What’s truly remarkable is that there are no all-time greats in the Black Caps. Devon Conway started off like he might be, and sure, Ajax Patel will always have his tenfer. But Conway’s average is reverting to the mean, while away from Mumbai Ajaz is mostly ordinary. Man of the series Will Young made just 244 runs and was only playing due to Kane Williamson’s injury.

It’s true that we got them at a good time. India are in decline. Virat Kohli scored 93 all up, most of them in the one innings. R Ashwin is 38 and played like it, while R Jadeja only hit form in the Third Test. These players all have outstanding track records.

And yet we won 3-0, deservedly, with not a whisper of match fixing either. Outstanding!

  Bollocks I have been keen on Young ever since he made the squad. Along with Latham he is technically the most correct NZ test batsman and that includes Williamson these days. In my view Young should be opening, even when Williamson is back with Conway dropping to 5 and Mitchell or Phillips at 6.
  
  Ajaz Patel shows he gets results when he plays regularly against the best batsmen. It verges on criminal that he does not get mores test match play, notwithstanding his affinity with the Mumbai wicket. The more he bowls the better his results.

    NZ are not due to tour the sub continent until (I think) 2027-28. Ajaz is 36. It’s possible he’s played his last Test.

        Here’s played three tests previously in NZ for no wickets. 30% of his test wickets have been in two games at Mumbai

        Not much need for spin here, we have two batsmen that can bowl pretty good spin in Phillips and Ravindra. Also they seem to like Bracewell who was bowling very well before injury which is cleared up now. Bracewell is a superior batsmen which I think is what hampers Ijaz making the squad

    India produces different types of wickets for T20s and tests and T20 is the dominant form of the game over there.
    Their guys don’t know how to grind out runs on a turning wicket when they lose the toss.

      Spot on. India bat too recklessly. We took the 10th wicket in the 60th over in their first innings and then in the 30th over in their second. That’s the equivalent of being bowled out twice in a single day. Mind you, we batted twice for a touch over 110 overs.

      Apart from a rapid 26 by Glen Phillips a couple of days ago the next five fastest innings were all by Indians.
      The next one was Tim Southee who is noted for fast scoring if he scores at all
      Consequently two of the games were over in under three days and the other only lasted to the fifth day because more than a day was lost to rain.
      In 1949 NZ played four three day tests in England and they were all drawn

  NMTB, Youngs batting won the last test for NZ. He played outstandingly well on that track. The 50 he got in the second innings was outrageously good batting. Commit and play right back, or right forward, play with soft hands, keep your hands up, don’t reflexively follow the turn. And since DRS, get your front pad out of the way. All easy to say, but desperately difficult to do on a pitch that is ripping and bouncing at speed. When you say “just” 244 runs, on top of winning the last test, he also guided them home in the first. In terms of Conway, he opens for NZ and plays at least half his games here. That doesn’t do any favours for your average.

    Conway is too loose. Big gap between bat and pad both on attack and defence. I am sure he would be better when the shine is off the ball.
    
    BTW I did not see it but did he drop Pant yesterday? I read on cricinfo that Conway did well to get there but, it was a catch that should have been taken.

    Ravindra, Young & Conway were our top scorers overall with not much between then.
    The top individual innings and only century by an Indian was 150 by Safaraz Khan who otherwise scored 21 in his other five innings.
    I read somewhere once how difficult it was for players to get back out there and start from zero after a career pinnacle

  India were hoisted by their own petard by putting out spinning pitches for the last two games. That made it a bit of a lottery, and we came out on the right side by winning the tosses.
  
  Simon Doull made the point that India has traditionally done well by producing flat pitches at home, and hightlighting the difference between their spinners and the opposition ones.
  
  But, in the last two games, any spinner was going to do well on those pitches. And winning the tosses gave us the edge in that respect.

    NZ usually plays only 2-test series. When 3- or 4-test series were more common, draws were more frequent. T20 has had the effect of vastly increasing the scoring rates in FC matches, so results are much more common.

  I saw the last half of that. Lawson fought tooth and nail to stay ahead of Perez and Hamilton. Because he was having to drive defensively he really didn’t have a chance to gain more places. But I am sure Red Bull will be impressed with his tenacity holding off two experienced F1 drivers like that.

  What happens after the voting is done and Trump is the clear winner? Democrats will try to prevent Trump taking office. The tools at their disposal are violent demonstrations and legal maneuvering.
  
  But what are the alternatives to Trump taking office? Harris as the loser cant legitimately be installed. Biden’s turn comes to an end by law and there is no mechanism to extend it. The US cant be left without a President after Biden leaves office. Congress appoints the President? The Supreme Court appoints an Acting President until the matter is settled?
  
  In these circumstances anything other than Trump being installed makes the US no better than any other corrupt pseudo-democratic republic.

Is Kamala Harris in US the Ardern of NZ? Lord help that country if that is the case! Look at the reconstruction NZ now faces following the damage and destruction in the last six years. The only blessing for the U.S. is that the there is a check and balance with the Republicans likely to control the Senate.

