    NZ First will do their best to block the Moaorifaction of everything. But how many seats will determine how far they can take it. If they’re the third biggest party, then they can only hold back the gates. If they’re the second biggest party in the coalition then they can have a lot more sway.
    
    My view is the Maori Party will be in kingmaker position. There are some people on this site that think we need to have a Labour-Greens-Maori Government to wake up the people to vote for actual change.

  Some years back B National-ACT-Maori could have been a real possibility. The Maori Party was a more reasonable back then and National MP Tim Groser (a former highly skilled trade negotiator) said he considered he could help negotiate a coalition with the Maori Party. I doubt he would have similar optimism with regard to the present TPM.
  Labour will never go with ACT and Greens will never go with National (this is party policy which could only be overturned at a General Meeting).

US judge temporarily blocks Musk’s DOGE from accessing payment systems

US District Judge Paul Engelmayer in Manhattan issued the order after a coalition of 19 mostly Democratic-led US states filed a lawsuit late Friday arguing Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has no legal power to access the US Department of Treasury systems.

Are the plaintiffs actually more concerned that the kid geniuses in DOGE might find (some more) ‘interesting’ payments? Or maybe they are just grumpy, because reasons. Should be easy enough for existing Department of Treasury analyst groups to be expanded in the meantime to include new employees and new technology. While cases wind their way through the system.

    In USA, District Courts are federal courts, not state courts. They seem to operate at two levels – District Judges who are equivalent to our High Court judges and Magistrate-Judges who are like our District Court Judges and High Court Associate judges.

  The new boss of the US Treasury just did that. Two new employees of DOGE were already Treasury people.
  
  End of the issue and more of this:
  
  In the past 48 hours, HHS canceled 62 contract worth $182 million. These contracts were entirely for administrative expenses – none touched any healthcare programs. This included terminating a $168,000 contract for an Anthony Fauci exhibit at the NIH Museum.
  
  Also, Congress illegally spent at least $516 billion in 2024 on programs for which there was no authorization. That was reported by the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) last year and nothing to do with DOGE but it means there likely is vastly greater amounts of shite like it under the surface.

      David Sacks on All-In said it was $1 billion per WEEK for 40 years under various presidents. A billion US dollars is a lot of money to spend in 7 days, assuming they worked weekends, which i doubt. Origin was with a JFK feelz law, but at some point was perverted.   This made me laugh. Trump has cancelled the security clearances of Letitia James and Alvin Bragg, the New York prosecutors who targeted Trump. They are no longer allowed to enter a Courtroom or any other Federal building.

  I find it strange that Judges in the US can override the US government by banning government actions or policies that the Judges dont like. A Judge has just banned all political appointees from accessing Dept of Treasury data. It means the Secretary of the Treasury cannot access Departmental data, but his employees can. That’s bizarre.

    It’s simply the first step in the process of appealing a decision up through their court system and it’s not a “ban”; a “stay / injunction / restraining order merely says to the side taking action that there has been an objection and action should stop while things are thrashed out. Pretty common in the US but the problem is judge shopping. As I recall from Trump 1.0 one of his Federal actions was stayed by a judge in Hawaii!
    
    One funny aspect of all the Inspector Generals being fired by Trump was that they were reluctant to appeal to the courts in case they lost and in doing so handed Trump more executive power.

    BTW, we’re getting close to that point here in NZ, and we don’t have a constitution. In fact it’s one of the fights over ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill; a faction of our judges and lawyers want to be the ones defining the TOW “principles” and want no part of Parliamentary supremacy.   When you see the list of names beginning with Nga and Te you start to think the selection process for oral submissions is quite biased.
  
  It would be interesting to see the statistics of those who submitted for and against the bill compared to those chosen for oral submission.

    I think that private individuals may be less likely than organisations to want to give an oral submission. When you consider what kind of organisation may be in favour of the bill, you have Hobson’s Pledge etc. The kind of organisation against the bill is going to include every Maori trust. This will skew the list of oral submissions.

