      My daughter is 23, and sharp as a razor. She is seriously debating with her intended as to whether they can bring children into a world of “global boiling”.         David, I just got back from a meeting with some clown from the CCC. He is not a scientist but an economist. I asked him if he had heard of Bjorn Lomborg, a well-known climate change economist. He had not heard of him.
        
        I then asked him if he considered nuclear as recommended by COP18. He said no need as solar and wind will replace fossil fuels. That is idiotic.
        
        I then asked if he knew how long solar and wind turbines last. He did not have a clue.
        
        This is why I support Groundswell and the Methane Science Accord.

    I have disclosed here that I have made money out of climate change policy by providing advice on policy settings and also compliance. However that was nearly 20 years ago. There was minimum public interest let alone hysteria.
    
    I recall a senior Minister in the last year of the Helen Clark Labour government telling me that there was no way any New Zealand government would buy massive offshore carbon credits, effectively sending money to countries like Belarus, Indonesia and Pakistan. Fast forward less than 20 years and we have a National Government continuing with the first installment of $1.3 billion in payments to developing countries for “climate finance”, a bill which will exceed $10 billion by 2030.
    
    Sadly “climate change” has become a religion, and heretics are cast out and ruined. In New Zealand, you don’t need to be in the “climate change is a scam” crowd, which I am not. You simply need to question the “net zero” targets or point out the consequences of meeting those targets.

      Allowing for the historical inaccuracies of the IPPC ‘forecasts’ (especially in the common use of worst case scenarios for political reasons), it’s a fools errand behaving as if they are now magically true.
      
      If we now add the exceptions China and India receive and their quite rational behaviour building lots of coal fired power stations we’re going to be living with the (likely well liveable) consequences of increased CO2 levels. Net Zero is not only not achievable in the current geopolitical environment it’s highly likely it’s not required anyway.

      I bought Belarusian carbon credits for the organisation I worked for at 7c a unit and we used them to pay for our emissions.
      
      Other policy advisers argued we should buy these at the government cap price of nearly $25 …. because it was the right thing to do!
      
      I had to debate hard to convince management to go with my advice! What a f…… joke.
      
      Most of the other advisers are still advising! Ouch!!

        I recall debating with a government advisor on climate change. He was an advocate of reducing the NZ dairy herd. I made the obvious point – China, India, and Brazil will just grab that market share. It won’t reduce global emissions.

  The ‘global Boiling’ scam is entrenched and way past the point of no return. By that, I mean the central and local governments in the Western world have baked it into policy, plans and financial commitments.
  
  Just one significant example at a local level. The Otago Regional Council currently has their draft 10 year plan out for feedback. Buried within their dribble is a monstrous $425 million plan to buy electric buses and expand public transport because of…….. our commitment to combatting climate change.!!
  
  This will be funded through 20%+ annual rate increases and a huge increase in debt. These buses have an average battery life of 8-10 years, so this spend is baked in until the money runs out. They also have to build massive bus charging stations in Dunedin and Queenstown.

Two quotes from the just released report on the state of media in NZ.

“But when reliable information is conflated with entertainment and extreme opinion, then citizens suffer and manipulated polarised outcomes are more likely”. “The mixing of fact and opinion in news stories is identified as a cause of the public’s low level of trust”.

I rate the main contributor to the report Gavin Ellis. He is astute and has sound judgement. MSM has only itself to blame for arrogantly foisting a range of juvenile and Marxist views on the NZ public. We must not let the Government bail them out in a way that lets them carry on their ideological spin.

    The media is a problem today that effects New Zealand today and there won’t be a recognisable New Zealand in a few years unless it’s sorted.
    The media hoisted Jacinda of the Plauge on their shoulders worshipped her, she was put there by that POS Winston. There is nothing to stop them doing it again in 2 years time.

      If the government bails out the media, the people will scream.
      
      If they don’t, the media will go insane.

        The Minister should simply say that we are not bailing out media but we will progress legislation to allow media to invoice Meta etc. and take enforcement action if/when Meta tells them to GF.

