Yet another immigration rort. Aged 23 and not qualified to come to NZ? No worries, mate, just get yourself adopted. And NZ Immigration cannot do anything about it. Easy, eh.

“The dependent child category residence visa extends to the age of 24 and a “large proportion” of those adopted overseas were over the age of 18 when they were brought to New Zealand, officials said.

New Zealand-resident parents have “often” adopted more than 10 children or young adults each from overseas, said the same briefing.

While there are concerns about the nature of the adoption, the Immigration Act and relevant immigration instructions do not provide a pathway for legally declining the application.”

Some KBers ie those approaching 90, will see him as another Les Dawson. Next week we may well hear about Shane’s mother in law………………

    Yes NZF would like everyone to forget that they were part of the government that implemented the ‘captains call’ to stop gas exploration and essentially close the industry.
    
    The irony is that they have been pretty successful in rewriting history around that event.

      If Bill English had been savvy enough to give Peters a good deal Ardern wouldn’t have been prime minister in 2018 in the country’s 52nd Parliament.
      
      National remnants from the Labour stronghold of Dunedin (and Kowtow) have been whining about the “auction loss” ever since.
      
      Shane Jones right now is the champion of mining and of oil exploration. He’s also the champion of geothermal exploration, which at present provides 20 per cent of NZ’s power.
      
      Jones and Peters are demonstrating backbone in standing up to the antics of the Maori Party.
      
      It’s more important, that, for oil and gas exploration right now, Jones is the spokesman.

        Sure, Jones is good and promoting the right causes at the moment. I support almost everything he has said. As a member of this government he is rightly pointing out that Labour screwed the country.
        
        It is however very ironic when it was him and Winston that allowed the ban to take place. It would be much more appropriate to have a National or Act person leading the attacks on Labour but Shane is the Minister.
        
        Re Bill English. He was always screwed and would never have been able to negotiate with Winston. The negotiations were a farce and Winston used them to get as much out of Labour as possible. NZF were ALWAYS going with Labour. Winston also holds grudges and apparently hated Bill so that was also never going to work.

      Exactly RoboRob had NZF or more accurately Winston First had the nous to see where the Captains Call was heading for country for and withheld their support, “That Woman” intent on upgrading her creds for an upcoming talkfest her government was doomed at Step One but that did not account for the rogue obsessive intent for Winston to extract revenge on English and Bennett did it.         Winston could have stopped the captains call but chose not to for purely political reasons. The call was in the first 6mths of the new government, how would it have looked if Winston broke up the government after spending months on negotiations?
        
        Winston did the right thing for Winston and NZF. Unfortunately he did the wrong thing for the country.
        
        p.s. It is also possible that threatening to break up the government behind closed doors might have prevented the captains call ever been made in the first place.

What are the negative effects of mass immigration? Well we get loss of social cohesion. We get the 3rd world and it’s problems being imported here. For instance, how many of those refugees from Somalia have got jobs?

We get massive overcrowding. Auckland traffic is horrific. Major cities are building high rise apartments. The kiwi dream of a house and section is now unaffordable. Infrastructure in major cities like Wellington is crumbling.

But hey let’s bring in a million more people over the next 20 years because it makes our GDP figures look better!?

Look, I enjoy a curry as much as the next guy. But isn’t it time we conserved our nation and our values and our people? Isn’t it time we turned off mass immigration and valued our kiwi way of life?

    Are you referring to the 156,000 unemployed and 187,000 on the jobseeker benefit as an infrastructure problem? This is a total drag on the economy.
    This is on top of the 900,000 getting superannuation as well, but 168,000 are still working.

    Immigration may drive GDP, but it does not drive national citizen wealth.
    
    India now has the world’s third biggest economy measured by GDP, but by GDP per capita, the measure of citizen wealth, it is 152nd in the world.
    
    New Zealand’s GDP per capita is now down to 44th in the world, and that rank is slipping. High immigration will steepen the fall.
    
    With the Parliamentary term now at the beginning its second half, the health system continues to rise as a key issue.
    
    Luxon and National have now thrown in immigration into the mix.

