Another of Labour’s chosen ones that they want out on the street. Fortunately 3 strikes just keeps him prison as it in place at the time of the offending.

Interesting decision, I would have expected the judge to have gone with letting him out because it was in line with 3 strikes being dropped. Definitely would have if it wasn’t being reinstated.

I’ll need help with this one – is breaking into someone’s house while being chased by police, pointing a gun at them then jumping into their bed and telling them to say they are their boyfriend tikanga or Mana motohake?

I started watching 1 News last night about the budget. According to them the budget’s no good. It’s not the right time for tax cuts you see?

The reporter Maiki Sherman said it’s not the right time for tax cuts, Chloe from the Greens said it’s not the right time for tax cuts. Even an ordinary worker said the tax cuts were no good anyway because they would only enable him to buy an extra 3 Chupa chups a week.

After that I turned the TV off. Who can bear such one sided reporting? No one in NZ apparently wants tax cuts even though that was a central plank of National’s election campaign?? Apparently all we want to do is pay as much tax as we can to the government so they can spend it on our behalf?

  I couldn’t agree more Scott. They devoted about the first nine minutes to this one sided rant. Was there a single pro government person interviewed? Then followed all that up with their Jobs For The Boys item. We also turned it off (yes I know…why were we even watching in the first place!)
  I was tempted to write and complain but have done so previously only to receive a white wash reply.

    Of course it is biased crap, but unless everyone complains each and every time there is such crap delivered, then the crap will continue. My suggestion is to complain to TVNZ and copy the email to the Minister. Even if TVNZ turn down the complaint, take it to the BSA. The BSA will soon get sick of crap being delivered and pressure from the Minister, the BSA etc will eventually make a difference.

  Okay, so I don’t know the exact vericity of the source, but I’d be interested in peoples thoughts on this one here:

  (Please ignore the clickbaity title, its a bit dumb).
  
  It’s basically a discussion of the tax cut plan, but from the point of view of like…. allegedly, John Key, Matthew Hooton (hardly a left winger), and (potentially) Simon Bridges having concerns about them.
  
  Basically, the argument seems to boil down to three things:
  A) If you want to be the government of fiscal responsibility and paying down debt, you like… need money to do that. Now is a reasonable time to pay down debts, and could easily be spun as “We aren’t doing the tax cuts just yet, because fiscal responsibility is more important”. Taking on debt to service the tax cuts would be seen as odd.
  B) Tax cuts at this time are likely to be Inflationary, rather than growth encouraging (I don’t know enough about economics to figure one way or another on this one, but it sounds reasonable)
  C) “Move fast and break things” isn’t actually what people want from their governments. They want predictability, and spending an extra year or two to bring people along for the ride/get voters used to the idea would be a good *political* move. (This was John/Key’s approach, back in the day).

    They can get fucked. This IS NOT a tax cut just a very small adjustment to brackets. From memory it takes the bracket about a third of the way to where they would be if they had moved with inflation or wages or whatever they anhould be indexed to over the past 15 years.

      A young public servant was interviewed on the telly news last night. Clearly prearranged, not a random person on Lambton Quay. Tax cuts a terrible idea.
      
      He was not asked if his own job could be for the chop. That could be one of many possible reasons to influence his opinion about tax cuts. We will never know as he was not asked.

    How can tax cuts be inflationary?
    No new money supply is being created and added to the system.
    Either the Govt gets the tax and spends it, or the worker gets reduced tax and more in hand to spend.
    Same number of $$, just used by different people.

      Tax cuts can be inflationary in much the same way as money printing is inflationary: it puts more money in the hands of the public to spend on the same amount of goods.
      
      If the government spends the money instead of giving tax cuts then you are right – same amount of money vs same amount of goods and services therefore no change to inflation.
      
      However, if they used the money to pay down debt then that would reduce inflation.
      
      There are some second-order effects too:
      
      If the government tightens its belt, then people are less likely to live high on the hog. People become more prudent. This chills the economy and reduces inflation.
      
      If the government spends up, then people feel flush and rush out and spend money – inflationary.

  I would agree, it’s not the right time for tax cuts, delay them a few years and use that money to fix the mess the country is in. For a year or two ramp up the health budget, clear the backlog. Stop the drain of our health professionals overseas. Etc.

  National campaigned on the tax cuts. Fair enough.
  
