A green lanyard with sunflowers, invented by Gatwick Airport to identify passengers needing extra assistance, has been seized upon by activists as a new way of showing their specialness.

Harsh? The clue is in the word “they”.

“Disabled Kiwis say a green lanyard with sunflowers is helping them get extra support, without the rigmarole of having to explain their disability to strangers.
Christchurch resident Eliot Forrest, 24, has chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyaligia (a nerve pain condition) and post orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) – conditions that can make them feel dizzy and faint.”

All of these afflictions are essentially self diagnosed, cannot be objectively tested for and don’t affect life expectancy.

Smell a rat?

  These conditions all sound a bit dodgy but they are nevertheless real for many people. In fact I have all three of them sometimes. Used to get one or more every Monday morning but now that I’m retired I’m much better. But for all that, we have a neighbour afflicted with CFS and it’s very real for her.

    Yep, I’m not saying those conditions aren’t real (though POTS is apparently the maladie du jour among young people). The coincidence I’m referring to is that the person who has all three also has gender identity issues. Of course, these ailments may spring from any gender-transition drugs, if any, being ingested. Or, they might just be a manifestation of LAMS*.

      Whenever I feel lightheaded standing up, invariably my blood pressure is about 100/60 which is a signal to drink more water to get it back closer to 120/80

        That’s not POTS rather presyncope. Ironically, I used to get it when very fit as I had a very slow heart rate (<40) and low blood pressure. POTS is a different kettle of fish and while for most it is just an inconvenience for a minority a right royal pain in the proverbial. I don't have POTS so no axe to grind.

        it is more the autonomic nervous system. It will cause brain fog, muscle pain and fatigue, low blood pressure, heart rate issues, digestive issues. Shortness of breath. Eye sight problems. Lightheadedness, leg weakness. And because of the digestive issues other issues will come along as well.
        
        One of the better supplements I have found is parasym plus, which stimulates the vagus nerve. Other supplements help as well, as does greatly increasing the salt intake,
        
        Medically they can give you beta blockers which aren’t worth taking as they will drop the blood pressure more. When it is bad being put on a saline drip for a bag or two helps.
        
        Exercise is important. I aim for 10,000 steps a day, but some days all I can reach is 1000. State of mind is important to, not giving up or letting it win.

        Yeah, I drink a lot of water and put salt in it in the morning to help up my salt intake. I’ve been looking at some research and an Indian doctor who has some success with focusing on Gut Microbiota, so that’s my current plan of attack

    Yes, I have ankolysing spondylitis, which was caused by a fall of 3 m. from a roof when the ladder collapsed 15 years ago. Essentially damage to the Sacra-iliac joint & the ensuing arthritis, back & joint pain.
    Fortunately I have a high pain tolerance & mild medication – the stronger medication I was previously on almost gave me chronic kidney disease – so I just suck it up.

I must commend the stuff journalist Tony Wall for his effort published this morning about Tom Phillips, the Marikopa solo father who is in the bush with his kids.
Wall goes to a great deal of effort to be fair. Certainly a lot fairer than some of the anti-Phillips reporting and commentary of late. Even by hacks working for his own outlet.
He went and talked to people, and he appeared to treat Tom Phillips’ parents with respect.
Some of the reporting of late has worried me.
I have questions about Cat, the children’s mother.
Why do the media not identify her by her full name? Her Phillips children are identified by name, and even by photos.
Why can’t she be more than just ‘Cat’?
There’s a lot of chat up in the Waikato and King Country about her that doesn’t get reported in the legacy media. Stuff that our fearless hacks haven’t asked her about.
For example, is it true that Cat has a criminal record?
Is it true that her convictions result from dealing in drugs and some other illegal activities?
Is it true that a partner – not Thomas Phillips – sexually abused one of her young children and she did nothing about it?
Knowing the answers is pertinent to a public that is being sold a story, that is being asked to sympathise with a mother appealing for the return of her children to her.
Our media have been far too partisan. I mean, for God’s sake!, The New Zealand Herald tried to give the story extra legs by trying to suggest that the Army’s Special Air Service be sent in to join the hunt.
Hunting a solo father on the lam in the bush with his kids is not what the SAS is for – he’s not a terrorist.
The notion should be resisted.
Media have also tried to give the story oxygen by finding ‘experts’ to comment about how this living in the bush might be affecting the children.
They don’t know because they don’t know the kids. So why bother?
It seems evident that the police are not trying their damndest to find Tom Phillips and his kids.
They have most likely realised that they have bigger priorities – like tackling gangs and their profiteering from drugs.
I also read that a judge had awarded custody of the Phillips children to the chief executive of Oranga Tamariki.
Can you think of a stronger, better reason for a man to gather his kids about him and protect them than letting them into the clutches of a chief executive who could not explain to Heather du Plessis-Allan his failure to protect Malachi Rain Subecz?
Or his failure to protect so many other children known to his agency and who were bashed to death by people charged with loving them and caring for them.
The bush might not be ideal but the kids might know that they’re safest with Dad.

