Oh dear, Wellington mayor Tory Whanau on the front page again, and (again) not in a good way.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau has missed half of Wellington International Airport’s board meetings in the past year, due to clashes with other meetings. Who would have thought that not turning up when there is potentially $278mill on the table under her watch is in the slightest bit sensible.

I guess ratepayers will look at the meetings Ms Whanau did attend instead and make their own assessment. Like the audit and risk committee meeting. Seriously?

    I believe she got in because of STV voting and she only got in after the bottom half of candidates were eliminated. Preferential voting, the problem is, voters think they need to rank all candidates, but ONLY NEED TO RANK THE ONES YOU WANT, not all them

  The audit and risk committee may sound silly to you but yes, the mayor should be aware of issues arising from independent review of Council (audit) and of risks the city is facing. Thinking about potential issues before hand and making plans to manage them is much better than not having a clue.
  
  But I doubt those Committee meet much more than monthly, so my question would be, why isn’t the scheduling better? I know there will be many people to co-ordinate, but the Mayor being able to attend is important.

      As mayor of a capital city, Ms Whanau will have staff organising her official diary and alerting her to meeting and event scheduling daily.
      They will probably be informing her (in a gentle and respectful manner) which meetings and events should take priority for her attendance.
      This happens even in small town Councils.
      Ms Whanau will be picking and choosing which meetings she wants to attend, ignoring the others and blaming “scheduling”.

  She is probably only there to collect the Directors fees which are generally not dependent on meeting attendance. If she cannot discharge her duties as a director properly she should not be on the Board.
  By the way, wonder if the lease of the new Council accommodation allows dogs in the Mayoral suite.

  The Company constitution will be interesting. Most say if you miss 3 meetings in a year without written permission from the Chair, you will be retired.
  
  Its important. Boards are governance teams, they have to work together, and to decide together to ensure that the company is successful.
  
  Being “too important” to bother turning up simply, once again demonstrates that Whanau is lazy and simply not up to the job.
  
  Bloody embarassing, but fortunately it confirms that the Airport is simply not important to Council. Sell the shares, let people who want to run a successful airport own it.

  Not every person who experiences exhaustion, hormonal upheaval, depression or even psychosis decides the solution is to kill their child.
  So yes I believe a conviction was appropriate in this case.
  I note a recent case of animal neglect by a sharefarmer in Northland, where all parties concerned decided to leave farming, and all directions by authorities were followed, resulted in convictions being entered for the farm owners for failing to monitor their experienced sharefarmer closely enough.

  How extremely fortunate there no shortage of electricity generation in NZ, and power is getting ever cheaper.
  Government is having to decide whether to reduce carbon units available as a result or let the price of units fall, which would unfortunately lower prices for consumers.

    This is a bit like the problem known to many an office manager. If the staff know that the result of their being efficient and finding ways to save costs, will be that next year their budget is cut – they will be disincentivised to look for savings and instead make sure that they spend every last penny or even a bit more.
    
    In the case of the carbon units, the Government should stick to previously scheduled levels, and environmental groups should take advantage of any price reductions to buy and promptly shred as many units as they can. No other use of money will get more emissions reduction per dollar.

  This is no different to experiences with cattle in Africa.
  
  Running cattle helps improve the land, improving the soil, improving the plant life etc etc. This is supposed to be a good thing for CO2 because the soil improvement means the soil is picking up, and trapping, carbon.
  
  But there’s the whole methane angle that is being ignored here.
  
  Cattle and bison do not make methane. Is is the bacteria in their gut that does that. Essentially, mammals (as well as many other animals) are just a compost heaps surrounded by a tube of meat. That includes you.
  
  The number of bacteria cells in your body vastly outnumbers the number of human cells. Same for any mammal.
  
  When you eat, the bacteria are really doing the food processing and your stomach lining (ie. the meat tube) just absorbs some of the resulting nutrients.
  
  The biological processes of those bacteria are much the same whether they are in a cow, a bison, you, your back yard compost heap or the leaf litter on the forest floor.
  
  There really is nothing magic about bison.