  They campaigned that the foreign buyer tax and internet gambling tax would fund it. I admit to a degree of scepticism at the time, but these were campaigned on as “rock solid” numbers …
  
  Then Winston killed the foreign buyer thing so that tax went away. Currently, Treasury’s best guess about the internet gambling tax might raise as much as a quarter of the projected figure.
  
  So now the cuts are to be funded out of general tax revenue …. at a time when general tax revenue is projected to be taking a hit.
  
  National did not campaign on funding the tax cuts out of general tax revenue. Noone would have believed them. Now – noone would get too grumpy (except with Winston) if it was explained that Winston killing the foreign buyer thing has also wounded the tax cuts for now.. No ranting or raving, just a calm acknowledgement that signing the coalition agreement has changed things. It happens with coalitions.
  
  Leaving aside of course that at a time when the RB is trying to take money out of people’s pockets to nail inflation, it seems a bit odd that the gummint should be working against the RB by putting some money back in said pockets.
  
  I’m nearer 80 than 70 and none of this stuff really affects me so I’m just saying how I see things going.

Interview Barbara Edmonds and Mike Hosking early this morning, before 6am. Ms Edmonds reiterated Labour would not cut taxes, but would invest in the productive economy. In response to what exactly, Ms Edmonds said investing in the productive economy means Labour would not stop school builds but would stop deep public service job cuts.

Ms Edmonds is Labour’s finance spox. Not sure she has her arms around the role.

  3Waters could have allowed them to create better outcomes for all NZers. But they tagged on their ideology and sabotaged the entire initiative. Rightly so, the implementation of their one size fits all approach would have added significant costs with a project that was funded by a broad base of ratepayers who would have had little control/say where the money was spent.
  
  Alternative: They could have placed the management and operation of all water and wastewater treatment plants under the control of a single or regional “authorities” and funded this activity through tax.
  
  Funding it this way would taken the some of the burden off ratepayers. This approach would have relieved poverty and created consistency across NZ in terms of level and quality of services and protection of the environment. Councils would have continued to provide the localised reticulation and management of water services.
  
  But then Labour had to add ideology.

    It is a shame that ‘up tickers and down tickets’ do not share their views on how we can improve water and wastewater services supplied to our communities.
    
    A more rational approach to supplying these services to communities is needed to better protect the environment, public health and building a more resilient society and lift people out of poverty.
    
    Piling more cost onto ratepayers is not helping everyone, not over taxed ratepayers and very definitely not the poor. Providing better quality services may well take pressure off other public service providers.

      Piling more costs onto over taxed tax payers for those that councils have looked after there infrustructure or those that provide there own is also not helping, better to ensure that the management of these services by councils are placed higher on priorities than vanity projects and feel good idea’s to ensure adaqute funding is allocated first.

    Why should councils have their assets taken off them because some councils haven’t been doing their jobs? Some councils are doing their job. They’ve ring fenced the water rates to be used only for water, storm, sewage infrastructure
    
    Help the small councils who can’t afford it, put commissioners in with the councils who are not doing their job. Let those who are keep doing what they are doing.

        Look at Porirua’s 17.5% rates increase, then drive from Paremata to Aotea Lagoon where there are slips neglected for two years or so.
        No matter, hundreds of thousands are being wasted on what will be an underutilised cycle lane.
        As those affected are mainly ratepayers, nothing matters, but were it in Porirua’s state housing area, the problem would be rectified.
        Maybe there are more votes there, as they sure pay no rates.

      I for one would prefer to receive more affordable services, better quality services and better environmental outcomes.
      
      3Water labour style would not have done that.
      My proposed model has been demonstrated to be effective and you can’t even fuck it up even if you bring in “cultural controls”.
      
      Under my model the quality and level of services that you receive will be the same north/south/east/west and it allows government to inject tax payer money into it equitably, without favour!!
      
      Ratepayers will receive value.
      
      And government can still support councils that need help with distribution of services on a case by case approach.

    Me: when I buy shares in a listed company, where do you think the money goes?
    Socialist: blinks a few times, then… The business?
    Me: no. When I buy shares in a listed company the money goes to the person who sold the shares. A private citizen, just like me. Not one cent goes to the business. So the money has gone from one private citizen to another. How is that investing in the company, from the company’s perspective.