I was away from KB for the week end and came back this morning to read DPF’s motivation for adding a Ministry for Men.

“We should have a Minister for Men, just as we have a Minister for Women. That is because men and women do need different things from the health and education systems (and men are doing much worse in them).”

In my opinion, this misses the main issue: Groups of people (by gender, race etc) do not have needs. Individuals do.

Men and women do not need different things and have different issues just because they are men or women. Instead, individuals in these groups have individual needs at different rates.

Splitting them up by race, gender etc is completely broken.

For example, let us pick suicide. Men have suicide rates higher than women.

OK, se let’s get this hypothetical Men’s Ministry to tackle this issue. They would consider their job done when male and female suicide rates are the same.

This is not dealing with the suicide problems and dealing with individual suicide needs.

Indeed, the likely outcome would be female suicide rates increasing until they match male suicide rates.

As we see with both Maori Ministries (and Maori focus units) and Women’s Ministires, most of their efforts seem to be combatative – blaming the Evil Pakeha and Evil Men for problems without fixing anything.

Likely all a Ministry of Men would do is the same: just blame women because that’s easier than actually doing anything constructive.

So please, let’s just get rid of all these identity politics agencies. They are divisive. They make problems worse (and kudos to BY for pointing that out).

Statists must stop thinking the state is the solution to everything.

If we must have government agencies then have them focus on fixing problems – not on identity politics.

    Yup, National was once the party of reducing government. Now they’re a statist party too.
    Sure they are not as nutty as Labour, but aren’t really that far off. We’re well down the road to a Labour/National uni-party.
    
    Just based on party policy positions, Labour and National are now the most obvious coalition partners going forwards.
    
    This mirrors what we see in South Africa. The ANC and the DA (once the main party and opposition) are now in the sack.

    That’s the Greens. No sane person takes them seriously. We expect them to have nutty policy, so that does not matter.

    It makes about as much sense as reading Winnie the Pooh, and believing that the story is really a blueprint for building a hydro-dam.
    
    I’ve met people that could extrapolate those types of interpretations.. Most ended in rehab, Hillmorton, or died an early death trying to fly a broomstick over the edge of a cliff.

  That is an undeniable fact that has been true throughout history.
  
  Subjecting individuals against their will to any kind of ‘Group Think’ or ‘Group Action’ is totally wrong and will always result in bad outcomes.
  
  If you run through the list of Govt Ministries, almost all of them are some sort of collective grouping that runs roughshod over individuals in that group. They pretend to exist to help that group, but they don’t. Does MPI help individual farmers? – No, they are a pain in the arse.
  
  We will only thrive as a society when (not if) we get rid of the Government Blob (central and local).

  I read an interesting statistic recently, not only are women unlikely to be in active service in much of the world, but civilian casualties are one and a half times higher for men.
  Goodness gracious, I’m such a victim, Govern Mental Men’s Ministry needed immediately, let’s waste another half billion a year.

  The proliferation of micro ministries under Labour was a mechanism for Labour activists to lobby ministers and bypass the scrutiny of large ministries’ policies. It produced a figleaf for direct electioneering to Labour voters, via the ministries quietly funding Labour activists’ projects.
  
  It also helps with equity optics.
  If the Ministry of Education launched a 100 uni scholarships for high achievers and they all went to women it looks biased, but create a Ministry of Women and naturally all the scholarships go to women. In a micro ministry the definition of high achiever can be tweaked to be more “inclusive”.
  
  If polls showed women voted 70% National and ACT then Labour would abolish the ministry by lunchtime.

It’s the women, people, as I have been suggesting since last Wednesday evening; shy-Harris voters.

We won’t know if this poll is an outlier or not until Wednesday or Thursday, but it could be the first poll to pick up the fact that women are breaking for Harris in droves. Combined with the fact that Harris appears to be peaking whereas Trump appears to be fading, and a record turnout — If we vote, we win! — and it’s beginning to look good for Harris.

    An irritating, but common, habit is for some Kiwiblog commenters to write as though what they say is representative. Representative of whom: right-thinking people? Humans? Although many commenters appear to think they are in an echo chamber (“who on Earth would downtick that”, etc.) and there are probably many sentiments a large majority of commenters hold in common, comments even in this thread reveal that many don’t believe there is any such things as identity groups, let alone any which would merit the use of ‘we’, etc.

    Its a hard one that we see in the US as well. I think the left has become very good are messaging to young woman. I suspect the ‘feelz’ sales pitch works a lot better on them then it does the old and males. Likely because woman are generally more emotional. Age and experience bring the ‘wisdom’ to know that the feelz need some backing in reality, which might be why we don’t see it in older woman.

      In the USA there is a very clear issue: abortion.
      
      Here it is much harder to see what the issues might be. It might just be welfare.
      
      We now have the situation where over half of the families with children get WFF ( a form of welfare). Add all the other beneficiaries and you can understand why the Labour Party(which should really rebrand to the Welfare Party) get the thumbs up.

        Reminded me to go look up the abortion stats….I wanted to know the number of weeks pregnant the women were at the time of abortion but unfortunately they only give an average (about 60 days).
        
