      Its 1 out of every 2000 turbines catch fire every year so 117 fires in 2011
      ‘An estimated 200,000 wind turbines operated globally in 2011. Based on data in the IAFSS report, we can assume there were 117 fires that same year (both reported and unreported). That means 1 in every 1,710 turbines caught fire in 2011.’

    All electric generators carry the risk of catching fire.
    I know the Manapouri power station has an entire level under the generator of fire extinguisher bottles that discharge int0 the windings when/ if required.
    
    Not sure why the wind turbines don’t have these?

      What are the consequences of these fires?
      A tree falls in a forest and no one is there to see it, who cares!
      
      But if the tree falls on someone’s head it is not so good. If it causes an entire forest to catch fire…..
      
      If risk and consequences are managed then who cares, right? It then becomes a purely economic decision. It is not like using hormone therapy on a child as a pacifier!

  The ‘article’ is actually a commercial for wind turbine fire extinguishing systems.
  The industry probably considers that extinguishing systems are not worth the investment for the relatively small number of fires that occur. This is especially as a fire in one unit appears to be extremely unlikely to spread to adjacent units. The issue for manufacturers is to understand what causes the fires and make design changes accordingly. Perhaps 80% of the fires could probably be avoided by minor design changes.

  At the rate of savings they say I could get, someone would be paying me a lot of money each year so I can realize my savings. Between my Infinity Gas water heater and my ICE car, my wife and spend about $4000 a year.

    Ditto. My power bills are under 2k pa incl electric hot water. 3 br home in Christchurch with a spa used a couple of weekends a month when power is all off peak. Plus about 400 each year for firewood.
    
    But I know people who pay $800/ mth for power. 4 heat pumps, heated pool in summer and spa year round. Still not sure how they get to that sum but I’ve seen the bills…..

According to Mr Hosking this morning (around 7.45 am) a company associated with a Green MP has form with employing migrants. There is a suggestion that a Green MP, no longer a director, was doing some work in the company including payroll.

Mr Hosking has been looking, mostly unsuccessfully, for the media reporting this. Including hoping for comments from relevant officials.

There is a group in NZ who thing their DNA is superior to the rest – I refer to the Maori cowboy.

        Exactly. What’s the implication of saying “co-governance in NZ is like Germany in the 1930s”? Well, given that the “favoured” group is Maori (equivalent to 1930s Germans), it follows that the “disfavoured” group is predominantly, Europeans (equivalent to 1930s Jews).
        
        Winston is effectively saying that “Pakeha” are the Jews of New Zealand.
        
        It’s seen as bad enough when another (usually brown) “oppressed minority” is given equivalency, let alone superiority, with Jews in the victimhood hierarchy, but Jewish heads explode at the idea that Whites are the oppressed group, which is actually the case, despite our majority.       Tell me why I’m wrong: you’ve got that ethnic supremacism, the ingroup solidarity, the staunch nationalism, the aim of uniting the dispersed peoples, plus the historical and traditional factors ascribing legitimacy and the future vision driving the current actions.
      
      You also talk of the mistreatment and unsafety of Jews being a factor motivating the uniting of the dispersed Jews in Israel: this is also very similar to the persecution and murders of Germans pre-WW2, most notably by the Poles in the heavily Germanic Danzig region.

      Sorry, I’m not seeing the difference. What is Israel if it’s not “lebensraum” for Jewish people, requiring the displacement of existing populations? Moreover, Hitler saw the dire state of Weimar Germany post-WW2 as “persecution” and retribution by “Jewish international bankers” so again, the similarities are uncanny.       Maybe the word mistrusted would be more accurate than the word discriminated.
      
      There would have to be an initiating reason for discrimination and it is unlikely that that would last thousands of years.
      
      Mistrust, however, is a conclusion of character judgement that can be assessed, reinforced, or reversed during normal interaction on a daily basis.
      That is unlikely to last for thousands of years. Human interaction is generally beneficial and usually desirable.
      
      If discrimination is the result of mistrust then that is justifiable.
      We all do it.

        You are correct there were many German Jews like this. I know one in South Africa. Although they finally fled Germany, his family were generally pro-Nazi and had prospered well under the Nazis.
        
        Those German Jews who saw themselves as Germans first and Jews second would have likely also been opposed to the anti-German communist press etc who the Nazis really despised.
        
        Still, I don’t think Israel and Nazi Germany can really be compared.

Many people at work who have had the jab have had Covid twice, a few three times, one guy four. Not a scientific sampling, obviously. The Banking Ombudsman Office is being accused of blaming scam victims. This follows their decision for some victims to own a share of the responsibility due to their actions, or lack of.

