The Institute of Economic Research reports that 25% of new teachers failed NCEA Level 1 Maths, while no fewer than 58% failed Level 1 Science. This is cabbage level!

Lots of weasel words from IER’s Sarah Hogan during the post 7am interview about how hard it all was, and how better salaries would make things better. Laughably, she thereby implied that the current batch of teachers are rubbish – nice own goal, Sarah!

Not a single word in the report by Radio NZ about the gender split in the primary teaching profession. Imagine if a male dominated profession had the same proportion of ill qualified people. The caterwauling would be deafening!

  Graduates who are proficient in maths and science can find better jobs. It is probably true that better salaries are needed. But you could have specialist maths and science teachers in primary schools and only give them the higher salaries, not all teachers.

    The other barrier to recruiting science graduates is the curriculum which requires science teachers to incorporate ‘Maori Science’. Why would a serious scientist sign up for that?
    
    Also because the teacher unions behave like the former UK coal miners union, you can’t just pay the science teacher a premium. All teachers must be paid the same.

  Speaking of RNZ due to atmospheric conditions interfering with my preferred radio station in the car I pressed the auto tuner and found myself listening to RNZ Nine till Noon program for the first time in many many years. The hosts familiar voice soon introduced the hourly news bulletin which led with the Singapore airlines turbulence incident and platformed an “ expert “ who informed the listeners that the dramatic increase in such events was due to climate change! He also pointed out that we should all be very afraid because due to the increase in air travel these incidents would become more common place. What a genius so what is it more turbulence due to climate change or more people flying and therefore experiencing the normal amount of existing turbulence? How would you know the difference?
  News flash more ships at sea, more sailors experience storms must be climate change RUN FOR THE HILLS. I turned it off silence being less irritating, when are we going to stop funding this shite?

    Climate change supposedly warms the poles more than the equatorial regions resulting in a world with less extreme temperature variations overall. Since extreme weather is cause by temperature differences, all else being equal this should mean less severe weather. There is no reason to think that “climate change” should lead to more severe wind shear incidents. Quite the opposite actually.
    
    Many so called climate change “experts” these days have expertise in political activism and don’t understand anything about how the weather works.

And the people we pay (lets call them “teachers”) have a basic maths failure rate of 25% and a basic science failure rate of 58%.   As a father with children at school, I’m yet to see any justification for all the belly-aching from teachers about how overworked and underpaid they are. Most of them couldn’t work in an iron lung, and many of the ones I encounter are painfully stupid.

First Home Grants are not that big – $10k for new builds, $5k for existing. There are income limits up to $150k for a household, $90k for a single person. Anyone even halfway to those limits just needs to save hard for a bit longer to meet the grant amount. Doubt many ready to buy FHBs are lower income than that anyway.

I see housing support is under scrutiny. Wonder if the few remaining net taxpayers realise the big bucks involved, $5 billion odd a year for income related rent, Accommodation Supplement, other housing support, including paying rent arrears to stop tenants being turfed out.

  I commented on this yesterday. There is good evidence that in a tight market, these grants benefit sellers more than buyers. First home buyers are more likely to borrow as much as they can. So gifting them money just means that they can offer more for houses.

    The system didn’t work in an unrestricted way.
    
    There were strict limits on the maximum value of the house with different values according to area. In Auckland $875 K.
    
    Basically first home buyers could get the grant and also access their KiwiSaver (they probably can still do the latter).
    
    They could also have a 10% deposit, including the grant and the KiwiSaver access, instead of the usual 20% deposit. Only some banks offered this. The 10% deposit rule may still apply.
    
    In Auckland this usually meant the first home buyer were buying a new apartment or a small townhouse, with the purchasers having to find $87,500 deposit. For a couple they would have $20,000 First Homeowner grants (for a new home) and $20,000 KiwiSaver drawdown so they needed to save $47,500 (or get some of this from parents).
    
    Apparently 11,000 first home buyers accessed First Home grant in the last year, so a significant number.
    
    Will this impact sales of modest first homes, and will that echo up through the next band of house prices?
    
    It depends if the government cancels all aspects of first home incentives, being the Kiwisaver access and the 10% deposit, in addition to the now cancelled First Home grant.
    
    If the whole lot is binned, I think the effect will be very significant. It would mean all buyers would need 20% deposit, or at least $150,000.
    