We have an infrastructure deficit because we imported 1 million people in a short space of time and have ‘the taxes’ of those 1 million people alleviated all our problems?   Yes our infrastructure cannot cope, our health system is swamped, our roads are swamped, our schools are swamped. But it’s what the corporates, the property industry, and the banks want. It keeps wages low and they pray it will reinvigorate the property market (ponzi scheme). Yes the profits accrue to the above mentioned parties & yes all the costs are billed to the taxpayer, but ‘it’s only a rort if you are not part of it’ as they say – hence all the downticks you are getting.

    Increase productivity in NZ so infrastructure can look after the increased population or simply restrict immigration.
    Apparently neither of these options has or will be adopted.
    Economic growth is multifaceted.

  Isn’t there already concern that our aging population is placing strain on the health system? Bringing in more older people, regardless of their ability to pay either personally or by insurance, will add to the strain. We will still be short of doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, nevermind equipment such as MRI machines etc. And of course hospital beds.

  I think the fundamental issue is focusing on quantity of immigrants not quality.
  
  How many immigrants have come into NZ over last 2 decades to complete low end service jobs? How much of there income gets consumed in the NZ economy instead of being repatriated to their families back overseas? These people don’t being productive higher end skills and don’t stimulate the economy. They are effectively a net drain on the economy.
  
  Same can be said for many of the refugees who are actually just low or no skilled economic migrants.

    This is fundamentally due to the drones at immigration NZ being incompetent themselves. You would think a much needed medical specialist would get the red carpet rolled out for them but they get treated exactly the same as an uber driver. It was discovered a while back that they were misclassifying senior doctors, commonly called specialists, because they thought a specialist doctor must be something other than an ordinary senior doctor.

All the Court decisions that have now come out against her horrible government as well. All the while National backed her. Disgraceful.

      I think the point of allowing in oldies is not for the oldies themselves, but rather to get at the oldies’ children and retain them.
      
      Canada (a favourite) has a programme for sponsoring parents and even grandparents. Canada has recently relaxed some of the requirements.
      
      UK seems even easier for some and they even have a special category for people who need care to go to UK to be cared for by relatives in UK.
      
      If we want to compete then we have to make an attractive offer. That said, do we really want to compete in what looks like a race to the bottom?

      I know people who have been on the public health waiting list for hip and knee replacements for months -running into years.
      They can’t afford health insurance.

  Not really. We’re losing massive numbers of skilled people every day. There is no shortage of unskilled, or low skilled, people but there is a massive shortage of highly skilled people.
  
  Skilled people have options. They go to where they think the future looks brightest. Unfortunately NZ is not very attractive, so we have to compete in other ways if we want them to come here.
  
  I doubt that very many people will meet the criterion of arriving with $1M for investment, $500k for settlement and $60k income.
  
  As for the health insurance requirements, I wager I am not the only one thinking this will end up creating a scammy industry of dodgy medical insurance.
  
  Bottom line is that we have a problem deporting over stayers from NZ. I doubt Luxon has the stomach to put a 90 year old in a wheelchair on the flight to Mumbai because she developed cancer.

  More than 20 per cent of India’s university graduates under the age of 30 are unemployed. That’s millions of young jobless people from the middle class.
  
  In the second link a blogger says industrialisation has reduced jobs in India. Down by 9 million from 2011 to 2018, and 3.5 million lost in manufacturing.
  
  India is focusing on capital-heavy, advanced industrialisation.

      Being a rural fellow you probably don’t see it.
      
      There are significant numbers of Indians and lesser numbers of Filipinos in the IT industry. It’s not uncommon for both of the couple to be working. Skilled technically and with good work ethic.
      
      With Indians, I have seen several where the wife goes back to India on the birth of a child, in order to get help with the first year. That’s a year where the husband and wife are apart, and he doesn’t get to see his child, and sometimes children, for that time.
      
      That’s not to say there aren’t numbers of uber drivers, but it’s a disservice to say they all are.
      
      I’d be more concerned with the propensity of Indians who own bottle shops to exploit their own to the detriment of nz.

    I call BS that this is going to actually pull in significant numbers of engineers, doctors and such.
    
    Let’s be frank – there is only one part of the world with a growing demographic that generates doctors and engineers and such – the India/Pakistan area. The only other substantial part of the world that is in growth is Africa and they don’t really generate many doctors.
    
    Everywhere else has a shrinking population. Maybe we get to pull in a few people from South Africa, Taiwan or other places, but mainly this is directed at India and Pakistan.
    