      It is the bacteria in the animals that make the methane.

      BY, methane production depends on diet, the make up of gut microbes, and feed consumption.
      A very high producing dairy cow will eat more than a beef animal on the same diet and conceivably produce more methane, on the other hand it’s producing food.

Over the last year we have lost 70,000 – mostly our finest – and gained 20,000 – mostly potential Uber drivers.

Productive people are a small % of the work force and for each of them another 5 to 10 people depend on them to make low skilled jobs, pay the benefit, prop up ACC etc.

So, effectively we’ve lost something like the productivity of the whole of a city the size of Christchurch.

There was some hope amongst the talking heads that people would wait to see what the new government would change to slow down this flight. I think that is not much of a hope:
* The salary differentials with Australia are huge. For government jobs, there is no way the government is going to come anywhere near matching the differential. The haggling over the police pay is in the 5% region – not the 30 to 50% region.
* The government has had 6 months and has not been making the right noises. We’re not looking for tiny tweaks, we need radical changes.

One of the biggest factors in the private sector is the continuing encroachment of Aotearoa.

We need foreign investment and local investors prepared to make long term investments in businesses, factories etc. What are we doing to make NZ attractive to them? Nothing.

Instead we’ve seen increasing hostility against business. With a sinking education system and rising crime the productive workforce is leaving and the potential investors realise there skill base is shrinking. Therefore we end up in a death spiral.

The most basic thing that the government can do is nip the Aotearoa nonsense in the bud. It is fine for a bit of cultural flavour in the tourist industry but not for everything else.

We cannot use Maori science and such to drive businesses and run factories. We’re competing in the 2020s, not the stone age.

This insanity must stop or we’ll soon be in PNG territory.

It is easy to dismiss white voices as “racist’. 90%+ of Maori also know what side our bread is buttered on. They need to speak up.

Let’s acknowledge Maoridom/Maori values as a cultural value. Like Morris dancing etc. But let’s not use if for something it is entirely unsuited to.

  CMM ,people who don’t think there’s an inbuilt bias towards all Māori outcomes should ask themselves if it would be acceptable for the coalition government to insist on a 20% cut in the Waitangi Tribunal staff numbers ,of course it would be acceptable but everyone with a pulse knows it’s not going to happen, ever, sounds fair aye ?

    But the Waitangi Tribunal is an advisory Board for Treaty Settlements only and not a Government Department, so sweet fa to do with Government except who pays them all, particularly their many Consultants and Lawyers.
    Needs to be paired down to its real role, and stop trying to be an Over Government Role – which it is not and never will be.

    The Treaty stuff keeps us stuck in a time warp. If anything, things have gone backwards in the 32 years I have lived here.
    
    There’s the ongoing threat of nationalisation and loss of property rights. Why would anyone want to invest in NZ?
    
    Building factories or businesses is a long term deal. You don’t worry about National or Labour. You look at the whole long term picture, including:
    * Is this place attractive to high value staff I need for my business? Will they want to live here? Will issues like crime scare them away? What about education for their children?
    * Is the infrastructure (roads, harbours, freight services,…) improving/getting worse? Will it support or be detrimental to my business in 10 years? 20 years?
    
    NZ is already on the back foot due to being a long way from large markets. Let’s not make it worse with crappy government decisions, red tape and such.

  That 70,000 is the tip of the iceberg, sorry to say.
  
  Our extended family held council on this last year. Several of us have lived and worked overseas in the past.
  We concluded:
  There are early mover advantages – if the trickle becomes a flood eventually the Government will take steps to stem capital flight.
  There are six “triggers” we agreed would put us into go mode. 1. Any move to tax unrealised capital gains. 2. Any further erosion of the principles of property ownership. It is terrifying to us that a)some unelected group can suddenly decide they get to have a say over what we may or may not do with our property and b) the government of the day backs them 3.   There are business owners, employers and senior managers in the family. Individually we were all watching the economy and making our own assessments. The eldest just want to be left alone and not cultivated like an ATM. The folk with younger children look at the opportunities and, frankly, I think its down to a question of timing, not if.
  We sold a nice house in Melbourne and moved to Christchurch to be closer to the family 18 years ago. So far, that single decision has cost us A$1,500,000 in tax free capital gains. Thats right. Ive torn up $100,000 cash Aussie every year for the privilege of living in NZ. Im not bitching about that, it was our decision to make that move, no one forced us. But, as a family, if that trend looks to continue for another twenty years you are being almost irresponsible by ignoring it. Thats the real cost of the appalling productivity in this country.