Segregation at the University of Auckland has come in for some criticism. I think the KKK reference is a bit OTT – the segregation is bad enough without resorting to hyperbole. However, that’ll become to topic, not the awful decision by the University to set aside areas for Polynesians only. It defies belief. A Māori law student defends it because he faces discrimination every day, he says. No details of course. Winnie is doing himself lots of favours by tackling these issues. National should not leave a vacuum, this is a matter of principle.

      I really struggled with NZ Marmite. It is basically black margarine.
      
      South African Marmite is sharp. About twice as sharp as Vegemite. You hardly use any of that stuff.

  I am very disappointed to see that Vita Brits have been quietly dropped from production. (Sanitarium bought Grain Products some years ago ) They just became unavailable at the super market. No explanation as to why that I can find.
  Vita Brits is the only Weetbix type cereal that doesn’t go soggy when milk is added.

I do not condone vandalism of any kind.

However IMO pedestrian crossings should be, well, pedestrian crossings. I would prefer transport authorities to focus on delivering transport services rather than celebrating rainbow 🌈 or any other communities.

However I am obviously part of a minority. If the majority of folk want rainbow crossings, I guess we will have rainbow 🌈 crossings. 😐

  I agree. These faux crossing annoys me. And not just the rainbow ones. The ones with bricks and the ones on top of speed bumps and even the ones with white stripes in places where a crossing should not be.
  
  The road code defines a crossing and sets out how everyone should behave around one. There are diamonds on the road for the safe stopping zone. There are rules about how close to one you can park. There are rules about how long you must wait and how that changes if the road is divided with a traffic island in the middle.
  
  These unofficial crossings have no rules because they are not pedestrian crossings. They are just weird pieces of road with bricks and strange paint job.

    I dislike the raised crossings that aren’t actually pedestrian crossings. They’re just a raised path, have no markings, no diamonds. But some pedestrians and drivers treat them as pedestrian crossings and you get who-stares if you don’t stop. Getting a bit tired of community sanctimoniousness .. is that a word?

Just received the EV RUC notice. It states that “RUC will apply to your vehicle from 1 April. You have until 31 May 2024 to buy your first RUC license. It’s an offense to drive a RUC vehicle without a current RUC license.”

I can’t figure out if I can drive our EV in April!
It’s Illegal to drive without but have until 31 May. Which is true? The NZTA website does not clarify the issue.

      A number of a multi million recent new Kura – no longer a Primary school, have had the street named changes to reflect it being a new Maori orientated Kura, with school underneath.
      Built for 700, we understand, but only some 300 there with the old school 300 metres away now empty. Wait and see what is done with it – Total Immersion I expect, but from where.
      There is a 7 year old Maori Secondary School within sight across the valley.
      New Kura ex decile one with mixture of Maori, Islander, Refugees, and Immigrants, but with unusual new three story buildings, and all Maori orientated.
      Cannot see any population growth there anyway as there are other Primary Schools in the area.
      Maori Wahine Head Teacher of course.
      Black and White tiled to reflect its concept but will fall off in an earthquake.
      Large Secondary school in the not too far away area cannot get finished as money now no longer available for them.
      Who makes these sorts of decisions in the Education Department ?

I see one of the rainbow crossings on Karangahape Road in Auckland has been painted over.

This is good, as far as I am concerned. It might encourage councils not to waste ratepayers’ money virtue signalling by creating crossings that are potentially dangerous because they do not conform with the traffic laws.

You could argue that the Labo govt were just DEI garage. Mostly a bunch of people in positions of power because of racial identity, without merit. Its even worse with the Gweens. The Gweens “human capital” are now criminal & Marxist.

Though the alternative is that maybe Labo last govt were the most competent people available to Labo. Labo just didn’t have any more competent people waiting in the wings. That was it.

To describe Labo & Gween MPs properly would never make it through moderation. So must always zone down reality here. But the lack of merit and ability in the parties to the left of National maybe reflects wider society. There is now a great wash of incompetent unproductive useless people in society who weren’t there in the numbers of say 15 years ago.

I remember when

Item on Newshub Tuesday about High Need Children facilities being over capacity.
These facilities, catering for classes of 8, are considered vital for those needing their services.
Stated that the need would grow by more than a thousand pupils over the next 10 years.
What wasn’t mentioned, was that many high need rural children either don’t, or have limited ability to access their services.
There are waiting-lists, limited numbers of facilities create access difficulties (distance) and many who should be are not referred.

