, after downloading the data they’ll have a pretty good idea of what happened. In 30 days they are supposed to put out what’s called a preliminary report.”
        
        Schiavo said if the problem was an undetected computer glitch it may see other Dreamliners grounded.

        I read the instruments went dead for 3 seconds and it went into a dive before coming back to life.
        3 seconds at 800km/Hr = 700 meters so even at 45 degrees its a 500M drop. !

    There would be warnings all over the Flight Crew Operating Manuals, Flight Crew Training Manuals and SIGWX warning about said ‘air pockets’. Bulletins and entire research projects would be dedicated to detecting and minimising the effect of these “air pockets’.
    
    The only ‘air pocket’ that could ever remotely exist is the one in my uniform trowser….

    A few years ago we had an ex Singapore Air flight coming in to Christchurch, after very fast wind assisted flight over Australia.
    I have flown world wide for 40 years but never like this turbulence- crew correctly sitting on floor and holding on.
    Had to go south for half an hour to wide circle right back to South landing. B777.
    But brilliant all the same, but wow ?

The renegade Greater Wellington Regional Council took these too people to court for doing earthworks on their own property.
Because they chose to represent themselves in court rather than hiring a expert on archane RMA law, one has spent 3 months in jail before having their convictions overturned in the Court of Appeal
Will GWRC waste more ratepayer’s money at the supreme court or try to change the regional plan to state that fauna are not necessary to designate a wetland? Just a couple of rushes say.

  They had fools for clients. A lawyer would probably have been able to argue for bail pending an appeal. However the Environment Judge should have warned him a prison sentence was on the cards when convicting him and that he should hire a lawyer.

  I think over the next 9 months as the US heads towards their election we will see the crazies on both sides lose it big time.
  
  The division and open hatred between Dems & Reps, and Biden & Trump is ramping up. Neither side will accept an election loss as being legit. The Polls have Trump way ahead, but what would happen if Biden somehow wins on election night? Equally, the Dems already see a loss coming, but they will never accept Trump as POTUS.

    Hosking this morning, in his editorial piece that runs just before 7:30, said something I wholly support.
    
    Luxon is a cautious corporate-type, who wants to research an issue, arrive at a solution, get everyone on board etc etc. So he comes across as cautious and a bit unadventurous.
    
    Meanwhile his coalition partners are arsonists. They’re the “burn it all down and build something new from the rubble” type. That’s why Peters has been better in opposition than in Government … because it’s easier to be an arsonist from the opposition benches. We may find that Seymour is the same … jury’s still out there.
    
    The arsonists always sound busy. Lots of fury and energy. But history suggests they fuck up more than help (Provincial Growth Fund anyone?).
    
    Anyway, based on my own contact with Peters, Jones & Seymour I’d say Hosking’s assessment was on the mark. Arsonists, but unclear whether they’re builders.
    
    Meanwhile Luxon is a bit safe but boring, and yeah it’s probably fair to also wait to see whether he can build anything too.

  I started with extremely low expectations of this government, and they have slightly exceeded them so far. We are fortunate that non-performing media have started to collapse while Labour is not in power to rescue them.
  
  But the next few years are going to be rough as we have to deal with the consequences of Ardern’s actions and it is unfortunate that losing the election will allow Labour to avoid some of the blame.

    You would say that if you heard Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee interviewed by Sean Plunket this morning.
    
    She waffled on about needing to reform the Broadcasting Act because apparently TVNZ and RNZ have been operating on an uneven playing field. She also expressed sympathy for the Digital Services Tax bill which would see tech companies taxed and the revenue used to subsidise media.
    
    Further, she mooted that all media might need to be regulated (including online) as part of leveling the field. Worst of all she said she has had very good meeting with the board and management of TVNZ and expressed support for the current chairman appointed by none other than Willie Jackson.

        You might contend the minister should have such authority because TVNZ/RNZ are public broadcasters. If that’s the case then the minister could require one view be advanced but when there’s a change of government a new view would be advanced, and isn’t that exactly what the last government did with terrible results?
        
        If you live by the sword you will die by it. Fact is, public broadcasting all over the world is riddled with neo-Marxist ideology and it cannot be saved for the above reason. It must be sold off and true freedom of speech must reign.

        The job of the media is to accurately report the free speech of others.

  Hosking was interviewing Chris Cahill this morning, and after discussing the latest pay offer and the fact that police don’t get paid overtime Cahill made this comment, something like ”Mike, you are now working an extra hour a day and I imagine you will be paid extra for it “.
  Hosking quickly ended the interview.

Despite an apparent lack of advocates for the introduction, considerable time and cost has been spent on the revamping cycle access.

The Dunedin City Council yesterday passed a councilors vote 1-13 to increase residential rates by +19.4% and add a further $117m to their debt. Their spending is obviously out of control. These clowns all agreed that their plan is unsustainable – but then 12 of them voted to continue including the Mayor!!

Only one guy seems to be able to do maths (Lee Vandervis). Interestingly he is in charge of the Finance Committee and the council-owned companies. But the rest of the councilors ignored his advice!!??

In total, Dunedin City has $1 Billion of Debt costing $1 million per week in interest costs. That debt is projected to continue to grow to $1.5 Billion by 2027. Rating Agencies will hate this so interest rates will go up .

