      I agree there is a lack of inspirational leadership throughout the west, and that may account for some of the indifference as you suggest. But I strongly suspect one in three of those polled could not name someone without being prompted with a list to choose from. I’d love to be wrong.

  The poll last night highlighted a key risk to the government receiving a second term. If New Zealand First falls below 5 percent, there does not seem to be a path to a majority for National and ACT, and once Winston finally retires there goes New Zealand First.
  
  IMO National has no workable plan for increasing its share of the vote. It’s attempts to appease the woke and the left will not persuade any of these people to switch their support to National. Every time they do something ‘half hearted’, they enrage the media and the left. That rage would have been no different had they done the job properly.
  
  It would be a mistake to be complacent and say ‘well in New Zealand all governments get a second term’. However we have never had a three party coalition under MMP. Yesterday’s poll shows that this could be a big problem for National.

This government has set about delivering exactly what it said, I read messages on news channels today about tgd poll saying the deeply unpopular policies are doing this, what has been delivered which is deeply unpopular? Heard woke nut bar last night saying she blames the fast track consenting, why are people afraid of large scale work getting consented quickly instead of finishing that project in the bin?       I watched the tvnz item with Maiki Sherman on you tube to get an idea of how balanced reporting has become with the new govt, words straight after the obligatory greeting in Maori were “political turbulence ahead, brace for impact, freefall” etc, you’d think she was describing a near miss plane crash and not some inconsequential poll that was done by the same TV station as employed by the reporter.

        The fact that the wokester, Luxon, does not want to see ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill past the first reading is very telling.
        
        He is a maori sympathiser and has bought into maori wonderfulness.
        
        A major reason that Labour was booted out was to get of the maori takeover. Luxon is failing to read the room on this.

      This situation was entirely predictable. They are playing around the edges with little bits out of the coalition agreements but failing to make the big calls eg public service, removing maorification such as shown by BY in job ads, education, etc. so the people that voted for them are now pissed off in addition to people that already hated them.
      
      Until they stop trying to appeal to lefty voters they will continue to slide.

    Let’s assume the poll is accurate (maybe it is maybe it isn’t). So what does that then mean for NZ?
    
    1. The majority of voters can not stomach the realities of life and face up to deficits and debt.
    2. The majority of voters want special rights for people with any Maori genetics.
    3. The majority of voters don’t want to get (slightly) tougher on crime.
    
    Considering that the coalition govt hasn’t even dialed back anywhere near to 2017 levels of spending (so we are significantly more socialist than in 2017) – yet the polls indicate that the majority want the hard left to come back in.
    
    If that is the case – then NZ is buggered and we will get what we deserve. New Zimbabwe here we come!

      More likely it just means that voters are expressing an opinion about the state of NZ today. The task for the current government is the same as it has always been: to turn things around and get NZ back on track. As long as they achieve that by the next election they will be ok.

        My grandfather died at 84, he smoked all his life. My Dad died at 94, he smoked for his entire working life. Will I enjoy more time on this planet than either? An intermittent secondary smoker. I think the odds are not in my favour. (If you ask me again in future I will tell you that my odds are more favourable, than yesterday)
        
        We all run out of time but the odds seem to favour Winston.
        
        PS: Neither died of lung cancer or with any signs of lung cancer.

        We’ve been breeding resistance to breathing smoke for 100’s of Millenia, no doubt there are a lot of genes in circulation that confere near-immunity to lung cancer/disease from cigarette smoke. A lot of people don’t have resistance, but many will.

    I expect voters on the right to do what is necessary to ensure that a Coalition government can again be formed. This means voting to ensure that there is no wasted vote on the right. Peters base seems to be particularly flakey, and he needs to be aware that going into full ‘foreign minister’ mode will again see him perceived as becoming detached from what is going on here at home: he needs to be visible and ‘in the fight’, and not leaving it all to Jones.
    If push comes to shove and NZ First are polling at 4.8% going into the election with the Coalition parties looking to fall short of government, would I vote NZ First? I believe I would have to. If Labour / TPM / Greens get in in their current radical mood then New Zealand is totally screwed. It would be economic and societal ruination for this country. It is no time to be passive about fighting this menace, because the left, including the MSM, are vocal and energised. Rusted-on National blue-bloods should think outside their box about how they can influence this nations future, whether that be by becoming more politically active, cancelling MSM subscriptions and advertising, voting strategically, or influencing those around them as to the danger.

    Firstly, NZ First, and Winston may have miscalculated in taking the Deputy PM Role in the first half of this term.
    
    As things swing back to positives, ACT is probably better placed to benefit on the hustings because of this.
    
    Secondly, there is a trend worldwide against “Progressive” government. You only have to look at the SNP in Scotland.

    Bene, your commented regarding half hearted actions is very perceptive.
    
    Half assed plans like the new three strikes plan never work. They disillusion supporters and give detractors ammunition. It is a lose lose scenario.
    
    Additionally if I was Chris Luxon I would not be afraid to splash some cash in appropriate portfolios.
    
