The UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband will commit £14.2 billion to building two giant nuclear reactors at Sizewell, Suffolk, capable of providing six million homes with electricity regardless of low winds and dark winter days. The heavy investment comes as fears rise that Mr Miliband’s rush to build wind and solar farms is leaving the grid “too exposed to the weather and vulnerable to outages.”

With the UK’s recent building performance record the new station will be opened by King George VII.

    The article notes the electricity grid “was built to deliver power generated … near the country’s major cities and towns, and doesn’t always have sufficient capacity … to get the new renewable electricity generated way out in the wild seas and rural areas.”
    
    So they pay rural generators compensation to reduce their output to the rural line capacity, while at the same time paying generators close to the cities extra to provide more as they have access to higher capacity lines.
    
    I wonder if they’ve ever considered upgrading their national grid so that power can be fed in and taken out anywhere.

  Well it is a good start. A very good start.
  The devil will be in the details though and a quick scan makes it unclear what those are.
  
  It will also be interesting to see how fast they can make this happen.Some of the existing UK nukes are being retired in 5 years ago so hopefully they can find some solution for that. Maybe buy some power from France?
  
  There is a lot of buzz about SMRs which very certainly are not “two nuclear reactors”. Perhaps they are building 2 main nukes as well as a bunch of SMRs, or maybe a bunch of SMRs at two sites?
  
  SMRs are sub-100MW reactors so you would need 100+ of those to power 6 million homes (est. 10GW).
  
  If they really are building 2 very large nukes (ie. 5GW each) then those would be far larger than anything built anywhere else in the world. Very large generators are problematic in that they are such a huge loss of generation when you take one off line.
  
  IMHO, around 1 to 2 GW is the sweet spot for base load nuclear generators in a country the size of UK: large enough to make a difference, but small enough to not destabilize the grid when it is taken offline. 10GW would need 5 to 10 of those.

      That’s written by journalists who likely don’t know the difference between a power station (which has multiple reactors in it) and a reactor or a generating unit.
      
      Two giant reactors producing 5GW of electricity each would be way out of step with the rest of the world.
      
      Currently the two largest nuclear power stations are in Korea (Kori and Hanul) – each power station is over 7GW. Huge. But they both have 10 units (generators) running off 6 or 7 reactors. The largest of any of those generators is around 1300MW (ie. about 2GW off one reactor).
      
      Likely UK would go with a similar construction of multiple generating units per reactor and multiple reactors per plant but it is unclear exactly what they’re talking about yet.

The media in America has been undergoing a kind of faux repentance for their role in the cover up of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline. Jake Tapper, on his book tour, assures us that he feels humility about his coverage on Biden. But here’s the thing. The media can cover Biden honestly now because he’s no longer in power and it doesn’t matter, he’s no longer the president of the United States.

But what happens when it does matter? Will the media report honestly? Will they heck!

Our old friends CNN are using the exact same playbook as they did during the George Floyd riots. Then, they described the riots as mostly peaceful, as the reporter was standing in front of a building on fire!

Now in LA the riots over immigration law enforcement are being described by CNN thus –

“At this point, this has been very peaceful. It has been tense at some points, but we haven’t seen any violence happening here,” CNN correspondent Julia Vargas Jones said as the network showed rioters on motorbikes circling a car on fire in the middle of an intersection.

Thankfully things are different than they were in 2020. Trump has an overwhelming electoral mandate. He campaigned on mass deportations. He won all the swing states and the majority of the popular vote. His policies on immigration are very popular as even the CNN pollster admits.

And lastly the powers of CNN have waned considerably. In 2016 they had over 13m viewers. Now it’s a million or less. People have access to streamers and podcasters who are not locked in the liberal bubble.

Here in NZ don’t believe what TV1 and TV3 news tells you. Trump’s crackdown on immigration is very popular. The people want law and order, they want mass deportations and they are getting them. Right now Trump is winning on this issue.
And the Democrats are losing. The democrat leaders like Mayor Karen Bass support the “protestors”.

But how many American voters support masked men torching cars in LA while waving Mexican flags?

      I suppose that the forum shopping for Federal district court judges might work again for the Democrats but Section 12406 seems pretty clearcut because while it lists invasions and rebellions as justifications for the President taking over a State’s National Guard also has a third provision:

      (3) the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States;
      
      the President may call into Federal service members and units of the National Guard of any State in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws.

        But the LBJ one is such an example, and in any case it doesn’t matter. There is nothing in Section 12406 that requires such a request to the President.
        
        It’s another example of Trump learning from his first term, when he waited around for the governors of Minnesota, Oregon, Illinois and other “Blue States” to do the right thing because surely they didn’t want to let Antifa/BLM screw over their own voters?

