  Very difficult to prove they are wrong though. When the over-engineered “solutions”, bloated bureaucratic administration and under resourced workforce costs filter through to ratepayers water bills, the entity will just state “it would be 30% more expensive if we weren’t doing it this way.”

“In July last year, prompted by a false rumour that an illegal immigrant was responsible for the murder of three girls at a dance workshop in Southport, Lucy Connolly posted online calling for “mass deportation now”, adding “set fire to all the… hotels [housing asylum seekers]… for all I care”.

Connolly, then a 41-year-old Northampton childminder, added: “If that makes me racist, so be it.”

At the time she had about 9,000 followers on X. Her message was reposted 940 times and viewed 310,000 times, before she deleted it three and a half hours later.”

Lucy Connolly, who had no criminal record, was given a 31 month jail term for what amounted to a mean tweet made in the heat of the moment and deleted a few hours later once she thought better of it. The sentence was appealed but the appeal was unsuccessful. So that’s the law in Great Britain it seems. That’s the standard.

Now we see that a singer named Bob Vylan leads a huge crowd at Glastonbury in a chant of “free, free Palestine”. But obviously not satisfied with that, he leads the crowd in a chant, “Death, death to the IDF”. This chant is heard and repeated by thousands at the music festival and was broadcast to millions of people over the BBC.

So how is that not incitement to violence? How is that not hate speech? Mr Vylan had a much bigger audience. That his chant was pre planned and not done in the heat of the moment is clear. He’s calling for the death of Israeli soldiers and if they die then who will protect the ordinary civilian Israelis? Is the free Palestine chant also a call for the extinction of the state of Israel? Certainly it’s incitement to violence which is against the law.

If Lucy Connolly got jail time for what she tweeted then Mr Vylan needs jail time also.
I suspect he won’t get jail time because of Britain’s two tiered justice system. But I’d be happy to be proved wrong. 😎

  Ah, but you fundamentally misunderstand the function of police and judiciary in the UK. They don’t exist to protect the citizens of the country, they exist to protect the establishment.
  Lucy Connolly’s tweet was a threat to TPTB, drawing attention to what they’re doing to the country, so the metaphorical book had to be thrown. This alleged musician is pushing approved establishment views so he’ll get no punishment at all, once the police have finished their pretence of “investigating”.

  In one breath Bob Vylan wants the Palestinians to get their country back. In the next breath he’s crowing that the indigenous English have had their country taken and will not get it back.
  
  Then comes the commentary, legal huffing and puffing, frowny faces worn by politicians, and it’s all focused on how Bob Vylan targetted Israel and the Jews. Targeting England and the English is apparently OK.

    The City Rail Meet your stations webpage includes a guide to how to pronounce the name of every one of the four stations being introduced.
    
    Think about that for a minute.
    
    The tax- and ratepayer funded agency naming these stations has chosen names it thinks the population the stations serve will not be able to pronounce.
    
    Imagine treating the people who pay your salary like that.

    I understand that even the Aotea Square or Karangahape Rd. stations couldn’t be called Aotea Square or Karangahape Rd.
    
    I’m struggling to understand why. The goal is confusion rather than Maorification? Forcing change for the sake of change? Grooming the population for compliance by inventing new hoops for them to jump through? Ensuring Iwi get to ‘gift’ new names (presumably for a fee)?

      Apparently, the NZ Geographic Board uses “naming guidelines and standards and follows international good practice to help it make robust and enduring decisions”.
      
      Pronunciation is important in “te reo” and macrons support that, so they use them. Presumably it matters not that those macrons don’t exist in the language of most of the station users, so won’t help them at all.
      
      Also, as these are the “official” names, they will have to be used in “all official documents like road signs, maps, websites, databases and publications for tourists.”
      
      I’m guessing unofficial names will soon emerge – Mt Eden, K Rd, probably Wellesley St, (if it becomes the most used entrance), and Britomart. They may not appear on government documents, but thanks to the internet, can be tagged on everything else.

National getting tough on assaults on “first responders”. What a stupid American expression. First responders are usually members of the public or family members.

Anyway, emergency staff getting assaulted (very minor part in the overall crime which is now part of the culture) is no better or worse than any other assault. Lock all the scum up for very long periods of time regardless of who they hit.

