    Over 500 of Hitler’s speeches have been recorded in video or just audio, according to the link below.
    
    Interestingly, it’s to a recording of a non-speech conversation of Hitler with Mannerheim in Finland in June 1942. This was subtly or accidentally recorded by the Finns.
    
    Hitler apparently worked hard, practising his speeches, down to taking acting lessons on his physical presentation.

        Michael Joseph Savage was the NZ politician nearest to being idolised. Scores of thousands of homes, just coming out of the hardships of the Depression, had pictures of Savage on the wall.
        
        He also gave rise to a political mutiny, with the one-arm WW1 veteran and novelist and MP, John A. Lee, alleging Savage had gone insane. Labour expelled Lee.
        
        Roger Douglas’s father, Norman Douglas, also an MP, was Lee’s ally, and followed him out of the Labour Party.

        Lee was a colourful politician, a popular novelist in his time, and a writer whose other books included tales about old colonial drifters — the swag men.
        
        One of his books was about the craft of public speaking. No microphone for him. His advice: talk loudly to the person at the back of the hall.
        
        As a politician Lee was a Social Credit-loving socialist. His autobiographical novel Children of the Poor demonstrated why.

    We have very few road that are equivalent to overseas standards.
    These electric cars have heavy batteries that take a pounding when the car hits a pothole and the soldered joints on the batteries become fatigued and break.
    They should be banned from enclosed carparks and ferries.

      The batteries (cells) are not soldered, they are spot welded onto metallic strips. Extremely unlikely to separate in a collision.
      The problem is ruptured LiOn (or LiPo) cells burn at over 500 degC until exhausted of fuel. They also fume cobalt when burning, which is highly toxic and damages lungs. This is bad.
      There is a new generation of Lithium cells, LiFePO4 that will not burn if ruptured. If ruptured, they heat to about 100 degC and spit out fluid (not very toxic) and stop working. No cobalt.
      Also LiFePO4 has over 3 times the charge / discharge lifespan of LiOn / LiPo
      The downside is they have only ½ the energy density of LiOn.
      BYD and some others have already started using these cells instead.

  I have a friend who is a very senior technician for a major European brand.
  
  He is one of very few who are allowed to work on EVs and understands them better than anyone outside of design engineers.
  
  He tells me they must have a dedicated empty bay in their car park into which they must push damaged EV’s that they think will go in thermal runaway.
  
  He wonders who’s going to do the pushing, because it sure as hell won’t be him.

    The risk maybe lower…. internal combustion vehicles in accidents can easily spew out petrol/diesel on to hot engine components or exhaust – fire ensues.
    
    ICE vehicles can be easily doused with foam, water or a fire suppression system (inert gas usually like nitrogen, argon, CO2) in an enclosed space like a storage warehouse or boat.
    
    EV fires can not be dealt with in the same way and in enclosed spaces are close to impossible to suppress.
    
    EVs in enclosed spaces are a nightmare – see Morning Midas car transporter. Vessel completely burnt out and sank June 2025 in the North pacific off Alaska….

      My stepbrother is a fireman in Wellington, they are shit scared when opening a crashed car with jaws of life, as they don’t know if they are Ev’s immediately after the vehicle is damaged, he said wiring is in all sorts of different places and cutting wires can great the ignition for the battery fire

According to Herald, Luxon is announcing a new sentences for assault on first responders.

While I am absolutely in favour of supporting first responders who are forced to go into situations the rest of us can avoid, I think this is just more BS tub-thumping.

First apply the laws that exist. There is no evidence that new laws or sentences are needed. Just apply the tools that are already in the toolbox. New laws should only be enacted if the current laws don’t work.

At the moment, what is broken is the application of the laws, not the laws and sentences themselves. More laws and sentences not applied by a broken judiciary will change nothing.

Secondly, specific laws are shit.

An example of that is the law banning the use of a cellphone while driving (not that the law is applied). It is a poorly constructed law because if you’re fiddling with a tablet or app on a car information/entertainment system instead of a cell phone – using exactly the same apps with the same level of distraction – the law does not apply.

So what happens if there is a rural crash and the first people who roll up on the scene are a farmer and a truck driver. They start helping and get assaulted. Are they covered by the “first responder” law?

So what happens if some thug is beating up my neighbour and I intervene to help her?

So what about a nurse in a hospital? (s)he is no longer a “first responder”.

BS. Laws should be principle-based. They should not have special carve outs for different members of the population.

Our existing assault laws are adequate. They just need to be applied properly.

    If people served their full sentences we would probably need close to 3x the prison capacity. Of course then prison might start serving as a proper deterrent so the number would drop to, maybe 2x.
    
    Still, it is way cheaper to have those people locked up than walking around spreading mayhem in society.

        All the laws to protect everyone from assault are already there – be they paramedics or people driving the till at the garden centre. The current laws just need to be used properly.
        
        If the judiciary do not apply the existing laws properly then why does anyone have confidence they will apply the new laws any differently?
        