        Scott: Officially it isn’t an insurrection as Trump has yet to invoke the insurrection act. And this is the line that Mikey is parroting which he has lifted from left wing media in the US. The argument goes that without invoking the insurrection act Trump cannot mobilise the national guard over the objections of the governor. And there may be some validity in that legally speaking. It would need to be tested in court.
        
        But Mikey needs to ask himself WHY Trump hasn’t invoked the insurrection act, which given the circumstances he would seem fully justified in doing. In fact the insurrection act could be invoked at any time with a stroke of the pen, sweeping all these objections away. And that I think is the key.
        
        In my opinion Trump is daring Governor Newsome and others of like ilk to to try to use this argument to block him and to fully commit to defending the rioters. If they fall into this trap the insurrection act will be invoked (so their challenge will fail), and they can be politically skewered thereafter as supporters of insurrection. Newsomes hopes of being the next president would go up in flames just like a Waymo in LA.

    Mike, the USA holds elections every four years for their President, and as I recall, Trump won not only the Electoral College (which get’s him the position as President) but also the national popular vote – including every swing state, so I guess that means he certainly has a mandate for the policies he stood for, and is actually enacting. As he says “Promises made, Promises kept.
    
    Polls outside of an election cycle are purely a creation of the media to gauge public opinion / mood at any point in time. The are created by asking questions (in themselves sometimes a questionable – pun intended – method of determining the result) on specific topics, and can only be regarded as entertainment. They have no practical consequence other than allow media to beat up on whomever they want to.

      The judge turned down a request for an emergency order and scheduled a hearing. It’s very likely Trump did not follow the law, which won’t matter in the end as the supreme court has decided that nothing a president does can be illegal.

        Mike, it is not raving as you say. It is the considered opinion of decent, critical thinking people.
        
        The evidence is mounting of the planned nature of these “protests”. They are not the spontaneous outpouring of everyday people – they have all the hallmarks of a carefully planned and financed event, with deliveries of masks, shields, bricks etc.
        
        And the left in the USA have got themselves in such a space that they have to side with the very worst of that society. Come mid terms next year, I doubt that the Democrats will have any credibility left and will be needing a long period of internal navel gazing to build up any sense of respectability.

    A provision of Title 10 – Section 12406, opens new tab – allows the president to deploy National Guard units into federal service if the U.S. is invaded, there is a “rebellion or danger of rebellion” or the president is
    
    “Unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States.”
    
    The laws of the United States include attacking federal officers(ICE) is a federal crime.
    
    Keep in mind that the LAPD took 2 hours to turnup after the ICE guys were attacked.

Bass was one of the approximately five prominent black women politicians considered for the role, but she was deemed by the DNC to be even less competent than Cacklin’ Kamala.
      
      Ultimately, if picked, Bass would have been up against Trump following Biden’s historic unmasking as a vegetable (in late June 2024). If so, Trump would have turned New Jersey red.
      
      It sounded unbelievable during the 2024 Presidential campaign that Bass could be considered less competent than Harris.
      
      Then we saw her appalling fire management in January (she and Newsom blamed it on climate change). Now we see her appalling management of communist rioters (she and Newsom blame this on Trump).
      
      In hindsight, it was a solid decision by the DNC.
      
      Democrats judge themselves on words only, never on actions. Responsibility is always to be shirked. What a cancer they are.

  QE II is getting their existing funding, plus another $4.5 million over 3 years. This is a little less than the Jobs for Nature boost of $8 million over 4 years, but still significant funding for a non government entity. I must say I agree with the first quote from Gary Taylor in the article: “I think I think it’s ridiculous that QEII is struggling on around about $5 million a year”. But only if you take the words as written. Gary meant something different, whereas I think they should be able to achieve good outcomes with the fairly generous funding that they’re getting.

  Not sure of your point here, art. The Q E ll National Trust does an incredible job working with farmers and landowners to conserve some of our amazing landscape at what is a very modest cost.
  
  The area under covenant, gifted and managed for free is much bigger than most of our National Parks. The Trust is getting less money because an annual grant has been cut by the Coalition and a separate smaller amount has been reinstated.
  
  This is the best value for money in conservation in the country and should be encouraged and supported.

  The EDS has a sad history of constantly appealing consents in the environment court, and at local councils, which has seen funds diverted from environmental work on site to lawyers in courtrooms.
  The EDS does not have much to recommend it.
  It has a “no” focus.

When you have one of your two main political parties as the political wing of the trade union movement then it is a disaster for any country. Electing Labour into government is the equivalent of letting a fox have unfettered access to your henhouse. Labour (aka the unions) are not a gatekeeper of the public purse they are a plunderer. Witness the cavalier approach to so-called pay equity, which was set to cost taxpayers $16 billion and involved Labour committing to have the taxpayer underwrite pay equity claims on private businesses. This was an attempt at redistribution on a colossal scale, all with the underlying goal of forcing up taxes as a fait accompli to pay for all the largesse. And underpinning the whole scam was flawed reasoning and dishonesty it the way these claims were to be made and assessed. Again, Labour has no concern for fiscal responsibility or being a careful steward of taxpayer funds. They are a rapacious organism devouring public money.

