The Kiwiblog award for the most Woke organisation in Aotearoa this year goes to Sudima Hotels.

On LinkedIn the Human Resources Manager was pictured with a newly promoted team leader. Nice, except it was announced that she undertook her promotion interview “in her first language Te Reo”. This was facilitated for the interview panel by a translator.

The posting was followed by a large number of “wonderfuls, congrats, awws” from the largely female Human Resources luvvies who inhabit LinkedIn.

Give me a break. You can bet this was PR window dressing for Sudima to show off to the corporate market what a wonderfully progressive accomodation provider they are. Pure fakery.

God, corporations are shallow.

    Could a migrrant from China or Cambodia or Holland have the interview conducted in their mother tongue via a translator??
    How about a second/third generation Samoan, Russian or Frenchman wanting the interview in the ancestral tongue?
    
    Te Reo is a language used by a very small minority in this country. It is of virtually no use in day to day interaction in most of NZ….
    
    Conducting the interview at a private corporation in this way is just ridiculous kowtowing to a narrative of Maori primacy in all matters
    
    People want to Korero in Te Reo in their personal lives – kapai E Hoa.
    
    But this bs being forced in to business and government is not a good idea – it is leading to staff disengagement and quite a bit of unhappiness

      Maybe, but there are companies doing far worse than this in nz, and pushing what they do on to their customers.
      
      Btw, this was done in private. Domino’s encourage their staff to greet customers in Māori, they have a Māori menu. So which is more woke out of those two?

        Companies are free to do what they want, their customers will reply. But if you want to call a company the most woke in nz when it doesn’t even come close to being so then the poster needs to do better.         The ownership trail of Sudima Hotels leads to Mauritius, an international tax haven.
        
        International tourists must provide a huge part of business for NZ hotels, especially those of the Sudima scale.
        
        English is the international language of tourism. The only reason to promote a remote indigenous language in an international hotel would be as a tourist gimmick.
        
        Regardless, whoever put the money, hot or legitimate, into Sudima through Mauritius, may have priorities that differ from those of typical NZ investors.

    They posted something to LinkedIn for their staff to see, they haven’t pushed it on Facebook or twitter, they didn’t push it to the msm.
    
    If you are going to claim a company is the most woke in nz then you have to do better than this dribble.
    
    Spark who jump on every cause, push it through their social media platform, in their adverts are more woke in their little finger than this company.
    
    Government departments who require you know irrelevant shit about Māori are more woke than this company
    
    This is a piss poor attempt to call a company woke when they wouldn’t even come close to some of what goes down in nz

    My problem is that it is a lie. You can guarantee te Reo is not her first language. You can also guarantee that if there was no assessment of her ability to communicate in any language likely to be used by her customers then the interview was also a fake exercise.
    
    There is a problem when we come to accept lying as just the normal way we do things.

      Maybe, but open your eyes and you will see far worse than this company. You want to claim that because they did this they are the most woke in nz, you must not have any idea what other companies do in this country, this is minor, tame, doesn’t even rate. This was something they aren’t pushing out, you had to go searching for it. Not on their Facebook, their twitter, not in the media, just something shared with their employees on LinkedIn.

    For a start, I’ll bet a pound to a pinch of goat poo that it’s a lie. First language? I sincerely doubt it. If the child was solely taught an until-recently unwritten stone-age language with marginal utility in the hotel business, she was greatly disadvantaged by her solo mother.

    the question is, of what benefit is to the company to have an employee that is conversant in Te Reo?
    
    I can understand if they had Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, even French and German.
    
    I imagine that the number of Te Reo speakers that do not speak english is Zero, so the only benefit to the company is intangible and non monetary.

  The Sudima has been pressured by a clever applicant. As well as having an interpreter, who when making there take on answers can alter words ,phrases, sentences to suit the applicant.
  Like having to people applying for the job. Also perhaps the Sudima could face legal action if they didn’t appoint a Maori to fill the spot.

  I don’t know if it most woke but certainly infested. Got an email introducing my new fertilizer rep. Apparently american origin has worked for lots of woke pseudo govt organisations and the first opening introduction was in te-reo. I think I will be doing my own fert recommendations and ordering until they move on , which is about every 2 years when the go to insurance or regional council type jobs

  The US will pour more in to bleed Russia further – and CHina will cheer them on, as China has eyes on the far east portion of the Russian Federation.
  
