The government has announced that reviews of social housing tenancies will soon restart. As with the previous reviews (until Labour stopped them) it will focus on supporting households paying market rent into alternative housing. Potentially affected about 400 households paying market rents that have been in social housing more than 3 years. Noted, however, as at December 2023 there were 1,760 households in social housing paying market rent.

Under the National government hundreds of households moved into the private sector, mostly rentals but also into home ownership.

Random impertinent question. If so many households can afford to pay non-subsidised rent, why aren’t they renting in the private sector?

      “Wealthy” superannuitants have spent the last 50 odd years living within their means, probably bought their first home with 2 mortgages (ever heard of a second mortgage?) and initially paid interest rates well north of 10% and in some cases (in the early 80s nearer 20%). They have worked hard, not expected to travel overseas every year, and have every right to enjoy the fruits of their labours, if you will forgive the cliche. What they have is not the result of graft and corruption.
      Also, what do you mean by wealthy? Perhaps it is someone who owns their own home, pays their rates and taxes and enjoys a comfortable life? Get real. These people are not wealthy, they are able to live on the results of their lifetime of saving, not relying on government handouts. Yes, they are receiving the pension, but isn’t that what they have paid taxes all their lives for?

      This worked very well in Stalin’s Russia.
      First, all the wealthy super annuitants became un-wealthy.
      Then, they became former super annuitants.
      And finally, they were no more.
      
      And their former dwellings were used to the benefit of the working class. With a very rational allocation of one family per room, which prevented them from taking up more space than they needed.

      Colville: We know from experience the clause to refurbish is a battle to have done. We had damage from fists through walls, a heater completely gone (and other damage) and they tried to put it down to “wear and tear” or just denied the heater was ever there. It was massive pain, and luckily we had photo’s to prove the condition of the property/what was there to get it fixed/replaced. Never lease to Housing NZ (KO).

    I know a few people who came out of the Public Service into the Private sector in the mid to late 80’s and they never looked back financially. Some of them moving out of Wellington into rural towns and starting up niche services.
    
    Win for them and a win for the communities they moved to.

    Am sure you are quite correct greybeard. But how hard did these households try to shape up when it was easy as to move into emergency housing followed by increased priority for social housing. Which of course fitted nicely with the need for a few more billions for the social housing.
    
    The coalition government is, they say, going to take a harder line with approvals for emergency housing. Success with that remains to be seen, but will not be easy for those dealing with households not used to taking responsibility.

    A family paying market rents staying in one location will surely be better off moving into their own house.
    Maybe they just need a hand up to transition into their own home. Maybe they need help with a deposit, a government guarantee may well do the job.
    
    The only problem is that the equity warriors will then insist that everyone getting the same treatment.

  I recently talked with a person at Customs who knows about illegal tobacco. Illegal tobacco is already here and it’s already way more sophisticated than the “Tongan tobacco” packs you may have heard of. Think importation of big machines for rolling and packing. The reasons we don’t have an Australian type situation already is because:
  1) Australia is the only Asia / Pacific country with higher taxes than us on tobacco.
  2) Our criminal elements are still learning.

        I gave up smoking 30 years ago. I was smoking 2 packs a day and at $1.30 for each pack it was getting too expensive.
        
        I have been growing tobacco for a few years but not to smoke. I make a nicotine tea to spray on seedlings in the glasshouse. Insects don’t like it.
        
        The tobacco plant is very hardy and easy to grow. If you want to smoke the leaves they first need to be cured to the correct moisture content. Most people don’t know how to do this.

        I think the extent of “the problems” Jews are having at universities is that people are freely disagreeing with what Jews in Israel are doing right now, and this is a “problem” for them because they aren’t used to any dissent against Jews in the West, due to an elaborate system of propaganda that tells people they are beyond criticism.

      What are you talking about? Jews haven’t been oppressed for decades. In fact, they are proportionately the wealthiest, most influential and privileged group you can imagine.
      
      If they weren’t these things, they would constantly try to bully people into submitting to their demands to not be “anti-semitic” (i.e. to not criticise or impede their interests in any way).
      
      Oppressed groups don’t get to set and enforce the moral standards of a society and tell people what they can and cannot think, all the while claiming they are the biggest victims.

