So derelect Dixon Street flats are in the news again as KO (ex Government Housing Corporation) try and evict the last tenants. They have Grade 1 Heritage Protection so cannot be demolished. Seems to me that what to do with with the building has been sitting in someone’s ‘too hard’ basket for years (you cannot be sacked for sitting on your hands). Presumably someone has figured that it is more economic to bowl the building and start over which runs against the heritage protection so the situation is deadlocked.
Possibly counting against retention would be the need for significant earthquake strengthening and the need for serious fire protection and other works to being the building up to modern standard which would be triggered by seeking a building permit for earthquake strengthening. Presumably this potentially requires serious expenditure possibly greater than the cost of a new building.
This raises the point of whether the owner (KO) should be lumbered with serious expenditure because the building was heritage protection. The responsible Minister could promote special legislation to remove heritage protection but then all hell could break loose.
Something is broken and there seems to be no fix in sight.

  They should rewrite the legislation so that the economic cost of keeping the building is balanced against the heritage value. Should not be difficult and would only upset a small number of people.

    Give the Heritage Foundation charity status and let them fundraise to purchase at market value properties they consider to be of value.

        Important work my left foot. My sister and my son both own houses that have heritage status. When my sister upgrade her house they got a massive $1000 contribution towards maintaining the character of the house which was essentially a dump when they bought it. My sisters place was a 1910/14 “kit set house” in Devonport that no one except them and Heritage NZ had the slightest interest in.
        Similarly, my son’s house is from this era, and it too was a dump when his partner bought it. My son has now bought into the house. As a builder he can upgrade it fairly cost effectively as they’ll do the work in their own time. The reality is that except for its age (1914) it has no historical relevance. No famous person lived there and no historical family wants the place.
        I don’t have an issue with some places being given historical status, but it has to make sense and incorporate a lot more than just “it’s old”. As an example Edmond Hillary’s old family home may have significant historical value, but some 100 year old place around the corner doesn’t.

        There was an old brick church hall behind St Johns Cathedral in Napier which somehow survived the 1931 earthquake. The old Cathedral was destroyed by the earthquake.When I saw it there were large cracks in the brickwork but somehow it survived until the 1980’s. It of course pre-dated the Art Deco rebuilds so there was nothing particularly historic about it. Because of heightened concerns about earthquakes the Dean (who I knew well) had to close the building and the only real option was demolition. Then some busybody went to the (then) Historic Places Trust who wanted to slap a heritage designation on it which the Parish successfully resisted and it was demolished. This signaled that the Trust would designate a building at the drop of a hat regardless of circumstances. I did not renew my Trust annual membership.

  The Govt needs to suck it up and follow the (stupid) rules it has set for pivate owners. If this situation highlights the issues to the govt pehaps they should be kind enough to fix the heritage buildings system.
  
  Its the same as RMA stuff. Dont put special laws to allow special projects to pass and leave a crappy system for all the unlucky ‘non special’ projects. Luckily the govt seems to be well on the way to dealing with the RMA. Something previous govts, in particular Labour, have struggled to do.

  Private owners have been known to just let the buildings fall into such disrepair that they have to be demolished for being a risk to public safety. Perhaps KO is applying this strategy?
  
  It raises an interesting question of whether a Grade 1 Heritage Order trumps the Council’s Earthquake Prone Building policy or a red sticker after the next major shake.

  Judging by the cost of earthquake strengthening the Wgtn central library, it would be cheaper to bowl the flats and if you want build a replica.
  
  BTW, the Wgtn library cost is currently sitting at $189M. And it is and always has been a but ugly building. Compare this with the Chch library, cost to build was $92M and it’s a gorgeous building to boot. I’d emailed a few councillors a few years back and said if you want to keep the old library, pull it down and build a replica as it would be a lot cheaper.

  I went to Salisbury in 1988 and rented a pushbike to go and see Stonehenge about ten miles away
  Place was a huge disappointment too, but some people see some value in the place
  By contrast to get there I passed through some dinky die villages with thatched roofed cottages and pubs near meandering brooks and old stone churches
  People like me stop and have a beer and think how marvelous it must be to live in such idyllic surroundings
  People who live there pray for the day they can get the fuck out of there

Upset folk in Opotiki getting a lot of airtime about police raids, in the Herald today. Opotiki Mongrel Mob raids: Kuia says she was strip-searched, mothers tell how kids ‘traumatised’ by armed police

Herald reporting people are traumatised by police raids, and suffering long lasting effects including seeing family members arrested and removed from the home. 15 Opotiki homes were raided, and 22 of those charged were from the town.

