Mike Hosking marks the the Waitangi Tribunal yesterday. The Waitangi Tribunal: 4/10 Why don’t they just write the one report? Just say “we hate national”, “we hate everything they are doing”, “everything they are doing is racist” and just hand a new copy out every time someone whinges?

Looking like recent applications are driven by politically motivated activists or folk who see their lucrative income stream draining away. They are not necessarily two different groups. The sets in the Venn diagram could show a telling story.

        So why does it now have 20, and will it continue expanding & at what cost to the taxpayer? If it’s ‘inquiries’ are non-binding, why have them?
        Let’s be honest: from the Waitangi Tribunal’s viewpoint, the government cannot pick its nose without consulting Maori. If Maori veto what the government is doing, clearly it is the Tribunal’s view that the government must stop doing it.
        That is not a functioning democracy. That is – to all intents and purposes – rule of this country by Maori. There is no other way of looking at it.
        I want to live in a functioning democracy. Most other sane and productive people do as well. Racial separatism and a power struggle over who is running the country will have more people selling up and going overseas. They will be working people that this country needs. If the Left and racial separatists are so determined to have this country & ‘the powers that be’ are happy for this to happen, then everyone has their breaking point as to what they can tolerate.

    I decided it was a scam when they ruled that the Government had denied Maori access to the covid vaccine when the evidence showed the exact opposite. Stupidly the government handed over vast amounts of money to Maori organisations to ‘help Maori get vaccinated’. What happened to the money?
    
    Many Maori did not want to be vaccinated. As was their right. It was as simple as that.

        I was talking to a Maori guy the other day who is now a hard working tradie. We ended up talking about settlements to iwi and what they do with it. His opinion was that it goes on flash cars etc and nothing trickles down. He had been stiffed by his iwi who promised him and colleagues study and work after they completed it, then pulled the plug out leaving them in debt.

        Maori and Labour are in symbiosis. Labour delivers to Maori everything Maori desire in return for support, and Maori deliver to Labour their support in return for everything they desire. It’s a feedback loop. Maori can yank Labours chain and keep it in line by transferring electorate votes to TPM, and when Labour ‘delivers for Maori’ the votes can be transferred back.

      Needless to say many of the recipients of the money didn’t have the skills or experience to run a vaccination program. Storage of the vaccine was a particular issue and thousands probably received vaccines that were stored improperly and ineffective. It should have been a major scandal but of course that would have been racist.

      The Treaty was a document that set out the land ownership details.
      It further stated that the government/crown would by responsible for running the country.
      The Waitangi Tribunal, as has been stated here many times, was to define tribal ownership of land for government recompense in cases of dispute.

  It would seem that the Palmer Government is to blame when it set out Section 5 and 6 of the Waitangi Act.
  Functions of the Tribunal which are as wide as the Pacific ocean or wider.
  
  Basically anybody can lay a claim about anything and the Tribunal is obliged to investigate and report.

  The saving grace is the Government is not obliged to act on any said reports.
  
  The current Governmnet could agree not to replace current tribunal members when their term expires. Legally they only need 3 members, currently it is at the maximum 20.
  
  The coalition wants cost savings. There will be a costly infrastructure supporting 20 members. I wonder what the cost reduction would be supporting 3?

    Just to remind debaters that legislation has been passed to the effect that ; Any Crown owned land must be offered to Māori interests prior to sale.
    Cherry picking yes, can even quote instances where this option was declined.
    Really does nor matter much ,private property rights have largely been destroyed by successive Governments regulation fest —- think RMA etc.

In Iceland they’re experimenting with drilling into volcanic magma chambers in search of geothermal energy. Being super-hot, the power output is phenomenal. While the tech is not yet ready, could be it’s a way forward for NZ.

Auckland, you could lead the country! What could possibly go wrong? Apart from the koha, of course.

  In theory you could do this anywhere in the world. If I was investing my own money I’d bet on this long before fusion. It’s an area that really deserves to have a few hundred billion thrown at it. If the climate change nutters actually wanted to decarbonise energy they would be all over this.

  Iceland’s geothermal power production is conventional like NZ and they only have about a third of what we do.
  The drilling into the superheated rock is just a science fantasy on rocket fuel. Easy to get money if you put climate change in the label. They haven’t got material which can stand those conditions, drill rigs that can go that deep, and the fluid down there won’t be containable. One well that hit a shallower “cooler” resource was discharging superheat hydrochloric acid vapour until they managed to seal it.

  One of the answers Steve is that it is an activist media trying to embarrass Luxon over the fact he doesn’t know about every teenager who self mutilates in New Zealand. It was initially reported in a medical journal which is probably appropriate but has now been hijacked by the wider media.
  
