We all created this problem over many elections as we turned a blind eye to the thin end of the wedge as it was steadily slipped under the door, most recently all the luvvies who voted in droves for Ardern and then a few short years later swung over to the coalition parties, wondering where their golden girl had led them.

  Local body politics became a less important route into national politics for the ambitious. Business folk on one side, trade unionists on the other. Plumbers who could understand pipes, accountant-types who could read balance sheets.
  
  In stepped cycling mad Greens; arts luvvies who want acoustic-rich town halls, galleries and street puzzles; Maori activists out to rename the show; sports lovers who want billion-dollar stadiums.
  
  Now far, far fewer everyday folk happy with roads, water supplies, sewerage, power, school-street safety, and broadband cable.

    Many did. Hitler was famously Time magazine’s Man of the Year, and, as I have commented on before, even the Zionists had a pact with the Nazis in the form of the Haavara Agreement.
    
    Only after WW2 was this scrubbed from the record, or at least conveniently memory holed, lest any unnecessary confusion or ambiguity be allowed to enter the equation.

      Having been born during the war have always remembered what my cockney dad said some years later. If it was not for Churchill and the working class we would have been speaking German. As he put it the Toffs were all Hitler lovers. Yes there were fascists amongst the working class but heavily outnumbered. When the Cliveden Set or the Mitfords were mentioned Dad would go ballistic.         Yes, much better for Britain, in common with much of the West, to have Islamic rape gangs, boat people being welcomed in and put up in hotels at taxpayer expense, the dissolution of the family unit, high crime rates, high addiction levels, unpayable national debts, lack of social cohesion, and cities like London and Birmingham looking like Middle Eastern bazaars with nobody speaking English (ironically) and being no-go zones at night. Are you tired of winning yet?

    A fascinating read, with a warning to us in the present – all of the same frustrations with political inaction in the established parties that attracted the youth of 1930s Britain to the fascist Mosley are also evident today. But I think it’s false equivalence to argue that the media was the same then as it is now. The linked article is clearly an opinion piece, written by a politician. The difference is that, back then, journalists took seriously the duty to be as objective in their reporting as possible. Now, it’s difficult to distinguish what passes for journalism from opinion columns like the one you linked to.

This hardly supports your assertion that newspapers in the past were as ‘opinionated’ as they are today, where we find the coverage of most issues wilfully slanted towards a left wing ideological viewpoint.       The point is that newspapers at the time used their influence to push the point of view of their owners, not merely factual report the news.
      And their articles and opinions were repeated in newspapers here.

    MCos is talking about the range of big newspapers in London, which offered a range of political opinions.
    
    NZ regions typically had one morning newspaper, one evening newspaper, and their sharing of news through the Press Association meant they had a fairly common philosophy, perhaps with the morning paper leaning a little Right and the evening paper a shade Left.
    
    A lot of people, in the US as well as in Britain, were reluctant to go to war with Nazi Germany. A key reason was the devastating losses of World War 1.

  But it is a Green list MP – just a drone voting as they are told to with no responsibility so no loss to Parliament.

    That’s one advantage of MMP, the greens can just revolve people off their list as they fall one after another without the taxpayer heaving to fund another by-election.
    The disadvantage is that these kind of people are in parliament at all.

    CJames: Almost 30 years in, and still people have limited understanding of MMP.
    
    On all issues other than conscience votes, ALL Members – electorate or List – vote as they are told to. ACT is the only party which allows individual MP’s to vote contrary to the rest of their caucus, provided they give notice of their intention first.
    
    If any Nat or Labour MP voted against their caucus, they would immediately be excluded. And members on both sides of the main aisle have been excluded for “going rogue”, i.e. not following orders.
    
    I’ll say it again: when it comes to toeing the party line and voting as directed, ALL MP’s, List or electorate – vote as directed – unless they are Act MP’s

      That doesn’t sound like a feature of MMP at all, it’s a feature of the conventions within particular parties, even if they are common among many parties. More limited understanding of MMP.