  This country is in serious trouble. All the innuendo in the world about the mother is not going to change the fact that Phillips is out there committing crimes. ‘If’ she has a criminal record – and I said ‘if’ – then that means she submitted to the authorities and accepted her punishment. Tom Phillips hasn’t done that. This is a man who allegedly fired a shot at a member of the public in the aftermath of his bank robbery. The people supporting the guy on this site obviously support criminal behaviour, no other conclusion can be reached. You could ‘look after’ your kids in the bush, but when you start stealing from others and carrying out violent crimes then you have crossed a line and don’t deserve sympathy. Tom Phillips would have a criminal record himself if he manned up and stopped his selfish ongoing carry on. And the thing that is no doubt staying the Polices hand in bringing this whole thing to a conclusion is the fact Phillips is armed, dangerous, and may do something to those children if cornered. Nobody has the right to behave as Phillips has behaved, nobody.

      It is disturbing. All it takes is some innuendo against the mother and this guy apparently has carte blanche to behave however he sees fit, and must be just ‘left alone’. If he happens to gun someone down when committing some act against society, the Police should just shrug their shoulders and say “laws be damned, it’s Tom Phillips – he is a special case and must be left alone”. Can his fan club not see the hypocrisy in smearing the mother as ‘criminal’ while Phillips is out there breaking the law with impunity?!

      It is possible for someone to be a criminal and a good person. Just as it is possible to not be a criminal but a bad person. The law and the state and the powerful are not always right and often can commit great evil. In fact millions of people have died at the hands of the state. Particularly the communist state over the past 100 years.
      
      Just look at the mess that OT have made with the messing around with the Māori girl in a loving adopted family. Could they be any more useless?
      
      I would much rather be one of Tom’s children than one of the thousands of hidden children being actively abused and neglected in NZ. Children in houses where they are given access to cannabis, meth, alcohol. Subjected to violence, physically, mentally, sexually. Mocked for having aspirations, encouraged to be truant.
      
      No doubt you feel great anguish at Tom’s intense family values. They diminish the power of the Marxist state. Of course he must be stomped on, and made an example of.

      I was going to ask just what has Tom Phillips been convicted of. One is not a criminal until convicted, surely. The Police stated they “think it was Tom Phillips.” The Police also thought Arthur Thomas was a double murderer, Teina Pora was a rapist and murderer, Peter Ellis was a pedo. Among others. Lets wait till he is convicted of something before labeling him a criminal huh?

    But he’s literally the definition of ‘armed and dangerous’, hes unpredictable, and he has three kids held hostage.
    Who would want the harm – or possibly the death – of three kids on their conscience from hunting the father down?
    I agree the father needs to be brought to justice, but I don’t envy the tightrope the cops are having to walk on this case.