    How many of them have $1M for an investment + $500k for settlement and hundreds of thousands for medical insurance? If they have that sort of money why would they pick NZ over, say Canada or Australia?
    
    I think this is going to end up being like Labour’s huge mission to try to import teachers – close to zero applicants.

  Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is the latest buzz-phrase in the renewable energy sector and if you want to be one of the cool kids then you simply must have one.
  
  In some circumstances (eg. California or whatever) they might make a bit of sense. I really don’t think they make any sense in NZ.
  
  The purpose of BESS is to take non-dispatchable renewable generation (solar and wind) surpluses, store them up, then pump them out during high demand periods when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
  
  The key to BESS being at all useful is having surplus solar and wind energy. We never have that.
  
  As I write this we are getting 13MW off solar and 163MW off wind. Together that is less than 3% of our current electricity demand of 6506MW.
  
  Even at the best of times (ie. absolute perfect 100% nameplate generation which never happens) we have 1259MW of wind and 179MW of solar – giving us 1438MW. At the period of our lowest energy demand, we need more than that.
  
  Charging and discharging BESS is only around 80% efficient, so it is far better to just use the power directly than add the extra inefficiencies, and stupidly high cost, of BESS.
  
  Therefore we really have no surplus solar and wind capacity to make BESS useful.
  
  But all the kids have them, so we need one too…
  
  BTW: We already have a 135MW BESS system installed – not that it does anything useful.

    Two days such as Canterbury is experiencing and it does not cope simple as, the generator is needed to keep it stable when off the Grid.

      Small scale battery storage for an off the grid system makes sense, but for that to work you need what you most likely have – surplus solar or wind production that can be stored up and used when the sun isn’t shining.
      
      If you want zero outages from such a system then you need a lot of storage. Around 2010 or so, my Canterbury rural internet was being provided by a microwave repeater on the top of Flagpole Hill. This was solar powered with batteries. It worked well until one nasty snow storm and cloudy period when the solar panels could not work for over 2 weeks straight. The batteries only lasted a week, after which they flew in a helicopter to take more batteries to the top of the hill. I think, in all, they made 3 helicopter flights up there. I doubt they made a profit that quarter.
      The main point of grid-level BESS is to convert excess renewable non-dispatchable power (solar and wind which you can’t control) into dispatchable power (ie. something you can turn on and off when you want – not at the whims of nature).
      
      The vast majority of our power is hydro. This is already from 100% dispatchable renewable resources. Therefore BESS in NZ is just a box ticking “look at me” exercise. It accomplishes nothing but is bloody expensive.
      
      There is a secondary purpose of BESS to provide a peaking buffer, but, again, hydro does that extremely well. Maybe 100MW of BESS help a bit too (eg. what we have), but more than that is completely pointless.
      
      If we ever get to a situation where over 50% of our power comes from solar and wind, then BESS starts potentially making a bit of sense, but given the amount of hydro we have that is unlikely to happen for decades.

  Luxon pretty much avoided talking about the battery, and switched the conversation to gas and coal. Maybe the battery is a good way to smooth out demand, I don’t know.
  
  But I had a guffaw when he dropped that “fusion” is part of the future. Not in my lifetime.
  
  As an aside, being in Thailand I’m listening to the hosking show via their podcast on Spotify. The entire 3 hour show is condensed into 90 minutes. All the ads and news breaks are cut out. Much more efficient!

Greenies might be elated, but this is not a good thing.

Electricity usage down 9%. Gas consumption down 32%. Coal down, Petrol and diesel down.

Energy usage is predominately an indicator of true productivity (manufacturing etc).

    No we are not really in the doldrums. The doldrums are static with nothing happening – no movement. No change.
    We’re losing 40,000 of our finest a year. Energy usage is down. NZD 20% down against USD over the last 4 years. Debt to GDP almost doubled in 5 years. That’s more like a whirlpool than doldrums.
    
    “but the Government is making significant progress”. What? I see tub-thumping about growth, but clearly the people that matter (ie the 40,000 a year leaving) are not believing the message.
    
    I’m not blaming Luxon for that. I thick Cindy’s mob set NZ on the skids and greased them, but it is not clear to me that Luxon is having any success at changing things.
    
    That said, excuses are no substitute for action.

      The fact that it is 40K annually shows how serious the problem has become. As staffing levels reduce to below critical levels we can expect the current rate to accelerate.
      