      I disagree, there is a role for government in broadcasting and journalism and it’s an important one. Or should that be, an important part of the government’s role involves broadcasting and journalism?
      The government has to get the word out to the people and has to hear the word back from the people, always has done. That’s public relations and communications, that crosses right into the territory of journalism. And if you don’t tell your story then someone else will tell it for you and not necessarily to your advantage.
      A citizen in a nation is not the same as being a consumer in a marketplace. The market is for the benefit of the people, the people do not exist for the benefit of the market.
      If the information space of NZ gets turned over to the likes of Time-Warner, Meta, X and Hollywood then we are all doomed. With no loyalty or responsibilities to anything but “The Market” we are all grist in their mills and meat in their sandwiches.

  I say the current lot are being “fired”, like on “The Apprentice”, but they either don’t recognise that fact, or accept the fact that they have failed their customers, and have been abandoned.
  
  I struggle to find a single source for a comprehensive general news source that I can trust in New Zealand. At one stage I would have expected that The NZ Herald, a “newspaper of record” would / should have been an option. But it, like Stuff, and Newshub all fail IMHO.
  
  I’m not a trained journalist, but I know when I see biased, incomplete, or patsy stories. And that makes me uncomfortable, and certainly not inclined to pay for it.
  
  The way ahead for these media organisations is to engage with their customers, recognise that the customers are also intelligent, and give them what they wish to see and read. And present their customers by actually questioning the narratives being presented by politicians and the many lobby groups.
  
  I refuse to visit Stuff website anymore because they have a published policy of not reporting on certain views. I do not respect any publication that refuses to report and investigate the power of the pharmaceutical companies over our medical industry, and their role, which is now amply reported overseas.
  
  When there is such an option (and I’m not holding my breath) I will gladly pay for it, and amply. In the meantime, I’m left picking up bits from here and there, all the while filtering it to adjust for the major biases currently there. That makes the experience wearisome and lacking enjoyment.
  
  Sadly it seems that only independent outlets are one’s that are indepedently funded (eg. “X”), where at least I have the power to determine what I will not read.

      I know there are some large companies that subscribe to NZ Herald – I have access to NZH Premium through my employer, even though my role doesn’t have any requirement or need for it.
      
      No idea how many companies do this, but if a substantial number of the larger businesses do the same as my employer and pay for all their staff then you can figure that’s a considerable amount of revenue.

    This “Save the media eco-system” is an interesting metaphor that is used quite a bit in the report (I’m going through it now). They really portray themselves as the Amazonian rainforest or a poor polar bear sitting on a melting iceberg, rather than as a tyrannosaurus or brontosaurus two days after the comet hit or a buggy and stagecoach maker ten years after the automobile rolled off the production line.
    Every one of them can adapt or die, and by “die” I mean get another job. Many of those old stagecoach makers went on to build bodies for the news cars and trucks.
    radical change is not only coming it is already here. The Koi Tū: Centre for Informed Futures report does have some interesting ideas, charitable status for some local news gathering entities for example but spare me from the weeping and gnashing of teeth about an “extinction level event” before we get to commercial like
    “For less than the price of a cup of coffee, you can help save this poor media consultant from eating out of the trash and sleeping under a bridge at night.”

Green MP Tamatha Paul is back on the rent controls rant. But ACT’s housing spokesperson Cameron Luxton said the Greens call for rent controls is “economically illiterate”.

Meanwhile, Ms Paul rolls out “Housing is a human right” conveniently forgetting that the ‘human right’ New Zealand signed up to is ‘adequate housing’. New Zealand has vast central and local rules around what counts as ‘adequate’ and what a surprise that meeting them has led to rent increases and pressure on supply.

So “economically illiterate”? Yep.

Fortunately the exodus of families, taxpayers and asset owners is providing a supply buffer with some real estate agents reporting a good proportion of homes for sale are for just that reason.

