        That’s a purely economic perspective. What about the rapid demographic changes and associated lessening of social cohesion and lowering of trust which accompanies high levels of demographic diversity?

        So the bi-partisan policy is to “embrace using immigration policy to maintain population growth and address labor shortages.”
        
        First, why do we need to maintain population growth? And isn’t a growing population a driver of labor shortages? The maintenance of population growth seems to be the driver of flow-on effects that “require” more immigration to fix. If we didn’t have such high levels of immigration, we wouldn’t need to fix the problems the policy causes (and it is a policy choice, not an immutable law of nature).
        
        “The country’s 1.4 million immigrants accounted for 29 percent of New Zealand’s 5 million people as of 2023. The top countries of origin were England (208,400 people, or approximately 14 percent of the foreign born), China (145,400, or 10 percent), India (142,900 or 10 percent), the Philippines (99,300, or 7 percent), South Africa (95,600, or 7 percent), and Australia (86,000, or 6 percent).”
        
        So 1/3 of people in the country weren’t even born here. That is quite staggering, really.
        
        China, India and the Philippines (i.e. non-White nations) account for a combined 27%; moreover, it is a fair expectation that many of the “English” “Australian” and “South African” arrivals will also be non-White (particularly the first two categories), who have first moved to England and Australia, and then on to New Zealand.
        
        New Zealand’s demographics have been radically and very noticeably altered in even the last 20 or 25 years. On these trends, imagine another 20, 25, 50 or, God forbid, 100 years from now.

        As I point out elsewhere here today, why isn’t China falling over thenselves to bring in all the alleged Indian tech gurus we are told we need in the West?
        
        Is it because a) Indians are no better at tech than anyone else, and perhaps are even inferior, so the Chinese see no benefit in importing them, and b) China puts China and Chinese first (refer to the previous point), mainly because China is run by Chinese rather than a hostile elite who are actively trying to harm the European nations of the West through replacement migration.

    In a way, they did “democratize” software development, in as much as a core tenet of Our Democracy is flooding the zone with as many Indians and other third worlders as possible. In this sense, what could be more “democratic” than 700 Indian tech scammers?
    
    Moreover, we can tell how superior Our Democracy is to some rival systems around the world, in that we have completely outstripped the Chinese (increasingly the world leaders in many aspects formerly dominated by Our Democracy) in the [filling the]Space Race for the world’s top third world imports.
    
    I mean, the nationalist, racist and insular Chinese have barely any third world immigration enriching society, which is clearly why we are streets ahead of them in so many ways. We get to gobble up the world’s historically disadvantaged and underrepresented, while the Chinese are forced to look on with jealousy.

  The thing I don’t get about that story, is how they could give a fast enough response. AI respond in seconds or minutes at most if they are ‘deep thinking’
  Customer service takes forever days, so if that was the case, Builder.AI sounds like they actually have a decent business model.

        Even if it got hotter for the next 50 years that would tell us nothing. We’ve only had reliable global temp data (via satellites) for the last approx 40 years. Prior to that temp stations were too sparse across the globe (and immensely more so sparse across the oceans which cover just under 70% of the earth’s surface) and the temp station life-spans were also too erratic. Temp stations were also placed in ever worsening “urban heat islands” (heat absorbing and heat emitting concrete jungles basically) so that temp rises represented urban growth rather than real natural temp rises.

And in other breaking news, winter has arrived in New Zealand. The fact that it gets cold during winter, that there can be snow on alpine roads and that southerly storms break out from sub Antarctic waters has completely missed the media who are desperately reporting the cold weather as some sort of aberration rather than an annual event.

It’s ok media, those of us who have been around longer than you petals have seen it all before, it will be ok. Just pop away to your safe rooms, pull those blankies up over your heads, read Jacinda’s novel and it will be gone in a couple of days.

    Go back to the 90s there was going to be no snow by 2020, the climate scam is getting weaker and weaker and the fact that billions of tons more ice formed at Antarctica has started to make people not believe. I have noticed at St Clair beach the sea no longer throws sea water onto the Esplanade as it did about 5 years ago, the serve wind we had down here last weekend did not have much impact either, 5 years ago there was photos in the paper of huge pounding on the wall throwing sea water onto the esplanade, I have noticed seen or heard of it for some time

300,000 free Wellington bus trips promised by Labour’s Andrew Little, Labour’s Daran Ponter and Labour’s Tom James – all hoping to be elected this year.

More buses and drivers needed, unsurprisingly. Is a pattern emerging? I couldn’t possibly comment.

Mr Little suggests commuters would get 20% of their weekday trips free. Since most of them will be travelling in peak hours, would an additional 20% of new buses and drivers be required. Lots of peak hour jobs for drivers, and good luck finding them. What happens to those buses, and drivers, for the other 20 odd hours a day?

Let us see a proper business case, chaps, with realistic assumptions including around no extra cost to ratepayers. Not fairy tales to get votes.

    That is too cumbersome. The 1900 Federation agreement provides for NZ to become part of Australia if desired. NZ and Fiji were part of the Federation meetings at the time but then decided to opt out of Federation but the door was left open.
    Also NZ was also part of NSW in early years.

  The story is a beat up. The 5Ghz band is an unlicensed block of spectrum which is available for anyone to use.
  
  The major networks utilize licensed spectrum which is legally protected from interference (the spectrum owner effectively has exclusivity). As far as I am aware no operator of licensed spectrum equipment was disturbed by the Canberra.
  