Doubt many New Zealanders will be too bothered about ‘traumatised’ adults who are keeping children in households harbouring alleged criminals and drug dealers. One household with children alleged to have been raided 4 times in the last year, might have been a hint, and still there are are littlies living there. Maybe those adults could have considered the impact on the children of living with (alleged) criminals and drug dealers, and the potential positive impact on children seeing the justice system at work. And maybe they should be thankful if at least some of those charged are likely to be removed from the community for decent stretches.

Would have been quite nice to see the Herald include details of harm caused to families, including children by drug use in and from Opotiki.

Of course there is also the possibility none of the 22 charged will be convicted and the police will be found to have overreached, so there’s that.

  Headline news about gang arrests is fake news. The gang members have all been arrested dozens of times before and nothing happens to them. Gangs are protected by the police and the state and actively promoted by MSM. Massively funded by the welfare state. Next time you see a gang member he is nothing but a ward of the state. Gang patches more like I heart the govt.
  
  The recent Opotiki arrests, wonder if they have been pushed by the Police minister for some quick headlines for the cattle. Nothing will happen to the arrested. They will be fine. MSM will use the arrests to promote the gangs instead.

  I’m sick of headlines like “Luxon defends”. So what if Luxon called taxpayers customers. I’d love the rest of government to refer to me as a customer and treat me as such. Competing for my money by providing better quality goods and services at lower prices (which they are doing under Luxon).
  
  And the constant gotcha attempts by dim witted journalists, effortlessly batted away by Luxon, is getting a tad boring. So what if he sold his apartment (in the current property market trough) when he moved into premier house, he won’t continue in parliament as an MP so he has no need for the apartment.
  
  I predicted Luxon will be our most successful PM. The corporate management tools he is using to get results are working at unprecedented speed.
  
  My only disappointments are
  – Adern isn’t being held to account for her corruption,
  – the covid response report hasn’t been completed with suggested consequences for law breakers,
  – Seymours excellent treaty principals bill isn’t being supported beyond first reading…. yet.
  
  I’d also like to see measures implemented to prevent Kieran McAnulty following his Predecessors examples by wrecking our society and economy for his own personal enrichment (see my holding adern to account comment above),

  I suspect it is the former, which means the “kuia” referred to in the story might be a 50 year old gang moll who is just a guilty as her male peers.

NZ economy still in trouble in 2025. Key used China to bail out NZ 2011 onward. But that China aspect looks to be closed off due to govt ending all the dirty money.

China itself is in bit of problem with its housing market and debt. Also the signal well & truly out that China vs GAE coldish war underway. The neolib wet dreams for China are over. China looked at the garbage running the West (except Trump of course but he was disposed in the fake 2020 election) and said no thanks to the shitlibs.

China is an important indicator for NZ economy. NZ’s move towards India hasnt panned out. Not sure of the story there. A lot of Indians here but no formal arrangement with India??. But overall China is on the outter and not good for NZ economy.

  1. The EU is failing as its last industrial powerhouse, Germany, crumbles under green energy BS, a lack of cheap Russian gas, and is drowned by immigrants. The rest of the EU failed many years ago and is currently propped up by Germany.
  2. The UK is a debt-ridden mess and about to endure 5 years of Starmer.
  3. Japan has no runway left to maneuver, massive debt that can only be defaulted on, and an old-age demographic problem with no solution.
  
  When ’empires’ are snookered like this, there is only one last scenario unfortunately…..

        First shear from Lambs is mixed with Merino to make clothing while the other coarse wool is mixed with synthetics to make carpets and furniture. China buys the overwhelming majority of our wool to blend with their synthetics followed by Europe and then India lagging way behind for their size.

The series win by the NZ cricket team in India is so unusual and so unexpected and so rare that I have a suspicion.
India is the centre of sport gambling, and it would not surprise me if the series win was a setup. I wonder what the odds were before the first game, but the Black Caps had an awful lead-up to the series losing games all over the place and then miracle of miracles – a series win in the most unlikely place in the world.
Yes – a nice bit of data for the record book – but I am sure there are some very well boosted bank balances in India and around the world especially S.America where these things (betting by sports team members) seem to happen

    The number of people I have spoken to who think that the candidate vote decides the government is quite depressing.
    I would suggest that this needs to be taught in school from an early age, however it appears that between teacher only days, study leave, Covid, and rampant absenteeism, kids are never in class!

    Hmm, dunno about that David. It forces Presidential candidates to appeal to a wide variety of people across the country, particularly not just in the big cities.
    Though the creation of the college to be fair, was a bit of a sop to the Southern states since their population was made up of a decent chunk of slaves, 40% or so. And back then, there were no political parties. It was more of a work around as they couldn’t find another solution that everyone would agree on.