        Jkt – yes, unfortunately there are some women who support trans activists. They’re called transmaids and have nothing in common whatsoever with the original feminists of the 60s and 70s (when, and I hope we call agree on this, feminism was a genuinely righteous cause). Transmaids are mostly young (18-30) women who have been socialised by the “be kind” garbage, want to support causes they think are fashionable and think they gain social capital by being kind and nice to transgender people. If they believed they gained social capital by believing in science and reason and sticking up for rights for women (sadly not a fashionable cause) then they wouldn’t support trans activists. This is where, I would suggest, men can help – by supporting young women who go against the “be kind” narrative. (My big fear is that men prefer women to be passive and stupid – but that’s another conversation).

        I disagree and disagree most strongly. Feminism, like all social revolutionary progressive movements runs on the strong fuel of self-righteousness which, among other things, allows any successes to be claimed by the movement but any failures and unintended side effects to be blamed on the opposition.
        There were plenty of radical lunatic feminists of the 60s and 70s (Shulamith Firestone and Andrea Dworkin come to mind) who did massive damage, blowing up the family unit and generally taking the guardrails off society.
        And who actually socialized the pro-trans handmaids of today? Was it their bible-believing patriarchal grandfathers raised in the early 20th century? Or was it their sexually liberated solo-mothers of the later 20th century?
        Feminists and other radical progressives burned down the house that their grandfathers built and now complain that they’re living out in the cold and rain.
        You may be suffering from the very human condition of ret-conning your own history. This is when these movements started pretty much exactly when you first became aware of them, were really cool and righteous when you were young and enthusiastic, but all started to go wrong and crazy about the same time as your hair started to turn grey and your teeth started to fall out.

I was simply talking about the rights of women not to be confined exclusively to the domestic sphere, to pursue jobs other than teacher/nurse/secretary, to be paid the same as men who do those jobs, to get a mortgage without a guarantee from a male relative etc. You know, all that stuff people now take for granted.

  Following links within the story led me to a comment from someone called Shakeel Shamaail, claiming Maori ancestry from several tribes (how did he get that name from that ancestry). Clearly this situation is never going to lead to agreement. “Safe spaces” has become a politically charged term, with a completely lost meaning. One could describe women’s toilets as safe spaces, and thereby ban those not born with a womb. Is that OK? Apparently in this world of seeing only your own viewpoint and vilifying anyone who doesn’t support you it’s OK.

A quick count of a local suburban complex suggests to me that 8 out of 11 small retail convenience businesses are owned by people of belonging to the ethnic communities mentioned. “In [the A-place] we are already well below that [population replacement rate], sitting at 1.56 births per woman in 2023. Our fertility rate has been below 2.1 percent since 2013 and we rely heavily on migration to fill the gap”.

For the birth rate to fall by 25% in a decade is absolutely massive. It should be our number one public policy issue.

In 1985, Marvin Hagler fought Thomas Hearns in a world middleweight championship boxing match. Later known as “The War”, it was one of the greatest fights in history.

In 2024, we had a repeat of this epic fight, as Marvelous Madison Reidy fought Adrian The Hitman Orr, at the Reserve Bank Arena. Here is the fight, followed by my commentary:

The first few minutes show the fighters entering the ring.

The Hitman Orr looks hyper confident, with the eye of the tiger.

Marvelous Madison seems intimidated – this could be an early night for her.

There are a few minutes of preamble. The tension rises. The fighters are introduced to the crowd.

The undisputed champion Adrian The Hitman Orr has a formidable record. A record low OCR of 0.25%. $53 billion bonds bought. $11 billion losses. Still undefeated!

The introductions are finally finished. It’s showtime! Let’s get ready to rumble!

The fight begins. Marvelous Madison edges forward, and pushes out her left hand slowly in a pawing type motion as a range finder, asking about transparency. The Hitman Orr mansplains this away and lunges forward again.

Marvelous Madison throws a stiff jab about the recession, but the Hitman Orr is surprisingly fast on his feet for a big man, and bobs and weaves away from the shot.

The Hitman Orr now enters a long period of throwing jabs, but none of them hit their mark. Still, his work rate is relentless. The fight is now settling into a routine.

BANG! From nowhere, with 7.30 minutes on the clock, Marvelous Madison lands a massive right hand. It’s right on the button! The Hitman Orr IS DOWN! HE’s DOWN! He slowly rises to his feet, but his legs are gone! Let’s look at the slow-motion replay!

Marvelous Madison lined him up with the right hand. She unloaded a question about Reserve Bank claims that the inflation was caused by supply shocks, when clearly demand shocks such as his money printing caused the inflation!