  Some here don ‘t like what I wrote.
  If I may explain …
  I found it refreshing to read what seemed to be a straight-down-the-middle report from an outlet that is notorious now for not publishing straight-down-the-middle reports any more.
  As a citizen I believe I have a right to receive news that is factual and fair and informing.
  That has been missing mostly.
  We have had media putting in front of us selected facts and opinions intended to advance agendas.
  One such agenda, it seems to me, is to get me to sympathise with a mother who is without her children.
  As I said: there is a lot of chat up in King Country and Waikato by rumour that has been ignored in the legacy media.
  I have been a solo father. The mother of my children spared me the torture chamber that is the Family Court. I thank her to my dying day for that.
  But I do know from first-hand experience what it is like to be a Dad bringing up his kids alone, to be misunderstood (not to the extent of law-breaking), to be treated with suspicion especially by women, and having to deal with people who think they know your situation and what’s best for the kids better than you do.
  Tom Phillips will have to answer for whatever criminal acts he has committed.
  But the story about his actions of the last three years might be more nuanced than we are presented.
  The police put up a reward of $80,000 for information leading to his capture.
  From what I’ve read not a penny of it has been claimed.
  Think about that: no-one has shopped him for such a colossal sum of money.
  That tells me that there is more to this story than we get told.

  The points about the alleged criminal behavior of this party and that party are interesting and perhaps relevant to the children’s custody but are totally irrelevant to getting them out of the bush and into a home with a roof, and into a school with teachers and books.
  Expert trackers are exactly what this situation requires, the could be deer stalkers or zoologists, but if the best are special forces soldiers, then those would be the ones to use.
  Is Tom Phillips really doing the best for his children? Anyone of them is only a broken bone or cut away from a slow and painful death.

Hikoi baggage

AI – Charles “Chuck” Colson [not to be confused with Tucker Carlson], who served time in prison following his involvement in the Watergate scandal, observed that many African American inmates were “enslaved a second time,” but not physically; rather, it was a mental and systemic form of enslavement. He noted that many prisoners were trapped in a cycle of poverty, lack of education, and limited economic opportunity. Colson believed that this created a sense of hopelessness and dependency, which reinforced the cycle of incarceration and poverty, keeping these individuals “enslaved” to a system that did not offer a realistic path to self-improvement.

Colson’s prison ministry work, founded after his release, aimed to address these systemic issues by promoting rehabilitation, faith, and support networks to empower individuals and break the cycles of re-incarceration and socio-economic disadvantage. His perspective emphasized that true freedom required not just physical liberty but the means to overcome psychological and social barriers that inhibit growth and independence.

A couple of decades ago Colson was interviewed by legendary New Zealand journalist Brian Edwards and the impression of a second “mental” enslavement of a people who had been physically enslaved, had very obvious parallels to a people who were once colonised (to various degrees), being colonised a second time, mentally, and often by themselves.

“After nine years of this National Government, propped up by the Māori party, there’s not a lot to brag about. Māori are more likely to be overweight, depressed, homeless, incarcerated and uneducated according to these disturbing statistics produced under National’s watch” – Kelvin Davis, quoting the most negative mantra regarding Maori (perhaps “hate speech” if that were law) but this time attempting cheap political gain against the Maori Party. “There’s no mana for Māori who support a waka that’s shackled to the National Party.” [1]

Davis’ Maori mantra is about FAILURE, as much as He Puapua is about SEPARATISM (enough separatism to breach the Treaty, which we forget while David Seymour is damned for the same ‘crime’).
This realm of Maori suspended between failure and aspiration is one mind-set that will see what is expected to be a massive, imminent display of unity – a Maori hikoi – without any state-owned television current affairs analysis of what is happening, as was when COMPASS, INQUIRY and GALLERY – Brian Edwards, Geoff Walker, Joe Coté, and Dairne Shanahan et alia – at least attempted to inform a nation.

What is there in its place?

    I have never stated that’s what I want.
    
    I’ve argued since 2022 that Ukraine will never defeat Russia, so why wage war, it’s pointless and costs many innocent lives. The more US money and weapons pumped in the more lives are lost. It’s simple maths. But it is numbers that wreck generations of livelihoods. It is beyond stupid.