  Putin is playing a very dangerous game – he may win a tactical victory in Ukraine. Not sure he will to be frank as NATO will ramp up supplies over summer months
  
  But strategically he has:
  
  > Shown Russia to be an unreliable economic partner for Europe. Long term those markets maybe replaced by China and India, but Western Europe is where the really profit margins are
  > Shown the Finns and Swedes that NATO membership is 100% in their interested due to the attack one, attack all provision in the NATO Treaty document
  > Bleed Russia of a lot of its elite troops and used up a lot of its best weaponry
  > Allowed the US and NATO to see Russian battlefield tactics and logistics capability. They are vulnerable to a full US military operation if they ever confront the US, as part of NATO or one one one
  > Demonstrate to all Russian mothers that their sons are mere cards to play and lose in service of Putins ambition.
  
  Ukraine v Russia is going to rumble on for years. All the talk of quick victories or decisive wins on the field by some pundits are contradicted by others.

      The idea that China is seeking to seize Russian territory in the Far-East is a Western fantasy.
      Nobody ever bothers to answer why they would do it except for postulating some sort of weird nationalist Chinese resentment about events that happen two centuries and a couple of dynasties and empires ago.
      So why would Beijing go to war with Moscow?
      They would lose their strongest and largest ally, lose trillions of dollars, possibly millions of men, open up a +2000km border to attacks and counter attacks from Russia all while Indian forces are in the Himalayas to the west and the US Navy is in the Pacific to the east.
      Their massive project for the 21st century, The Belt and Road plan, to link up right across Eurasia would be ruined.
      Ideal tank country? This isn’t the days of Genghis Khan and the steppe warriors, when you could gather your forces and go charging across the land for weeks without opposition. This is the age of atomic weapons, intercontinental missiles and satellite surveillance. Tank armies can be spotted in seconds and stopped in minutes from the other side of the globe.
      And we still haven’t considered Why? What would be the benefit for Beijing in doing such a thing? Is it to gain the oil, gas and minerals that Russia is already selling to them as fast as it can dig them out of the ground? Or is it that the Chinese people wish to move their shrinking population from the massive cities of the warm south into the wastelands of the freezing north?

    To your last point I agree, Russia is surely entering into a repeat of it’s Afghanistan failure. They will never survive the coming years of internal patriotic resistance in Ukraine. After Putin is gone, so will Russia’s occupation end. What a waste – all for one man’s narcissistic ambition.

    Russia is going to win in Ukraine and win big.
    The will annex territories, move their borders westwards, dispose, liquidate or exile Zelensky and his faction and create a demilitarized buffer zone in rump Ukraine.
    New Russian territories in the east will be quickly repaired by enthusiastic workers and paid for by profits from gas and minerals. Rump Ukraine in the west will be rebuilt slowly by EU/USA charity and paid for with deficit spending.
    Russia will end up with a larger, stronger, more experienced military. Their economy will also be larger, more productive and insulated from any financial sanctions that the West might wish to try against it in the future.
    Their society and politics will be purged of West lending liberals, Orthodox nationalist will be stronger and Putin even more popular.
    China seizing territory in the Russian far-East is a fanciful Western dream, as will be explained below.

  The US learned the economic benefits of forward funding war a century ago. And in this instance the majority of their funding has been both weapons that were about to be retired and newer systems which they now have priceless data on real world performance. Not to mention the economic benefits US industry will gain from the Ukraine rebuild which will be in the trillions.
  
  The average Joe sees a waste of money – the US sees aong term investment… along with the geopolitics.

  Yeah, Russia has run out of hardware. Can’t muster significant numbers of tanks or armoured personnel carriers for assaults anymore, down to desperate scraping together barely functional left over antiques, and have nearly run out of artillery too. Result being that they are taking huge losses now in offense, using motorbikes and golf carts to try and aid their meat wave assaults while ever more advanced drones (now with terminal AI targeting to beat jamming) pick them off.
  
  And new US mil aid package has seen Russian bombers start to get taken out again, curtailing their major recent advantage in glide bombs, while long range ballistic ATACMS are allowing Ukraine to strike major bases 1-200km from front line pushing back air bases and reducing sortie rates. Ukraine has also now got shells to hit Russia hard which they had been short on for last 6 months.
  
  On other side Ukraine is running out of infantry. But longer range high tech stand-off weaponry helps that a lot. Still might be the limiting factor for Ukraine’s defense. But if they can escalate their deep strike drone production they will subject Russia to withering cost (destroying Russian oil refineries, pipelines, power stations and transformers, bridges and rail is cheapest way to end war)
  
  I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin calls time on war soon. Cost of gains made is escalating, they’ve almost exhausted their military hardware and their offense has nearly culminated.

    Back to the delusions that Russia is fighting with shovels again are we? This is why we find ourselves in a losing war in the first place. If we don’t take our adversary seriously he is going to take the entire of Ukraine while commentators yap on about ATACM Missiles or F-16 or Abrams Wunder Weapons that America decide to send in limited supply.

    If Maori, and to a lesser extent Polynesians in general, offended at “white” rates then we could close almost half our prisons.
    That is not opinion. That is fact.
    Even better if we all offended at Chinese rates.
    
