How Should Republicans Respond To TikTok?
Should they be pleased TikTok is going to be banned? Is it about getting rid of propaganda? Why is it up to the president to ban it? Is it about more than ownership?

  As I posted yesterday, banning Tik Tok is not about banning propaganda, it’s about eradicating challenges to US propaganda. TikTok represents a place where you can post practically anything, and a place where any other user could potentially see what you post. That’s how ideas spread, and the status quo has no interest in allowing ideas that they find unacceptable to get a look in.
  
  All the US Big Tech companies are in bed with the US government, and they all push the things the latter supports, and suppress what they don’t, and that is how they keep a lid on dissenting opinion and promulgate a narrative that support the US regime’s interests.
  
  A supposedly “free democratic nation” would neither censor speech on existing platforms in the way they do, nor go right out and ban companies that facilitate it.

      While Tiktok may be censored in China (along with CNN and other outlets)
      
      Tiktok USA is a seperate company with seperate servers.
      
      Just a short amount of time watching the President of Tiktok USA (A Singaporean, not a communist or member of CCP) being grilled by congress March 2023 may enlighten your US anti china propaganda influenced views.

    What does it say about Republicans when they, or a lot of them, want to ban the thing that may assist them to get what should be an alternative message out?
    
    It tells you they don’t have an alternative message, that they are just a cog in the same monolithic political machine, and are very happy for the censorship to continue. It also suggests that Google et al provide funding to them. In fact, I believe Google is/has been a sponsor of CPAC before. No conflict there, though.
    
    You’d think they’d have learned something when a Republican President got banned from Tik Tok’s US competitors and they censored his supporter’s election rigging claims.

    In Thailand after the most recent coup ten years ago the junta banned Facebook because it was being used to organize protests. The problem was 99% of usage was people sharing family snapshots and the like and there was such a backlash it was back up again almost immediately
    Now the government is quite happy to leave it in place because if they deem someone to be a menace they can go back through years of social media until they find something that could be construed as casting aspersions on the monarchy and lock them up for years after a secret trial with no appeal

      No different than this case – banning a means of defying the government and the interests it serves.
      
      They want “color revolutions” in Eastern Europe or in the Middle East (in fact, they instigate them) because “freedom” in those places means “US control/influence,” but the last thing the US regime wants is a grass roots color revolution at home. So ban Tik Tok and hide behind “Chyna” as the excuse.

Various media have mentioned the basic clauses of the proposed ACT Waitangi Principles Bill and that they equate with the three parts of the 1840 Treaty –

1 The New Zealand Government has the right to govern New Zealand.
2 The New Zealand Government will protect all New Zealanders’ authority over their land and other property.
3 All New Zealanders are equal under the law, with the same rights and duties

At the recent Hui ā Motu at Turangawaewae Marae –

Kiingi Tūheitia called for Te Tiriti o Waitangi to be written into legislation so politicians “can’t change nothing”.
He didn’t make specific references to any proposed legislation but did indicate his strong condemnation for the Treaty Principles Bill, created by Act and agreed to in its coalition with National. “There’s no principles, the Treaty is written. That’s it.”

If only: Donald Henderson was a renowned epidemiologist who presided over the eradication of smallpox. No dummy. In 2006, Henderson published an academic paper critical of social distancing as a pandemic measure, saying it would “result in significant disruption of the social functioning of communities and result in possibly serious economic problems”. If only we’d read his paper or listened to him instead of the panic merchants. Not just Ardern etc, all over the world apart from Sweden.

  All over the world apart from Sweden? Most of Africa, South America and the middle east didn’t do lockdowns as a large chunk of their populations live day to day and lockdowns would of starved them. Interesting to note that the countries with the lowest Vax rates didn’t have many deaths. No bodies in freezer trucks parked out the back of hospitals. Something I’ve noticed in my little world, and it could be coincidence, is that the only people getting covid now are the vaxxed. I’ve even had vaxxed people tell me I should get vaxxed as they’ve had it 3 times now and it is getting worse and worse. The vast majority of people I know are unvaxxed and have had it once.