        Latest report is 2023 so data from 2022, here are some highlights:
        * 26% of them are for Maori (either they are more fertile, which is obviously unfair and should be addressed, or they are more slack in using contraception).
        * Of those who had an abortion in 2022, 61.8% had not been using any contraception. i.e. abortion is their method of contraception!
        
        You’ll also be happy to know that they are “embedded Te Tiriti” whatever the hell that means, and that it was only women having abortions, so clearly women pretending to be blokes (like the one in the news over the weekend) are way more responsible in using contraceptives.

    Trump was making the “chickenhawk” argument. The exact same criticism was made, mostly from the left, of Liz’s dad Dick Cheney 20 years ago. And viciously so. Of course, Liz and Dick have kissed and made up with the left.

Like when Harris recently claimed she once worked at McDonalds in her teens in a typically inauthentic and lazy Harris campaign attempt at appealing to ordinary people. The entire journalisming industry concentrated their journalisming resources on finding this evidence and they found none.

  Those first two are basically fabrications.
  
  The first was in the context of illegal immigration. Preventing that reduces the amount of potential attacks on women, and doing that protects both democrat and republican women, whether they like it or not.
  
  The second one was (iirc) in the context of military service, and for all Cheney’s big words, she wouldn’t like it if she was handed a rifle and had to confront a bunch of the enemy pointing their rifles at her head intent on killing her.

If Maori didn’t think they were going to cede sovereignty when they signed the treaty, what did they think would happen to that sovereignty whenever they sold some of their land to the crown?
If they had sovereignty before they signed the treaty, why did they need to sign a treaty?

  The media here are all over the poll that DPF posted the other day that had K winning. The ignore all the other polls. Unlike NZ there are enough polls that the ‘poll of poll average’ is what should be followed, but that doesn’t fit the NZ narrative.
  
  Stunningly our media seem more biased with election reporting then much of the US media. People relying of the NZ legacy media would be forgiven for thinking Trump is Hitler, Trumps election will be a disaster for NZ, Kamala is the second coming of Jesus and decisively ahead in the polls.

Didn’t realise it was NBC at the time, only just when I searched the link.

They say

Pen has many issue with its voting systems that might cause people think its dodgy.

The officials have changed things but only to make it quicker to confirm the vote and make challenging results harder.

The author seems to think the above should make people feel good about the results coming out of PA!

The way I read it, PA vote has lots of issues, especially with consistency of rules. This inconsistency allows local officials to make decisions that could favour a team they support. State officials have done nothing to deal with this, which seems strange as you would think they would want to improve systems, being a swing state and all. Officials have made it hard for a side to challenge the outcome before it is confirmed. As we know, challenging after confirmation is portrayed as election interference.

To me this is just crazy. If they are not cheating, and we have to assume they aren’t, why on earth would you make everything look and feel so suspicious?

School buses are to be taken away from the Clive to Havelock North route.

The distance is 12km. There are already public buses but apparently those leave the wee mites with 2km to walk.

2km walk is bugger all, but no doubt, the public bus could respond to market demands and tack that extra 2km to their route.

12km on the flat. C’mon kids – get out your bikes!

Some are saying this will negatively impact truancy. I say bollocks. They already have massive truancy with the school bus. Will taking it away actually move the needle?

Scientists have created a new compound that can self-destruct cancer cells. The compound is made up of two proteins, which researchers “glued” together. They describe the process in a paper published earlier this month in the journal Science.

The new compound was developed after Gerald Crabtree, MD, a professor of development biology, began to muse over the decades-old discovery that cells can trigger their own deaths if they determine that is the best course of action for the body. Almost invariably if there’s a major natural disaster the effected people complain the relevant emergency services reacted too slowly.
The other day an area of Spain was pummeled by torrential rain that caused all sorts of destruction and straightaway the grizzling started, which may or may not have been justified.
Yesterday the King & Queen went to one area with PM and other political leaders and all sorts of shit was chucked at them. At least the King didn’t scurry away and good on him for fronting up in the first place.
Spain was a dictatorship until 49 years ago. I wonder if that has a lingering distrust of authority

Poor bugger.

Some people , like his tenants, don’t deserve to be judged and considered by the normal social values, they are simply beyond redemption.
This sort of people will also commit other crimes: shoplifting, assaults, theft, road rage incidents, family violence.

And yes, there is “this sort of people”: they have no social conscience.
We have all seen them or heard of them at some time.

Here is an idea: ALL tenants, whether private or government/council beneficiaries, should be photographed, named and registered on a national database so that incidents such as this can be investigated and circulated.

NO tenant should be forgiven for destroying a landlord’s property.
Nobody should be forgiven for destroying ANYONE’s property.

Why are landlords treated as some sort of second-class, irrelevant people ?

  Good idea. But perhaps it should be extended to include ALL people who might commit crimes. And set the threshold very low so no potential scumbags escape – anyone ever stopped by the police, or anyone with parking, driving infringements. And people who don’t queue nicely.