Interesting to see what risk management banks carry out now. They will not be happy if a tsunami of huge costs come their way. Maybe under some circs they can require a personal visit from the account holder, in which the risks are slowly read out to them from a multi page document, confirmed risk by risk, signed off by the account holder and the whole thing videotaped.

  Unbelievably the customer is complaining the bank should pay it all. I understand that scams are complex but people need to take some responsibility for their actions.
  
  If the banks are always liable that just means that all bank users will have to pay more fees or earn less interest so the bank can cover this stuff. With no cost for peoples actions why would they be careful?

      Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC)in the USA but this is different as its is more jumbled at present.

Emigrate to where?
From time to time, I read comments here to the effect that we should encourage our children to get usefully educated and leave NZ.
I get the sentiment, and the increased choice that comes with (useful) education.
But where to?
• Britain seems to be self-immolating.
• As is much of Northern Europe.
• Southern Europe is highly debt laden and inefficient (yeah, I know, we all are, but I’m talking in relative terms).
• Canada’s full of (il)liberal bed-wetters.
• The US is probably better than reported, but still has significant issues and it’s hard to get in.
• South Africa – forget it.
• South America – ditto.
• China/HK – getting more hostile to Westerners every day.
• SE Asia – nice for retirement. Some well-functioning places (Malaysia, Singapore). Difficult to naturalise if you want to set down roots.
• Japan – whilst kind and friendly, they will dislike you on an elemental level. Spend long enough there and it’ll become reciprocal.
• UAE – great earning potential, virtually zero crime, but bloody hot and (depending on what you’re in to) not much fun.
• OZ – probably the logical choice for most.

Any contrary opinions or other suggestions?

      Same goes for Indonesia. Active discrimination against non-Muslims. I am acquainted with a third generation Chinese-Indonesian. They make up about 4% of the population and are a mix of Christian and Buddhist. My acquaintance says the Chinese-Indonesians are the ‘Jews’ of Indonesia, actively discriminated against with restrictions on university admission to Medicine/Dentistry, Law and STEM in particular. He was one of three non-Muslims permitted to do a Commerce degree at the University of Indonesia (one of the Big 5 universities by rank)in Indonesia) against 865 Muslim classmates.
      
      Instead the Chinese were confined to commerce, retail, banking as Islam forbids usury and the Chinese have been very successful professionally and financially and are deeply resented by the Muslims because of it. Any Chinese-Indonesian is getting any qualification they can and leaving for good knowing they will never be permitted any public or government job of any real standing and in private they are pressured to employ Muslims over anyone else to qualify for subsidies or tax breaks.
      Unsurprisingly, my Chinese-Indonesian acquaintance gave NZ a go for six years with his MCom degree, with a very good job in indeed, but was overwhelmed by a sense of dread regards the future of this country on racial grounds as he saw the active promotion of Maori and PI colleagues over other better qualified and experienced candidates in his govt department. He moved to Aussie, got a job within three days and doubled his pay with a promotion and didn’t have to racially justify himself to get it.

  Only problem with Australia is that you come under the reciprocal agreement between Aus and NZ. This means to get superannuation you have to qualify under Australia’s rules.
  
  Having spent 40 years being a good boy and saving, of no longer qualify for super.
  
  So I can’t retire there, as I was relying on it to take me from an “ok” to “good” lifestyle.

The audio jack on his arm rest was broken so he disassembled it using his pliers and screwdriver etc, used his battery powered soldering iron to fix the broken joint then reassembled the now working arm rest. The air hostess brought him double whisky as a “thank you”.

Any constitutional system that gives different people different rights is incompatible with universal human rights which are essential for peace and prosperity. Whenever people are given different legal rights, they inevitably fight to regain their rights and dignity.

Does Winston’s reference to Nazi Germany apply as much to “we the people” as to a regime (government) which raises on ethnicity above all others – Aryanism – so superiority or exceptionalism becomes a major factor in downgrading the rest of a nation’s wellbeing, despite that being a majority.
Any change from New Zealand’s “one person, one vote” must mean some population portion gets more of a vote.
( That could be: Maori 5 votes times a non-Maori 1, if 17.5 percent Maori population portion is raised to 50, and the Non-Maori remainder reduced to 50, for a “co-governance 50–50” arrangement, and any other arrangement between 50-50 and “one person, one vote” must be somewhere between that 5:1 and 1:1 ratios – go figure)

But while a regime, the leadership (government and others) which initiates or encourages this “Aryan superiority or exceptionalism” can seem to be the focus of the “unsavoury” comparison, as in Germany through the 1930s, it was the general population that were the “frog in the pot or pan” (the clichtē that goes with Goodwin’s Law) who allowed the Nazi horror to happen.