  This is a personal tragedy developing for the family of this young person, leave it there for them to solve and not use it for the activist agenda or potentially to give others similar thoughts. Every time I think the media have reached rock bottom they prove me wrong.

    I suspect the incident and surgery occurred during the last Government…i.e. during the Andrew Little regime of restructuring the Health Service.

      Such matters used to be regarded as private, and. confidential to the sufferer, their family, and medical advisors.

        That’s an interesting observation, because there is also a lot of young men that feel they are hard done by, and want to become women.
        
        It would be illogical to suggest both women and men are discriminated against. I would suggest that only one of these groups is ACTUALLY discriminated against.
        
        My feeling is that Women are being manipulated by emotion, misinformation and social group think. There is zero benefit of transitioning from a woman to a man. My feeling is that men are not being manipulated but can see that women get preferential treatment in society, so LOGICALLY want to become women. I bet you a dime a dozen this will become apparent when looking at detransition rates. I can see a lot of FTM ladies regretting their decision when they realise the reality of being a man.

    For me, to fix any illness, physical or mental, the cause of the illness must be identified and addressed. Potentially the counselling and gender affirming care will feed the illness not alleviate it. Many of the gender confused are victims of poisoned minds. NZ should consider a camp on the Chathams.

    I saw an interview recently with some morbidly obese Hawaiian academic who described him as ” a syphilitic racist”. I have never seen any evidence that Cook had syphilis – although I’m sure some of his men did – and all the evidence points him to being the polar opposite of a racist, especially for a man of his time.
    
    For example, he recorded that Maori were the finest physical specimens of humanity he had ever encountered in his explorations…but also that they were “habitual thieves”. Is it racist to record how he found their behaviour? Not for this boy.

Polynesian sailors (whose names have not been preserved in a written history), Abel Tasman, and James Cook. Cook has the particular honour of fully circumnavigating and documenting the land of NZ.
      
      They were all pushing past the point of the known and bravely travelling a path uncharted. Something for those of Polynesian, Dutch and English origins to be inspired by. But also something for those of the human race to be inspired by.

The trans movement displays many of the characteristics of a cult. That is because ANY departure from the cult beliefs, and you are “hateful” or “transphobic”. Reasoned debate is not allowed.

You can’t ask “Why is there an explosion in numbers of teen girls wanting to be boys?” You need to chant “gender affirming care”. You can’t ask if amputating breasts and sterility might be a last resort rather than a first step when a girl says that she is a boy. You need to “affirm her”. To me, that sounds exactly like a religious chant.

Back to the conference today. It only runs for four hours. The speakers are mostly unknown. Without all the craziness, nobody would know it had happened. Instead, there will be protestors, TV cameras, police, politicians, all losing their minds.

  112 out of 120 of our politicians voted for the Conversion Therapy Practices Prohibition Act in 2022. The media and the activists like Lal told tales of the worst of conversion practices to justify the bill. But it has essentially meant that many reasonable and concerned people that would have been available to listen and talk with troubled teens have been scared off. In the meantime the promotion of Gender self-selection ideology has been amped up. At the extreme, Relationship Sexuality Education in schools is being run by trans activists, at the less extreme it is based on the anything goes model from Family Planning. I have directly observed the results of this with pre-pubescent 11year old girls and boys running around saying they are lesbian, bisexual, non-binary. No more real than them saying they want to be PM, Astronauts etc after a careers expo.
  
  If you actively confuse young people about their sexuality and scare off good people from being able to discuss this with them, is it a surprise that the gender identity revolution explodes?
  
  The big question now is will NZ politicians ever have the conviction or the courage to walk us back from this self-destructive position?

  About 45 years ago I did some permit drawings for friends of the family for a house on Māori land they were part owners of in the nearby Thames region
  Everything was fine until they took the documents to the council to apply for the permit and they were given a hard time to the point of nastiness
  It turned out that a lot of the land thereabouts was Māori land and back in the gold rush days miners applied for prospecting licenses and the land owners had no choice
  The miners were allowed to build temporary huts which were supposed to be demolished after they stopped prospecting, but over the years some huts were upgraded to permanent residences and were still there
  Then the owners, decades later, put their foot down and wanted their land back and the ‘temporary’ dwellings removed . . .
  I believe some of the people in the council may have been connected to these houses.
  The upshot was our friends, who had been unaware of this feud, wished they’d built somewhere else