Moving the problems to the future!

I woke up this morning to hear the Education Review Office is saying that children’s behaviour in classrooms has deteriorated ‘in the last two years’.
What a surprise! In the last two years! Really?
How about the last 35 years?
That was when I watched on the TV news one night (when TV news was still watchable) an education bureaucrat or NZEI type telling us they were giving away corporal punishment and were going to ‘model positive behaviour’. That would then pass on to the ‘students’.
They gave away their authority.
When adults give away their authority they create a vacuum.
Children hate vacuums; it makes them feel insecure.
Bullies love vacuums because they move to fill it because they’re trying to find out where authority is.
That’s how you get chaos in the classroom.
Teachers brought it on themselves.
Matters have been made worse because Authority such as the Teaching Council seems to line up with the children.
It seems extraordinary to ordinary people, for example, that a teacher can be disciplined for pulling the earpods out of a smartarse teenager’s ears during class.
It seems extraordinary that a teacher can expect to be spat on by a stroppy, hormonal 11 year-old girl, and she is not backed up by her principal or the board.
I asked my granddaughter recently how she liked her this year’s teacher.
‘She’s good,’ she said. ‘Really strict. I like that.’
My granddaughter is 7. Her teacher is Indian.
Anecdotally (from the grandchildren and their parents here and in Australia) the strict teachers that kids like seem to be Indian and South African women.

    But then Nick Mills (Wellington Newstalk ZB) read out a sobering e-mail or text from a teacher who daily confronts bad behaviour – and what she is not allowed to do in response exept, it seems, take it. Bitten, kicked, spat on, insulted.
    SthEffrikkin women … late last year my granddaughter and I went to a movie at Albany.
    As we sat waiting for the movie to start and enjoying our popcorn and icecream a large gaggle of perhaps 20 children and maybe five mothers came into the theatre.
    Two things became evident: the mothers were telling – ordering – the children to sit where directed, and with whom. The mothers were South African.
    The children were well-behaved throughout.
    I mentioned this to my daughter’s South African neighbour (he and his wife and family migrated from Durban last year) and his aunt.
    They laughed. ‘Welcome to our childhood,’ he said. South African women are known to be plain-speakingly assertive. And their kids know it.
    His wife is a teacher at a school on Auckland’s North Shore. She has been horrified at what she was expected to put up with in the classroom.
    ‘Asian’ children are the best behaved, she says.
    My grandchildren’s primary school in Brisbane is run by a South African woman.
    My daughter thinks she is a bit too authoritarian but there is no doubt the school is well run.
    Discipline problems are sorted out quickly and effectively.
    Incidentally, in conversations with Maori parents over there many said they sent their children to the school because it had a good reputation and they knew their kids were safe there.

When i was at primary school in the late 50s, every morning the teacher would place a leather strap on top of her desk where all the kids could see it and get the message that misbehaviour wouldnt be tolerated. She rarely had to resort to using that strap.

  Half way through term one a group of students approached me asking if they could be placed into a different mathematics class.
  When asked why they responded that the teacher can’t control us!!
  The majority of students want the classroom to be a structured learning environment.
  It is achieved by setting that expectation from day 1.

  When you see the young buck taking on the old buck, he’s not just trying to take over control of the herd. He’s testing the old buck to make sure the old buck is still a strong leader – that gives the whole herd a feeling of safety.
  
  Similarly the youth naturally push the boundaries of adults (parents, teachers etc). They don’t just do this to be naughty. They also do this to find the boundaries which help to make them feel safe. They don’t feel strong, they want somebody strong in charge and keeping them safe.
  
  Take away those boundaries and they will continue to push until something pushes back.
  
  Unfortunately for many, the first thing that ever gives them any resistance are:
  * Wrapping themselves around a power pole at 3 am.
  * The courts.
  * Gangs.
  
  It is no wonder that gangs are booming. They’re a place that gives structure and discipline which the kids need and crave.

  People looking back from today look at a bit of Auckland land and complain that it is now worth $50 million an acre or whatever and they sold it for a few pounds an acre.
  
  What they fail to realise is that the value is not so much in the land itself. The value comes from Auckland being built there.
  
  If Auckland had instead been built at Thames, then Thames would be worth $50M an acre and Auckland land would still be (relatively) cheap.
  