People who shy away against Nazi references or claim diminishing of the sanctity of the Holocaust, are denying that for it never to occur again, or for the faintest echo of it, we need to constantly recognise and warn of the conditions from which such a horror can arise. You need to know it. when you see it. And another clichtē, “for it to flourish, you need only good persons to remain silent” – or something like that.

You don’t need to be another drunken wedding Aunt or Uncle to approve of or applaud Winston’s speech, as much of a ramble it, or this, may have seemed to be.

The clowns running Europe seem to be in a tangled argument about NATO troops in Ukraine.

Poland’s Foreign Minister says NATO troops are already there (see link below). Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she decided Denmark would send its artillery units to Ukraine. France’s Macron threatened to send in French troops. German and UK leaders saying they will never send NATO troops…..

Luckily the US has a very experienced President to make the right decisions!

So is NATO now at war with Russia? Yes, No, Yes, No….. Oh well, it’s not a biggie is it? //

We were listening to Hosk earlier talking to the Acting-Vice-Chancellor of Otago University. She said something about the concerning massive drop in enrollments over the last financial year.
Hosk was saying he was talking to an ex-student, who described the Uni these days as being… “Grungy & Scungy”
My immediate thort it was probably his brother-in-law who was there back in the 90’s.

When talking about colonialism why is it that no mention seems to be made of pre-colonial conditions?
In all of the countries that seem to be at the forefront of the ‘effects of colonialism’, America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, tribes were fighting each other for resources long before the arrival of Europeans.
The winner of these battles would almost invariably be the better equipped combatants.

    The only thing that I can think of that makes any sense is banishment.
    
    In many societies, the punishment for crime was to be kicked out of society – out of the protection of the village/island etc to fend for yourself. This was common in Europe during the middle ages etc and continued right up until the 1900s in parts of Africa, Pacific Islands etc.
    
    In the Pacific, people were often banished from the larger (more pleasant) islands and had to try to survive on the smaller outer islands which lacked decent water etc and lacked the comforts of society.
    
    Quite likely the early Aotearoans were a large group of people told to go far away and never come back.

      It is fascinating to read some of the material behind their mathematical skills at the time. No calculators. No computers, but they were able to calculate when the transit of Venus would be visible (something that happens in a 200+ year cycle).
      
      This is true mathematics.

Something a wee bit scary. In Canada, medical assistance in dying has been extended to mental illness and disability. So depression, ptsd (they have been allowing x military to euthanise). Children down to the age of 12, with parental consent can be euthanised. People who turn up at a hospital suicidal, can be assisted (and often are, within 24 hours having had no psychological evaluation). Apparently even hearing loss counts as a disability that qualifies.
It appears that the Canadian Government save up to $100m of pallative care using eugenics to deal with the vulnerable.

      That’s not a “reasoned” article. It’s an openly and blatantly biased article, of the type that we’ve so often decried when it’s done by the left in the NZ media.
      
      For example, wherever opinions in favour of assisted dying are mentioned, it’s quickly dismissed with qualifiers such as “or so the argument goes”, whereas opposing opinions are presented as statements of fact.
      
      A handful of individual horror stories are presented, in much the way the NZ media does when it wants to make out that NZ has a terrible homelessness problem, but no mention at all is made of the suffering that has been alleviated in many, many other cases.

  Great Triggernometry podcast talked about s this recently, not sure of the date but talking with a Canadian female ex soldier.near the end she talks about the expansion of MAID to include soldiers with PTSD.
  
  Also interesting was that she was sent into places with inadequate training because they needed women on the ground there (taken from her troop where she was a gunner or something and sent to go door to door in Afghanistan as under the Geneva Convention only women can search women including under burqas).

I have usually been highly critical of Winston Peters, who is very mouthy pre-election then goes to sleep for 3 years.

This time though, he’s had a good start. Hope it continues. Agree or disagree with him, he’s switched on for almost being 80.

  I have mixed feelings on this.
  
  When we lived in Cape Town (Wynberg), we could hear three or four mosques going for it across the flats in the mornings. It didn’t hassle us at all.
  
  But then Cape Town’s Malay population are a huge ingredient of what makes, or made, Cape Town a wonderful place. Cape Malay culture contributed to society in so many ways. Cape Town would not be Cape Town without them.
  
  I’m not seeing the value for NZ.

  Well gosh, if that gets taken up, I will institute regular audio celebrations of my own religion. The Church of Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration.
  