        Any time you find yourself making laws for specific classes of people then you’re probably doing it wrong. Assault is assault, be that against a paramedic, the trolley guy at the supermarket or a one-legged Buddhist lesbian.

      We would need to analyse the impact beyond offence leading to a jail term, but rather discrete persons convicted & sentenced to prison and whether they have received another jail term when out of jail for a prior before the prior full sentence period has expired…

      Everyone is there to help and nobody should be targeted by nutters be they medical staff or a local farmer.
      
      In 2000, at 2 am, myself and another driver stopped and pulled an injured guy out of a burning car then rendered first aid until fire and ambo arrived (the dude had crashed into the Kirwee fire station, so fire turned up pretty quickly). It would be hard to argue that we were not acting as first responders at the time.
      
      It would be absurd if people acting like that were treated differently form fire and ambo staff.
      
      That is the problem with specific laws. It creates a bunch of interpretation problems. eg. it was dark and my client couldn’t see the uniform properly.

        The judges answer to that should be “Too bad”
        
        It would be no bad thing for the definition of a first responder to be as loose as possible, on duty, off duty, uniform , no uniform, and even include the public helping out.
        
        Why should the law have to be so specific in its definition in the interest of the offender having the defense that they wouldn’t have assaulted or murdered their victim if they had known their occupation.
        
        Offenders, like their victims, should be subject to the vagaries of luck.

    How about requiring anyone convicted to first serve out the full parole from any previous sentence. The quid pro quo of parole is that you don’t reoffend. If you do reoffend then you should be called back to prison to serve out the remaining time. Automatically.

      Yup, some places do that.
      
      When a person gets parole, the rest of the sentence is not wiped. It is instead converted into a suspended sentence.
      
      For example:
      Start off with a 5 year sentence.
      After 3 years, get the remaining 2 years of the sentence converted into 2 years suspended for 2 years.
      If you fail to keep your nose clean for the remaining 2 years you’re immediately back in prison to serve the remaining 2 years of prison time.
      
      This creates an incentive to go straight that release does not.

    The sentencing reductions has been cut to no more than 40% starting today, it was an automatic 50% before behaviour and accepting blame, sentences cannot go below 40% reduction anymore, and judges will have no say

  disabled
  gender diverse
  ethnic minorities
  religious minorities
  
  Where does it end? Maybe it’s easier just to pass a law that says if you assault a straight white able bodied male Christian or atheist you get an automatic 50% discount at sentencing.

  The increased penalties are for injuring with intent to injure. They are much higher up the hierarchy of assaults than the more common common assault that most incidents probably result in. Lawyers will try and plea bargain down a charge of injuring with intent to injure to common assault so it will not attract the higher penalty. A conviction for injuring with intent to injure is harder to prove because intent to injure needs to be proved. Lastly Judges would still need to impose the higher penalty and we know that’s not going to happen. So yes it’s all BS and puffery.

  * Is a first responder still a first responder if they are out of uniform?
  * Is the first responder still a first responder if they were off-shift and driving home in their uniform when they stopped to give first aid?
  * Why should the trolley guy at the supermarket be treated any differently than the first responder?

      Not really because any definition is going to have grey zones and interpretation required.
      
      Is a farmer who rolls up at a crash in his paddock a first responder?
      What happens when an off-duty army medic turns up 5 minutes later? Is he now a first responder?
      
      Apparently they have said “on duty” first responder, so that would exclude those above examples, but it would also exclude an ambulance worker driving home after their shift.

I was digging through some old stuff and came across
Phonebloks again.

At the time, 10+ years ago, I said this was a crap idea and was doomed to fail. I am sure that even some of the people at Google that ended up buying them thought it was a crap idea too, but this was all about public perception rather than reality.

The idea that you can just upgrade your phone by plugging in a new module is highly appealing if you don’t understand the problem space, but, like with most engineering, the devil is in the details.

Engineering is the art of compromise. Whenever you add some capability it is normally at the cost of removing some other capability.

When you add modularity, it reduced the speed at which the chips can communicate. It adds cost. It increases signal interference and jamming. It increases size, increases power consumption, increases the chance of breakage.

Basically all the compromises end up making the existing problems you’re supposed to be solving much worse.

So where’s the win?

Yes, modularity has a place, but not in a compact device like a phone.

  The trouble with such a concept is not any of the technology, but that big tech companies need to protect their tribe (customers), and make sure by whatever means, to keep them in the camp.
  
  We have the “Apple” people who only buy Apple for the style and technologically not too difficult, but making them feel that they are technologically at the forefront – the Android people who are the rebels – and the businesses that refer to themselves as ‘Microsoft shops”. These are territories jealously protected.
  
  Phonebloks would have challenged the big tech control of their customer base, and such projects would have ultimately been sidelined.

    Nope, sorry, this is not some sort of industry conspiracy theory of “big phone” trying to screw customers. It’s the laws of physics.
    