    That 70,000 is just a small slice in time. What is far more alarming is the long term trend.
    
    We only have around 200 to 300k net taxpayers in NZ (a reasonable proxy for the productive people). If we lose 20k of these overseas every year and 20k are retiring then in 5 years time we have a crater.
    
    Well over 70% of new graduates in useful fields (engineering, nursing, …) are leaving NZ for better opportunities elsewhere. That number is likely to grow.
    
    The government has limited levers to pull, but it needs to pull them. The most important one is to stop this Maori/Aotearoa bullshit from eroding NZ faster than is needed.

      – my next oldest grand-daughter & her partner are moving to Queensland next month – both uni grads – she medical science, he B.com.
      -my next oldest grand-daughter has lived in Brisbane for the past 2 years – now living in Canada with her partner.
      That leaves 3 grand-daughters & 1 grandson still here in NZ, all currently at university.
      My 2nd son – a high end building contractor – is making plans to move to Queensland within the next 2 – 3 years.
      I hope there are enough of them around in the next few years to bury me – I’m probably past my use-by date now. 🙂

        My only Granddaughter is staying in Wellington. She comes from both parents with senior jobs in the Public Service.
        She has a very good job which moves her around in a team role quite a lot as I understand.
        She was Privately Educated and has three good Auckland Uni Degrees. Like her mother has the gift of languages, and has skills in English, French, German, Mandarin and of course Maori.
        She works hard, and is staying, and acts like a traditional Public Servant, ie with discretion.
        There are some more around too, but do not seek any limelight.

        Don, you need to look at this in terms of their needs – not yours – ie. make sure you’re not holding them back for your needs/wants.
        
        Those in Australia are close enough to come visit at a drop of a hat.
        
        I look at my family. My brother and I both left South Africa. My sister did too. But then my sister went back to SA because of our aging parents (and her husband’s). They ended up living the next 25 years in South Africa – raising both there kids there – just to be close to the oldies.
        
        They are now both in their late 50s and are now stuck there. Their kids have had a crappy South African education.
        
        I think it is very unfair to put any expectations on children to compromise their futures for their parents.
        
        We have been very clear to our kids – do what you need for your life. Don’t feel obligated to look after us.

Shit – I did it myself back in 1979 – moved to Oz with my 3 infant children for 10 years. I have Aussie relatives, so it was easy to do, & had a very enjoyable – and profitable time. But the tug-on-heart strings pulled us back home in 1988, and no regrets.
        
        I’ve told my son that if he moves, I’ll come with him & be his gardener, and my wife can be their housemaid. 😆

      We are sort of looking at it as a four part problem.
      
      First is domicile – where is the least awful place to live? Votes for the States and Aus.
      Opportunities for the munchkins? Once uni educated Aus is an easy choice – the sheer scale makes it compelling. Even for the less academically gifted a 22 YO can make $125k in Y1 truck driving in WA. Performance and retention bonuses take that to ~$175k (Skippy) by year three. If you dont piss it all away, 5 years moderately hard and boring graft sets you up pretty well. You just cant do that here.
      Capital protection? The accountant in the family is a fan of risk weighted portfolios. Interestingly, the safest places to park your wealth seem to be the places where its hardest for governments to get their hands on it +1 for Aus and US and some other hidey holes.
      Lifestyle. There are places in SE Asia, the Caribbean, the pacific where you may have problems owning property as a non citizen but where you can live for a year for the cost of living in NZ for 3-6 months as a semi retired person. So long as you set yourself up such that you can get to a hospital quickly and have things to do, there are plenty of choices.
      Personally, I like southern Portugal. Its westernised, very close to Europe, politically stable, great climate 10 months of the year. Others feel too old to learn a new language.
      