The Hitman Orr is now on his feet, trying to defend himself, but his composure is gone! He babbles nonsensically about relative prices. It is a word salad. His brain is scrambled! He needs the bell for the end of the round to sound. He holds on. He’s babbling about apples and sandwiches and haircuts. His eyes aren’t clear as he babbles irrelevantly about price expectations. He’s hanging on for dear life. He’s looking at the referee despairingly. “It’s a combination of complex things,” he is saying. He’s starts again. He’s jabbing about supply shocks. His legs still look weak, but he looks like he is beginning to recover at last from that massive shot. He’s trying to hold on a lot now.

BANG! From nowhere, around the 12.00-minute mark, The Orr walks onto an unbelievable body shot, and he’s down again! Let’s have a look at the replay!

Orr edged forward, then Marvelous Madison unloaded a massive body shot from an unusual angle, about money printing! It hit Orr right on the ribcage!

He’s up immediately. He is noticeably hurt, but also furious, and doesn’t seem to completely know where he is. He starts snarling to the referee about the shot, saying it was unfair. It looked clean from here!

Now he is going defensive, covering up. There will be no more underestimating this opponent. He has felt her power a couple of time. He is now combative, throwing jab after jab. He’s getting nastier, throwing his head and elbows with abandon. The toing and froing continue. Orr sways the tax question, and a brief brawl ensues over Orr’s money printing brags, but he looks focused now. He talks about stable money.

KABOOM! Orr walked onto another one at 17.30! A HUGE uppercut this time, about purchasing power falling 19.4%. Orr tries to recover his senses, but is hit with another shot! This blow was about inflation being outside range for three years! His legs are gone again! He staggering aimlessly.

Orr is now rope-a-doping! He seems to be hoping that a wall of noise might stop these enormous shots. He’s trying to cover up. Three times, he’s been down.

Around 22 minutes, Orr throws a couple of nasty headbutts, saying he’s not responsible for various matters. He’s tetchy.

Orr now looks like a dog that’s been beaten too much. This mismatch needs to end soon, for the safety of The Orr! He’s punch drunk now.

DING DING DING!!! The final bell at last.

To the judges then. Mr Orr suffered three massive knockdowns.

Marvelous Madison Reidy is pronounced THE WINNER, BY UNANIMOUS DECISION!

  Treasury issues bonds, a dealer buys them, then the Reserve Bank buys them from the dealer. Up goes the money supply with no additional debt owed by the State – just inflation.

Question on private parking buildings (Wilsons). The other half got a ticket due forgetting to pay for parking (via app) on getting to work. The time in the building was only 3 hours, so around $12 worth I believe. The all day charge is $24, but they have ticketed $85. I’m sure I recently read somewhere that legally they can only charge a specific amount, not the over the top $85. Does anyone know more about this? Cheers in advance.

  It is covered by law of contract. In the case of parking companies courts have accepted that by entering a private parking area with terms and conditions displayed, a contract is created between the owner (even if not the driver) and the property occupier. Contracts may not specify ‘penalties’ but may specify ‘liquidated damages’. This requires the party wanting to claim ‘liquidated damages’ to come up with some sort of calculation to justify the ‘damage’ caused eg loss of enjoyment, enforcement costs etc.A ‘general case’ calculation can be done before the event and does not need to be done with any particular precision. The calculation can possibly be successfully challenged if it is completely beyond the pale. Wilsons (and PES) can most probably reasonably justify the $85 is reasonable in the circumstances even though the cost of failing to put money in a parking meter on the street is much less.
  While there may be ways and means of avoiding payment, the harassment, damage to credit rating, risk of clamping or towing if parking in another Wilsons (or PES enforced area) means it is likely to be better just to take the $85 on the nose and be done with it.

I keep reading about public servants being offered redundancy. The companies I have worked for offered zero redundancy (beyond annual leave payout & notice if not worked).

Does anyone have insight into what redundancy provisions are included in public service contracts?

  Minimum redundancy provisions are in law and recorded in employment contracts. Most often the employer will give notice and allow the employee to leave early while paying the employee for the notice period as the redundancy period often matches the notice period.

I frequently glance at the RT Com site. It is mostly Russian propaganda but one thing I have noticed if that anything weird, odd or stupid appears in the news from a Western aligned country it gets prominence. It would appear that they want to show how decadent the West is.
So I was amused to see prominence given to a comment by our Huntly truck driver, Tuheitia, about how dolphins are to be recognised as human beings.

    If the propagandist doesn’t put in the background work and starts getting sloppy and a wee bit above their station then the people will get to a state where they actually feel shortchanged.
    That’s what happened with adern, she started to view the publics acceptance of her propaganda as a foregone conclusion solely on the basis that it came from her.

