How stupid is Tory Whanau ?
She removes car parking in Cuba Street because she wants to “reduce emissions” and that is more important than losing about $200k per year in parking fees.
Well , Tory , consider this: the drivers ( and shoppers / spenders ) in those cars will simply keep driving them but they will drive to Lower Hutt or Kilbirnie or Kapiti, and spend their money out of Wellington.
And emissions will remain the same.
What an idiot.

  I would encourage Tory and her Council to keep on enacting the stupid rules. Let Wellington collapse. Then it is a great object lesson in the dangers of voters electing incompetent councils.         You obviously don’t mean people who rent their house. who obviously pay a share of rates as part of their rent. You’d have to be a bit of an idiot if you’re a landlord and don’t allow for rates in the amount of rent you charge. (The proportion not taken care of by a tax deduction)

        (1) Tory Whanau is certainly not dreaming about the end of universal suffrage.
        (2) the lines you quote are from John Lennon’s 1971 song, ‘Imagine’.
        (3) given that Whanau was born in 1983, those lines can hardly be her generation’s ‘anthem’, can they? If they are any generation’s anthem, they would far more likely be your generation’s.
        
        So, whatever the ever-so-clever point you were trying to make was, it was well and truly lost on me.

    100%. As a Wellingtonian I really hope the government stays out of this and lets nature take its course. Sometimes people have to reach rock bottom before they admit they have a problem. Even if Wellington voters are incapable of learning, they can serve as an example to others.

  Ive lived in Wellington all my life but seldom find myself in Newtown. The roads are baffling now the cycle lanes have taken over. Apparently I was in a Special Vehicle Lane for more than 70m, and I now need to pay $150 for the privilege.

  So he couldn’t run for President (he is using a large amount of his own money)’
  $175mUSD… he practically bit their hand off for that number, he accepted so fast.
  IMO they could have said $250mUSD and he still would have accepted.
  This only the bon, pending appeal, I’m betting the appeal will fall in his favour and will not be asked for more than the bond.

He willingly signs up to all the associated rules and regulations. For a start, how f’ing stupid is that?? (Amazing how someone so thick gets paid so many millions)
      
      Then when they have to abide by said rules and regulations, he starts whining and moaning like an entitled little school boy.
      
      Coutts doesn’t really give a f**k about this other than he doesn’t want to look bad personally. He’s a pratt.

    Judging by reports of the harbour master’s behaviour in relation to practice sessions on the water for the teams I’d suggest that he’s a hardened lefty/greenie. He allowed virtually no time for practice before the actual race days. Even on race days he put severe limits on the time allowed for practice.

  They dont need more transparency. They need to stop. If IWI were legally blocked from accepting payment or gift (Koha) from people requesting permission for events and roads etc there would be no incentive for the IWI to decline.
  
  I would bet serious money that if such a ban was put into place within two years iwi would simply be blanket rubber stamping every request. They would not want to put the time and effort to investigate and block without the financial reward for doing so.
  
  I’m pretty sure a good number (all?) of the paid whale watchers at the event were Iwi. I would have thought the environmentalists would have looked out for the whales for free, becuase they care so much, right?

    A couple of years ago one iwi demanded payment from me for the “iwi consultation” that’s required when you apply for a permit to carry out research on DOC land. I said no, and protested to DOC, who washed their hands of it, and said it was up to me to convince the iwi. I went in and did the research anyway – it was low impact and at a remote site, so nobody was ever going to know.
    
    To be fair, that iwi was an outlier, most have been reasonable about the consultations, though there’s often a loooong wait for a decision. But I’ve heard of other cases of iwi demanding payment for the consultation.

  I’m not sure that they do. Is this not an agreement between a private company and the various authorities and “stake holders”?
  While I share your apparent distaste for the extortionate practices of eCan, DOC and the local hapu I don’t believe that the agreement must be made public. I do suspect that in time Sir Russell may well choose to release that information as part of his tactics to retain Lyttelton as a race course for Sail GP.