    If you connect up a SOC (the main computer in a phone or tablet or whatever) to other chips (eg. the DDR memory chips), these are extremely high speed links over very short distances that need length matched traces and highly controlled impedance. The accuracy of that length matching needs to be around a quarter of a millimetre or so.
    
    A very slight deviation from that means the device won’t work at oall, or more typically, it can only work slower and/or using more power, generating more interference etc.
    
    If you want to make that pluggable so that you can change the SOC, then you need to add connectors and make sub-optimal bus connections. These will compromise the device performance.
    
    Nobody does this primarily because it is a dumb thing to do.
    
    You can get away with modularity on a PC or similar because there is less concern about power usage and there is more space to be able to allow for this. Not an option on small systems like cell phones with highly packed electronics.

DSD and transgender are undisputed, and disputed respectively but non binary does not exist.
It is an appalling travesty to discuss creating law concerning a non existent category.

We know reversing bad law almost never happens,which is why we are stuck with the pernicious self ID and conversion legislation.

This just landed at RNZ:

Secrecy surrounds the arrest of a prominent New Zealander.

RNZ understands the person was arrested last week.

After being made aware of their arrest, RNZ approached a district court to see if there were any suppression orders and when the individual would be appearing in court.

In response, a registrar said the individual faced eight charges, all of which are category three offences meaning the offence is punishable by imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for two years or more. However, an application had been granted prohibiting media from being able to report on the person’s name, identifying particulars as well as the nature of the charges the person faced.

The order was granted on an interim basis ahead of their first appearance in court.

Milei’s economy on the up …

Javier Milei has the Argentine economy well on the recovery path, and a huge mineral reserve discovered on the Argentine-Chile border will help the country in coming years.

Reuters reports Argentina’s economy has grown year-on-year for the second consecutive quarter and by the most since 2022. Gross domestic product expanded 5.8% in the first quarter compared to the same quarter in 2024.

The central bank’s latest market expectations survey of analysts forecasts GDP will grow 5.2 per cent this year.

The newly discovered Vicuña Mineral Resource is one of the largest finds of its kind in 30 years. It’s estimated to contain 13 million tons of copper, 32 million ounces of gold, and 659 million ounces of silver, positioning it among the largest copper, gold, and silver deposits in the world.

    The Coward’s Punch, once known as the King Hit, and even sometimes stupidly called the Sucker Punch, is vicious and dangerous. Rank it with tactics such as kicking a person who is down.
    
    First, a coward’s punch is typically thrown when the victim’s attention is elsewhere: perhaps chatting in a neighbouring group in a bar, for example, or standing back on to the attacker.
    
    Second, the victim gets no warning. There’s no chance of bracing for the fall. No chance of using arms to protect the head.
    
    Third, the puncher typically throws full weight and strength into a swing without having prepare for a counter-hit. The puncher can position feet and stance for optimum punching balance.
    
    Fourth, the puncher cares nothing for the extent of the injury inflicted; cares nothing for dangerous objects for the fast-falling head. Often a victim’s head suffers severe injury from a fixture.
    
    Fifth, a coward’s punch comes when an attacker has assessed the attention of victim and friends is elsewhere. It’s a calculated attack on a person not in a defence mode. It’s not an impulsive reaction.
    
    A true example. A young man’s in a bar having farewell drinks with work mates on his last day before moving to a new job.
    
    With a civil tone, he asks a noisy neighbouring group to settle down a little. He’s the biggest guy in his celebrating group, and obviously feels it’s his responsibility.
    
    He turns and continues his conversation. A few minutes go by. Then a thug from the noisy group punches him from behind and puts him down. His head hits a floor fixture and he suffers a fatal injury, especially traumatic for his family because it entails switching off life support.

Is Finance Minister Nicola Willis futilely trying to square an economic circle by hammering supermarket chains while trying to attract overseas operators to NZ?

She seems to be following the line of the Grocery Commissioner, Pierre van Heerden, who was appointed by the Labour Government two years ago.

Van Heerden’s Commission stuffed up comparison of supermarket prices in Australia and NZ. That’s the argument of Roger Partridge in a Point of Order article reprinted from Substack.

It seems that, in finding Australian supermarkets are cheaper than NZ’s, bureaucrats overlooked there’s no GST on food in Australia.

Partridge challenges Commerce Commission criticism pf NZ supermarkets for “negotiating down” prices down suppliers. He notes figures from Foodstuffs indicate suppliers take 68c of each “grocery dollar”. NZ supermarkets get 19c — 4c of which is profit.

In Partridge’s words:

“Supermarkets are responsible for just 19 cents: four cents profit, fifteen for costs like wages, rent, and refrigeration. GST takes the remaining thirteen.”

The Commerce Commission would limit how aggressively NZ supermarkets bargain with suppliers. It also opposes them charging suppliers who don’t stock shelves themselves.

Anxiety about such shelf logistics is stopping Aldi from entering New Zealand, says Partridge.