    There is fine line between Maori progress and civil unrest, especially with the despicable nz media’s: agenda driven, constant centre right persecution, and promotion of the race issue.
    
    So Luxon has to tread carefully and steadily….. he does have a plan, it started with abolition of cogovernance and gangs, but has much further to go.
    
    The race issue isn’t as big a deal now as people on kiwblog like to make it. Adern used race to funnel money to the maori kings family, and to distract you whilst she achieved nothing and lined her pockets with your cash. Luxon has trashed aderns racial smoke bombs and self enrichment programes.

    However we have a significant enduring Maori problem which has negative effects on everyone.
    
    Gangs and drugs are a symptom of the problem. Crime, benefit dependence, victimization, and family violenc run rife in the Maori community.
    
    Whilst I believe genetics plays a large part (pre european, only the most violent Maori survived and bred, and there was no evolutionary need for Maori to lead long healthy lives as they were typically dead by 20), the Dunedin study discovered the cycle of crime can be broken if children are placed in the right environment, wrap around services have been tried, they work, and are being rolled out by Luxon et al as we speak..
    
    Opportunity is also important, people without opportunity tend towards violence to get their hands on the things the people with opportunity have…. so investing in Maori organisations wisely, with controls and monitoring, has upsides for all of us.
    
    If you’d like to see what happens when you don’t invest in the under privileged, go for a walk through chicago or johannesburg.

      A week later in QT he stated the Treaty was a partnership covering a number of things and had been for 184 years.

      I will be happy to support that when:
      1. Race isn’t used for selection criteria for higher education eg med schools etc
      2. Disproportionate amounts of scholarships and grants are made on the basis of race
      3. Race doesn’t factor into selection for roles in the performing arts
      4. Iwi pay tax on profits
      5. We don’t fund race based tv or radio stations
      6. Matauranga maori isn’t given equivalence to science
      7. We don’t have special consultation processes for government and local government on the basis of race
      8. Courses on TOW are replaced with balanced NZ history, values and ethics eg for new immigrants, students, etc
      
      I’m sure other KB contributors can add to this list.

        That said….. I know a bit about medical school selection so I steer clear of Maori Doctors.

      How can you expect anyone to believe you if you come out with statements like that? Maorification and DEI are all-pervasive, and are a serious threat to the functionality of our institutions. Of course genuine Maori grievances must be taken seriously, and as you say, governments must invest in evidence-based programs to help the underprivileged – any sensible person supports such efforts. But how are Maori are being helped by the pretence that maatauranga belongs in 21st century science classes? Or by pretending that knowledge of Te Ao Maori and tikanga trumps knowledge of actual modern water management when Wellington Water are choosing a new CEO (see the article posted this morning on Kiwiblog). My sister works overseas in a specialized field of medicine, and was recently considering a return to NZ. A phone conversation with the head of her field in the Wellington area was enough to put her off the idea, as her interlocutor was plainly a diversity hire whose knowledge and skills were not up to the role. Maorification and DEI are undermining our institutions, and have nothing to do with helping the underprivileged.

      In many cities around the world, no or very limited investment in the “”under privileged”” (whatever that means).
      
      Said Cities are safe and work well.
      I submit examples in Cambodia.
      
      Where strong Family values and limited government intrusion in daily lives generates a strong self-sufficiency ethos and community involvement in limiting crime & bad behaviour.
      
      I feel safer walking around the streets of Phnom Penh at 2am than I do walking around the streets of Tauranga at 9pm.
      
      IMHO, nothing to do with investing in under privileged?.

        `As the chairperson has noted, final number of submissions, including the number of submissions to be returned, is yet to be determined as submissions are still being processed.
        
        Information about the number of submissions in favour or opposed to a bill is usually released when the select committee makes its final report to Parliament. The reporting deadline for this bill is 14 May 2025.’
        