      As you say, Aus is the easiest choice. Wifey and I are both Aussie citizens. Yes, its not perfect. We can just about make it work as self-funded retirees with a unit in Melbourne and a house say in Hervey Bay for the winters.

  There is no benefit in making noise about this now.
  
  The charter schools will have some strong points and some weak points. Not all of them will perform exceptionally well. At least one or two will have some teething issues.
  
  In 2 years time Labour can cherry pick the data and focus on the one or two charter schools with the worst performance and use those to slur the whole charter school system.
  
  So no point in sounding off now.

      It is not so simple. Trans activists have infiltrated what was once the “gay and lesbian community”. For example, in the UK and Australia, you see meeting groups for lesbians being forced to admit men who identify as women, in some cases with the courts forcing them to do so.

A survey by recruiters Robert Half found 70 percent of employers reported increased productivity over the past year, compared to only 36 percent of staff who felt the same.

Struggling to get a handle on those numbers. Assuming bosses are looking across their organisations (70%), but staff are looking at themselves and their teams (36%) there is a big difference. Why?

    North Shore Hospital was like that yesterday. I went to a clinic there for my rotor cuff.
    That racket in the waiting romm was crazy. People coming and going, all sorts of injuries, surgeries. But the employees pushing the wheelchairs/beds were giggling like schoolgirl – making a hell of a lot of noise. I was trying to read my book but gave up.
    
    So anyway, this productivity increase is simple for the employer, just look at the bank account. It is all there.

    Count the number of people who sing the morning waiata.
    
    Is NZ really lowest in the OECD in productivity? I wouldn’t be surprised. I expect that number will go down as we continue to lose skilled people.
    
    I know it is second lowest in terms of retaining skilled people (only Ireland is lower).

        As we lose our most productive people we can only expect that productivity to fall more rapidly.
        
        The policies we have in NZ are insane. They favour the unskilled and push away the skilled.
        
        At no time in history has it been easier for skilled people to pull up sticks and move elsewhere. Even those that don’t physically move can still effectively move.
        
        For example, I have been living and working in NZ since 1992 – so 32 years. Only about a year of that has been for NZ companies. The rest has been for overseas interests. I might live here, spend here and pay tax here, but my skill is not being delivered into the NZ economy.

  I know the value of a doctor with little experience. Now I want to know the cost of a doctor with little experience.

    There is always some subsidizing of inexperienced people by experienced people.
    
    It probably takes a junior doctor a good two or three years before they are highly productive. In the first 6 months or so they are likely more hassle than they are worth, but that that’s part of the investment we make as a society.
    
    The same happens in my field – dealing mainly with programmers. The highest performers might have 5x the performance of the average programmers, but they only get 1.5x the pay. The rest is going into subsidising the lower performers.
    
    Junior programmers are generally not productive until they’ve been around for 6 to 12 months.

  Hen – From a good source I hear that the ED runs far better when the SMO’s run the hospital – in-patients get discharged from the hospital quicker so beds get freed up, they get to surgery sooner, decisions are made quicker, etc. so there is no back up in the ED.

      The problem is that the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act 2022 treats gender identity as the same as sexual orientation. It is an offence to:
      
      “encouraging an individual to believe that their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression needs changing because it is a defect or disorder”

      No, they were mostly going anyway but this makes it a bit more appealing to do so. If they were not going to Australia then they’d have gone elsewhere.
      
      Those NZers can still vote in NZ elections and that is what she was really after.
      
      Losing people to Australia is not the problem. It is losing them to anywhere. Australia is just a bit more easy to move to because it is closer for visiting the old folk and has a very similar culture – so less adaptation.

        New Zealanders do not need a visa to go and live and work in Australia whereas most other countries do have such a requirement. I would not be surprised if that situation changes in the not too distant future as they grapple with high numbers of immigrants and the associated problems of unemployment and housing shortage etc.