        This is not the second world war, however much both sides like to treat it as a reenactment of the eastern front. It is a stupid and miserable family squabble, and when it’s over both sides will regret that it ever came to this pass, and they will blame foreigners for stirring it up and then backing out and letting the Ukrainians take the battering – it has happened this way before.

Identity politics plays a big part in our current Parliament and our public sector. Embedded actually, not much mood for change apparent.

Meanwhile identity based policies, and funding, has just taken a palpable hit following that election. Possibly a sea change.

Could it happen here in local body elections next year? And 2026. I’m picking timidly bigger waves breaking on the shoreline is more likely.

  Don’t see it happening. NZ is too far gone. Most political parties are for the status quo. Majority of voters are lefties or mushy centrists. Councils are all so left-wing most voters don’t bother. Many of the types who could swing the country politically right fly westwards instead. The continuous deluge of immigrants who love our welfare state mostly vote for bigger government and more handouts. It’ll be a sad day for me when I leave my home for good.

Time for a citizen referendum with proper education and understanding of the long term issues to reverse all this and save the women and children.

So the Electricity Authority is concerned that a lack of hedging products may disadvantage electricity customers in the form of higher prices. While there is hedging available to cover most circumstances, unsurprisingly there is no hedging available to cover low chance events such as low hydro lakes and lack of gas, wind and sun. Such hedging would require access to a deep level of risk capital, something which smaller retailers do not have access to. The ‘gentailers’ do simply by virtue of there significant capital bases in the form of generation plant. To illustrate this, Manawai Power (formerly Trustpower, now just a generation company) has taken a significant hit in its latest financials since it could not supply the power it contracted to sell so had to buy top-up power at sky high prices to meet its contractual obligations. Manawai is not complaining since this is par for the course in the business. The smaller pure retailers potentially face wipe-out in similar cases, cannot hedge (since there is no suitable hedging products on the market) so lobby for the ‘gentailers’ to be forced to provide such hedging at little or no cost. Assuming deep hedging products were available (similar to Swiss re-insurance or Lloyds underwriting) the annual ‘premiums’ would make the operation of the smaller pure retailers less economic or even untenable.
So the Electricity Authority is dancing the head of a pin trying to please all of the people all of the time.

  As we all know, when consumption exceeds production, production has to increase. In the case of electricity, it is production capacity that has to increase, to not only match consumption, but to have an abundant surplus to meet the most demanding circumstances.
  
  And to cater to demanding circumstances, said capacity has to be available 24/7. And any capacity that is scalable to meet demand, is the most cost effective.
  
  Solar and Wind don’t cut it, but Hydro does. (As does Nuclear.)
  
  Need more power, we’ll just put more water through the penstocks.
  
  Instead of faffing around playing games, the Electricity Authority should be advocating more hydro (and/or nuclear).
  
  Hydro done correctly, is the least polluting, most sustainable of energy production compared to solar or wind, and the one that results in lower prices for customers. The next level up in efficiency and cost is nuclear.

    But don’t kid yourself it’s cheap.
    
    The existing large hydro stations will never pay back the costs building them let alone maintenance and ops and cost of capital. Levelised lifetime costs ranged from 15c/kwh to over 20c as calculated at the time. The wholesale price hasn’t reached that 50 years on from the build.

      Your assumptions are several orders of magnitude out. Hydro is very cost effective.
      
      Annual hydro production for 2023 was 26.3 thousand Gigawatt hours. That is 26.3 Terrawatt hours.
      
      Based on your capital cost of $0.20c KWhr, equates to $5.26 Billion.
      
      Amortised over 40 years, and being govt financed without interest, that equates to a capital cost of $209 Billion. The cost of the Clyde Dam, the most ambitious scheme was only $2.8Bn.
      
      The total value of the hydro schemes assets, as at June 30th 2024, was $23 Billion.
      
      Value of assets is quite different to costs of constructing assets.
      
      I think you will find many (earlier) hydro schemes have long since “paid off” their capital costs.