    Our government must be brave and build some high density complexes and house those who act anti socially, those who struggle to achieve good outcomes through their own hard work and those down on their luck at taxpayer subsidised rents. This will allow government to provide wrap around services to those “dealt” a bad hand in life.
    
    This type of intervention will provide a path out of poverty for those who are prepared to rehabilitate while having their human rights catered to.
    
    Some will choose to stay living in these housing units and enjoy the comforts of “home”. Home is where the heart is.
    
    Samantha will call this heartless, but this is what human rights look like. Equality of outcomes is not a reality of the human condition. Sorry.

Yet I see where once again it has been postponed.
Now until May 28th. No reason given.

Are they hoping if they keep delaying, people might forget about it?
Some are saying it reeks of political interference 🙁

        I find myself, after many years of contemplation and consideration firmly in the Pro-sanity and Anti-lunacy camp, which overlaps a lot with the Pro-reality and Anti-fantasy camp. This does lead me to an anti-trans position which I would frame as anti-trans ideology not anti any particular trans individuals, I liked and even admired Georgina Beyer for example, take people as you find them.
        The Wachowski brothers (whom I have never met) are now the Wachowski sisters. After they got what must have been a couple of hundred million from Hollywood for their “Matrix” movies, those guys, who were already deep into the dark waters of transhuman fantasy, decided to build a submarine to take them even further down.
        Those guys are loons, highly intelligent and creative loons but loons non the less.
        Posy Parker is not a loon or a shit stirring radical, she is a sensible if slightly annoyed woman. She is even married to a man, and I believe has two children, both of which I presume are humans, she probably even has the desire to be a grandma someday.
        All perfectly normal, even admirable stuff. She is addressing the trans issue because the trans issue is here today. Fifty years ago, a woman like her would have been collecting for orphans in Africa and fifty years before that she would have been knitting socks for soldiers in the trenches.

    Over decades women have fought for and gained rights and protections that we now take for granted. Those rights and protections are enshrined (in western circles at least) and there is no need for Posie Parker to rail against the parts of society that do not pose a threat to women.
    Where there is a threat to women she is clearly stating her position, and it is very clearly a position to protect women. It just so happens that the trans community is the one threatening those rights.

It’s almost like women’s rights become a thing only in the ashes of a civilisation, and aren’t a precondition for its growth.   Otago’s financial survival rests on its ability to attract high-paying foreign students or convince the central government to increase its taxpayer funding. Neither of these will happen in time to avoid the financial carnage.
  
  Otago’s current plan for its growing debt and ongoing annual deficits is to spend more and borrow more. And it’s foreign student strategy is to target Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Cook Islands, etc.

On the Waitangi Tribunal website –

However, the entire governance scene has become so muddied now, particularly after actions of the previous Labour Coalition “Government”, that a government law is now overdue to merely assert again that Government actually has the right to govern.

Does Luxon disapprove of that?

Does anyone – besides Labour, some Maori, some non-Maori Maori and the Waitangi Tribunal – disagree with that?

  That’s exactly what it is, and it has been that way forever in this country. Rape is not uncommonly followed by a murder. If convicted, the murderer gets “life” with a minimum non parole period (NPP). That period is NEVER increased because of the rape that preceded the murder.

    The most recent such case I can think of is that of Paul Tainui, one of the 13 or so men still alive in NZ who have murdered twice.
    
    Before he killed his last victim, he raped her over an extended period. He got “life” with a minimum NPP of 28 years. He would have got something like that anyway, without the rape. Why was it not LWOP? Surely if you kill twice LWOP is the only just sentence?

There are approximately 5.5 million Palestinians, of whom approx 35,000 have been killed in the current conflict (if you believe Hamas).   Here is an idea. If workers on a floor want plants for the office, pitch in $20 each. Then go down to the garden entre to buy some plants.
  
  I bet a cha su pork bun that the folk “renting” the plants will charge a small fortune. They will mimic the prices charged by caterers to provide lunches for public service lunch time meetings in Wellington. You would not believe the prices they charge for terrible food 🙁 I told a couple of them that I could arrange someone to cater good food at half the price. I then got a lecture about ‘preferred suppliers’.

