  The Maorification that National are hell bent on isnt going to work out. Special treatment directed at a race will drive a sense of victimhood & entitlement. Its a harmful cocktail of permanent stagnation & ongoing bitterness.

    I am acquainted with a Maori couple who went to Europe to pursue a sport in the 1990s. They have remained there and their children are citizens of France where they have created lives. The couple return for visits every few years (their children can no longer be bothered) and are aghast at the embarrassing levels of corruption in Maori affairs and the circus like behaviour of members of the Maori Party in what passes for our Parliament. They regard whanau members as being still at war with the mythical colonists and of course with themselves. I feel for the couple but understand their revulsion at the conduct of NZ Maoris today.

    National are doing this for one simple reason: the corporates and their culture are rife with Maorification, DEI, and wokeism, and they are in mortal fear that it will be rolled back. The corporates are ‘swim with the tide’, there is no political ideology in a corporate other than the prevailing status quo, which since the last Labour government includes full-on Maorification. Corporate culture is all about following established policies and the diktats of the HR department and management. Look at where Luxon came from, his track record at Air New Zealand, and the Maorification and DEI stuff implemented on his watch when he was there. This is the key to understanding National for all the people feeling betrayed by them. They are following a corporate blueprint on behalf of the corporates.

      It is deliberate, I heard our host at a meeting state that there was a considered group in National and Nationally that believed Maori entitled to 50% and until that changed it couldn’t be undone.

    Agreed Simon, the real bitterness engendered by Nationals continued refusal to support one law for all and their apparent ongoing racism will continue well beyond the next election.
    The reason is that , National is supporting and funding a corporate NZ world that is using the indigenous race card to obtain very substantial taxpayers funding .
    This NZ corporate world is a polyglot of races who are all benefiting from taxpayers funds using the same indigenous card.
    This social structure is now well embedded in NZ

  Erica Stanford has been doing an excellent job with the unpopular, poisoned chalice, education portfolio. Stanfords sweeping detailed education changes will benefit Kiwi kids for generations.
  
  One wonders why Stanford risks her reputation with the treaty nonsense.
  
  My suspicion is National witnessed the huge bump in the polls Brash achieved with his (ill-timed) Kiwi not iwi campaign.

    My guess is this National Caucus is not that smart.
    
    My opinion is they are scared of the backlash from Maori and therefore do not have the conviction to carry out their election promises on removing Maorification.

National have their work cut out for them winning the next election. Should they lose then by 2027 you will see the same scenario play out as has played out in the UK: voters will leave both Labour and National in droves & both parties will become deeply unpopular.

        Fine but raising standards is completely at odds with promoting Maori religion – freshly invented at that for the most part. If you teach mysticism as an equal alternative to science you are failing the kids. A degree from an NZ university is declining in value already and if they stay on the current path it will be viewed as a complete joke by the societies that value education and are making progress.

  Unfortunately Luxon has tunnel vision and National are not listening.
  
  They are going to pay a price for that if they do not change their attitude and respect those that voted them into power. The latest Roy Morgan Poll has them stagnated around 31/32% of the Party Vote – not far from the dreaded below 30% range that sees leaders dumped.
  
  Beware Christopher Luxon – beware. It may be a bit cold for barbecues at the moment but there will be warm bars that will do the job equally well.

    Unless they change, then any leadership change will be just more of the same.
    Nothing will change until ALL of them feel their jobs are under threat.
    You would have thought that seeing what has happened to the Conservatives in the UK would be a wake up call for them but oh no.

      An interesting point. I have always thought Luxon the lefty of the bunch but the more I think about it, I struggle to identify who the hard right leaning members of Nationals ‘broad chruch’ are.

      Out of the rest I struggle to identfy who the more right wing candidates are, perhaps Lee and Mitchel??

        A single Left/Right axis is inadequate to describe current NZ politics. There are really two axes – an economic one and a social one giving rise to four corners in the political boxing ring (or nine sectors if you allow for neutral on each axis).
        
