  Not sure what DEI has to do with it? Thinking about a NZ context, the NZ Court of Appeal receives many similar appeals against conviction arguing things like summing up issues, accused thinking that he should have given evidence after all, etc, etc. The vast majority of these fail. The armourer will probably have her appeal thrown out.
  The only difference is in NZ the armourer would have been remanded on bail pending sentencing.

    He has yet to demonstrate that he actually stands for something. I still see Labour but much better managed. For example, we still have a Maori Health Authority, it’s just relocated. Where’s the PI HA? Where’s one for 80 year olds? Where’s the plan to deduce staff? Cutting Defence by 6.5% is not a plan. But, yes, he’s immeasurably better than Ardern or Hipkins. Saw this gem from the NZ Herald, now it can be confusing as a lot of sayings include brass but not sure tax is one of them, I think he meant tacks. Maybe journalists should be looking inward at their language skills and less on criticising the govt.

I have just heard Sean Plunket read out Winston’s statement on the media furore about his ‘Nazi’ statement. Everything Winston writes is correct and Chris Luxon should be standing behind him 100%. The msm are colluding with opposition parties in attempting to fuel division within the Coalition ranks. Luxon, Peters and Seymour must stand firmly together, collectively giving the msm the middle finger.

Chris Luxon has decided to distance himself somewhat from Winston’s comments and I think Winston will understand why. That is the beauty of coalitions, the minor leaders can speak their minds more than the major leader.

  Luxon should be doing what he is doing, being Mr Nice and Sensible and appealing to the left and centre moderates. To do anything else is to give Labour and Greens oxygen and cede the hard fought middle ground. Luxon has enough problems trying to turn the country around and with no money to do it.

      I just don’t get it. Mr Luxon must be surrounded by smart people. They must know that Winston will do what he wants to do. They also must know that the New Zealand media wants to bring down the Government. Surely they have a plan to deal with this situation?
      
      The last 30 years have shown that Winston cannot be reigned in. But more importantly it is not in the Government’s interests for him be reigned in. Chris Luxon, Nicola Willis et al can get on with Government business. Meanwhile Winston can beat up the media, daily.
      
      Of course I am not a political strategist 😐. Maybe I just don’t understand the cunning plan.

      Steve, this country is kept on its financial balance -just- by farmers ‘sitting on the fence’ studying their, herd, flock or crop and making a decision as to when to move, sell or rotate said incumbent occupiers of the field.
      Jumping of the fence at the first opportunistic ‘buzz word’ (from the media?) has never been the road to financial success; nor has it ever produced a credible sustainable economy to keep the economic ‘trough full for the bludgers’.

    But there is no real strategy. The media strategy is that if Luxon, Seymore and/or Peters open their mouths that they find something to fuel their outrage in order to fuel the outrage of the so-called left and so-called progressive movement.
    
    All based on the journalistic ethic of presenting balance.
    
    And then they wonder why their business model is not making money for them and then they go begging for tax payer funding.

      I think the triplets DO have a strategy. They have agreed to allow each other to try and reach their goals without telling the media trolls anything much. Seymour is beavering quietly away, and Winston is making statements to give the media something to grizzle about, while satisfying his own need for public attention. And Luxon keeps a relatively low profile trying to keep everyone else up to their jobs.

    I am not qualified to comment on validity of that conclusion. However it would seem problematic if the solution being advanced is “decolonisation”. What does that even look like?
    
    At some point, a society needs to move on, and most have done so.
    
    Taiwan was occupied by Japan as a colony for 50 years. Any Taiwanese who blamed their ills on Japan’s occupation would be considered crazy.
    
    Mexico was invaded by the USA and more than half their territory annexed. What is now Texas, New Mexico, and most of California was all part of Mexico. The USA took it all, displacing most of the people. I don’t see Mexicans today chanting “From Oregon to Texas, 🇲🇽 Mexico will be free.”

        That’s true, that is what they think. But they are wrong, because Jews aren’t White, they are Jewish.         I ask because their situation is very similar:
        One country/empire is partitioned with the religions getting their own countries and people inside the original country/empire getting relocated in both directions. It was a terrible thing but was seen as the lessor of two evils.
        
        Something like 700,000 Jews from the greater Ottoman Empire were forced to leave their newly minted Islamic countries and move to Israel, with similar movement out. Much the same thing as what happened with India.
        
        In both cases, it’s less colonisation and more mass relocation in two directions. The key is that Palestinians weren’t the only ones who lost their land.