No.Wrong. Reasonable doubt does not relate to police laying charges . It relates to the burden of proof , ‘the legal burden of proof required to affirm a conviction in a criminal case.’

And their front page , graced with a mobsters’ tattooed visage ,relating to the murderous affray in TayRaffertery, is simply a montage of facebook posts relating to the now named individuals who were killed.

No wonder te legacy media are neither trusted not thriving.

  This is the right and proper test that any prosecuting agency should be applying. You do not take a prosecution to court if it is doomed to failure for two reasons:
  1. A prosecution is a burden on the accused (and witnesses, jurors, etc) even if found not guilty.
  2. This wastes precious court time.
  There is some pragmatism here which is recognised in Crown Law guidelines. A prosecution may be taken even though it is touch and go that it would succeed if it would be in the ‘public interest’ for it to proceed. This would be the situation where there is pressure (often from a vocal few) for ‘justice’ to be done (ie a scalp to be delivered).

  The appeals court reduced it to 175m which coincidentally is the maximum amount Trumps lawyers argued the fine should be in the first place.
  
  Seems like the appeals court agrees. Huge slap in the face for the Judge.
  
  Also heard CNN earlier this week discussing how Trump could probably easily sell Maralago for between 200 and 250m. Interesting CNN never mentioned that when the Judge and DA argued it was worth $18m and that Trump had overstated its value.

  Interesting article. Heard some time ago its wheels within wheels from an ex student at the Architecture Department Auckland Uni. All projects had to have a Māori connection and the Professors husband is Toa Architects. As with many other courses Māori students get easier admission and financial support. She was pissed off but that’s NZ Universities get use to it. Its inbedded. Tell your pākeha sons and daughters to take a trade or go to an OZ uni. Change of government will not change anything.

      There is a certain element in NZ who say yachting is a rich man’s sport. My Dad was one of them and would not listen to any argument.
      They fail to see the trickle down. The employment, the merchandising, the world publicity, the GST created, the photography essentials, the list is endless.
      I worked 50 years at a company that made trailers. Yep, the trickle down. People want to get out there to watch the racing. That means boat sales increase as do the trailers. I have seen this especially in 1995 with the Americas Cup.
      But yes, the rich man’s sport is too much fun so the fun police must stop it.
      SailGP will never go back to Christchurch and you know who to blame. Any major water racing should by done in the City of Sails.

Nothing sums up gisborne quite like a gang prospect stabbed to death at his 21st.

I wonder how many future victims have been saved by this?

I also find it peculiar that he was named after a second rate 1970’s outboard motor manufacturer but each to their own I guess.

In other gisborne news, I see that residents have painted over a rainbow pedestrian crossing so I guess it’s not all bad up there!

    I checked on Copilot to see if road vehicles are obliged to stop at rainbow crossings and this is what it said:
    “In New Zealand, rainbow crossings are not officially recognized as standard road markings. Therefore, road vehicles are not specifically obliged to stop at them.”
    
    I also asked whether road vehicles were obliged to stop at zebra crossings, and Copilot said:
    “All motorists are required to stop at zebra crossings when a pedestrian is on or waiting to cross.”
    
    I recognise that Copilot is not a legal authority on this matter, but NZTA needs to clarify what the law is. Who will be to blame if someone is killed on a rainbow crossing?

      I have a vague recollection that when the first rainbow crossing was installed in Wellington at huge expense there was a report that it was not a legal pedestrian crossing because by law pedestrian crossings can only have white stripes. I wonder if one of the very many pieces of legislation pushed through by the last government was a change to the Land Transport Act to allow rainbow colours?

    She has exactly the same job for the same hotel chain for a lot more money, but they have to share accommodation with another couple they didn’t previously know to make the move worthwhile financially
    A bit of a come down at fifty.
    Apart from that there’s a much bigger Thai community with markets and food courts, which they love.

      Daughter and Partner, both chefs, are paying similar rents in Melbourne as to what they’d be paying if they lived in Auckland or Queenstown … but are earning far more than they would anywhere in NZ and can easily change employers, if they want. Transport/ food/clothing etc is much cheaper than in NZ.
      