        I actually followed up last week and so far no response.
        
        They must be counting with their fingers and toes or else they have got a result they prefer not to disclose.

Damien Grant, in Stuff, at his very best, penetrating, derisory, mocking the faux seriousness of the Real Estate Agents Authority in banning Janet Dickson. What pompous toads. The amount of feigning and insincerity is sickening. It is not just the humbug and over-reach of authority; it is the reality that Māori and the rest of us are not helped, not wiser, not more competent nor better citizens as a result of going through a course on Māori issues.

In fact, having talked to a couple of agents who did the course and who were laughing and insulting of the whole idea, it has only served to divide us more, cheapen genuine efforts to improve race relations and fostered contempt toward those in authority. The other 15 thousand odd agents who have kept their head down and mumbled their way around this arrogance and mealy mouthed pretension need to grow a pair and demand accountability and genuineness.

It would be safe to say most of those voters, misguided or not, are voting for an overthrow of our current form of government. They are aided and abetted by white academic activists wearing pounamu necklaces and most of the media.         Albie, I agree with you. If you add the number of Maori who voted for the Jew hating Greens you might get 5%. However, look at the number of Maori who voted for Act and NZF you might get 5%.

    Hilarious as hell. Run by 2 POMs spouting the usual Colonial oppression crap. Another Senior Council member and I walked out at the first lunch.
    
    When asked by the Chairwoman why we didnt stay(very liberal white lady). She got educated on what a waste of time it was.

  There is a proposed policy from the Left block that I am sure the media will mostly keep hidden from the public. The policy is that Iwi will have first option on all private land sales. Will land include all residential property sales? If this comes to pass real estate agents definitely will need to understand the Maori way. My concern is what happens when Maori want your land and they have a different valuation system to yours.

  You pretty much can’t sell a property without using a law firm so why are we further regulating the people that market them?

  Speaking as someone who has been involved in training in the past, this issue is also about income streams for not very qualified Maori trainers. I have experience of working with some of these in a non-training environment. The opportunity to pork the bill is enormous, and yet modern technology provides an even better opportunities to cut costs. A similar rort to ‘cultural adviser’ which is a way of getting more taxpayer dollars than you would have done on the bene.

  Whale song for Kauri, ‘science’ funding, Creative NZ funding, PIJF, current versions of the Provincial Growth Fund, quangos for Africa and hundred of Maori, Pacific and other ‘community support’ projects and programmes – all a forcible confiscation of the wealth of New Zealanders by political parties and given to communities they favour and in return for their political allegiance.
  
  It’ll be billions annually. All of questionable value, except for the donors and the donees.

I see that the once-royal New Zealand Herald once again shows it thinks the jury got it wrong.
In 2022 – the once-royal etc has ‘discovered’ (well, that’s a change from ‘the Herald can reveal …’) David Seymour wrote a letter outlining a constituent’s concerns about a police investigation.
The constituent was Dr Philip Polkinghorne, whose wife was found dead in their house.
Carolyn Meng-yee of the Herald is trying to find something untoward in this letter.
Perhaps there’s also an attempt to smear a politician who is upsetting the Establishment with his Treaty Principles Bill, which luminary journalists such as Audrey Young, and Claire Trevett use their platforms to oppose.
Look: I know my memory is getting worse, and so perhaps is my grip on reality, but I seem to recall that Dr Polkinghorne was found not guilty of killing his wife.
The last sentence in the story this morning said that Dr Polkinghorne did not wish to comment.
Very wise. I wouldn’t, either. Give them no oxygen.

      Not necessarily.
      
      There are multiple ISPs involved, the two main ISP in the equation are:
      1) The local ISP you use to access the internet. All your traffic goes through that so if one site you are accessing is fast and another is slow then this is not the problem.
      2) The ISP running the servers etc. In this case AFAIK kiwiblog runs on wordpress and I am not sure where they are hosting from.
      