    But I presume that only the First Home Grant is going.

      If there are less buyers in the market, and less taxpayer dollars going into the market, prices must surely fall further under the laws of supply and demand. Many are very opposed to falling house prices; I am not one if them. I feel for people who were vaulted onto the ladder through these sort of gimmicks & have ended up paying a price that has them a hostage of enormous debt with very little wiggle room in a souring economy. It was done to maintain the fiction that houses were still affordable, and to allow house flippers and retiring boomers to ‘cash out’ with huge gains.

    Lenders complain about the CCCFA being too onerous, apparently it is intrusive to find out what people are spending their money on. Stuff like holidays and the like, apparently it’s not important.
    And then inflation turns up, interest rates go up…and we hear that people are struggling to pay their mortgages. But hang on: the ‘stress testing’ is done with a significant buffer built in, and discretionary spending – according to the CCCFA critics – ‘doesn’t really matter’.
    Make it makes sense.
    Personally I think the property industry, mortgage brokers, retail banks have been desperate to ‘keep the party going’. No thought was really given to the real financial discipline and stability of prospective buyers.

  Trouble with first home buyers is they are lazy in 2024. They want everything given, and pay later with increased wages/salary. Also got to have that 63 inch smart TV, big double door fridge, super sound system, two cars etc.
  Think back 50+ years. How about getting a second and third job? What? No jobs available? Bullshit, they are there if you look. Too proud to sweep and vacuum offices at night? I did it. Working keeps you away from booze and recreational drugs!
  18 hours a day for 5 days, 12 hours Sat, 1/2 day on Sun. A young body can handle that when you have a goal.

      I was doing heavy boat haulage in the early hours, then steel fabrication in the workshop in the day, then cleaning in the evening/night. That was in a 4 story office building. We even had to clean down desks and wash the ashtrays!
      Zilch productivity my left tit. I was 22/24 years old. Young, small and fit.
      With the heavy boat haulage sometimes is meants a 2am start – depending on the tides.

        In the 1980’s I worked for a while in the deep sea fishing industry on the factory vessels. Deck crew were working 12 hours on and 6 hours off. Quite often they would fall asleep on the job. Most of them were in their 20’s.

        I too can recall occasions where I worked excessive hours. But I also call bullshit when I see it.
        
        No-one needs to work 12 hours day in, day out to get ahead. No one should need to, either.
        
        The kids today need to get it that life was never easy and never will be. But, the fact stays, hard work and dedication is what creates value for oneself and others.

        When I was that age I was over in London having fun, drinking gallons of beer.
        We didn’t ‘experiment with recreational drugs’; we were right into it!
        Went round Europe in a van for three months having fun.
        In other words did what thousands of other young Kiwis were doing and don’t regret a minute
        Came home. Still managed to buy a house on two salaries a couple of years later

    There is certainly some of that, but house prices are way higher than they were.
    
    When my peers went on OEs etc, they might have stayed in a squat in London for a few months and backpacked around Europe sometimes sleeping rough or in rat infested backpackers to save money.
    Now even the most “basic” backpackers is three or four star.
    
    That same expectation filters through into starter cars and starter houses: they expect airbags and double glazing etc.
    
    How many people are prepared to work a second job to save for a house? I worked 2 jobs for a year to save up – an extra 30 or so hours a week. We also went into savings mode: running a tight budget, skipping entertainment etc.
    
    If you’re spending all your time trying to “find yourself” and “be the authentic you” and treating yourself to things you “deserve” then don’t complain that you haven’t saved enough.
    
    Still, a cheap house in Christchurch is maybe $400-500k (cheapest 2 bedroom unit in Aranui is $375k). That’s 6 or 7x the average wage and $2500 per month on a 30 year mortgage.
    
    When we bought our first house in 2000 (a 10 acre lifestyle block + house) it cost $195k. My salary at the time was $70k, but $50k would have been close to average – so 4x salary.
    
    Yes, property prices are up, but:
    * People need to wind in their expectations & entitlement.
    * They need to be prepared to work harder and budget to save.