      Um. The emphasis for property owners seems to be capital gain rather than rental income. Emphasis seems to be on how much can be borrowed and serviced etc. For a newly purchased rental to be cash neutral needs about a 60% deposit.
      
      Anyone who buys in with significantly less than that is simply doing a bit of leveraged speculation with the gummint as a partner.
      
      I don’t have a problem with speculation as a (deductible) business activity, but the other shoe should then be taxed. If the costs are deductible the income should be taxable …..

Pride, I would like to hope so.

        I had a great Chinese doctor in Auckland. They’d moved to nz before I was born, yet still faced racism. Sad story really. They were both on Paul Holmes once talking about their son who had committed suicide, the stress of 48 hour shifts at the hospital got too much.         Hi Mike, certainly the rain has come & gone today. There was 5 mins of stair rods at 11am or thereabouts, drizzle off & on but also periods of no rain. I didn’t notice any thunder today, don’t know where you got that from. As for cold, nothing like down South, zero prospect of ice. It actually was warmish at 8.29am, though I accept some of that is perception. Minimal wind on The Terrace at that time, no wind chill.
        
        I’d have said cooler weather is better for cycling – who wants to work up a sweat on the way to work?

Those 90 day employment trials under fire from the PSA – Fitzsimons called 90-day trials “hideous”, because they “allow workers to be sacked for no reason at all”. “They leave workers questioning themselves, their own worth and their future. They are cruel and unfair and no human being should be subject to them.”

Back in the day someone said to protesters against same sex marriage – don’t do it then.

  As an employer I used the 90 day rule twice. On both occasions the employee did not perform as required. You don’t do it lightly. The recruitment process is expensive and time consuming. I’d like a system where you can be open with the employee about shortcomings but you’ve got to be so precise that you can’t. One false move and it’s off the the court and almost inevitably $10 grand down the drain. One of the joys of retirement (and I really enjoyed my work) is no more HR.

NZ has joined with Australia and Canada on this. The problem is where do you stop? Half the world’s politicians would be banned if this is taken to its logical conclusion.

        Gaza has become a ****hole of a place due to the world becoming frustrated at the direction the people there have taken. None of the other surrounding countries wants them, and so they have become the useful idiots of the region, electing the likes of Arafat and now Hamas. In both cases all money going to the region is used for military and political activities, and not building a prosperous economy with the flow on effects of building a good society.
        
        A by product is that it becomes the cause célèbre of the “left” around the world, and used as a tool to fight other battles. The BBC have been at their worst, in reporting the situation. Always taking Hamas propaganda at face vaue, and not questioning it in any way. Now I’m sure that the Israelis are always squeaky clean, but they have proven themselves by creating literally out of nothing a thriving and successful democratic society – including Palestinian citizens – whilst the Palestinians have been hell bent on nothng but trying to destroy Israel. All the billions given to them in aid misspent on rockets, arms, and hatred … leaving a starving population.
        
        All power to Trump for his suggestion to clear out Gaza, encourage the neighbours to take the refugees in, and build up a prosperous centre, free of the hate driven monsters that are the true enemies of the Palestinian people.

        War stinks, but just look at the history of war over time. Never has there been a result without civilian casualties.

        I was not surprised that when the USA sent in aid direct to Gaza, the Gazan’s were surprised it was free, because Hamas would take the aid from the UN, and sell it to the population. As a result I suspect that 95% of Gazans would in reality like to be part of Israel, or some other international oversight organisation (that was not UN of course).
        
        Once the terrorists are eliminated, and only then, will there will be a chance of peace.

        Regardless, if Israelis indeed plan genocide for the people of Gaza, they’ve a long way to go.
        
        The Gaza population up till the war was about 850,000. Deaths so far are are about 55,000, according to a report from ~~Turkey~~ Türkiye.

        Relative size doesn’t reduce the mayhem and the suffering of the Gazans, but it’s worth noting the Turks’ genocide of the Armenian people.

    Why do US politicians care about which countries sanction or otherwise repudiate Israel? Is it because most if them, and particularly someone in Marco Rubio’s situation, rely on the support if wealthy Jewish donors for his political career?
    
    Rubio is from Florida which, besides perhaps New York and California, has the highest proportion of Jews of any state, particularly South Florida. In other words, if he’s insufficiently pro-Israel, his benefactors will just find someone else more to their, and Israel’s, liking. This is also why, for example, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed certain bills into law while literally in Israel, which is otherwise quite inexplicable.
    