    The main gentailers are up to the challenge but there are wrinkles. These gentailers and Manawai (which is a pure generator) all have programmes to build capacity to meet increasing demand. However they will only commit to actual construction if they are reasonably sure of selling the product. If they build too late they face a possible shortfall in supplying their customers and contracts. If they build too early they have to pay interest (or their shareholders forgo dividends) on the idle capital tied up in underutilised generation. So they operate on a knife-edge. This is the whole stuff of doing business in this game, something which many commentators and others do not seem to understand. If say the Electricity Authority, Government etc decree that electric generators are to provide a particular margin, the issue becomes who pays the cost of capital to meet this margin. The two options are:
    1. The end customers meet the cost of providing this margin through increased tariffs or a Government mandated levy directly on customers or on customers via the generators.
    2. The long suffering taxpayer meets the cost of providing this margin. If the Government wants to avoid the taxpayer paying out, then see 1. above.
    The proposed (and abandoned) Lake Onslow project was a good example of this. The previous Government were very warm to this suggesting that it was a good idea and implying the Government (ie taxpayer) would find it (Robbo and co assumed the Government had a bottomless pit of money). Sure as eggs when completed the Government would want a return on the investment and charge the industry (ie the end customer) accordingly.
    In the old days the Government took the sovereign risk involved with building power stations which was acceptable as construction and demand increases were roughly in step. But starting in the 1970’s the usual 7% per annum increase in demand started slumping and overbuilding occurred. So Roger Douglas, Richard Prebble and co rightfully asked why is the Government taking this commercial risk. Surely it would be better for private enterprise to take this risk. So this is essentially what we have today.
    Personally I think the system is doing what was intended despite much wailing and gnashing of teeth to the contrary.

Even among those who enter A+ there would be a small number of inevitable dropouts for one reason or another such as mental health issues, serious breach of discipline (eg a student facilitating a boyfriend to be in an operating theatre unlawfully – happened at Wellington Hospital some years ago and student was banned from Wellington and Hutt Hospitals which would make degree completion impossible), student deciding they were not suited to be a doctor (so transfers to a lesser health science degree), failure to be accepted to clinical school of choice (university tries to accommodate wishes as much as possible but has to balance the numbers in the end) etc etc. So most dropouts would be unpredictable at start of second year.
    Also it is extremely unlikely that there is any real correlation between first year health science grades and the ‘quality’ of a graduated doctor. A A+ doctor could have a grumpy bedside manner while a B+ doctor could turn out to be a top surgeon (eg could have been an exceptionally good model maker as a hobby).

IMO one of the lessons will be that people have a breaking point when it comes to gas lighting.

Being told that the “border is secure”. Yes the Haitians were really eating the cats and dogs.

Being told that late term abortion is about “reproductive health”. Well no. The choice and safety of birth control has never been as great as today.

Being told that amputating the breasts of teenagers is “gender affirming care”.

Finally being told that you are garbage and that Trump is a Nazi. That was a big mistake. 😄

So he wants to go do something with his hands, where he can create and build, where there is no HR department.

  My opinion is future historians will examine the broad sweep of recent history and conclude Trump’s victory is not an aberration but is part of an incoming tide where people are reacting to the socialism free trial period of the Obama/Biden/Ardern years.
  
  The promises and dreams of socialism were replaced by the cold reality of socialism — the state controlled media, the corrosive crime, the cost of living, the reduction in freedoms, being lectured to and being told what to do and think. Every promise of socialism was broken. There was a resulting loss of faith in the overall “system” and the wisdom of elites.
  
  But, but equity! The women who voted in drives for Clinton and Obama are now mothers. They see their sons being penalised by woke quotas getting into med school. They see their daughters sharing gym showers with men. They saw their husbands losing their jobs because of their private beliefs.
  People across the country could see only the elites benefitted at the expense of the “squeezed middle”. People started to behave like in Soviet Russia – secretly listening to non-state media and sarcastically calling the elites “Oligarchs” or changing “Democrat” to “Aristocrat”. And the greatest revelation of all — They Lied!
  