The dreadful appeasement of the National Party towards Maori separatists is leading us nowhere good. John Key thought he could tame the Maori Party & instead we got UNDRIP, and the experience of the Maori Party being in government with hated-by-most-maori National Party then lead to a purge of anyone remotely sensible – and we have ended up with this insanely radicalised thing called ‘Te Pati Mati’. A ill thought out tactical ploy has become a total strategic disaster. Finlayson and his cronies have served us up on a platter to the separatists, and woke corporate manager Key has told woke corporate manager Luxon to muddle through with a mixture of a) bringing people like Potaka into the tent – where he can now hold National to ransom and b) playing ostrich about what is unfolding.
National have totally underestimated the radical nature of Maori separatism and the Maori leadership, and the strategy seems to be to continue to play ostrich and pray that it all blows over. This is cowardly. This is more of the same failed thinking that is only getting us deeper into the mire. Key betrayed us all, the Maori racial separatist electorates should have been axed when there was the opportunity to do it. Now the chance is gone, and we are faced with a scenario where the overhang Maori electorates will end up deciding elections. It is going to happen. The woke corporates will find out that country will go entirely to the dogs once a radical left separatist government of Labour / TPM / Greens gets their hands on power.

I seen Luxon on the TV asked about the WT and wanting to go too court over everything, he said they can do what they like, but we will be getting rid of three waters, the Māori health authority, and any seperatist services, he was pretty clear we were voted in on these issues and we won’t be halted, don’t know how people can ignore that yet say he wants to appease.

Classic mission creep.
The Waitangi Tribunal was set up to research and establish facts relating to land confiscation claims. The facts were laid before the tribe and government which then negotiated a compensation package.
Now…
1. It has unilaterally widened its scope to all things affecting Maori. Apparently, everything National does “disproportionately affects Maori”.
2. It has moved from a fact-finding body to a party to the negotiations.
3. It sees itself as the sole arbiter of the treaty interpretation.
4. It sees itself as a sort of Maori Supreme Court equal in status and authority to Parliament. This comes with power to subpoena and make binding “rulings”.
Oddly, it is a court where only one side puts its case.

I am sure it wanted veto power as proposed in the Australian “Voice” and the National election has canned (postponed?) its grand plan.

The solution is simple but politically impossible. Tie government funding to only land confiscation cases and let tribes fund the rest.

And then there is the possible difficulty, not only that whoever is talking only in te reo Māori, to some Government official, has the ability to express clearly and unequivocally what the detailed issue is, but that the Government agent has the same absolute fluency to received the advice or request with no fault in understanding –

like consider all the fucking trouble the understanding of ‘te kawanatanga katoa’ and a few other words have caused – for 184 years …

Simply, under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Local Government Act and other legislation, Councils are required to provide opportunities for Māori to contribute to decision-making processes, as well as other obligations. This is in recognition of Māori as tangata whenua (indigenous people) of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Crown’s partner in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Where is any Treaty between the Crown and non-Māori New Zealanders?

And as there really is no sense in which the Māori claim to be closer to the land (mountains, rivers or ocean) can be demonstrated, then their individualism is simply a genetic disposition of some physical features, and that their ancestors lived in this country first before other human lineages (which science traces back all to a single commonality) arrived as the Maori immigrants initially had done, so their supposed exceptionalism rests entirely on the kindergarten sand-pit argument that “they were here first”.

    The only thing you could get out of an oia wrt that is:
    * how many people went through the methamphetamine programs funded by the government and run by the mongrel mob
    * how many of those have been subsequently charged with a drug offence.
    
    With Q1, get the name of the program and specify it.
    With Q2 charged, not convicted.
    If they can’t tell you then there clearly was no oversight as to effectiveness.
    
    Once you start adding more than 2-3 questions it becomes a muddle and there are more opportunities for the armies of communications consultants to obfuscate, decline and delay. Better to submit multiple oia’s. Similar if the questions are on more than one specific topic.
    
    For example if you wanted to know what auditing or progress reporting was done back to the funding ministry, make that a separate oia to keep one specific to recidivism, and the other to how useless the Ministry was/is

        THE INSANITY AT THE HEART OF THE TRUMP TRIAL. Perhaps the weirdest, and by far the most unjust, thing about former President Donald Trump’s trial in New York is that we do not know precisely what crime Trump is charged with committing. We’re in the middle of the trial, with Trump facing a maximum of more than 100 years in prison, and we don’t even know what the charges are! It’s a surreal situation.
        
