  It’s great news. Unfortunately Hamas had the hostages surrounded by women and children who were then sacrificed for the PR value. As usual the media will concentrate on those casualties rather than the people who kept them there to shield the hostages or provide the favourable media when they were killed. I don’t have a solution. Killing Shinwar would be mt highest priority.

      This rescue shows several things that help confirm the Israeli publicity.
      One, they do have some knowledge of where to find surviving hostages.
      Secondly, the fact that it proves what Israel has been saying about Hamas using refugee areas.
      Finally, that all Hamas combatants are using the Palestinian population as a shield.

  In describing the rescue, I liked the IDF’s reference of the bravery an heroism of the forces including that of the fallen Commander Zamora being compared to Judah Maccabee.
  
  Islamist extremists will invoke the history of their disgusting destructive battles to subjugate cities as a way to stir the evil intent within their “fighters”.

  This is fantastic news. Well done to the IDF teams, and sincere condolences to family and comrades of the IDF soldier killed during the raid, Commander Arnon Zamora.
  
  Teams had been planning and rehearsing the raid for weeks and their objective of returning the four hostages safely to Israel was met.

  CB, Donna Leva on ZB mentioned the hostage release but in her screechy voice emphasised lots of Palestinians were killed in the process. This of course is what Hamas wanted because many of the other hostages are now dead and by placing live ones in a refugee camp was their plan.

    It looks like lowest common denominator messaging to me. Using a phrase “expunge Maorification” can too easily be interpreted as racism.
    
    My views on the substantive issues should be known to regular readers so I will not repeat them.
    
    BTW complaining about down ticks and calling people cowards is not conducive to debate. Many folk here disagree enthusiastically with me, on two topics particularly. That is what debate is about. I don’t lose my mind when they downtick my comments. 😂

      I agree with you BY. This is not an echo chamber, like sone other blogs, nor do overzealous “moderators” remove anything outside the party line. Especially in General Debate, the debate should be the most important part.
      However, having said that, it would be good if at least the first downtickers gave reasons for their actions. They may well have important points not considered or which put a different interpretation of the original comment. Not just to indicate that they have read it and can’t be bothered putting forward a coherent argument.
      But what is more upsetting is people who often just paste a link, usually with no commentary and the link gives no clue as to what it is about. Those are the ones the moderators should come down hard on.

  Julian Batchelor is a brave man putting considerable personal resource into calling out the wrongful division of NZ by activists. He is the man in the arena. Here he is calling out PM Luxon to show some leadership or be transparent about where he stands. This is highly aligned with most KBers who want to see Luxon stand up a bit more bravely. For instance when Moana is asking him if Māori ceded Sovereignty he could state that yes they did but he avoids giving an answer.
  
  It is easy to be the critic of the man in the arena, but we must remember the warrior in the arena is the one actually doing something. While we might not always like his fighting style, what is important is that he is putting up a fight. Other kiwis that I include in this group are, Brian Tamaki and Bob Mcroskie. Not popular but working for the good of our country.

      Imalwaysright- I am happy we don’t have the labour/greens/tpm coalition of destruction in power. I respect Luxon as the PM of our country. That doesn’t mean he can’t be challenged to be stronger on some issues than he is currently.
      
      The National Party is not one group with homogeneous positions on everything. They have social liberals and conservatives in their group. Some with leanings towards ethnostate thinking. Like many on KB I am pleased that NZF and ACT are in the coalition pulling more strongly on the egalitarian values.

    Julian Batchelor is doing a great job of calling this Co-Governance out.
    Chris Luxon is still yet to answer the question about his views – he just refers to the views of others! If he doesn’t wake up, then he will have problems.
    I have followed Julian Batchelor and the Stop Co-Governance website basically since it started. I was at one of the earlier meetings at Orewa. What a disgusting display of activists uneducated about the Treaty. I knew something was not right.
    I must say that I had a small understanding of the Treaty, but now I know a bit, a lot.
    I do wish more people would get involved. Stop Co-Governance is not a group of protesters, they are a group who want the truth separated from the 50 years of lies.

Pricey business removing ink. One person interviewed for the below item had 6 sessions approved while in prison. The laser tech says a further 50 sessions are required at $450 per. That person with ink says he can’t afford it and anyway not his fault as he was only 27 when he got his first gang ink.

Maybe a loan would work, though probably best to drip feed it for a few sessions at a time.

Corrections Minister Mark Mitchell said he was a strong supporter of the programme for rehabilitation. It was funded earlier, 2001-2004, to the tune of $250,000. So it should not be too difficult to check work and criminal history to see how successful the rehab of those people has been and whether the $quarter mill was worth it. Good input to new funding decisions.

    The way I see it , they are walking billboards displaying the foibles of going the whole hog when joining gangs .
    It’s great they will suffer the indignity and ostracisation for life .

        I don’t particularly appreciate tattoos, but I might have differing reactions to a face tattooed with a dog picture and a face with a moko kauae.