        Che, whether MMP or FTP or even STV, the current systems since inception have allowed party control. From selection through to day to day voting, once aligned with a party, who have to follow the rules.

        There is nothing positive about MMP when the party demands blind loyalty, no matter what.
        
        NZ has been far less stable under MMP that it ever was under FPP.
        
        When we had simple majorities to pass bills without haggling between coalition parties, if a govt didn’t get the job done, we kick them out.
        
        1960 after one Labour term.
        
        1975 after one Labour term.
        
        Do a bad job, get booted. Simple.

      David, may I refer you to my Guest post from 2022 where I addressed this very issue, and proposed a couple of minor changes that would make a huge difference.

      I had suggested:
      
      1. All electorate MPs are independent, and so are responsible only to their electorate voters.
      
      2. List MP’s are Party affiliated as present, and can be chosen for specific skills. The Party vote creates the government, who then formulate legislation etc, however all voting is exclusive to the electorate MP’s. This dynamic requires the Party in power to create legislation that they know will pass the vote of the MP’s representing the people, or if rejected, have to make changes so it will.
      
      I have long railed against the fact that our “local MP” gets elected here to represent us in the regions, but the moment they get to Wellingon, they have to represent the Party, who have “Whips” to ensure they do. This creates a centralised control of policy, disenfranchising the voters.

  It was classic Hosk this morning when he interviewed that Swarbrick person. She was determined to read the carefully written piece from the comms team in the Watermelons and he was equally determined to get some straight answers – which she failed to provide.
  
  While these are only allegations at the moment, for this Tana woman (complete with barcode) to be stood down by a party blind to the shortcomings of its MPs, it seems like something serious has gone down.
  
  Thank goodness for the Hosk to apply the heat to the soles of the feet of Watermelons and actually hilarious to hear Swarbrick repeat “Mike” so often. And people vote for these cretins!!!

Interesting that the Green have stood down MP Tana over what looks like an employment dispute. It’s been painted as an immigrant rort, but at least so far there are no reports of teams of migrants living in sheds.

Compare & contrast with the Greens’ defence of Golly G. Methinks Tana may be on the outer within the party.

      CJ: That’s actually a serious question. In my time – 15 years ago now – we knew which Green MP’s had which Green hobby horses: I can’t remember who was who now, but one would be obsessed with planting trees, another would preach endlessly about clean rivers etc.
      
      Mad Cath Delahunty was a bit of an exception – Mad Cath, who spoke Manglish every time she spoke, usually banged on about colonization and Maori issues, and hardly ever about environmental issues.
      
      My point is back then the “social justice” issues took second place – a very close second place to be fair – to genuine “Green” i.e environmental issues. That seems to have gone now; they are all primarily Social Justice Warriors who don’t even pretend that they aren’t watermelons, i.e Green on outside, red on the inside.

Not sure how you make out that they’re a “radical feminist” party given that most of them subscribe to the idea that natal males have the right to hijack women’s spaces and identities and that women can have penises. They believe women should be silenced on this issue and subject to grotesque misogynist abuse if they don’t passively acquiesce. Need I mention the perpetrators of horrific sexual violence agains women and girls – Hamas – whom they also support?         There is copious evidence of criticism of Jews and Israel (particularly given their actions in Gaza), but of course, you have to remember that criticism and noticing states of affairs is all that “anti-semitism” actually means. On this understanding, it’s true that ant-semitism has increased.
        
        On the other hand, there are approximately zero cases of Jews being hated solely for being Jewish. It just doesn’t happen.
        
        People hear the word “anti-semitism” and they have been programmed to automatically think that this means “irrational hatred of Jews simply for being Jews.” It doesn’t, because nobody “hates” Jews just for being Jews, they “hate” (or criticise, or question or challenge) Jews because of the actions of Jews. Rightly or wrongly, that’s the basis of it, not hatred for hatred’s sake.
        