        Yes, we know that Trump is charged with falsifying business records of payments made to the porn actress Stormy Daniels in 2016 and 2017. But falsifying business records is a misdemeanor with a two-year statute of limitations, meaning prosecutors would be prohibited from charging Trump with that crime after 2019, which was five years ago. They obviously missed that deadline by a mile.
        We also know that New York law allows falsifying business records to be upgraded to a felony if the alleged falsification was done with “intent to defraud that includes an intent to commit another crime or to aid or conceal the commission thereof.” In that case, the statute of limitations extends to five years, which would have allowed prosecutors to charge Trump as late as 2022. Prosecutors missed that deadline, too.
        
        Trump was indicted in 2023. How did that happen? Because of COVID-19, when New York extended its statute of limitations by a year. That allowed prosecutors to slip the charges in right before the new, one-time-only, six-year extended statute of limitations expired.
        
        “What was the “intent to commit another crime or aid and conceal the commission thereof” that prosecutors used to raise falsification of business records from a misdemeanor to a felony? In nearly every case of alleged falsification of records that has been charged as a felony in New York, the defendant was charged with another crime — that is, prosecutors made it clear what the other crime was. I have driven these 6 berth campervans a couple of times. In calm fine weather you can safely do 100 kmh on a long straight. Rain slow to 80. Windy slow to 80, or slower for high winds. Strong cross wind it is like driving a ship.

But 139 kmh is insane. A gust of wind, a pothole, and it is all over. And this driver was from Hong Kong. 😳

    Not all Asian drivers. Our Thai friend who now lives in Alaska is a very confident driver. 5 foot nothing and she takes us from Anchorage City up to Flat Top Mountain – in a Dodge Ram! I was pleasantly surprised with her skill at handling.
    They don’y care about petrol. Up the onramp to the Freeway and she just floors it to 70mph.

        I am going to burst your bubble. There have been a few studies in the last decade to determine the incidence of serious road crashes by tourists. On a quick scan, they show that betwen 4 and 6 percent of fatal and serious crashes involve drivers on an overseas licence.

I see that the St John the Ambulance service, a great organisation, is still using its Maori name first in all things, when it is clear that donations have dropped si9gnificently since it became all things Maori.
My annual remain cancelled assuming that they expect the Taxpayer Government to fill in the lost donations and remain Maori designated.
Queen Victoria, in 1888, creating the patronage of Empire countries to St John (from the first medical helper St John of Jerusalem in about 888) would not be amused.

Why leave the Indian, Chinese, Samoan, Tongan, and everybody else out?       St John Ambulance NZ is formally part of an international charity with a colourful history.
      
      In NZ the charity is a loose network of charitable groups with “St John” in their title. Search at the Charities Register, and 20 pages of them pop up.
      
      Like many other great charitable organisations, St John Ambulance NZ seems to have been targeted by the Woke, apparently in this case by a forceful management faced by a weak, overly diverse “ownership” structure.
      
      The Woke at NZ St John have expressed themselves by imposing a cloak of Maori language on the service.
      
      Ghost is right that St John Ambulance has many dedicated, not-overpaid employees plus volunteers. They do great work, and deserve our thanks.
      
      The Woke takeover, notable from the expensive repainting of vehicles in Maori language, is a bit of a betrayal of the many great St John staff and volunteers.

Well said. It does not matter if some of the signage is in Te reo for christ sake it’s an official language of New Zealand. I find all this angst about Te reo and Māori on this blog not only bewildering but also concerning. What should concern New Zealanders is that we own very little of what makes our country tick. Our banks, insurance companies, supermarkets, building suppliers are owned off shore. Now Frontera is selling off its brands possibly to the likes of Nestle so again we get screwed by offshore owners. Compare prices overseas. Yes I know the arguments small population etc etc We should be worried about this not f.. signage on an an ambulance. All this talk about the Māori elite ripping us all off what’s the Pakeha elite being doing for generations maybe Māori learnt from them.

  Sparrow – firstly, there’s no such thing as a “pakeha”, I believe you mean NZ European (and it’s European elites driving this crap, not a Maori). Secondly the top-down imposition (because that’s what it is, there’s nothing grassroots or organic about it) of Maori language on the country is an issue for several reasons. It’s incredibly patronising, disruptive and detracts from genuine issues facing Maori (ie employment prospects). Far easier to condescending superimpose some Maori words over something that’s clearly European-built than to develop education and industry that will provide jobs for people. It’s sloppy and makes NZ look stupid – genuinely bilingual countries (no, NZ is not one) communicate either in one language or another, not a mangled attempt at combining both. It’s dangerous because it compromises efficiency and obfuscates effective communication and cuts people off. It’s also being weaponised to promote a far left agenda. Overall making NZ weaker, dumber and severely pissing people in the process – not what any rational thinking person would call a recipe for progress.