      Kiwiblog is just one of thousands of sites running on wordpress or similar servers (ie. one server runs potentially hundreds or thousands of web sites). Quite possibly they are all suffering the same throttling.

    I see he’s proposing 120kmh in some unspecified places. It’s already a de facto 120 limit on the 110k roads. There is a significant number of drivers who struggle at 110, or who drive at 80k on those roads.

  Sub-Saharan Africa has gone from a net food producer to a net food importer in the space of 40 years. Some of that is due to a tripling of the population, but the vast majority is due to the slump in output. And no, climate change is not to blame.

      In other words he can’t pull out if he’s not in.

Widow applies to MSD for $2,000 plus for husband’s funeral/tangi, of which $1,000 is for food. MSD declines the food grant. Woman appealed the decision, first to a Benefit Review Committee, which agreed with MSD, and then to the Social Security Appeal Authority, which has now come down in her favour ,deciding that MSD was wrong to turn her down, and that the place of food in Māori custom is “more than just a meal” and is an essential ritual in the tangihanga process therefore this made it a reasonable expense in terms of applying for a funeral grant. The flood gate just opened. Irish applicants and the Guinness company (Diageo) will be delighted. My own culture regards any function without a generous supply of the Spey’s water to be unacceptable. Preferably Macallan at $110 a bottle. Slàinte Mhath! NZ is in the hands of lunatics.

All races or cultures place significance on kai in tangihanga, and in hospitality post the burial. Maori practice here is not unique, nor any more special than any other race or culture.

I saw a copy of the Herald at the cafe and since there were no gloves or tongs handy, I had to pick up the leftist propaganda rag with my bare hands. I too noted the hit pieces on Seymour and ACT, the desperation to smear him and the party, and the pitiful cartoon by the unhinged leftist Emmerson. Contrast the left wing hit jobs regarding Jago – who committed offences 2 decades ago and was never an MP – to the empathy and positive bias shown in the coverage of the numerous miscreant MP’s within the Greens and Labour.
  The desire of the Left and the establishment to cancel and destroy Seymour and ACT is astonishing in its vehemence. Seymour won’t toe the line, he won’t bow to the establishment, he is seen as such a threat that he has to be destroyed. Absolutely sickening.

    Putting food on the table and providing for one’s families other essential needs is the minimum requirement for parenting. Being a provider is also a great source of satisfaction.
    
    Putting this in the hands of the state, without any contribution from parents is just the ongoing Marxist creep. It would be better if there was a deduction from benefits or wages to supply all meals including school lunch with my food box or hello fresh type suppliers. At least that way food would be prioritised plus there could be some choice, as well as education on healthy eating and food preparation and satisfaction in the creation of your own meal. If parents are too dysfunctional to make that work then it isn’t in the children’s interests to be in those environments.
    
    Seymour as Minister in charge should be saying step 1 was reduction in cost of supply of lunches but step 2 will be about putting the power back into families hands.

She will campaign on water investment, social housing and apartment conversions and the Golden Mile project.

Great she’s highlighting water investment, though the performance to date has been woeful. In any case Wellington Water is “independent” so what does that actually mean?

Social housing means more beggars on LQ and more assaults and drunks at Te Aro Park.

Who would buy an apartment in Wellington? The NBS changes every year, rendering your building non compliant and an expensive lemon.

  I don’t support the Bill as it stands but agree with the intent. We need to ensure that there is only 1 class of citizens. So why wouldn’t I never vote for ACT. First, they are anti-life with very pro abortion and of course putting down old people. Second, there extreme LBGTI++ agenda as we saw with Brooke van Velden allowing the delusion of putting two same sex parents as parents on children’s birth certificates as well as other nonsense.
  Now, that’s probably a minority of NZers but the main reason it’s probably David Seymour himself. He comes across as smug and arrogant and not at all likeable. Because really ACT should be so much better.