    Since the “Maori” in question are primarily of European genetics, this is not a race/genetic issue. It is a cultural issue.

    The Maori roll is about 10% of the voter base of whole of NZ, so for them Maori party to get 3.5% is pretty high.
    
    Of course most Maori who care little about Maori nationalism will likely sign up for the general roll.

  There are around 8,000 Māori gang members out of a Maori population of 800,000. But the 800,000 includes children and old people. Most gang members are male aged between 20 and 40. So of that subset, it will more like 5 to 7%. Which I think is a high percentage and is a real concern. Way too many children will be growing up with a gang influence in their lives.

    Wayne, is it really just 8000 (or 10000)? Maybe that is just patched members?
    
    But as you say those numbers are from a small slice of the population (males, 20 to 35 or so) – just like prison population. Their girlfriends and the 14 year olds that do their bidding probably don’t show up in that 8 or 10, 000 count but really are gangsters too.
    
    Still, even 2% is a huge number. 7% is of course way worse. The impact of crime is non-linear. A society with 98% non-criminals and 2% criminals is still a high crime society. A society with 7% criminals is a huge problem.
    
    Worse yet is the trajectory we are on. Crime is going up.

      Incidently there was a Major Mass Corona ejection early this year but fortunately not at Earth, This one appears to be pointing close to Earth.

  It’s quite strange, we have not seen much Aurora till the last couple of years, I remember late 60s and 70s seeing it every night when clear skies. It’s quite strange, no climate change when we had Aurora back then, we are getting Aurora now, and every time it turns southerly down here it is extremely cold, snow has been reported well down quite a few times the last 6 weeks, I think k this winter is going to be cold

What qualifications do you need?

Well astonishingly, you do not need to know anything about transport. There is no mention of such knowledge in the selection criteria. No, I am not making that up.

However, you do need:

1. An understanding of Te Reo
2. An understanding of Tikanga (Māori customary practices or behaviours); and
3. An understanding of Matauranga Māori (Māori knowledge and practice)

1, 2, and 3 are mandatory criteria. You must meet them. As a result, I would say that the potential pool of candidates for this job is few in number ☹ .

    I don’t see how those selection criteria will get them a candidate who can manage the Government’s top transport advisors. Let’s say there are 50 people in New Zealand who could do the job well. Maybe 15 could be persuaded to apply. How many of those 15 will be able to speak te reo, and meaningfully understand Matauranga Maori and tikanga Maori?
    
    I am gobsmacked TBH. The calibre of these people is important for the government and for all of us.

I haven’t watched Q & A for a long time. I had some time this morning and wanted to watch Mark Mitchell’s interview. First I watched Jack Tame interviewing Ayesha Verrall and then Mitchell, the contrast was amazing. Not one interruption or fact checking of Verrall and continually interrupting and challenging Mitchell and talking over him. Smart arse, projecting his contempt for Mitchell in his answers. Tame did do a good job of sticking up for the gangs and criminals though.

      Wyner doesn’t attempt to provide a figure for deaths; instead, he uses probability analysis of Hamas-supplied numbers to argue that the daily figures are pre-determined fakes because, among other things:
      
      1) the daily increases in deaths are implausibly regular;
      2) there is no correlation between children’s and women’s deaths;
      3) there is a negative correlation between men’s deaths and combined children’s/women’s deaths.

        That there are discrepancies in the Hamas is not really relevant unless more accurate figures can be verified. It’s all very well to accept the casualty figures are overstated, but that just leads to the question of what would be the ‘right’ numbers to be proportionate and justified.

The Rugby-
I’m a Crusaders fan but maybe the time has come for the coach, management and players to accept that they are not going to win the championship this year.
That’s sport. No team can be top of the pile forever.
For the coach to once again be crying into his beer and offering public apologies in the media for his players is not necessary and is more embarrassing for the fans than the team not winning.
And as for Ethan Blackadder, who may be an outstanding player of the game when he is actually able to do it, he is too injury prone to be considered. The Crusaders this year were very low on fit, capable, team members, but they chose to nurse one along instead of getting someone else who was fit to play more than half a game every third weekend.
Time to draw a line under this season and get on with building a new, more resilient team for next year.
Just my two bob’s worth.

Dear God, these two are simply insane.
The red-headed illegitimate son of a British commoner ( this late and lamented British commoner having been married to a Windsor royal Prince who had had a long-term affair with a woman he eventually married and subsequently made into a Queen ) hooks up with a previously-married-and-divorced female American actress who apparently has some desirable genetic connection to someone in Nigeria.
And we are assured that this is cause for celebration.
My head hurts.

  Who assures us this is cause for celebration? All the sources I’ve read (which include mainstream media in the UK) see it as cause for ridicule.