    It’s more than feelz. These are people who have no option but to go into dangerous situations. I think it was over 1000 police quoted yesterday that were assaulted last year. None of us have to go into a situation where we could be assaulted. I have no problem with this change. I’d also like an automatic prison sentence if you flee the police. An automatic ticket if you don’t pull over for an emergency vehicle with their lights on. The amount of bleeps who don’t pull over with an ambulance behind them us shocking.

      I’m not saying first offenders shouldn’t be protected. What I am saying is that the existing laws actually already cover this stuff, if enforced. The new laws might add another year to the maximum penalty but that really doesn’t do much when very few got the old maximum penalty.
      
      I would also argue there is little deterrent involved. I suspect the people assaulting ambulance drivers are out of control (emotionally or drug wise) and that a slightly higher penalty isn’t top of their minds (at the time).
      
      What the government is doing is signalling to their base that they are tough on crime and doing something. Feelz.
      
      Its the same as Labours carbon policy. I wasn’t doing anything to make the environment better, often making it worse, but it was less about achievements and more about signalling they cared. Feelz.
      
      Sadly thats modern politics.

    As much as I want to have a go at ‘big companies’, KFC has very little choice here. If they ignore YFC and he becomes a major player they cant legally challenge in the future as it will be deemed they ‘gave up’ there rights. I am sure a lawyer could explain it better:)

        The questions are whether he is trying to pass himself off as KFC (one would think not), or whether he is trying to travel on KFC’ coattails (likely, in my view).
        
        The problem for KFC, Maccas etc is that if they go easy on one such, it will be used as a future precedent elsewhere.
        
        My sympathies are with KFC in this instance, so long as their actions are proportionate.

The letter below was a letter to the editor in yesterday’s The Post. The person who wrote the letter had attended a debate of Wellington Mayoral candidates. When asked the question whether they would put Wellingtonians interests ahead of their party’s political interests all except Andrew Little said yes. Little twice said no. He also spoke about his strong ties with his Labour colleagues.

“I went to the first 2025 mayoral debate at Lulu Bar on Thursday. Mayoral candidates present were Ray Chung, Karl Tiefenbacher, Rob Goulden, Kelvin Hastie and Andrew Little. During the Q&A, I asked all the candidates a “yes or no” question: “If Wellingtonians ask you to sign a document to promise that you will put Wellingtonians’ interest before your party’s political interests, will you sign it?”Every other candidate said yes. Andrew Little fluffed around with his answer, as a seasoned politician does. When pushed by the audience for an answer, Andrew said no. And he said no twice. The mood in the room preceding my question was very clear – Wellingtonians do not want party politics around the council table. Yet, Andrew Little would not commit to putting Wellingtonians first. During the evening, he spoke extensively about his strong ties with his Labour colleagues. So these are the people he is going to lean on once elected. Plus the union leaders given his strong union background. Wellingtonians, be mindful of who you choose to represent you. Do not let painful history repeat itself. We need a mayor and a council that do not have divided loyalty. Your best interest must come first.”

  It’s not widely known that any candidate for council who stands under Labour’s banner is obliged to follow Labour’s dictates if, or when, called on to do so.
  
  Prior to the 2022 election, a three-term Labour councillor in my city was informed by another campaigning group that, if he intended to stand again as a Labour candidate, the fact of that obligation to the Labour Party was going to be extensively publicised.
  
  Interestingly, that councillor reversed his intention to stand and chose not to do so.

  I never met him, he died a couple of years before my arrival, but I often think of him and what he experienced.

    My Step Father also served with the Gordon Highlanders and fought at The Somme – along with being at five other battles as recorded on his War Record, including Passendale.
    As I spent a considerable time going around all WWI battlefields I have no idea how he survived.
    My biggest regret that as a 14-15 y.o I remember reading “The Somme” which started off by stating their were 50,000 casualties on the first day. I did not know that Joe, my step father, had been involved and only found out various details after his death.

  There’s a spread of formerly horticultural land near Outram in Otago. Used to be a very productive orchard and vege growing gardens there. This land has recently been subdivided and build on with what look like fairly expensive houses. The development is right next to the Taieri River flood banks, with some sections actually ending at flood banks. There’s a history of significant floods in this area, yet someone allowed this development to go ahead.

  I mostly stopped reading NZ educational research some years ago, at which time there was a lot of theorising by radical researchers practising qualitative research in favour of promoting things Maori, but no large-scale quantitative evidence in support.
  