        All tattoos are culturally significant to the wearer and have been obtained to make a statement. If they are publically displayed then that is a public statement. Generally they are aligning the wearer with a group while simultaneously saying look at me, I am special. Unlike a hairstyle, clothing, or jewellery they are permanent statements.
        
        While gang insignia are the ultimate display of F You All, unfortunately the push on Moko are not innocent outpourings of peoples passion for their Māori culture. They are tainted by association with an aggressive agenda to create a new power structure by activists. This usually comes with the ideology that they don’t believe they are under the sovereignty of the Crown, should have complete control over their own existence while this is paid for by other NZers. They believe that they are special and superior to other NZers and should have special and superior privileges. In many ways it is not that far removed from gang ethos.
        
        So if I have an inherent dislike of facial tattoo it is not because I have hatred for the wearer or their ethnicity. However, I do have a severe dislike of the aggression it portrays towards the rest of us that prefer to live in an egalitarian country rather than an ethnostate.

        However I can imagine many customer facing businesses refusing to employ anyone with a facial tatoo. For example if you ran an art gallery in Queenstown or even a restaurant, you would be foolish to do so. Most potential Japanese customers would walk.

  Why is the Net Taxpayer footing the bill of $450 a session? $22500 for one person who got his first MM Tattoo at 27. That is just one person.
  Whoever came up with the figure of $73000 for the Corrections Dept must have been using that roving decimal point again. $73K is nor enough for four people!

    SO – it sounds to me like the person doing the tattoo removes is capitalising on a very generous Taxpayer funded scheme. It seems to me it would be expensive at a third the cost.
    
    I say personal responsibility and pay your own way should be the basis for tattoo removal.

      Yes. It’s possible the MM has not only tattoo parlors but laser removal shops as well.
      
      Though the laser is probably expensive and the operator includes the price of it in their rate.
      
      Wonder what the cost per session would be if corrections bought one and paid an appropriate going rate to operate it.

  From what I have seen recently is the huge increase in the young women of Maori decent supporting a Moko.
  I always thought it was for the older mature tribal ladies, not the children telling everybody who they believe they are, and that they are now the superior race in New Zealand.
  In fact Maori have won the second Treaty of Waitangi over recent years, as we are subjected to every little thing in Maori, and we can expect it surreptitiously over time to continue.
  I see all schools are now, according to all, it appears a new road signs a Kura !

  I was contracted to do the initial evaluation of the programme in 2003.
  
  It was set up in 2001-02 with an $80,000 funding grant from the Salvation Army (this provided the removal machine and the resourcing of the removal).
  
  As with all programmes a pilot was set up to allow measurement of the effects.
  
  The programme was specifically targetted at prisoners within the youth prison system who had found that the existence of prison tattoos impacted their ability to get a job upon release. Its focus was purely as a reintegrative intervention rather than rehabilitative.
  
  There were a few simple rules at the start.
  
  Prisoners eligible were to be 17-19 years old. Prisoners had a release date no longer than 6 months away. Removal could be completed in no more than 5-10 sessions.
  
  Once it got within the Corrections systems things went pear-shaped. The first 2-3 months the rules were followed but very quickly they went out the window. It was almost immediately extended to a wider age group and the proximity of release requirement was ignored.
  
  Reviewing the programme there was evidence of prisoners with 10+ years to parole being added to the intervention and also a case where a patched gang member was released with the M-O-N of Mongrel removed.
  
  The intent of the programme was well-based but mismanagement by PPS (as Prisons was called at the time) meant the trial was eventually abandoned.

        It isn’t hypocrisy for the MP for Epsom to be opposed to Government funded activism to import social housing recipients into Epsom. Particularly when there are many of these people who are anti-social. Now if it was a free market development filling up with anti-social folk and he was opposing that then you could call out hypocrisy and I would agree.
        
        Personally I don’t have a problem with social housing being spread around the suburbs. But the real issue for the majority of social housing tenants and resident neighbours is that it is Anti-social housing. I am a big advocate for creating different classes of state housing. Anti-social housing should be in the back of beyond, built of robust, durable, cleanable materials eg public toilets.         Colville – sorry if I misunderstood, is Seymour opposing commercial developments? I was referring to KO activities. There are examples of multilevel KO developments in Parnell and Epsom where the tenants are creating massive amounts of issues to other locals.
        
        The issue I see with infill housing is just the complete lack of multi-agency planning eg planning for schools, stormwater/sewerage infrastructure and other community facilities. Allowing developers to push in lots of additional housing is fine but who is going to pay to provide all the additional wraparound requirements?

    The Fast track legislation does not address the issues raised by the RMA .There is an essential change for the built environment but not so for the natural environment!
    Farmers and other land users have had their ability to produce severely curtailed and the cost of using the land they have purchased has skyrocketed.
    In NZ ownership of land is not legally possible.All land managers have is use rights.
    Use rights that have been, and are being ,diminished by the day .
    .Legislation like the RMA plus Council regulations etc etc are largely responsible for NZs appalling productivity .
    If NZ is to compete in the world , our land managers need the authority to manage and use the land they pay rates on!