  I benefited greatly from my university studies. However, I would not encourage any young person to go to a university in New Zealand. (The top Australian universities are better, but even they are becoming infected.).
  
  My exceptions would be someone who is passionate about becoming a doctor, engineer or scientist. You don’t have any choice. But if your child is leaving school and wants to go to university because ‘they can’t think of anything else’ then no. Go ‘find yourself’ on an Australian cattle station or mine, not at Otago University.
  
  For those inclined, excelling in a trade can provide reliable employment and a good income.
  
  For those who do excel in physics and mathematics, I would urge any young person to look at commercial pilot training. Despite what the climate change alarmists want, airlines are going to boom for the next 30 years. If you train at a good flight school in Australia or New Zealand, you can work anywhere in the world. (Just avoid Pakistan, and most of Africa 🙁

    Actually, go get a trade first THEN do your commercial pilots license, while working in your trade.
    The guys who had a trade were sitting pretty during COVID when we all got made redundant as Pilots.
    
    A lot went back to building. Then when the music came on again, they went back flying.
    
    Don’t let the math thing throw you. The hardest math I’d probably do daily is subtraction and addiction with the tiniest bit of trig thrown in there…
    I would actually say, basic programming would be more these days as it pervades everything. If you can string a basic program together and learn how to automate stuff on software, that is far more valuable.
    Africa is actually ok. Its Papua New Guinea you got to watch out for. High terrain, short airstrips and “friendly” locals.
    
    Go learn to fly in Australia, the aviation industry is recognised for what it is over here in Oz, a vital part of the infrastructure and economy. You can’t just chuck stuff on a truck overnight and drive it across the country. If you want it overnight, it’s gotta fly.

Milton Mueller: Internet Governance Project founder on backing out of the Christchurch Call

Newstalk ZB can reveal allegations the Christchurch Call has silenced members of its Advisory Network – and pressured them to not release critical reports of member countries.
Because of that, a group called the Internet Governance Project, has quit.
Project founder and Network reviewer, Milton Mueller says India wasn’t honouring its commitments.
“They really didn’t seem to have much of an official commitment to go along with the Christchurch Call at all, so we simply wrote that up.”
Meanwhile, the Government says it will soon reveal whether it will keep paying Dame Jacinda Ardern to work on the Christchurch Call.

David Garrett, with reference to your comments regarding Sweden. I did go to Malmo recently, mainly because it was an easy drive over the bridge from Denmark. It is indeed a muslim shit hole as you say. I felt extremely un nerved walking around amongst the beautiful old buildings only to be glowered at by groups of muslims hanging around the streets and squares. They actually looked menacing. What has Sweden done to itself? I fear for the republic of Ireland now, it too is being invaded. I am curious to know why I couldn’t reply to your post on this, the only option under it was “Report”. Luxon says National are looking at the “root cause”. He mentions “root cause” more than once, but does not explicitly say what he believes the root cause is except for “inflation”.

Does inflation really cause unemployment? Sure, inflation reduces economic activity which can reduce some retail spending etc, but is that enough to explain unemployment increasing by almost half?

I would suggest a far more important contributor to unemployment is that being unemployed is a pretty good option, particularly if you have an illegal (or at least off-the-books) side gig.

We are importing tens of thousands of foreigners to fill roles, so the employment is clearly there.

Do we really have an unemployment problem or a getting-off-your-arse problem?

It suddenly occured to me that if we didn’t have a Labor, Green, and Maori party (and those who support them) NZ would become a crime-free paradise.

JAG drags the standards in parliament ever lower – even Mallard was only fighting outside the chamber!
Still, I have no doubt it will play well with the average Green voter and should see another bounce in the polls for the Greens.
IMO Greens and TPM are mostly not fit and proper people to be in parliament. They are certainly more representative OF their supporters rather than representatives FOR them.