      Nieces & nephew went to Townsville with just basic school qualifications. Two picked up managerial jobs in customer service/retail, and one owns a business (house removals). They (and their kids) will never return to NZ.

  We had a plumber visit yesterday. He’s South African, two sons, one 20 and a panel beater, the other 19 and training as an electrician. Both off to Australia as soon as they are qualified, along sadly with my granddaughter and her partner. A daughter already there.     No matter how good National / Act or NZF are this isn’t a five minute fix. It will take NZ years to get back on the track it was on under Key. Remember when he came to power he promised to stop the brain drain. No one thought he could. After a few years we had kiwis coming back to NZ.
    
    The current government has a pile of debt and crazy policy to repeal and fix. Even things like removing the crazy speed limit reductions will take a year or so.
    
    We are a big ship that will take some time to turn.

    Far too many immigrants use NZ as a stepping stone to get into Aussie. For far too many South Africans that is their intent.
    
    I am settled in NZ. Three sons schooled here, OE’d, lived and worked overseas returned to NZ and now two are living in Sydney. Both are happily renting out their NZ houses.
    
    If the third one joins them in Aussie I will probably sell up and, with some regret, join them in Aussie. I am not a big fan of the weather there.

      Well South Africans, yes, but also Indians, Chinese, Brits etc. For some it is easier to come to NZ, then get into Australia.
      
      For some it is a deliberate strategy up front.
      For others they decide to first give NZ a go, then go to Australia as Plan B when NZ doesn’t work out for them.
      
      When I came to NZ in 1992, it was about equally easy to get into NZ or Australia. Looking back, I should have chosen Australia.

    Well that pretty much holds for everyone. Pretty much everyone I know has kids who have moved out of NZ.
    
    The only real difference with immigrants is that they are generally more highly motivated people. They are the ones that don’t just talk, but actually got off their arses and have gone through the efforts/hassles of moving.
    
    When you lose the offspring of immigrants then you’re losing that stock.

  It is quite likely that for some households that can’t afford a rental, there are other reasons. Because there are some quite decent housing subsidies readily available – bond advance, Accommodation supplement, Tenancy Costs Cover and Temporary Additional Support.
  
  Other reasons – ECON101 and landlord serious risk assessments. The assessments have to be serious due to the many rules introduced by the Labour government that make it devilishly difficult and expensive to terminate bad tenants.

I’d rather refer to myself as a British settler (which my ancestors were), I’m no bird nor am I a fruit. I agree that for the purposes of rights ethnicity is not a factor, but neither is nationality. All New Zealand citizens, including those of other nationalities who have gone through the citizenship process, have equal rights.       As I understand it from my old Maori aunt (who died in 1972) the Moriori were the descendants of Kupe, who arrived sometime in the 10th century, established settlement & returned to Hawaiki. The Hokianga harbour is named after the place from which he returned.

  What has happened is that the meaning of the word ‘indigenous’ has been changed, for purely political reasons, so that Maori qualify.

  * He advises the clients on how to structure questions.
  * The client makes the final decision on the structure of the questions, often making different choices.
  
  Thus it is highly likely that not all DPF’s work follows his best advice.

  * They might start acting in ways that bring about some regional stability (eg. addressing terrorism).
  * They have some shared infrastructure needs (eg. roads).

    Interesting. I’ve got avpackage coming from China, arrived directly in Christchurch today, expected delivery tomorrow, nz post. Last week had one arrived in Auckland, Aramex, took 3 days. The ones I hate are USPS. Takes a long time to leave the US and more times fucked up than not. Once it went to the UK, Back to USA then to NZ. Another time it spent a week in Japan. I can’t complain though, I’ve never had to pay gst on the USA ones.

I’m particularly disgusting with the real estate industry, as it should be easy enough to set up their own version of ‘OneRoof’ which would negate the need to fill NZME’s coffers.