      It was all relevant. When I moved to the Shore and started working in steel fabrication, the hourly rate was $1.35. Believe it! Rate was more a few years later when we decided on the new house. When the house price was fixed and building started the house and section cost was $39,000. Now I am paying Rates on $1.4M. In that time I got divorced and bought out my ex wife. Paid 22% on a second mortgage. My first OE was in 2015 when we went to Hawaii and Alaska, true. I have never been to Oz, it’s full of Australians.

        Hawaii is a stepping stone, works out well. 3 days each time. We have not been to Maui but have been to the other 2.

      My salary was 64k in 2000. I bought my first house in NZ for 274k in early 2001. My mortgage was 180k.
      
      In 2008 my annual income was 102k. By 2016 I was mortgage free. In between I leveraged off my mortgage to pay for stuff.

    Yes, agree, SO. We both worked two jobs and never ate out, well, yes we did, 3 times a year on our birthdays and wedding anniversary. Were in our own house at the ages of 20 and 23. Never went clothes shopping, had a hand me down TV and sat on the floor for the first year because we had minimal furniture. I have no time at all for the whinging lazy arses of today.       Moved into my new house and slept on a mattress on the floor, the wooden floor, no carpet or vinyl. TV was also on the floor (one leg broke off so I removed the other 3) Thinking back it was hard, but fun, and I had MY house, not paying out to some other bastard.
      Clothe shopping? I have bee seen walking and window shoppin in my workshop overalls.
      As I have said above, the young ones of 2024 are lazy! 🙂

    Not really fair Steve. House prices are at a level where what is being asked is obscene. It is not the fault of young couples that someone else paid too much for their asset, or wants to cash out at 2020 prices and won’t budge. I know many young people who work very hard and have big dreams for their future. Rather than burying themselves in debt here, they will go to Australia as they should. They will earn more, inflation is lower, they will ‘get ahead’ in a wealthy country that exploits its abundant natural resources. Here’s the factors that have changed in the economy and country since 2020:
    
    – Inflation turned up in a big way, and is currently at 4.7%
    – The OCR increased from 0.25% to 5.5%
    – Government COVID stimulus wound down.
    – House consenting and construction boomed.
    – Thousands of people have lost or are losing their jobs, and we are in a recession.
    – Council rate increases are out of control.
    – Insurance increases are out of control.
    – There was a record net migration loss of 52,500 New Zealand citizens in the year ended March 2024.
    – Crime in New Zealand is seemingly out of control.
    – New Zealand is now being described as a ‘quasi-democracy’ where tribal elites seek to gain the power of veto over government decisions. Race relations are in the pits.
    – New Zealand’s infrastructure is crumbling after decades of under-investment.
    – The Left have a firm grip of most power structures in the country.

    In order for past governments to maintain the fiction that houses were still ‘affordable’ to buy for people who didn’t own a home, they had to use these gimmicks. A gift from the taxpayer + raid your KiwiSaver account + whatever savings you can scrape together. Many of these people will now be under severe financial pressure due to higher interest rates, inflation, council rates, and insurance costs. It is disgusting what happened, could never have been enabled without the retail banks massively increasing their lending.

  JAG admitted yesterday that she sometimes goes into “fight or flight” mode when she is faced with someone who has different views. She is going to get counselling to cope better AKA as anger management. These MPs are representative of a cohort of people on the left who become triggered if they are offended or “feel unsafe”.
  
  We have had MPs who successfully navigated wars, depressions, and natural disasters. Yet here we are today with MPs who lose their minds because they don’t get their own way on cycleways, or support services for asylum seekers.

    I think that it varies. People who are not fluent in English will revert to their native language when they become emotional. However IIRC there have been studies that people who are highly proficient in English as a second language are more likely to express emotions and “swear” in English. Except the French. 😂

    No, when expressing our views to an audience, we use swearwords that those we target get what we mean. We want to nail our opinions down!
    
    When I miss the nail and hit my thumb I use whatever expletive that comes to mind.
    
    When musing to ourselves, we revert back to our unintelligible expletives and are embarrassed when someone nearby understands our mutterings.

    I am English as a 1st language but I prefer to swear in my second language: Afrikaans.
    
    But then for me most of my Afrikaans was learned in the army, or amongst Cape Couloureds, which are both very swear environment. Every third word is “fok” or one of the girly-bit words – often prefixed with “jou ma se” (your mother’s).
    