      Probably because the Mexican-American War was fought over territory tenuously occupied and held by Mexico which itself had only recently shaken off Spanish rule. Americans had long explored and settled in those lands. Just look at the history of Texas.
      
      Many parts of the world have been claimed but never truly settled or organised, effectively waiting for a more determined power to come in and make a new claim. Heck, Australia was known as New Holland for a reason, most of its vast territory claimed by the Dutch until Cook explored the east coast, claimed it for Britain and named it New South Wales. The colonisation of the rest of Australia by Britain effectively rendered the Dutch claim moot.
      
      Related, Texas and the states of northern Mexico have for years been in the process of forming a trading block, something akin to the way the provinces of China abutting Hong Kong became commercially bound to it and prospered.
      
      On balance, the Mexicans didn’t lose much at all.

  The implication of course being that people on the right are bad and evil also.
  
  I wonder what’s triggered this blatant dishonesty from leaders on the left? Is their bag of arguments so bare, so empty, that they feel they must resort to openly lying about the intentions of their political opponents?
  
  It really is an unwelcome, nasty and very dispiriting development in our national politics. I really wish they would stop doing it. It is a disgraceful and extremely unhealthy tactic for politicians to constantly bombard particularly young, impressionable New Zealanders that their opponents are evil and want to kill people and destroy the country.
  
  The division this is causing will come back and bite us – mark my words. It is causing us to hate each other, rather than merely have disagreements which we work through.
  
  And where is our news media on this? I am yet to see any of them calling this out and forcefully condemning it.

    I believe the difference comes from a conflicting perception of the world and how everything works. Essentially, many people on the left have a twisted perception of reality, and due to this, they have an inability to predict the outcome of various actions.
    
    Here’s an analogy. A leftist might look at a chained up dog, and think that is very mean to the dog. It is “evil” to lock the dog up like that. They aren’t able to predict the outcome if the dog is able to roam freely. That the dog may roam into the road and be killed, or the dog may maim a child and be put down. That the dog being chained up is actually the best solution for the dog itself and the community. When you are unable to predict the outcome of an action that on its surface appears negative, you can only have one perception. Evil.
    
    Essentially, leftists fail to think critically or abstractly. If you ask a leftist the question “How would you feel if you DIDNT’ have breakfast or lunch today” they’d most likely reply with “but I did have lunch today”…

The people asking why citizens of their countries are dying at elevated rates are demonized and dismissed as conspiracy theorists. Yet the data (checkout EuroStat Data below) is very clear-cut. Countries with high jab rates have the highest levels of excess deaths. And NZ is no different, more people are dying now than at the peak of COVID-19.

The jab was meant to save lives. Clearly, the opposite is true.

    Thanks for the additional data link, which confirms NZ deaths in 2023 were +15% higher than the 5 yr average from 2016-20 (pre-Covid period).
    
    2023 = 37,884 deaths
    Av 2016-20 = 32,923
    
    I think our total confirmed deaths (2020-Dec 2023) WITH COVID is about 5,900. But that still includes the guy that was shot in his driveway!

      It also includes my ex-wife’s sister who died with covid in a rest home aged 52.
      The fact that she had battled severe throat and tongue cancer for 13 years meant nothing, it was a covid death. No funeral. Relatives not even allowed on the crematorium property. Ashes can not be uplifted for 2 years I think.

    The ‘All Cause Mortality England’ Graph would seem to suggest that a higher than would be expected unvaccinated level exists among the older English population.

  Excess deaths is a very bullshit statistic to use for anything.
  
  All it means is the current rate of deaths relative to the average for the last few years.
  
  It will go up and down with various changes. If there is a “low crop” year due to lock downs etc then the next year there are more vulnerable people ready for harvest and there’s a “high crop year”.
  
  But, generally it has been going up as deaths have increased a bit recently due to changing demographics – particularly the increase in old people and boomers hitting the end of their lives.
  
  During the 1950s the boomers were born. There was a wave of them through primary school.
  In the 1960s a wave of them through secondary school.
  In the 1970s a wave of more wedding dresses and young families.
  And now that demographic wave is hitting its end and the boomers are starting to fall from the perch.
  
  Excess deaths could be a useful measure if deaths were otherwise stable, but they are not.