Libertarians are right

Yesterday I had an argument with a couple of Pro CGT people who don’t understand why CGT creates an unreasonable situation. I’ll try to rephrase the situation and show why simply not having a CGT is the best option:

Business to business transactions are usually treated equally in this country. I sell a service to your company and I pay tax on my income and you claim the expense. Equal treatment. Sometimes, due to the matching principle, the payer has to expense the cost over a longer period of time (i.e. asset depreciation), this is because the expense relates to multiple periods whereas the income only relates to one period and therefore is taxable in the year it got earned.

Goodwill is at the moment not taxable nor deductible in this country (we can’t claim amortisation in our tax returns). Bringing in a Capital Gains tax would make the income side taxable while the expense side wouldn’t be which is unequal and against the normal treatment of transactions in our country (Labour’s non-deductibility of interest for property investors is another example of unequal treatment).
Allowing the deduction of amortisation of Goodwill in the buyer’s accounts would allow for equalisation but the calculation of how the Goodwill would be amortised would be difficult and very dependent on a huge number of factors.
There is also the issue that the Capital Gain is effectively a prepayment of future income and therefore should be attributed to those future periods which again has way too many variables and would need to be consistent with the Amortisation of the Goodwill which would result in a huge amount of compliance costs. (note that Goodwill generally only has a limited life span at which point the Goodwill you purchased has been replaced by Goodwill and relationships you yourself have created – this is why Goodwill is amortised)

Or; you could treat it like we do with GST on land and simply take the tax off the transaction completely which ensures equal treatment without all the unnecessary fluffing around.

  Depreciation has nothing to do with it – a book entry which is taken care of at the time by claiming an income tax credit. If you later sell the asset for more than its depreciated book value, there is a clawback. That is not a CGT …
  
  If you sell the asset with some retained earnings in the books they are added to the input cost or subtracted from the output – it makes no difference. Or youcan just sort it out by paying a dividend.
  
  We are very much an outlier in the CGT world. Just saying. I have not read of any other countries with CGT in place having significant agitation to do away with it. Again – just saying.
  
  The “tax on inflation” thing is dealt with in most countries that I know of by having a specified lower than normal rate (Canada) or discounting the CGT tax rate to about half of what it would normally be (Australia). Tends to end up at about 15% or so.

    I’m talking about capital gains on the sale of a business to another person.
    
    My Depreciation example was to show how assets with a limited life time covering more than one period are expensed which is relevant for Goodwill. We don’t allow amortisation of Goodwill in this country which is the other side of CGT on the sale of Goodwill (which is also non-taxable so creates a net tax position of $nil as inter-business transactions should).
    
    Again, it doesn’t matter that we are an outlayer – just because another country does something doesn’t make it correct.
    
    However, note that while Australia, France and the UK no longer allow claiming amortisation, the US, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan and a bunch of others do so your “everyone else does it” falls over on my point of CGT on Goodwill.
    
    Simply removing CGT on Goodwill and not allowing amortisation is by far and away the tidiest and most effective way to handle taxing Goodwill.
    
    What’s hard about that? It is hard to be fair and the knowledge base of random people on the internet isn’t really enough to cover the intricacies of tax law and accounting practices, beyond “other countries do it” of course.

I won’t go into the reasons why at this stage, but has anyone else heard this?

  Chuck. I am not a Muslim, but this 72 virgins thing is a myth. The truth is far more chilling than that.
  
  The actual text says something like:
  * 2 doe-eyed maidens (ie. virgins) eager to do your bidding.
  * 70 women taken from the men you have conquered to be raped at your pleasure.
  
  Remember that a woman is a chattel. Raping a woman is not considered a sexual act on the woman, rather it is a way of humiliating the man who is supposed to be her owner/protector (ie. father, husband, brother).

He claims there are mainly two types of migrants. Those we are looking for opportunity. He argues that there are very few who claim to be refugees looking for political asylum. And there are large numbers of mainly young Chinese men and some Chinese women housed in separate camps in the Darien province of Panama.

Busses laid on for the migrants by these agencies are waved through border controls as long as the basses pas through the countries south of the American border.

Glad we have a large moat.