  If Harrison was operating in licensed spectrum his company would have a valid legal claim against whoever disturbed his network. However as he is operating in the unlicensed block it is not possible to make this claim.

I was thinking about the 18 year olds born without NZ citizenship. Their parents will have been overstayers for a couple of decades or more. Clearly, the families are not living on thin air; nor receiving remittances from overseas (likely the reverse); yet we are told that undocumented migrants cannot legally work. It follows that they are working illegally. I surmise that it’s highly likely that they are working within their ethnic communities. It’s as likely that they are being exploited by their employers and are not paying tax.

Estimates of overstayer numbers run to hundreds of thousands. The fact that so little hits the headlines tells you that there’s an ethnic omertà at work. Clearly, migrants from those communities with NZ citizenship must know of illegals, but you don’t hear about the legals dobbing the illegals in. This illustrates that when push comes to shove, the legals’ loyalties lie with their country of origin and not with NZ. Employers too are happy to exploit their former compatriots.

My question is, why are IRD and Immigration not all over these breached of our laws? Where are the investigative journalists (Paula Penfold, this is a much bigger story than a former Stuff reporter with some dodgy recordings on his phone)? Winston, how about a bit of work in this area from you?

    Don’t be too sure about that. The 14k estimate dates to 2017.
    
    In a related story, Immigration NZ said that their estimate (of 1,000 child overstayers) is unreliable. By definition, if INZ cannot estimate the number of children then they cannot estimate the number of overstayers in total either. Given that these numbers are 8 years old, most of which years featured heavy migration from the third world, the real number is likely much, much higher.

      I can tell you what we can be sure of, there aren’t hundreds of thousands of overstayers. You’ve made up a number that is just nowhere near reality.
      
      BTW, we live in a country where we don’t get boat people, no one can cross our boarders without coming in through official channels and documenting their arrival. So yes we can get a close number of how many people have overstayed

      There are also the forgotten children of legitimate immigrants from the 1950’s. Their parents were granted residency and would have later gained citizenship. Due to a bureaucratic blunder these kids (who entered NZ on their parents’ passports) were never granted residency and were left in limbo meaning they cannot obtain NZ passports and are subject to 501 style deportation. Hope Immigration is sorting out these cases and granting residency which should have happened when the kids first arrived in NZ.

    When I applied for NZ Super Immigration knew exactly when I’d been in and out of the country and even the flight numbers
    I’m guessing here, but if they knew for me they know for everyone and know exactly who has overstayed their visas
    It’s not like some countries where people can jump a wall or wade a river
    The issue isn’t known how many and who they are it’s finding them.

Someone wrote a Stuff article purporting to be an analysis of the Privileges Committee findings against Te Pati Māori. It was an incredibly weak effort. If that is the standard of analytical journalism in this country God help us. It wasn’t just that it was biased and left out the key reasons for the findings but the commentary was pathetic. There was no depth, no penetrative conclusions, no research of key elements of the story.

Stuff wouldn’t know ‘analytical journalism’ if fell over it on the street in broad daylight.

It is sad how low the MSM has stooped. A strong, mature and capable media is vital to the well being of democracy.

      White people vastly outnumber Maori, and so, if we collectivised in our own interests (or against Maori interests that a deleterious to us), the Maori agenda would be dead in the water.
      
      Why don’t we, then? Because we have been propagandised into the belief that, White people uniquely, don’t have – and shouldn’t have – a group identity and therefore group interest. Everyone else does, of course (and we are bringing them here in large numbers to live amongst us “individuals”), but when White people celebrate their collective, they are Nazis (yes, it always comes back to them – for some reason).
      
      Rather than expressing cohesion and racial solidarity, however, there is this idea that Maori stop acting in their group interests, that we can just make racial divisions go away, and that “we’re all, like, basically equal, maaannn!”
      
      This is delusional thinking that denies how humans naturally coalesce along the lines of shared similarity and sameness, particularly as, increasingly, we are being transformed into a multi-racial society.

  Inherent in concept of “democracy” is the ability to brainwash people (i.e. drive opinion in a way that benefits those in charge, and opinions are what determine how people vote). Democracy is a euphemism for rule-through-media, or rather, rule-by-media-owners. In other words, minds are busily being shaped at all times, and then people go out and tick a box every few years to validate the ways in which their minds have been shaped.
  
  If people’s opinions couldn’t be manipulated and channeled in particular directions, there’d be no need to have what we call a “democracy.”

  You should have read the full Joel Maxwell article. I read the total article it was a fair article. Where I and many others have difficulty with the decision to suspend the TPM members was the length of the suspension. Yes suspension was fair but three weeks when the previous longest suspension was only 3 days. This 3 week suspension reeks of vengeance. Big Master telling the natives to get in line. Totally unnecessary. Its given TPM martyr status that will be used time and time again. This and the equity debacle will come back to bite National. Luxon has continued to show a complete lack of leadership and is being led by the nose by his fellow coalition partner. Yes Labour in a similar position. What a choice we have !!!     Three days for criticising the speaker in a press statement, not in the house, not in the debating chamber, not during a vote.
    
    Those members of the Mazi Party were in the house, in the debating chamber, during a vote, disrupted the vote without the permission of the speaker, came onto the floor and simulated shooting ACT members in the head with a gun gesture.