        The economic right wants a small well managed government, low taxes, economic growth and a stable economy.
        
        The economic left wants to grow government, print money and penalise the rich. They want to tax everything, throw money at the poor, destroy capitalism and nationalise the means of production.
        
        The social right believes in law and order, in treating people fairly, and in families, and in individual rights and freedoms.
        
        The social left wants equity, decolonisation, open prison doors, explicit race and gender policies, censorship, indoctrination of children and destruction of the family.
        
        Luxon is not left. He is economically right but socially neutral. He is all about managing government and the economy and he thinks all the social stuff is just a distraction.

  I emailed Stanford to protest about section 127(2)(e) and about her recent statements, and I got a reply! But it’s obviously a template response to the deluge of emails she’s deservedly reaped. The email “denies” a couple of things I never accused her of, but completely ignores my objections to the imposition of compulsory maatauranga and tikanga in section 127, and to her apparent belief that equal outcomes for Maori and non-Maori students can be “codified”. Plus there’s some waffle about the government’s commitment to “achievement” – something that I’d assumed would be a given for any government – and she insists “The harmful claims that have been made are demonstrably false”.

    lol, that’s a long bow. Sure the claim that she added the clause isn’t true, but the claims that she didn’t remove it are 100% accurate. There also is the fact that National fought to keep the clause in the bill when both ACT and NZF wanted it removed. When Nationals own policy at the election was to remove these clauses.
    
    Her excuse that there are lots of other clauses and removing that one wouldn’t have changed anything is totally hollow. She could have removed the other clauses too if she so desired and as promised.

    By keeping unafforable and stupid Labour policy (free school lunches and 1 year free Uni as a starter)?
    
    By adopting and promoting stupid labour policy as there own until trump shot them down (electronic media tax bill)?
    
    By expanding working for families and childcare subsidies so that more people are on government benefits?
    
    By blocking the growth of charter schools by providing essentially no funding ($10m)?
    
    Labour is a shit show and screwed the economy. National had a once in a lifetime opportunity to make meaningful change, people were willing and waiting. National chose to tinker. They have done some great things and others that may also be good (RMA changes). But on many major issues, such as our lack of finances, National have chosen to tinker. We had 6% across the board cuts in year 1. No cuts in year two and zero discussion of any further cuts. We are borrowing more then when National came in. In the last budget Nicola increased spending.

  She is blind as she sees the Maori history as told at UNI to be true.
  That will include the lie that Maori are entitled to 50% of everything and co-governance.
  
  This viewpoint is held within the National Party as they have moved away from their origins.
  As it is by Labour, Greens & Te Pati Maori.
  
  Because of that, I consider Erica to be a racist against the other 83% of us in NZ, of which there is a majority like her in Parliament.
  
  She sadly is unable to understand that Maori were disparate tribes, not a nation.
  She doesn’t acknowledge the daily lot of Maori to their pre 1840 colonial barbaric lifestyle.
  
  Their Chiefs did and knowingly ceded Sovereignty to Queen Elizabeth.
  Who certainly did not do “Partnership” with her subjects…
  
  I bet she has never read any of these authors on NZ History or the Breaking Views Blog spot.

I just can’t see that either option reflects well on him and it’s doing my head in. Whatever shall I do?

“New Zealand First has today introduced a member’s bill which would make it law that government buildings can only display the official flag of New Zealand.

Government buildings are for all New Zealanders and should not be hijacked to force cultural, woke, or divisive political ideology down the throats of others.

This legislation would ban symbols and flags of politically motivated ideology and division from being displayed on government buildings.

New Zealand First believes in one country, one people, one flag.

The “Display of Flags (Government Premises) Bill” would restrict flags being displayed on Crown buildings, local authority properties, and state schools to the official flag of New Zealand. Only in specific circumstances could an officially recognised flag of another country or territory being hosted on official business be displayed.