  Of course, if NZ had been built in PNG, then PNG would be the shining beacon and NZ would be what PNG is today.

The state dictating how parents choose to discipline their kids has had a flow on effect, and the removal of Parental Authority has contributed to a lack of understanding and acknowledgement of authority in general.

  Emergency power was restored as intended ( With in 45 seconds as per SOLAS requirements), Why they dropped anchor and went astern thereby losing control of vessel.
  
  Again, Very reluctant too comment further without getting more facts.
  
  Same as in Airplanes, Ships have procedures and Drills for this exact scenario ( Blackout). Just not convinced this was followed ?

        You are right Master Mariner we should wait for further info before jumping to conclusions. However what did puzzle me was that power was restored so why the accident ? I was under the wrong impression that power had not been restored before the collision. Your comment ref possible confusion on the bridge is very valid. As a Master Mariner who left the sea back in the dark ages of the Slow Greens witnessed on many occasions as to whom was in control when the Old Man came to the bridge especially when picking up pilots or in busy seaways. With a pilot onboard the Master is still in command but how much actual ship handling have todays Masters done. Its a guess but two pilots and the Master must have exchanged many quizzical looks at each other as the disaster developed as to who was in command. Its the Master.

        Without fully knowing but “I’m assuming” they never lost there Engine, Only Power too control the Engine.
        This was evident with Transverse Thrust ( Swinging to Starboard) and Going astern.
        
        The power when lights went out was reactivated when the Emergency generator came too life, This controls ( By Emergency Back up) things such as Controllable Pitch propellor and Steering pump.
        
        So “maybe” they did not lose there Engine ( still Running), Just the abiltity too control it via Emg Generator powering CPP and Steering motors.
        
        But in all honesty, My guess is just as good as any others, I will wait for the report which you will hear more from i’m sure.

When I arrived in NZ 31.5 years ago, NZers were proud to think of themselves as practical people who made and fixed stuff. It was a sign of frugality and resilience and was proudly worn as a Kiwi trait (ignoring the fact that pretty much every country thinks the same of themselves – eg Afrikaners have “‘n boer maak ‘n plan”).

I bet now a substantial % of the population couldn’t do an oil change or sort out spark plugs or fix a dripping tap. Probably many couldn’t even change a tyre.

Instead we’re becoming more and more dependent on others, especially government.

I bet more people fill out Form 8 at WINZ than could fix anything.

It’s not just fixing stuff either. How many can bake a decent basic scone? That’s a dying art. Sure, some people will bake etc if it becomes a facebook trend for a month or two, but that’s it.

One things for sure – the cities have lost contact with the countryside. When I moved to Auckland (St Helliers) in 1992, there were three families on the street that had pet lambs in spring. Do you see any of that any more?

As that contact is lost, people become less capable and more pathetic.

  In the last ten years I’ve had one flat tyre and one washer that needed replacing
  More important now is being familiar with electronic devices. My mother died at 95 without knowing much more than changing the tv channel or operating the new automatic washing machine she bought when the wringer one expired. She never came to grips with a microwave
  On the other hand the tins were always full of home baking and fruit cake. There were jars of preserved fruit, marmalade and jam. Rows of bottled salmon in the days before the fishing out at the Rangitata was ruined!

Watched ‘Naked Attraction’ on TV2 last nite.
The girl contestant had all the guys down a handle of Lager….. and then ‘BURP’.
The one who had the biggest and longest she chose to go on a date.
They both met up at a pub later and you should have heard HER! 😀

Just wasn’t sure if it’s a thang out there, or not?

Did anyone hear HDPA interview the admiral who went to help out the flood victims?

He would not let the thirsty people drink the water because it was not certified and would not help the people move the mud as they did not have protective gear. I wonder if he was transgender.

Under pending Australian legislation, New Zealand could face a tougher battle if it wants to end “501” deportations of Australian criminals to NZ.

The Australian Government had hoped to push through tough new immigration controls this week, but the Senate in a surprise has referred the measures to a Parliamentary committee.

The legislation is designed, according to the government, to make it easier to deport people from Australia.

It would make it a criminal offence for someone to refuse to cooperate with officials trying to deport them, punishable by a jail term of one to five years.

Of relevance to NZ, the proposal would also give the Immigration Minister power to target countries refusing to accept its citizens deported from Australia, even allowing the Minister to refuse visas from any citizens of that country as a response.