    I don’t recall Afrikaners swearing much in English. And I never hear a Cape Coloured person swear in English.

I received an email request to participate in a survey about my interactions with a health provider. First question was would I like to complete it in English or Maori. I chose English so wondered why I then had to navigate around Aoteoroa, whanau, nga whatever etc etc.
If I had wanted the Maori option I would’ve said so at question 1!

  BTW .. had reason to complete a form to register with a new medical centre and GP. One of the questions asked what gender were you at birth, the next asked (optional) what gender do you identify as. You would think a medical centre would know that there is no such thing as gender at birth, only sex. Presumably if you could talk to the infant as it shot out of the vagina you might be able to then ask it what gender it considered themselves to be within human society.

  Individualised AI tutors are going to take over most teaching over next few years; GPT4 etc is already ‘smarter’ than most adults, far more creative, and in the case of STEM will have instant access to vastly more information, tools and problem sets to assist in teaching as well as being able to adapt specific teaching styles to students and track their progress with timely revision and ongoing assessment.
  
  Stupid teachers won’t be a problem anymore, and all students will benefit from the typically 2 sigma (2 standard deviations, eg an average student becomes top 3%) improvement that comes from personalized tutoring over classroom style teaching.

    Primary school is the most important IMO, as it builds the foundation for future learning.
    
    It’s even more important for students who are not the brightest and smartest (who can excel already regardless of the quality of the teachers), or students without capable parents who can tutor their kids.
    
    Capable and inspiring primary school teachers are essential for the less fortunate / privileged students and parents, crucial to breaking the low socioeconomic cycle.
    
    Maths and science are essential for developing critical thinking, which is sadly lacking nowadays…

But the MOE developed curriculum allows it as different ideologies can be used as a lens to critique subject matter in English and Media Studios that I know of- guess which one mentioned in the curriculum is used exclusively .

Who’s teaching your kids, and who’s teaching the teachers?

The Institute of Economic Research says the results of its study – which analysed the school qualifications of primary teachers who started work between 2017 and 2022 – are alarming.

It found a quarter attempted one or more NCEA level 1 maths standards, but did not get the 14 credits required for an endorsement, the benchmark required to “pass” a subject.

It said 58 percent fell short at level 1 science, while 14 percent of those studying level 1 English did not get 14 credits.

“In maths, an average of 25 percent of new teachers employed between 2017 and 2022 had failed to gain an Achieved level endorsement at Level 1. This means, on average, a quarter of all new primary school teachers who attempted could not pass at a basic level, the compulsory maths required of 15-year-olds in New Zealand,” the report said.

DOC are cutting more jobs…

Today we announced that following this consultation, DOC will have 124 fewer positions overall. We will disestablish 257 permanent positions and create 133. 114 of the disestablished positions are currently vacant.

257-114 is 143 ACTUAL people affected.

But having 143 fewer actual positions they’re going to create 133. So only 10 people actually affected.

Plus we don’t know the mix. Are they getting rid of managers and hiring rangers or the other way around?

But in any case what propaganda! All that noise and only 10 real jobs lost.

  You put on a uniform you are no longer a man or a woman, a father or a mother, a son or a daughter. You are a soldier.
  
  Israeli female soldiers have conducted themselves well, with many losing their lives. They are fine soldiers – with no qualifiers for being women.
  
  But torture, including unnecessarily harsh treatment, beating, rape etc, of any soldier, male or female, is unacceptable. Unfortunately all militaries in the past, and many in the present still practice torture.
  
  All sides in WW1, WW2, Vietnam and various recent conflicts in Africa have tortured.
  
  It will be interesting to see whether Hamas are at all honourable and treat these soldiers reasonably or whether they get raped and tortured.

Bloody hell. This has to stop. Now a boy stabbed

A teenage boy has died following a fight near Dunedin’s police station this afternoon.

The 16-year-old was on the ground being attended to by ambulance staff and police shortly after 3pm on Great King Street.

He was later transported to the hospital in a serious condition and died this evening, police confirmed in a statement shortly after 8pm.

A good mate has told me to keep an eye for news on how a government ministry has totally fucked over a small local council for $65m, and that half of our councils may be without insurance as a result. Every bit of litigation against all of these councils will now be an item on each ratepayers’ rates bill. Thanks Te Whatever.