“David, before the election you said you would get rid of the Climate Change Commission. This got put on the back burner during coalition talks. Rod Carr is due to retire this year. The position for his replacement should be publicly advertised with the required qualifications. I would be very disappointed if Luxon is allowed to pick another climate change alarmist.

Thank goodness wind energy doesn’t pollute like seabed mining does!

      cmm, don’t know where you get your “masses” of nuclear waste amount from, but if you go to the Office of Nuclear Energy website it states all of the nuclear waste produced by the US over the last 60 years would cover one football field to a depth of 10 metres.
      I would think that was pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Plenty of inhospitable geologically stable places to dump it.

        It depends on how you classify nuclear waster.
        
        A football field to 10 metres would maybe be the high grade waste. Not low grade waste.
        
        As old power stations get deconstructed they are considered low level waste (except stuff in the containment shell that is high/medium). All that material has to be controlled and disposed of. This is why they are expecting to take over a century to deconstruct Three Mile Island and Sellafield.

  I Remember, have a listen to Rodney Hide interviewing Professor Kelly on Rabbit Hole Radio recently. It’s on replay. Peter Williams interviewed him the last time he was over here from Cambridge Uni and nothing has changed.
  He has written a report and calculated it will cost our economy 55b to achieve net zero by 2030.
  He states it is impossible,and the pollies, Luxon included, need to stop kicking the can down the road and start providing some numbers and time lines with a plan if they are serious.
  If we go down this path it’s going to be all bad. Reduced standard of living at a greatly increased cost per household.
  That’s assuming CO2 is this dangerous toxic gas the media and the greens would have us believe it is. Spare me!

    It is much worse.
    It is not going to happen.
    
    Net Zero is impossible without dramatically reducing our standards of living, as in going back 200 years.
    
    There are no electric combine harvesters. So no wheat, barley, maize, or vegetable oils like canola or sunflower. Also no soya beans so no tofu. So 90% of the world starves to death.
    
    There are no electric bulldozers, graders or motor scrapers.
    
    I have seen a small electric digger designed to work inside an enclosed space but real diggers use diesel.
    
    There are electric trucks. They cost twice a diesel truck but can only do half the work.

Voice cloning’s the latest artificial intelligence development that threatens disruption.

Software from OpenAI, called Voice Engine, clones a voice from a 15-second clip of a person talking, including the cadence, and with indications of the speaker’s emotion. The synthetic voice can then read and “speak” words it has scanned.

Because of fears of misuse, OpenAI is restricting the program – in preview mode – to fellow developers, and a reasonable guess is that Open AI doesn’t want users monkeying round with US Presidential election candidates’ voices.

“Partners must also clearly disclose to their audience that the voices they’re hearing are AI-generated,” the company said. OpenAI has added a “watermarking” system to help detect any AI-generated audio from Voice Engine.

OpenAI, the leader in AI, transitioned in 2019 from a fully non-profit research organisation to having as an arm a company which now has a total value as much as $US80 billion (about $NZ134 billion). Sam Altman is the leader. Under the organisation’s complex structure he was sacked, then returned.

    I’m assuming “loved ones” isn’t a prerequisite for the program , but dead is.

Yes, this is an intriguing AI development.

Altman gave a sort of pre-announcement of the software, Voice Engine, at Davos 72 days ago.

This is from the New York Times, 29 March, Friday, US time (i.e. approximately today NZ time) reporting on the Voice Engine:

Now, it [OpenAI] has unveiled technology that can recreate someone’s voice.

The high-profile A.I. start-up said on Friday that a small group of businesses was testing a new OpenAI system, Voice Engine, that can recreate a person’s voice from a 15-second recording. If you upload a recording of yourself and a paragraph of text, it can read the text using a synthetic voice that sounds like yours.

The text does not have to be in your native language. If you are an English speaker, for example, it can recreate your voice in Spanish, French, Chinese or many other languages.

The report includes a 16 second online demonstration of VoiceEngine cloning a man’s voice in first, English, then, AI-translated, in Portuguese.

It’s closer than mimicking by an actor.

  It is interesting, but I can see how it would also consume some people, especially if they use the voice of a deceased loved one. But it could also help at least one president deliver a coherent speech…

My inner child had a good laugh at the comment about fresh skid marks on the crossing. Thanks for the laugh newshub

Police have impounded a car spotted doing burnouts on central Gisborne’s rainbow pedestrian crossing on Friday night.

The car was allegedly doing skids on the crossing at about 8:30pm.

Officers checked CCTV footage and identified the car which left “fresh skid marks” on the crossing, a police spokesperson told Newshub.