    I’m not vaxed and got a very mild case of Covid19 in mid 2023. Symptoms more like a cold for three days, not like the flu.
    
    The vaccinated wife got it first and shared it with me. She was bedridden for a week.

  Bret Weinstein put forward the idea that, considering 1) the effectiveness of the propaganda campaign, 2) the misuse of PCR testing by running them 40+ times instead of 22 times, thereby getting a high rate of false positives, and 3) the concept of “asymptomatic covid”, that there was no requirement to have an actual virus!
  He did say that he believed there was a virus, whether or not it was a variant of an existing strain or a new strain he couldn’t say, but it is certainly an interesting thesis.

  So what happened – those Mums and Dads with
  a pension house said – it is no longer having a rental as we are losing money, so we will sell the property (and go to say secure Term Deposits).
  That is why there are so few rentals now as a result of the stupid Labour Marxist policy.

    Maybe there are less houses being built, but around this area there’s a lot of new shoe boxes for people to squeeze into. Owner occupied, rental and state housing
    I don’t know, but I’d have thought the requirement to bring older homes up to a new standard would be an incentive for some people to sell.

      Assuming the new standard is Healthy Homes compliance, here is a sample of two. Basic cottages on a family farm are no longer occupied. Sound but basic, cheap rent and always in demand as they are close to an urban centre. Cost of upgrading to standard, plus many and complex other rules, just not worth it. Storage and implements now.
      
      With the HH heating rules, interesting to note some Auckland owners with new builds are upset that they are too hot. Some other new build owners are finding that HH compliance is not the same as building code compliance – more cost, unless they live there themselves of course.

There are still some puzzling aspects of the recent student protest against David Seymour that have been left unanswered. Now of course anyone has the right to protest, but there is usually a time and a place. And usually one gets permission to stage a protest (as we saw in 2022 with the Parliament protests i.e. permission from the Speaker was required, which was ultimately denied).

1. So did the student protest happen during a break time (eg lunchtime or morning/afternoon break time)? Or during school time?

2. If during school time, who gave the students permission to not attend classes and instead go to a protest?

3. Did their teachers clear this with school leadership? Or were no teachers involved and the students went rouge?

Unlike the past I don’t think there needs to be any repercussions for the students involved (after all David Seymour stated he wasn’t concerned), but at the very least an apology should be issued.

And/or an acknowledgement that the students were misinformed (eg they stated they thought they would be paying for their lunches)!

But who should be issuing an apology? The students or potentially the teachers if they had happened to instigate the student protest?

I suppose one could say “who cares” now so leave it alone, but surely there needs to be some accountability otherwise a rinse and repeat incident could occur in the future? As I said at the start anyone has the right to protest, but there are protocols and surely protests shouldn’t be the result of misinformation as it makes the protesters look a bit silly and the School’s reputation is damaged!

Youngish relative recently moved house (semi rural) which has gas for cooking and hot water.
She took over the previous owner’s gas supplier.
Has been out of gas now for more than two weeks. Supplier keeps saying they will deliver on this day and that day, but havn’t.
She urgently needs gas supply and has told them this but they take no action – there is no issue with outstanding accounts.
Is there a shortage of gas?
Or is it just because she doesn’t live in town and they can’t be bothered providing a service?
Same issue with courier company which was unable to deliver a small parcel from their small town depot for more than two weeks – allegedly due to not enough drivers.
This one was a town delivery, not rural.

If said relative has a bbq they can use the bottle from that as an emergency supply. The power companies have very rigid supply dates for LPG and will charge for supply outside the planned date.
There is no shortage of LPG, but there is a shortage of delivery drivers who can turn up to work every day.

  They were interesting, but not as interesting as the varying times they took to be delivered. That last one made it about a month after she returned home

  Police and parking wardens still use it for mailing speeding and parking tickets and courthouses still send jury notices out by snailmail. IRD on the other hand do not use snailmail if the taxpayer has a email address. The other significant snailmail users are charities. Something the Government needs to consider is what will need to do when the snailmail system collapses and any physical letters would need to be sent by courier at vastly greater expense.
  Apparently DX has been hanging in waiting for this eventuality to happen since they can pick up contracts for delivering NZ Post items.