No wonder we hold the media in such contempt.
Tova races off to Chumbawamba so we can once again read the usual cliched story about political use of pop songs. Did she tell this one-hit wonder who probably had never heard of Winston Peters that he was a NZ Trump? Quite possibly.
Then the media regaled us with sob stories about disabled kids not being able to get high tech gear and other dreadful cruelties perpetrated by this callous government. The communications might have been a bit lacking (perhaps this new ministry doesn’t yet have the army of coms people everyone else has) but in fact the announcement was no more than a return to the pre-Covid situation when there were controls on what money could be spent on. Once controls are removed of course the costs rocket, as has happened with the disabled community. I doubt anyone was seriously rorting the system but clearly things had got a bit loose, at our cost.
Can we hope that one day our media will seek the facts and the reasons behind the facts and then report them to us in an informative and comprehensive way without the sensationalism, manufactured drama and blatant bias?

  In very round figures – assuming an average cost of (say) 500k (not being flash or in Auckland) – that’s 2 houses/million or 2000 houses/billion. So 2 billion would have built about 4000 houses. Over a year or three. They would eventually have housed something like 15000 people.

I see AirNZ is struggling to acquire sufficient sustainable jet fuel.

They need a rebranding exercise.

No matter its source, all jet fuel, when burned, turns into CO2 + water.
These sustain life. Without water and CO2 there would be no life on earth.
Therefore all jet fuel is sustainable.

Delighted to see that The Warehouse has finally figured out that having a woke marketing dept does not work.

The “maori wonderfulness” re their Market Kitchen brand was always going to fail because we are fed up with the maori crap being foisted upon us.

No doubt some pimply-faced, university influenced wokester though it would be “nice” to have maori language plastered over everyday staple items.

Some of them looked interesting but many/most potential buyers are going to say – get stuffed with the maori nonsense.

What the hell does grocery buying have to do with maori wonderfulness? Absolutely nothing.

The pimply-face one will not face any consequences however and will be free to try their next social experiment.

      Warehouse have posted a loss and are closing down or selling their online platform called market place. The market place as the articles on this say haven’t grown. That will be because it cannot compete with the prices the Chinese businesses are selling at with temu, aliexpress etc
      
      Some twit has decided that this is about having a few products in their market kitchen brand that in tinny print have Māori names. Those products sell. The issue with warehouse is market place.

Muslim activists are working at converting British white prison inmates to Islam.

I hear Muslim groups visit NZ prisons, too, though they have bugger all Muslim prisoners.

The Telegraph reports that Ian Acheson, who conducted a review of Islamist extremism in prisons for the British Ministry of Justice, said: “There’s strong evidence that people convert as a pragmatic response to who controls power and space in our prisons.”

Authentic conversions shouldn’t be ruled out, he said, “but the fact remains that frontline prison staff lack the religious competence, leadership backup and authority to spot and challenge malign control and intimidation by such gangs, often because of fears of being accused of racism”.

The newspaper says “a third review” last year by Colin Bloom, a government adviser, found that failure to identify as a Muslim meant that at best the new prisoner would be denied ‘protection’ from the dominant Muslim gang on that wing, or at worst the new prisoner would be subjected to violence and intimidation from that gang.

  Yes, I see he is calling for wealth and asset taxes. Presumably capital gains tax as well. Boy, didn’t he do a great job pushing those as minister of finance.

Hmmm, so the reporters had it wrong, this had nothing to do with the current government, but that they weren’t given enough funding last budget….

Finance Minister Nicola Willis called officials and Disabilities Minister Penny Simmonds in for an urgent briefing, after families were blindsided by news of cuts to respite care.

She said there was a briefing earlier this year, warning Whaikaha was stressed – but she said that scale of the situation was not clear.

“What I’ve been working to understand is how is it that the appropriation they received at the last budget hasn’t been sufficient to get them through the financial year? Because obviously that’s the key challenge,” she said.

Standing outside talking to the neighbour, nz post van drives by.. two minutes later get an email pop up on my watch. “ Delivery was attempted but was not able to be completed”

The NZ Herald, Northern Advocate has an article on the government looking into reopening the Marsden Point oil refinery. The “government” not private industry! I read that to mean taxpayers.

The article says it will cost billions to do so and require a specialist workforce.

Looks like us hardworking taxpayers are going to have to work a bit harder and longer to pay for what the previous government could have prevented from happening for heaps less.

What a stupid idea for a government to allow a private company to shut down the only oil refinery in the country and start relying on overseas suppliers to provide a critical energy source.

The cynical part of me thinks some mates of government are going to make a lot of money at our expense,

Well, you were finance minister for six years, if you believed this why in those 6 years did you do nothing about it….. 3 years where you needed no other parties support to do anything

New Zealand’s tax system is “unfair and unbalanced”, Grant Robertson said during his valedictory statement.

Almost alone in the OECD, this country did not properly tax assets and wealth in some form. The system entrenched inequality, he said