    1. Banning abortion is just not a goer. I am generally pro-life, but there are sufficient circumstances under which an abortion is reasonable that I would not support a ban.
    
    Having said that, just be honest about what you’re doing. Killing an unborn child. Certain groups make more noise about what happens to dairy cow pregnancies than human pregnancies.
    
    2. We allow same sex marriage. We allow same sex couples to have or adopt children. Birth certificate details are an obvious consequence of that. If you want to stop the birth certificate thing, you have to ban the other two. Good luck with that.
    
    3. David Seymour looking smug, I can see how you’d think that. But how do you think he should react when he’s constantly told to defend the statement that the TPB is racist? Get defensive? That’s not going to work.

  Rusted on National supporters who are used to saying how marvellous their team are doing whenever they are back in power, regardless of the actual facts. Key has largely been discredited now, the ‘rockstar economy’ was largely the same low interest rates / high immigration scam we are all now familiar with. Only difference was foreign money would still invest here. Since Key signed us up to UNDRIP and started the co-governance ball rolling, it is obvious he has helped manufacture a hospital pass for his disciple Luxon. Foreign investors won’t want a bar of this place. National die-hards are obstinately prepared to go down with a sinking ship, National demonstrably just defends the status quo and is uninterested in meaningful change.

    I didn’t party vote for National at the last election and I never saw the attraction of John Key. And I will probably never vote for National again.
    There is no connection between the unlikeablility of Seymour and the very clear faults of Luxon. I’m not sure why I guy so many downticks for my opinion – it’s my opinion. I gave why I wouldn’t vote for ACT – that’s a fact. Clearly, they are not cutting through to the population. The question is why? If it’s not the leader then what?

    They are pushing water uphill.
    Only an absolute idiot would invest in a country with a RMA industry choking out growth and killing private property rights
    Add this to a country that is rapidly going down a separatist route ,with dubious Maori historic claims on land and water a usual part of business in NZ.
    Demanding any land they may want== and mostly getting it!
    We have a government history of making “ captains calls” with no regard for existing investment (Marsden point)
    The facts are clear NZ is an unwise investment!

The cost of the coffee portion of a flat white is about 25-30 cents. How does in increase in this tiny portion of the overall cost contribute to an almost 30% rise in the cost of the final product from 7 bucks to 10. This is a good way to put yourself out of business and then Blame someone else (the government most probably).

    Oh we use about 20c worth of milk a weekend.

        One coffee = 14gm of beans. 71 cups per 1kg of coffee. High quality beans cost 25 bucks. I getwine from Australia. We get ripped off here and the beans are not that good for the price. Put another way, a cafe is going to try sting you 710 dollars to make 71 coffees when the input costs for the coffee part are 25 bucks. Obviously there is milk involved sometimes and 5 minutes of labour. But anyway.

      At around 15 to 20 g of coffee per cup (let’s be generous and call that 20g), 1kg of beans should give 50 cups.
      
      200g costs around $8 at a supermarket and should give you 10 cups ie 80 cents each. Flash coffee from a specialty roaster is maybe twice that $1.60 per cup.
      
      Even if they are using the flashest coffee beans, a coffee shop won’t be paying retail and will be paying less than $1 per cup.
      
      Of that, only a very small part is the raw beans that are which are going up in price. Those have increased from around $NZ9/kg to around $NZ12/kg.
      
      That equates to around 20 cents to around 25 cents per cup – ie an extra 5 cents per cup.
      
      Of course the whole supply chain will use this to drive up their prices: roasters will, bean suppliers will and coffee shops will – despite their costs only going up very slightly.
      
      The majority of the costs for the roaster are not the beans themselves, but rather other costs (and profit). The further you go up the chain the less the actual cost of raw beans should matter.

Now they’re trying to make something out of David Seymour’s letter to the police – three years ago, before the man was charge – complaining of various matters.