It would create clear rules: only the New Zealand flag can be displayed and establishes offences for those who display unauthorised flags or fail to enforce compliance.

This is about protecting our national identity, national pride, and keeping our government buildings free from political activism.”

Good on Winston Peters and NZ First for doing this. I’m hoping we will see less woke flags eg pride, Gaza and Maori sovereignty flags. This is exactly what I voted for. 😎

      Charles has never been here as King so he doesn’t have a flag as King of New Zealand, but he has been to Australia and Canada where he is also King and he has his own flags, which are distinctive from any other for both countries.

    I remember a news item, a great while back now, in which a new principal of country school explained with glee how he had gotten rid of flag raising and anthem singing.
    
    The people who did that believed children should not be indoctrinated into mindless nationalism. But it seems that has been replaced with equally mindless environmentalism, decolonisation and Pride in supposedly innate and immutable personal characteristics like sexual attraction and gender identity.

    A few years ago when my granddaughter was still at preschool we all sat down to watch the ABs play someone and she sang the national anthem, Maori verses and all. She was overcome with patriotic fervour and sang it twice!

  From what I can tell this sort of thing is really common place throughout NZ government, particulary on the Maori side. It is often put down to factors around population size, that there are only so many skilled people with the knowledge in the industry.
  
  In reality it is often a back room mates helping mates scheeme. It has gone too far and is at all levels, with Tamihere / Jackson families at the high end and people like Melanie Shadbolt (of singing to trees rort fame) staffing her oganisation with family and friends in often highly paid made up roles such as ‘photographer’, at the low end.

  Perhaps the Auditor-General should lead all anti-corruption investigations. Agencies have no appetite or capability to investigate corruption. Their investigations are performative – going through the motions (inquiries, reviews, etc). And there’s no punishment of malefactors if corruption is proven.
  
  How Chile deals with corruption: There’s an ongoing corruption investigation into a NGO, founded by a former advisor to the radical leftist President. It’s alleged that the NGO diverted government grants to illegally fund election campaigns for the President’s party. There are also accusations of influence trafficking and misfeasance (public employees and elected officials improperly authorising grants to the NGO). Prosecutors, who have constitutional independence, have been intercepting the calls and messages of defendants and persons of interest for months, plus seizing documents and devices (they also wanted a warrant to tap the President’s phone). Separate to the criminal investigation, the Justice Ministry is dissolving the NGO. The NGO used 70% of it’s income for remuneration and fees, while only 30% was used for actual programmes and projects.

    It’s a glass curtain building, constructed in 1960. Shell spent good money on it, and it’s a smart example.

Is this what National voters want? Saying that it’ll all be sorted out later is cold comfort. ACT and NZF unequivocally oppose this sort of thing. So should the National Party. I look forward to comments by the National supporters/apologists on this blog. Which raises the real question – isn’t it time National nailed its colours to the mast? Surely National can’t broad church this sort of fundamental principle forever.

She talks about lifting educational standards overall which is commendable but is merely deflecting from the concerns that so many coalition supporters have regarding the embedded Treaty ‘requirements’.     Yes. As I have being saying for the last few weeks, the review will not complete this term. I am willing to put serious money on that.
    
    Luxon has just announced the quaters ‘goals’ and completing the review isn’t one of them. If it does not complete this year it will not complete as it is far to risky to do it in an election year. National knows this better then we do. The only hope, and it is a looooong bow, is that they are planning to release it just before the Christmas break. However with Luxon and Stanford using it as cover for not doing what they promised, its highly likely they have no plans for the review to complete.

    They have people following the blogs, they know what a portion of the voter base thinks. As a response they released the ‘tough on crime’ stuff as a distractor but it turns out thats just toothless virtue signalling too.
    
    I am guessing their logic is that people like us, who are frustrated, will vote for them regardless as we would never vote Lab / Green or TPM and a vote for Act is a vote for National anyway. I think thats a dangerous assumption.
    