There must be parts of it that actually aren’t worth conserving, and it only gets additions such as when a crowd decides there’s yet another ‘iconic’ piece of land such as that Tasman beach on the top of South Island. In parallel with allowing commercial use of conservation estate remove tracts that aren’t actually worth preserving .. sell or lease them if you like.

    Screaming front page headlines about people buying guns for the gangs , this is yet another attack on Nicole McKee and the paper’s advocacy for the firearms register , which is an Ardernist , pointless and expensive exercise.
    Why ? The article itself acknowldges the licensee had gang family connections ; surely that’s a vetting failure ; likewise the police have busted the case , without the existence of the register !
    
    Then there’s a story by a journalist who got kicked out of a cafe for not spending much but taking up a table. The cafe is named and in a photo .
    Do reporters not care that real businesses have to work hard to make money .
    
    The editorial itself is more Branch Covidian promotionalism.

Driving past some newly built KO homes this morning made me wonder why they didn’t put clothes lines in for the tenants. Their washing is draped over fences. Perhaps there’s not enough room for a clothes line as the sections are tiny.

While one has to be careful because Kushner is speaking as Trump’s son-in-law, it is a very revealing picture of the Washington Machine’s reaction to having a non-politician as President. Yes, Trump is different, but there is no question he is focused on making change for the better. Kushner has examples of how Trump seeks advice from a range of people, asks probing questions in meetings, and makes decisions. This is contrasted with Obama, who regularly pushed the hard decisions into the future and wanted numerous meetings and discussions. Some interesting light is shone on foreign policy matters, particularly Mexico and Israel.

  It would be spectacularly interesting if the attentions and powers of the FBI and DOJ were turned onto properly examining 2020 ballot fraud without the ability of politically appointed beneficiaries (election winning judges, DAs, and politicians of various stripes) being able to shut it down – they could for example use cell phone data to track down and take a close look at the work and income histories of people who fit the ‘mule’ profile – they will be able to see where they lived, where they went, examine their bank records etc. Find a flip a few and a bloodbath would ensue.
  
  True the vote who were organisation that stumbled upon and identified the “2000 Mules” handed over all their data to (Georgia) GBI and FBI and were then studiously ignored except in as much as GBI moved heaven and earth and put them in jail to try and force disclosure of a whistleblowers identity – someone dangerous to the powers that be who absolutely had to be made an example of to prevent others talking.
  
  Use same federal power to closely examine voter roll and mail in ballot shenannigans.

Ban on oil and gas exploration to be overturned

The Government will overturn the ban on oil and gas exploration in New Zealand Minister for Resources Shane Jones says.

“Natural gas is critical to keeping our lights on and our economy running, especially during peak electricity demand and when generation dips because of more intermittent sources like wind, solar and hydro,” Jones said in a statement.

“When the exploration ban was introduced by the previous government in 2018, it not only halted the exploration needed to identify new sources, but it also shrank investment in further development of our known gas fields which sustain our current levels of use.

“Without this investment, we are now in a situation where our annual natural gas production is expected to peak this year and undergo a sustained decline, meaning we have a security of supply issue barrelling towards us.”

“Our petroleum and minerals sectors contributed $1.9 billion to GDP in 2020-21 and $236 million in Crown revenue in 2022-23. In 2023 mining employed around 6000 people, the majority of which are based in regional communities,” Mr Jones says.

“I want a considered discussion about how we use our natural resources to improve the security and affordability of energy and resources supplies, stimulate regional economic development opportunities, and increase New Zealand’s self-sufficiency to protect against volatile international markets.”/blockquote>

Tragically, the British political class did not have the capability (nor the will) to deliver on a democratic mandate and provide something useful.

From July, Blair, Campbell and Mandelson will be there in the shadows, setting the scene for a humiliating return.

My question to interested Kiwi Bloggers: if Germany had a similar referendum, do you think they would vote to leave the EU (such as it is today)?
I’m picking they would. And the Netherlands too. Possibly even France. Of course, they won’t get the chance (not for a while, at least).

  The only country even remotely interested in leaving the EU was the UK. Always a difficult fit with their EU partners. Even then, the vote was quite close.
  In the rest of Europe there would be a decisive “yes” vote. The EU may not be perfect, but for continental Europe it is way better than the alternative.

    There is no doubt that people like the freedom of travel, the sense of unity etc but there is also no doubt there are high levels of dissatisfaction about the EU Governmental system.
    It is too autocratic to the point of being dictatorial.

Dreadful poll for the coalition of chaos:

The Issues Monitor polled Kiwis in the week before the Budget and it shows the coalition is still struggling to get any traction with Kiwis. They gave the Government a grade of 4.6 out of 10 – not even a pass mark.

That number hasn’t changed since they came to power last year. And it’s a whisker ahead of the previous Labour Government’s worst mark of 4.5 out of 10.

The bad news doesn’t stop.

National is also losing ground on issues to Labour. Before the election Kiwis thought the blue team were better able to manage eight of the top 10 issues facing the country – that has fallen to just four out of 10 which is even-stevens with the red team.

And this was before Nicola Willis’ Cancer Budget!