  In the 2016 election there was a concerted effort by Clinton to “turn” electors who travelled to Washington for the official electoral college vote.
  She wanted Democrat controlled states (whose voters unexpectedly chose Trump) to reselect the actual people to vote in the electoral college.
  The chosen electors are not required by law to vote according to their instructions, so the choice of people to become electors is crucial.
  Apparently she was doing this to “save democracy”.

      Yes that is true. That is why the vaccine passes were madness.
      
      Having said that, most New Zealanders only got their two shots to get their vaccine pass. The vaccine does seem to provide some protection from contracting the virus for four to six months. So if you were to get a booster every six months you would significantly reduce your chances of contracting covid.
      
      BTW there is only one reason that I get a booster every six months. A common effect of severe covid disease is coagulating of the blood. Due to a medical condition that could prove fatal.

But the graphics are very pretty, and it has great use of colour. But it all as accurate as their coverage of the Kackling One.

    Fair question. I never used to watch it, I watched the TV3 show which was much much better. I have always thought the TVNZ version was crap.
    
    I watch it becuase while I have breakfast and get ready for work its handy to have a clock on the screen, news coverage and weather forcasts. I dont want to stream something I am interested in and I dont get the paper.

      Trade and exports has declined under successive Governments , manufacturing,pastoral agriculture products replaced with Tourism , immigration ,and other service industries. Sheep numbers down from 70 million down to about 20, Freezing works are closing .
      Manufacturing has largely moved off shore Example the iconic Fisher and Paykel .
      Forest processors can’t get enough electricity to survive.
      Many of the remaining industries eg dairy forestry have a huge debt mountain and many of those that don’t are owned offshore.
      NZ does not now have sufficient export productivity to be regarded as an influential trading nation.

    Yvette, this is actually a very good and not so out there idea, although I think slightly off the mark. As a Christian Conservative I would see this from a slightly different angle. Christians believe that “at our core” we actually know what’s right and wrong. In simple terms, Huge Hefner of Bunny Girl fame was interviewed, and at the time his daughter was in her late teens, or early 20s. The interviewer raised this and asked “when is your daughter going to put on a bunny suit and come to join the party?”
    Hefner’s reply is telling, he stuttered a bit then said: ” You know this is the one part of my philosophy that I struggle with, you see I don’t want by daughter to be a bunny girl!”
    The Biblical phrase is: “god has written his laws on the tablets of our heart”.
    This means not just as a lefty, but any one of significant liberal mind set living in opposition to God’s laws of right and wrong, such a person is living in constant mental and psychological conflict, with part of their “system” telling them what they are doing is wrong, and the other part urging them to “do what they want” because this is no absolute right and wrong.
    The conservative, typically with a biblical based morality even if not specifically Christian, living closer to God’s standards of right and wrong doesn’t experience this level of internal conflict.

On the subject of heritage buildings in NZ (I can’t be bothered finding a suitable place to insert this in the excellent conversation above).

It is a real problem, with a powerful few, effecting the many.

We have buildings that are either way past any theoretical design life, and/or simply not suited to modern standards.
It is expensive (and risky) fixing up older buildings. The Wellington Central Library, and Town Hall are exemplars of this fallacy.
Perhaps, just as significant, we have a substantial loss of utility while these knackered old structures are under restoration. Wellington has had no town hall for over a decade. A significant number of the rate payers that have funded the work won’t live to use the building. And yes, they could have had a lovely library, for half the money, and be using it today.
Heritage New Zealand does not bother itself with such trifles – they are part of an ever-growing blob of single-issue institutions that are incapable of objectively assessing democratic value.

Why are buildings singly so affected by this ideology? Why not cars, clothes, or computers? Imagine being forced to run a ‘70’s Datsun and an Amstrad 64 because someone else, with little-or-no skin in the game, decides that it would be nice that you should.

This is emblematic of one of our biggest problems today – spending money we don’t have, on stuff that doesn’t matter.

Yesterday Mike wrote that the FSU did nothing and he only joined organisations that did do. That’s fair enough but he had ignored what the FSU had achieved in getting charges withdrawn against an anti abortion person. Today FSU reports that after several difficult meetings with the Police Commissioner the police are now reviewing how they interpretate hate speach and will also be reviewing their training of officers. I believe this is doing things.

Big day for USA and the world tomorrow.

538 has PA flipped to Harris by 0.2%. and Harris to win 50/100 Trump to win 49/100. both have moved against Trump in the last 2 days.

Popular vote is predicted at 48.1% Harris to 46.2 Trump.

Trump won handily with 46.2% of the vote Vs Clinton in 2016.

So its going to be very very tight IMHO. Trump certainly has not finished well like I thought he would.

Yet another article on Labour criticising the Govt. I don’t think National got as much airtime when Labour was in govt. And going by Labours track record and failure to do anything remotely competent I fail to see how they can be criticising anything the Nat’s are doing. All made possible of course by the MSM aka the real opposition party.