        Pretending that it’s irrational hatred for no reason at all (despite the phenomenon of “anti-semitism” evidently following Jews wherever they are and at whatever time) is just Jews letting themselves off the hook. If it’s always “irrational” then it can be dismissed without argument. As soon as it is acknowledged that some Jews play a part in the rise of anti-semitism, then they have to defend themselves, which they obviously would rather avoid.

    On the radio this morning some legal organisation was out defending the conflict of interest. They said the case was held as normal and no special treatment given.
    
    FFS it was a basic shop lifting case, of course it was fucking held as normal. She walked in and pled guilty. Now the judge has given it three months for people to forget about this case before giving out a likely suspended sentence.

Spitting, swearing, trying to get to his car etc. The school should be ashamed of themselves. I’m sure inland Revenue will be looking closely at the non-payment of PAYE and whether it is isolated to this one employee or an ongoing pattern. Especially since using PAYE for business purposes or private expenditure is a criminal offence.

As the husband looks to be the sole director it’s likely his problem but given Tana was a director until 1 April 2019 the timing of complaints and non-payment of PAYE will be interesting.

Finally some sense from the Dunedin City Council. Selling off the Aurora electricity lines business is a no-brainer when the DCC’s debt mountain is forecasted to grow to $1.5 Billion. Well done to the 13 Councilors that voted Yes (Cr Marie Laufiso voted No – she is extreme hard left, even for Dunedin!)

  It would be okay if the City Council were intelligent enough to run them like Tauranga Port Company, which is half-owned by the Bay of Plenty Environmental Council through its investment arm Quayside Securities.
  
  Labour councillors would want to squeeze it and support union wage claims rather letting it be independent and an outstanding success like that of the Tauranga port.

  I have been woken by call to prayer in the wee hours of the morning too often when overseas. They have louspeakers out over residental areas with that awful wailing. It was annoying when I was on Penang island recently, but the thought of it being heard in NZ would be more than annoying – it would be chilling to consider that we are on course to end up like Londonistan.

Vape-sniffing dog …

In concern about vaping, Florida’s Lake County has trained a Labrador to detect nicotine and THC, the main ingredient of marijuana. The Wall Street Journal reports that in its first week of work, the dog found two vape devices.

In a bigger programme, Arizona’s biggest school district, Mesa Public Schools, installed in two toilet blocks vape sensors linked to cameras outside.

About five students a day have been caught vaping, half of them using devices that contained THC, the marijuana drug.

Texas passed a law last September that temporarily places any student found vaping or using marijuana in an alternative disciplinary education program.

The WSJ says, however, that federal surveys indicate student vaping is declining.

A survey last year asking high school students whether they had used an e-cigarette in the last 30 days drew 10 per cent “yes” responses, compared with 20.8 per cent in sn 2018 survey.

In what it describes as an exclusive story it suggests the cause may have been a flight attendant serving a mean [meal] brushed a seat controller in the cockpit, and
the seat pushed the pilot forward into the controls.

    It was difficult because I had no choice in the subjects I took and not only were some inconsistent with my abilities, but the teachers were uninspiring
    Once I progressed to tertiary education it all changed when there was more of a purpose to the subjects I studied, which was to directly advance my career

Mount Erebus anyone, The level of competence in this organisation knows No bounds.

  I wonder if the ferry could tow a barge laden with EVs to keep the risk down.
  At the first sign of fire from an EV they could cut the tether and maybe blow a hole in the bottom of the barge to ensure the things all sink to the bottom of the sea (where they belong 😉 ).

    No it’s not. The hearing was merely procedural. For the sentencing, if the usual practice is followed, it would be before an out of town judge or one who has had no dealings with her. That said, the judge should at the very least have disclosed the fact that she had worked with the defendant; given that they were both representing the same appellant, it is likely that one was paying money to the other for their services. And it seems that didn’t happen.

MPs from the governing parties voted in favour of a Labour amendment in a select committee report, recommending the House reduce a proposed tax rate for hybrid vehicles.

With the bill now back before the House, Labour and the Greens are urging the Government to keep the bill as it is for the sake of the climate.