  A few bros and I formed it half a century ago because if the Hare Krishna could dance around on Auckland intersections and not get moved along by the police, we couldn’t see why we got speeding tickets. But I digress.
  
  The Church of our Lady of Blessed Acceleration has a simple religious philosophy. “Salvation through Acceleration, how fast you want to be saved?” is our motto.
  
  Worship requires (safe) speeding i.e. Track Days, not on public roads.
  
  And we give voice to our worship by playing hi-revving motorcycle audio (OK then, vroom-vroom noises – but hey, we were 17 and 18 when we started the church). We can fund raise when I am back in NZ and erect scaffolding and loudspeakers and compete with the mosques.
  
  Religious freedom for one, religious freedom for all! If you don’t agree, you are intolerant! And so forth.

I remember when

Is there enough care taken with head injuries in the Six Nations?
In the Ireland v Scotland game, somebody should have picked up signals from Tadgh Furlong that he had suffered some sort of head trauma in the 48th minute, when his try was disallowed.
He then confirmed he had a problem at least twice before he was removed in the 51st minute.
It is one area where New Zealand seem to have better control and urgency.

It’s been very enlightening over the last week watching the LATAM event unfold in regards to the mainstream news media.

Having been connected to the industry, the cause of the inflight upset was pretty much confirmed by about the 14th March, in regards of the captain ‘s seat rocker switch being the cause. Video on YouTube even surfaced on the 15th of the test itself, with the seat seen to be going full forward by itself with the faulty switch.
All this without a mention of a ‘air pocket’ in sight…

No computers blanked, no software failed. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. An RAF A330 did something similar when a camera got stuck on the side stick controller.

What is telling though, is that the NZ MSM, despite its location of being where the event aircraft landed, were incapable of breaking the story on the cause. The story was broken by The Air Current and the Australian. That occurred on the 15th March.

It illustrates why MSM in NZ is going broke. They can’t even do proper journalism if a big story fell into their lap. It took overseas news media to break the story on a story in NZ…. with real journalists in real newsrooms.
There doesn’t appear to be any real journalists in NZ, only activists.

But go ahead, blame COVID and how everyone wants to take it out on media Petra Bagust. The NZ MSM has become irrelevant and completely useless at the job they’re meant to be doing.. you had one job….

  But it seems a hostess accidentally knocked the switch when bringing a meal to the flight deck. Poor hostess will be feeling really bad about that. Designers probably thought that as the switch was for a relatively minor function, its location was not too important. So it seems these switches need to be covered or relocated on all 787’s.

    The switches are covered. You have to normally lift up a cover to access the switch on the back of the seat.
    That switch is there to move the seat out of the way after flight.
    The switch rocker itself was rumoured to be broken and this allowed the cover to activate the forward command on the switch. The flight attendant would have had no idea that the switch was there. There’s no report how the captain recovered but there is a second switch bottom left on the underside which is also available if your seated in the seat.
    
    The main thing is that the switch was broken that allowed this event to occur.

  You beat me to it. The media here will not report on the cause of the event because they have just moved on. In contrast there are excellent YouTube channels that explain the cause in detail. I highly recommend Blancolirio. First class informed reporting.
  
  BTW if I recall correctly, the pilot of the RAF A330 was court martialed and dismissed for using a personal device on the flight deck and then trying to hide his involvement in the plane suddenly diving.

IMO this is a very good interview – I posted it last week but I’m glad that you’ve posted again Chuck.

If nothing else, it at least gets you thinking.

And it’s refreshing to watch the manner Morgan goes about the interview. Often he gets too emotive and self-important, but Weinstein is too clever to let him get away with that, particularly near the end with Morgan’s attempted ‘quick-fire’ nonsense. Weinstein just calmly says “No, I refuse to do that.”

Weisteins thoughts on the ‘nuclear game theory’ is worth watching. He points out that this is now a ‘multi-player game theory’ in action (not one-on-one), and that makes it a significantly more complex and dangerous situation. He doesn’t believe humans are capable of working such a complex system.

I agree with him – particularly when you look at the players involved (our beloved world leaders).

OK. Now have a look at todays TV1 midday news where Benedict Colins comes in and says Chris Hipkins said “Racist drunk uncle at a wedding.”

On a totally different subject. I attempted to listen to HDPA on 1ZB this afternoon as had not tuned in for ages. I know she is mentioned a lot on this blog. After about 20 mins I realised why I had not tuned in for ages and will not again. Was bombarded with adverts with many being spoken at breakneck speed. I doubt if HDPA was even on air 50% of the time I was attempting to listen. Yes I know adverts help to pay her wages but should they not be limited. How people can listen to this for hours is beyond me.