  These days, with the claims of Maori data sovereignty, reliable research on these matters might be rare, especially if its findings don’t support the preferred narrative.

    I am increasingly of the view that there is a growing body of activists, grifting politicians and academics who believe that a successful education of our kids is measured by the degree that they have become saturated in Maoritanga and tikanga etc and to hell with everything else, like the ability to competently read, write or count.
    
    One needs only to look at the complacency and ambivalence with which the NZ left regards our looooong tail of educational failure which has developed over the last thirty or so years.
    
    They either don’t give a rats or are completely unable to effectively reverse our decline. It has to be one or the other.

  When asked about the differences between National and ACT, Seymour said the National Party would always explain itself as a “broad church”.’
  
  We can assume that at least some part of the National party, which has sufficient representation in the 20 person cabinet, did not want that clause removed. This is not (just?) an Erika Stanford issue.

I feel sorry for my old home town, Chicago, but this has been coming for decades, as former Chicago Trib journalist, John Kass, writes, Democrat Anguish Will Only Get Worse, including this:

….after decades and decades of Democrat control of the legislature and State Supreme Court, the average retired state worker gets nearly $25,000 more than those who work to support them (meaning lowly taxpayers).

What’s that word the Greens like to use about systems that work – “Sustainable”?

More than a thousand children will be asked to undergo health screening after police charged a childcare worker with more than 70 offences allegedly linked to a childcare centre in Point Cook, in Melbourne’s south-west.

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have arrested 26-year-old Point Cook man Joshua Dale Brown in relation to alleged sexual and other offending against eight children between April 2022 and January 2023.

The other day G from the Dunny questioned me on when the wet Nats had ever voted down an ACT bill.

Well by the time I got around to considering an answer 99% of kiwibloggers had gone to bed. So in my experience if I replied then it would never have been read.

What I was thinking of was the treaty principles bill. The wet Nats never let that get off the ground. Apparently because some noisy and stupid people (lacking any semblance of a decent argument) might get angry with them.

  Not really. The agreement that act agreed to was that national would support it to the first reading. So national did exactly what they agreed they would do in coalition agreement. G said “ Point to just one bill voted down by Nats that were not part of the agreement? ”

    So Ghost the wet Nats bravely “agreed” to make sure it was a dead duck.
    
    So not “voted down” per se but killed at birth so to speak by the wet Nats none the less. No?
    
    Regardless of the method, an ACT initiative to do something immensely necessary and sensible was scuttled by the wet Nats because they allegedly were afraid of it being “divisive” (um what the hell do they call what TPM and their useful idiot supporters are up to?).

      And yet you want to blame national when this is what act agreed to. They signed the agreement that it would go to select committee. The fault is with act. They didn’t believe in it enough to make it a bottom line in the negations.

        ACT made do with what they could get out of wet as F National. Basically raising the issue as far as they could (not far thanks to the wet as F Nats). You desperately want to make G’s challenge the point. It isn’t. As I’ve already said, the wet as F Nats didn’t per se “vote it down”, so pour yourself a drink and be very happy.

        No. National needed act to form a govt, if act believed in this policy they could easily make it a bottom line. Seymour got what he wanted, to be deputy prime minister and now has no intention of remaining in politics if he’s not in government
        
        Your post was about claiming that G questioned you about what policy of act national had ever voted down. Which he didn’t, he asked you to give one policy that wasn’t part of the agreement that was voted down, so yes that is what your post was about. So yes that is what your post was about.

        Once again, my point is the wet as F nats refused to support a hugely sensible policy (establishing what the F these “treaty principles” actually are, because nobody actually knows and lefties and separatists make them up as they go along). You are still nit picking and trying to claim some weird petty victory for someone else over the mechanism by which National managed to quash this initiative (ACT couldn’t squeeze any more movement on this out of the wet Nats, OK). Third time lucky; I’ve already said that “per se” the Nats didn’t vote this down (which is acknowledging G’s “challenge”). OK? Do a victory lap around your lounge or something.

Our local paper is reporting that our rates will increase by 15.5% this year and 10% the year after.
The paper reports a total increase of 25%.p, perhaps one of our resident maths geeks can tell the correct number. I’m thinking it’s closer to 30%.
How on earth does our council justify this when inflation is around 3%?
Let’s hope the mayor isn’t planning trips to our 2 sister towns.