      Add to this our shambolic infrastructure, high numbers of public beneficiaries, personalwealth reduction, low productivity, etc and it could be argued that NZ is in a state equivalent to post war.

Radio NZ is reporting that our national ticketing system has been delayed. “The Motu Move system was supposed to launch in Timaru and Temuka by mid-2025, but has since been delayed due to “challenges with delivery”.

Given you can now tag on and off in Auckland with contactless debit & credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, what do we need a national ticketing system for anyway?

Surely it would be better to get all our transport systems accepting these payment methods (and probably AliPay and some other overseas ones as well)?

  Read an article on this a while back. The issue, unsurprisingly, is that each council wants a slightly different incentive scheme and the new ticketing system has to be able to handle all the crazy schemes.
  
  It would make more sense if they all used the same scheme but each council thinks it knows best.
  
  For example, in CHCH bus trips are $2 each way but once you have spent $16 in a given week all additional fares are free. Every council has their own spin on this adn they system has to handle them all. Likely a nightmare for the software developers and also why an existing system was ruled out.

    The cost of adding these special features is close to zero. It really doesn’t need a whole new system written from scratch.
    
    The need to accommodate these special features was known from the beginning (even if the special features themselves were unknown). Any half-decent programmers would have allowed for these and provided some sort of “plug in”/scripting.

    Us in IT told them to just go with the technology already supported natively. But they knew better.
    
    Refused to deal with Apple because “the commercials didn’t stack up” and they wanted to develop their own app for Android because they thought they were going to make something better than Google pay.
    
    The latter app was developed, but never got past basic payments, and ended up withering.
    
    Now they use the technology already supported natively.
    
    I’m not surprised that council managers think they know better.

    They also have to be able to handle connected services. For example my ride home using my Hop Card costs me $4.95 spread over 2 or 3 “zones”, but if I tag off to pop into the local New World to buy the wife some flowers, I’m already in the 3rd zone so pay $4.95. When I tag on again with the same card, it charges me $0.00 as long as I don’t cross over into a 4th zone. But with a Debit card, they can’t (currently) connect the 2 rides, so I have to pay extra if I don’t use my Hop Card.
    The same thing applies to the maximum of $50/week, it only applies to Hop Card rides. Part of this is because of the issues with “merchants” not being supposed to store client credit card details.

    Gaza’s (so-called) Health Ministry coordinates cross-border transportation of patients (from two hospitals in the north and south of the Gaza enclave) with the World Health Organization.
    
    Israel controls the Kerem Shalom Crossing as this is the main cargo crossing, used by trucks carrying goods from Israel or Egypt to the Gaza Strip, and is the major route for Hamas to smuggle bombs, ammunition and weapons (to store in / under UNWRA schools, and the Hamas-dug tunnels).

  Turns out those videos were pre-recorded for the eventuality of the boat being intercepted.
  
  It carried hardly any aid so is clearly just for media purposes.

    I’ll wager they had a token box of tinned food or bandages just so they could claim they were carrying vital humanitarian supplies.

“Katz says detained activists to be forced to watch video of Hamas atrocities

“Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to screen a video showing atrocities committed on October 7, 2023, to detained activists who had attempted to challenge Israel’s blockade on Gaza.

“The harrowing 43-minute video produced by the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson’s office shows shows uncensored, difficult-to-watch footage of people being massacred and bodies mutilated during the onslaught, much of it taken from terrorists’ bodycams.

“It’s appropriate that Greta the antisemite and her Hamas-supporting friends should see exactly who is the terror group Hamas that they support and act on behalf of, what atrocious acts they carried out on women, the elderly and kids, and who Israel is fighting for its defense against,” Katz says in the statement, referring to Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, the most famous of the 12 activists aboard the boat.

The only issue I have with them doing that is that they won’t do to the Green Thug Brat what was done to Alex DeLarge in ‘A Clockwork Orange.’

Maybe someone should publish the drinking habits of the Dunedin City Council members and employees, just to get a bit of balance.

I bet a lot of them would be proven to be hypocrites of the highest order.

The “Run it Straight” final is to be moved from NZ to Dubai.

Good. Less any people hurt in the final will no longer be entitled to ACC. If people want to turn themselves into cabbages – fine – just don’t do it where I have to pay.