  So, to misquote Obama — “The MAGA movement is on the right tide of history”.

  All comes down to Humpty-Dumpty’s philosophy on the meaning of words again. Whether something is misinformation or disinformation is all in the eye of the beholder. So the courts would have to end up adjudicating what is misinformation or disinformation. The UK Court of Appeal effectively ruled in the Chiropractors case that this was not really for the courts to decide (UK chiropractors unsuccessfully sued the writer Simon Singh for defamation for effectively claiming that chiropractic was quackery. So the NZ Herald & Stuff are starting to take a more balanced stance on the Tom Phillips situation, by finally printing a bit of the other side, with a quote from Tom’s father Neville, where he highlights the unbalanced reporting so far:

“There’s one conclusion,” Neville Phillips told Stuff from his King Country home.

“Just leave [Tom] alone, walk away.”

The whole thing was “a rort right from the beginning”, Neville Phillips told Stuff.

“So we’ve just got to stop it somehow.”

He claimed police and the media had lied about aspects of the incident, and also criticised reporting on matters before the Family Court.

Police have previously said they believe the reason Phillips was on the run with his kids was to do with a custody battle.

“Do you have any idea what it’s like being a parent with what’s coming out in the media and very little of it is the truth?” Neville Phillips asked Stuff.

“There’s two sides to the story, and only one is coming out.”

  So Phillips just gets off scot free for the crimes he has committed, and the ones he has allegedly committed? Can I also rob a bank and then hide out in the bush and say “please leave me alone”? Can I steal someones ute and ‘just be left alone’? Can I abduct my kids if I don’t want them to be with their mother, and should I “just be left alone” if I do so?
  Why does Tom Phillips have the right to allegedly rob a bank and ‘just be left alone’? What does robbing a bank have to do with hiding out on the bush with a rifle and your kids? Should we not treat all alleged criminals the same way? Why arrest and prosecute any alleged criminal? Surely they also should be ‘just left alone’. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    1. The accusations against Tom are just that, accusations at this stage,
    2. The guy has been under attack from “the system”, which for an individual can be impossible to deal with,
    3. He needs to be dealt with in a different way than at present, with actions of “the system” being taken into account, and they also “punished” to the same degree you are wishing upon Tom,
    4. Now the “other side” of the story is starting to come out, I hope a more balanced view begins to be seen, and a solution found. There will need to be compromises, and I hope there are some in the Police fold that realise the longer this goes on it will just reflect badly on them. Being seen as the muscle men for extreme left wing social engineers is not a good look in the current climate.
    
    I sure hope that some common sense gets exercised, instead of the lynch mob mentality driven by the narrative fed by the police and social agencies to the media.

There is something seriously wrong with this guy, yet nobody calls him out on it. He always draws Seymour as this tiny rodent-like figure, this time holding the leash of an enormous vicious dog with ‘Treaty Principles Bill’ on its collar, a dog which is ripping its way through ‘Te Tiriti O Waitangi.’
What a country we are living in, where the media is so warped and biased and fairness and decency are nowhere to be. Is democracy and debate such a threat that the Leftists must behave this way with absolutely no checks and balances upon them?

Laws man on trail of payments to iwi …

The Otago Regional Council has committed more than $5 million to Ngai Tahu in what councillor Michael Laws suggests are not publicly disclosed payments.

Now the former National and NZ First MP’s keen to find out how much other regional councils are paying local tribes. Laws, who lives in Cromwell, is in his eighth year on the Otago Regional Council.

On the online media outlet, The Platform, Laws says he’s been increasingly concerned he was getting insufficient information on council long-term plans, so he used the local government version of the Official Information Act to ask how much the regional council had paid to local tribal authorities – to Ngai Tahu.

“There was nothing in any of the information that was publicly available, or to me as an elected member that itemised that.”

Laws says from the inquiry he learned of contracts totalling more than $5 million between the council and “local iwi”. The information was in no publication the Otago Regional Council put out.