    As an example I would seriously consider offering frontline police officers overtime rates to work additional shifts. Get some additional police presence on the streets now. Dont just wait for additional police officers to train. Pass a special law (it could have a sunset clause) requiring mandatory jail time for ram raiding etc.

      Banning smoking based on a progressive age starting in the future will have no effect on the health of smokers before the policy kicks in, whatever the commentary favoured by the media and activists. Banning the use of dope has done wonders for the health of dopers. Yeah, right.

  There are now about 76 million beef and milk cows and calves.

      I’ve never seen a global number. To make sense, this argument would need to compare ruminants numbers in pre-oil times with now. I suspect a lot of displacement – domesticated cows instead of zebra or bison, for example.
      
      But ruminants are part of the natural ecosystem. And even the people who wrote things like the Paris Agreement recognised the need for food.
      
      I think we could save the climate if all the people who don’t just stopped eating.

        In NZ, most of dairy farms are on former wetlands. Wetlands are significant natural sources of methane. A proper comparison of the effect of dairy cattle with respect to methane therefore needs to compare them to the complete natural baseline, rather than to a hypothetical state with no cattle but the same landuse.

    Methane degrades to CO₂; unless the number of animals is increasing, then methane won’t accumulate. Put another way, the warming effect from NZ’s CH₄ emissions from animals has already happened. This is why putting agriculture into the ETS really can’t do anything to help the climate.

  The TV1 poll and subsequent prognostications are cannot be taken seriously at this stage in the electoral cycle. What is more important will be the Coalition’ first budget to be presented in a few weeks, and the public response. The case could be made for a ‘Nordmeyer Black Budget’ in view of the parlous state of the country’s finances but the voters have become used to a Robertson ‘money tree lolly scramble’ – winding back expectations is a real challenge.

Watching TVNZ Six o’clock news last night .
There was a woman ranting and raving about a recent poll that spent a disaster for the present Democratically Elected NZ Government .
I could only think to make such a raving out of control stance and doomsday comments on a NZ Taxpayer funded Television Station on her employer any which way without fear of consequences makes one wonder why, when she got employed how many others in TVNZ have the same mentality of an IQ of a Turnip.
Worth Checking Out at least .Asking for so many many viewers who switched off last nights anti Government rant masquerading as “NEWS”.

    Owned by the State, therefore share funds come from the State (Taxpayers). It appears that they don’t hold any bank loans which is unusual for an entity of this size.
    
    So, clearly, this is a ‘taxpayer-funded’ entity. That made a -$8.8m loss last year after revaluing their land/buildings. Take away the taxpayer funds and this thing folds immediately (as it should).

Waitangi Tribunal says Government’s change to Oranga Tamariki Act will create ‘actual harm’

Waitangi Tribunal resists a race based policy being removed. Because reasons.

Section 7AA …. ensured that Oranga Tamariki considered “the whakapapa (genealogy) of Māori children and . . . the whanaungatanga (familial) responsibilities of their whānau, hapū and iwi”, the Act reads.

The Waitangi Tribunal says it has seen no evidence of harm caused by the section facing repeal. However, the Tribunal has also not seen evidence that genealogy and familial responsibilities will no longer be an essential consideration of all decisions made by OT, regardless of ethnicity.

(Sounds like Oranga Tamariki will be keeping its name, not sure that sends a great message about New Zealand’s vulnerable children.)

  Let’s say a New Zealand child of Chinese ethnicity was orphaned. The child was fostered by a non Chinese couple. They eventually decide to adopt the child. Would the Chinese community in New Zealand go insane and use the courts to remove the child? Of course not. If the parents are competent they will easily find ways to connect the child with her Chinese culture.

    But there would be plenty of other ethnic groups that would object. If the rule is that children should be raised according to the standards of that ethnic group, then there can be different outcomes but based on the same overall rule.
    One classic example which comes up again and again, deals with the other end of life, death and burial customs. I have heard of several occasions where there has been a dispute between a pakeha widow and the relatives of the Māori deceased about how and where he should be buried, and the cousins just turn up and take the body against the wishes of the widow. I am pretty sure that is contrary to British common law where the physical remains are actually considered an asset of the estate and are “disposed of” by the executors of the estate.
    In every case I have heard of, even if they are asked to intervene, the police will do absolutely nothing to stop the relatives (who will be a large group of large men) from taking the body back to the ancestral marae.
    Messing around with long established customs about birth, marriage and death is exactly the right way to get major inter-ethnic strife.

It’s a power play and nothing more on the part of the Maori thugs. But I find it hard to believe. The deceased’s last will and testament (which presumably includes burial plans) would be extant and if no will then it goes to probate ie the widow.

Watching TV1 news last night they lead with a full 15 minutes on the latest 1 news poll. They announced it was a major shock wave to the govt!
In fact National is down 2% from the last poll in Feb, Act down 1, NZ First down 1.8. So NZ First out of parliament, they said, Labour and the greens back in power! Oh joy!

Surely one has to look at trends? In the last poll in Feb, National was holding steady and Chris Hipkins was down 10 as preferred prime minister?
Given the margin of error of the poll is 3% surely we have to see a trend before we can announce the latest poll as “earth shattering”?