      About 3 years ago my brother in Oz rang me about getting NZ Citizenship. He is not an Australian Citizen and has been there way over 40 years. He is 68 now. Just kept renewing his NZ Passport. I dunno how he ever got away with it. Never voted and he is a sniveling socialist! As cmm said above, my brother would have still been able to have a NZ vote but he never did since leaving NZ. All the political crap he spoke, and he never voted! Fuck, what a leftie!

        Flossie – I’ve lived in the UK for over 21 years. Have dual citizenship. You can be on the electoral role but the rule was you were only supposedly allowed to vote in NZ elections if you had set foot in NZ within the previous 3 years (I say “supposedly” because you weren’t required to prove it and I doubt they could enforce it). I believe it was recently extended to 5 or 6.

  The Ozzie’s were clever and realised the value of a clear, easy citizenship path for skilled taxpaying workers and changed the rules to suit. The morons in government at the time said this is great, despite anyone with a braincell pointing out this was to the detriment of NZ. Fast forward a couple of years, and lo and behold, that is exactly what happend.

East coast iwi Ngāti Kahungunu will host the next national hui to mobilise iwi Māori and continue the kotahitanga (unity) kaupapa in protest at the coalition Government’s actions.
The kotahitanga movement started on January 20 when an estimated 10,000 Māori and non-Māori from around Aotearoa descended on Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngāruawāhia, heeding the call of the Māori King, Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII.
The kaupapa continued at Rātana just four days later, attracting about 7000 people, followed up by a massive turnout of around 60,000 to 80,000 at Waitangi for Waitangi Day commemorations in February.

Public Service cuts are not so simple: Kapi-Mana News.
Victoria University professor of public policy Arthur Grimes said the sector had grown “hugely” during the past six years and the cuts being proposed – even 1000 a day as happened on Wednesday – were smallish relative to how much it had grown.
However, …requiring all departments to cut spending by about 7% could create situations where the cuts were not appropriate.
He said…a lot of growth in jobs “at the top end” and many in those roles were paid a lot of money.
Most…would not get roles elsewhere at remotely those rates.
There needs to be huge emphasis on cutting back those ‘tier two’ and ‘tier three’ jobs.
Grimes said…also problems created because people were hired in specialised departments who did not have specialised knowledge.

An article that should have been published when the cuts were first discussed.
But then the public would have had a better understanding of the situation and we wouldn’t want that.

Maybe stuff has got the bull by the tits again, but on the face of this it makes no sense.

A woman’s car was stolen. The cops then towed it to to do their forensic analysis and she ends up having to pay $200 for the forensic tow.

Should she also have to pay for the other forensic costs like the fingerprint powder and DNA swabs?

Surely all the expenses associated with the police work should be covered by the taxpayer – including towing?

If the public are responsible for the towing then they should be able to shop around or get a buddy to tow it. Of course, from a policing perspective that would destroy evidence and would not work.

[Sidenote: stupid woman leaving the car running etc, but that is beside the point.]

  ““Police paid for this [the tow to the depot], as is usual where forensic tow is required. Once the examination was complete, the victim was advised that her vehicle was ready to be collected.”
  
  The car cannot be driven. The woman is being sked to pay $200 to have her car towed AWAY from the storage facility.
  
  Normally insurance would pick up all such costs. If the car was insured, now that the police work is done, it is normal for the insurance company to tow the car to their own facility. They will then do their own assessment as to whether to repair or write the vehicle off.
  
  Reading between the lines the car is not insured. In that case, if the car is so damaged that it cannot be driven, the $200 towing fee is the least of her problems. On the other hand if it is insured she has no problems. Why is she going to the media?

It’s General Debate so I can put it here.
Once upon a time West Coast whitebait was considered to be New Zealand’s silver.
I just got an email from a supermarket which advertised 250 grammes of frozen West Coast whitebait for $59.99.
So I looked further and found that a troy ounce (31.1024768 grammes) of silver can be bought for $5.74.
So 250 grammes of silver would cost only $46.14.
Next time somebody offers you whitebait fritters go for it!!!

  Looking it up: spot price of silver is around US$30 per oz or USD 95c per gram. That is $NZ1.55 per gram.250g of silver would be around $387.50