    These are the facts, but many commenters no doubt still think that the unwavering support for Israel routinely expressed by US Congressmen is just because that is the default moral position. What’s the old saying, so apt regarding politicians? I’ve got principles, but if you don’t like them, I can have other ones.

    Sure. I can argue it two ways.
    
    1. NZ is a Christian country. Our laws and behaviours are all based on the Christian religion that the English also bought to the Maori.
    
    2. Maori ceded sovereignty to the Crown, they gave ownership to the crown in return for the rights and privileges of British citizens. Therefore NZ is a British / English country. Thus the governor general.
    
    If NZ was a Maori country each ‘city’ would have its own laws, there would be no central government and probably we would be periodically at war with each other in the way Europe was in centurys past.
    
    These is also the question of why any particular ethnicity needs to claim ownership of the country?

        The native English and native Polish both have a greater right to their respective nations than Jews do Israel. The former two have lived many hundreds of years as extremely high majorities which is a far superior basis than living as an insignificant minority in a region for a long time, but then migrating there from elsewhere (and in still not very large numbers) over the last few decades.     Surely the country is called New Zealand and who is ‘the country’ is the totality of the 5.5 million citizens living here no matter their race, colour, or creed. But no, you prefer to see this place as ‘a Maori country’ meaning that the 17% are the rightful inhabitants while the 83% are second class interlopers.         Even if it had been a “Maori Country” prior to the signing of the treaty (as opposed to a loose federation of independent chieftansips), the signing of the Treaty established a completely new entity which was not single ethnicity.
        By the time the country of New Zealand was established and egally recognized it was based uponba multi ethnic citizenship.
        
        Rather like England, where, right from it’s inception, to be English was to be a citizen of the location with the residents having a mixed and diverse genetic make up.

        Evidence goes back tens of thousands of years.
        
        The tree stump and adze under the volcanic layer in central Auckland, found by Auckland Council workers in the mid 1800s, is one of hundreds of pieces of evidence. The volcanic layer is between 30,000 and 60,000 years old.
        
        And the history of the Waitaha, Celts, Moriori – from Maori’s own history. And the Cook Islands history of canoe expeditions as early as 500AD.
        
        And remember it is Maori oral history that proudly records the presence of people living here when they arrived. Some natives, some with blonde hair and fair skin, and some with red hair.
        
        If you start pouring cold water on that history despite evidence, I’m free to do the same to Maori history, and say that Maori only arrived here in 1641 a few months before Abel Tasman.

  Maori, PI (who Ferris surely includes when politically advantageous to do so) and those of Indian ethnicity are the fastest breeding part of the population. Together they represent over 40% of the enrolled school children (whether they turn up is another matter).
  
  By 2040 (ie just 15 years) Maori and PI are expected to represent over 50% of the school kids and a decade or two after that they will represent over 50% of the population in general.
  
  So NZ is well on its way to being a Maori country. All we’re haggling about is the timescale.

    European and Maori have intermingled freely for, soon, two centuries. Other Polynesians will be similar, and likely Indians and Chinese, too.
    
    Perhaps the outcome will be a dominantly Mestizo-type population — like much of Latin America, except Uruguay and Argentina.

    I must admit to being quite fascinated by octopuses
    Researchers are convinced they are smarter than children at the same age (up to 3 years old).
    They make tools, they figure out problems- all on their own. They dream, they recognise different human faces etc.
    What holds octopuses back from reaching the top of the evolutionary tree is that
    they are solitary, so can’t learn from one another and they don’t live very long (3 to 4 years)

  The octopus population will be thriving. Essentially the crab traps are working as feeding stations – doing all the hard work the octopus normally has to do for itself.
  
  I wouldn’t think there’s much you can do about it because an octopus can go through a hole smaller than a crab.
  
  The only solution would seem to be eating the buggers.

Sigh. Once again TVNZ’s 1News just can’t seem to comprehend the idea of reporting both sides of a story.

Tonight they carried the story of Adrian Orr’s resignation. They reported it as “Orr didn’t agree with the Government’s move to cut costs” and could not continue in the role with significantly less funding than he thought was viable. The item was carefully curated to portray the image of a fearless and principled bank governor going into bat against a heartless Government, and resigning on principle when the Government didn’t give in.

No mention that the board had said that a lesser amount of funding was fine. No comment that Treasury had advised the Finance Minister Nicola Willis that the proposal didn’t provide good value for money.

I really don’t understand why they do this. Do they think their viewers don’t read? Or that 1News is their sole source of information? Do they think their audience is watching 1News just before they go to bed at 8:00 pm (after their nightcap of Ovaltine) and nodding in approval at this fine reporting because they don’t have the Internet (or a computer, for that matter – they don’t trust this new-fangled technology) and therefore can’t possibly stumble across any other source of news?

It’s nothing less than propagating disinformation by lack of context, and for a supposedly reputable news organisation it’s unacceptable.