A status quo scenario means the DCC will literally go bankrupt soon after 2027. And I suspect Dunedin is in a better position than a lot of other local councils.

We are witnessing the failure of voting in socialists to our councils. The only option now is fire sales of assets along with an immediate stop to idiotic cycleways, speed bumps, CO2 research, and vanity projects.

  The 14 Dunedin City Councillors are elected at-large, by PR/STV. That means 14 quotas of voters, each comprising just 6.67% of voters, and therefore covering all ranges of opinion in Dunedin, have a representative on council. (One set of voters, comprising fractionally less than a quota of voters, missed out. Not bad, eh?)
  
  Essentially, therefore, you are saying that anyone to the left of you, i.e., who is not hard/far Right, is a socialist. That’s nonsense, plain and simple.
  
  Cr Lee Vandervis is a well-known contrarian. His sole vote opposing the majority decision yesterday would come as no surprise to anyone who follows Dunedin politics. Indeed, it sounds like he went against the majority view of the Finance Committee that you say he chairs.

    But nothing you have said changes the facts – under the current status quo of borrow and spend the city goes broke. Spending even more is the existing plan BTW.
    
    Use your “Hard/Far Right” labels if you must – if that means balancing the books and facing the reality that there is no money left, then call me whatever you like.
    
    Socialism (BTW) does accurately describe the current councillors – they want to own power companies, airports, forests, stadiums, railways, cycleways, etc. And at the same time fleece ratepayers more & more whilst racking up debt that can never be paid back.

      If 93.38% (6.67% x 14) of those who voted at the last council election are represented, in whole or in part, by someone they voted for, and you say all councillors (presumably excluding Lee Vandervis), including the conservative/right-wing councillors, are socialists, then, logically, you must be hard/far Right.
      
      I wasn’t denigrating you; I was simply trying to get you to see that the 13 councillors who voted contrary to how you think they should have voted, representing 86.71% (6.67% x 13) of those who voted in 2022, can’t possibly all be socialists. That is why I said your comment was nonsense, which it is. Yet you have chosen to double down on it.

John Barnett, a former Boeing quality control manager, was found dead over the weekend from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound days after testifying about safety issues with the company’s aircraft production.

The 62-year-old had spent years speaking out against what he alleged were shoddy manufacturing practices at Boeing, where he worked for 30 years before he retired in 2017. Most recently, Barnett was in Charleston for legal interviews related to a lawsuit against the Arlington, Virginia-based company.

  Probably not. However, the Left and media will make much of the tax benefit to property investors while some other Government benefits are being cut or reduced.
  
  To be fair, all house-mortgage interest should be deductible – for the country’s mums and dads as well as for investors. If the country can’t afford that, no house-mortgage interest payments should be deductible.
  
  Investing in houses is popular with our MPs of all parties and shades. That will make this debate interesting in the run-up to the next election.

      One of the accountants who follow Kiwiblog will likely be able to tell us.
      
      Also, are mortgages the usual way to finance commercial-property purchases?
      
      Regardless, if you are going to allow deductibililty of interest on home mortgages, which not on all homes – including mums and dads and other owner-occupiers?
      
      Many voters will see the Coalition’s move on this as a favour to the rich while public services are trimmed, including ones with emotional appeal, like school lunches.

      That’s particularly relevant during high inflation, such as the present surge sparked by Robertson and Orr blowing out the money supply by printing tens of billions of dollars via bond issues and purchases during the Covid shutdown.
      
      Presumably, and any tax experts lurking on the thread please help, investors in houses, such as many or most of our MP’s, make a single income tax return, unless they operate through a company or a trust.
      
      An argument is why the interest payable on their mortgages can be offset against over-all income in their tax returns, while this is not the case for the ordinary mum and dad home owner.

Bloody hell. This story was awful when it broke, person in a van rams a 16 year old school boy off his moped. Now it’s come out the driver was a staff member at another school, wtf.

A Timaru principal has offered support on behalf of his school after a staff member was charged in relation to an incident that saw a student from another school knocked off a moped on Monday.
Mountainview High School principal Kenny Diamond said the incident was “very concerning” and he confirmed the staff member allegedly involved in the incident was not at work on Wednesday.

  Liz Cheney responded to it with … “I see you’re still spreading BS. You […] might want to actually read the 1/6 report (eg, Appendix 2, pages 741-2, pages 127-8, pages 587-92), SecDef Miller’s transcript (Trump never ordered 10k troops), Judge Wallace’s finding (Kash Patel is “not a credible witness”)”
  
  I suspect the disagreement arises between Trump postulating about deploying the Guard (which may have happened, at least within the White House), versus Trump actually ordering the Guard to deploy (which didn’t happen, possibly in part because of pushback from the Pentagon, who didn’t want the optics of uniformed troops deployed around the Capitol, and didn’t trust Trump to not use the Insurrection Act).

I was listening to Michael Laws on Te Platform this morning. I think he got it dead right when he said much of the (statistically demonstrable) dysfunction among many “Maori” dominated communities can be sheeted back to Rogernomics where unskilled and semi-skilled jobs (forestry, heavy machinery driving etc etc) were heavily gutted. Many never returned to employment or left NZ forever to go to Aus. Those left behind have languished since.