  But RNZ at 3pm news ran the story indicating that it was Labour Party voters whosquashed Robertson’s bid for leadership.
  
  Well, it can’t have been ordinary voters…as they don’t have any say in Labour Party selections.

When I was young and full of the kind of youth that opens doors and exceeds self-examination, I met a barrister who would’ve been a bit older than I am now.

We both worked in a multi-level building with basic by today’s standard mag-key locked elevators. One afternoon I was inside the lift and just before the doors closed this person stepped in from his office. I think that whole floor was his office. I wasn’t a nosey person, though I remember seeing the shelves of books and dark furniture.

So I’m in there and he introduces himself, like a work colleague might, an equal almost, though I did not work with him, or for his office. My role had nothing to do with the law.

He starts talking to me about the people who work in the building and little pieces of specific-but-not-over-familiar information about them and their personalities and what he does and how pleased he is to meet me. The ride from his floor to the ground takes just a minute, and we stood in the lobby as he finished talking. He was a very engaging person, with an attractiveness that wasn’t so much physical as really just a warm and complimentary presence.

As he’s using his key to let us out he mentions about the importance of the security of the building, in an off-hand sort of way, just to sum up, nothing specific, totally in context to what he he’d been talking about. We said good bye and by the time I was half way down the street I realised I’d forgotten to lock the elevator the day before.

That’s thirty years ago now, and I’ve never met a person that could speak like him since. The effect his style had on me, other than me remembering our meeting, is that I wanted to be able to do what he could with language, with self control, and to be as open and welcoming while still being strong and instructive. I never forgot to lock the door again. The correction didn’t sting one bit – I was awestruck with admiration for his method. He was a busy person, obviously, and I doubt he had time to spend thinking about me for a single moment, yet his mind had constructed what to say and how much time he had to say it, probably within moments of seeing me pass by. The correction made me want to be a better person, and though I’m not at his level yet I hope I find something close of my own.

When I see people screaming and yelling and asserting their rights, leveraging their power, and announcing their status and experience, I think of that lesson from a master.

Winston Peters delivered an NZ First Party “state of the nation” speech at Palmerston North today, lambasting Labour, the Greens, the Maori Party, and the news media.

You can hear and see him thundering away at the link below.

“We inherited a broken economy, a fractured society, and a country on the road to social disaster, ” Peters said.

That road was paved with the naivety and incompetence of a lost Labour Government.

After the 2020 election without “the handbrake” [presumably in its coalition with NZ First], Labour cared more about feelings and ideology than the need to competently govern the country, Peters said.

He quoted an Auckland newspaper column today saying the Coalition Government faced a $5.6 billion fiscal hole.

The writer, Vernon Small, was right, said Peters, but he was wrong when he said that last year politicians were warned of the hole, and challenged Small for evidence otherwise.

Small, a veteran reporter, became a Labour staffer.

The old-style Peters political speech, with plenty of fire, lasts more than an hour, and in the video clip gets under way about 5 min after the introductory hoopla.

Grant: you are not “gay”.
You are a homosexual.
Surely someone who makes their living out of absolutes such as taxes and profits and finance and interest rates and percentages should use the correct terminolgy.

      I’m not.
      
      I just object to the fact that homosexuals get up in arms when others attach a different meaning to the word.
      
      A year or two ago, young people were using the word to mean weak or unimpressive, without implying it referred to homosexuals. I thought that was fair enough. One group appropriated the word and changed its meaning, so why can’t another do the same?

        I’ve never come across a gay person yet that gets butt hurt over the use of the word gay, but I have no doubt there are idiots in in the gay community that do, just like the idiots on here that do. All you need to get over yourself and grow up.
        
        If someone wants to call themself gay that is up to them, not some stupid old gits that get butt hurt over the word.

    What people do in their private lives is entirely up to them – but this superstitious mumbo jumbo should not be a cost of taxpayers in a modern secular democracy in my view.
    
    And I’d be just as concerned if it was Catholic priests or Buddhist monks. The state should stay right out of this stuff and most certainly shouldn’t be favouring one belief system over others as they are doing here.