One wonders why this govt keeps funding tvnz? Especially as they seem to be operating as an unofficial opposition? They interviewed 4 or 5 people in the street and none of those selected supported the govt. Tv1 news appear to have abandoned even the pretence of objectivity.

      I am fully aware of New Zealand on Air. It funds all eligible media, not just programmes on TVNZ.
      
      My objection is to describing TVNZ as a “taxpayer funded tv station”. The clear inference is that it is a public broadcaster. It is not. It is a commercial broadcaster. The reason that it is in trouble is because it is failing commercially.

        1. TVNZ in all its forms and guises was started(funded) by the NZ government. One could say taxpayer money.
        
        2. TVNZ Operates as a commercial entity with a Board appointed by the Government.
        
        3. It could be argued that the Government helps TVNZ financially by buying large amounts of advertising at full rate and other other fiscal levers.
        
        So the argument, is it taxpayer funded, is moot and dependent on a point of view.
        
        It is definitely controlled(via board appointments and shareholdings and agreements) by the Government, ergo the taxpayer.

        The taxpayer has a big role in funding given that the guarantee of Kiwibank deposits was transferred from NZ Post to the Crown on 30 November 2022. This is qualified:
        
        Deposits in Kiwibank which were in place on 28 February 2017 remain covered by the Crown guarantee until they are withdrawn, renewed or otherwise reduced or repaid. Any new deposits made after the guarantee termination date don’t have the benefit of the guarantee.
        
        Of ownership:
        
        – 79.3 per cent is owned by a State-owned Kiwi Group Capital Ltd.
        
        – the rest seems to be fairly widely held.
        
        Given that the NZ Government over a century more than once bailed out the BNZ, which is now Australian-owned, I doubt that it would let Kiwibank fail.

    You are right it is not funded in the manner of RNZ, but it is still funded in its capital structure by taxpayers.

• the right of Government to govern
• protect property rights
• re-assert democratic voting, rights and responsibilities

and add that
• New Zealand Government is secular

Couched in those terms, National should support such a bill as they otherwise – along with Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII and his unity movement – would need to explain why they oppose the three ACT points, and hopefully the fourth (individuals can practice religion, but not Governments, especially when that lifts one minority ethnic view above all others)

  Why do these Hui never address real and pressing issues impacting on Maori? ‘Attack something’ seems to be the reflex action, redolent of the ‘war party attacking neighbouring tribes’ mentality. ‘Attack the colonist government’ is the mindset they lock into with all possible relish and vigour, and we can expect impassioned haka with all the usual tongue poking and eye-rolling, and the standard loud inflammatory rhetoric as well.
  The real and pressing issues that should instead be addressed are:
  – Reducing Maori infanticide rates.
  – Reducing the Maori prison population.
  – How to instil respect for law and order.
  – The supreme value of mahi and mana.
  The Maori mindset is all about fighting and aggressive posturing. This is the problem. There should be a place for sober discussion and self awareness, a reflection on the sorry state Maoridom finds itself in. Crime should be strongly repudiated by tribal leaders. Difficult conversations should be had regarding ‘by Maori, for Maori’ solutions to the shocking statistics and appalling offending. Maori are too proud / obstinate / lacking in self awareness to do what is needed unfortunately; the leadership are driven by venality and hate rather than pure and sensible thinking.

I am compiling a list of their advertisers and intend to write to them expressing my annoyance and informing them I will be boycotting their products. I will aim to publicise that list in the next couple of weeks so others can do the same. I am a great believer in fighting fire with fire.

Once the ads took a lot of scrolling through and my wife used to comment ‘how do people sit through all that stuff?’.     Frankly it’s surprising there are not more issues when people are walking 6-12 dogs at a time. Those dogs all get to know each other and if a stranger dog comes along and causes strife you better believe they will respond as a pack.
    Nobody can break up the fight if it involves th at many dogs and will get injured just getting amongst it.

Seems we already have the appropriate regulations. The person responsible for the dogs at the time of the attack needs to be held responsible under them. The business probably needs investigating too and should be able to be sued as its activities have caused loss and damage to bystanders.

Preferably with something stronger than a wet bus ticket.

Well, Ireland, perhaps you could send a nice little message to Māori asking them to please behave and stop committing crimes

Senior minister Paul Goldsmith has fronted up to the United Nations in Geneva to explain how New Zealand is protecting human rights.

“Ireland regrets that the Māori people, including women and young people, continue to be disproportionately affected by incarceration,” said Ireland’s representative.

  Ireland was supposed to be the shining human rights citadel on the hill, rising above nasty, racist and xenophobic Brexit Britain – or so the country’s liberal elite loved telling the world.

  And in Norway, the Saami of Lapland (which extends to Sweden and Russia), are indigenous people with a non-written history, their own language, and a culture that interests tourists. Sound familiar?
  
  Wokies from the UN visited Norwegian Saami last month.
  
  The UN picks easy targets such as New Zealand and Norway. Not Chinese treatment of the Uyghurs and Tibetans, nor Vietnamese treatment of the Montagnard Christians.