    With Act and NZF close to 20% support in the latest Roy Morgan poll, and National on ~32%, it wouldn’t take much for Act and NZF to become major players with National of Labour as support parties. If they dont think that could ever happen they should take a look at what happened to the water melon Tories in the UK and the Reform party.

  The thing that winds me up is that on one hand we are told that everyone learns differently, that students have different needs, that boys and girls learn at different rates and are interested in different things.
  
  But on this hand everyone must learn Maori “things”, there is no option.
  
  If a school wants to incorporate Te Ao Maori, fine. But it needs to be appropriate for the school. Some schools will have 90% interest. Others will have 10% interest.
  
  For the latter case why can’t a school offer it, with options in other things (English, Math, Science, language, woodwork) for those that don’t want it?
  
  Then there’s the horrible equitable outcome clause. That’s impossible, for all the reasons in my first paragraph.
  
  There’s zero chance of me voting national at the moment.

    I have voted National all my (voting) life. I will be 80 next year. Last election I voted Blue and Yellow. For as long as I live there will never be a Blue in my vote again. I encourage anyone to vote Yellow. But I am concerned with Winston’ apparent disdain – say hatred? – of Seymour. NZ First and ACT would be a good government.

The Victorian Govt has received a report about the Aboriginals in the state. It is a catalogue that covers some dreadful atrocities committed and mishandling that makes depressing reading.

However the recommendations are literally crazy. For instance, some controversial recommendations included a significant overhaul of the education system, which would exclude Indigenous children from attendance requirements, suspension and expulsion, as well as avenues for more appropriate cultural training.

This on top of huge compensation, recognising Indigenous groups as sovereign nations, exempting them from taxes and rates, and granting them access to revenue from natural resources and Crown land.

Australians are slow learners. They have thrown endless amounts of money at the Aboriginal problem turning them into another dependent, entitled people, riddled with alcoholism, drug taking, unemployed in hundreds, and with little real hope.

  What if these severe maladaptive problems in the aboriginal community are not fixable?
  
  They were isolated from the rest of the human race for 65,000 years or more, similar to Sub Saharan Africans ~50,000 years, tens of thousands of years before peoples in ~15000 years Americas effectively branched from Eurasian populations meaning they were not exposed to a lot of the cross-breeding and hybrid vigor that arose in a much larger at least loosely connected Eurasian population in which beneficial mutations spread around over the millennia.
  
  As an isolated and sparse hunter-gatherer culture it would be unsurprising if they had severe competitive disadvantages compared to other non-isolated populations, particularly given absence of the 10-15000 years of evolutionary exposure to brutal adaptive pressures of higher population density agrarianism.
  
  It’s a sad situation, and is sadly borne out by IQ testing typically in range 60-70. similar to much of sub saharan africa and forest dwelling hunter gatherer cultures around the world.
  
  There is no solution.

    My IQ is a hell of lot higher than 70 (well it was when I was 9 years old ), but I doubt that I would manage to survive for even 1 week in the Ozzie interior.
    
    Yet aboriginal folk managed to survive and thrive from Cape York to the Southern coast of Tasmania for thousands of years.
    
    However, when the first European explorers started venturing away from the coast, their IQs seemed to count for nothing….. unless they had the common sense to attach themselves to a bunch of aborigines.

        We can use comparisons between average IQ scores though, and make observations about the typuxal behaviors of low IQ groups, and conclude that underdeveloped places with high social disfunction in general, and high crime rates in particilar, tend to be populated by group of people with low average IQ.
        
        Compare sub-Sarahan Africa (except the White minority in South Africa), Haiti, and the bad neighbourhoods of Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit, with pre-divesity Europe, Canada and the highly White parts of America, and what’s the common racial theme? Whites have it together, while blacks don’t.
        
        This seems like the foundation of a sound and falisifiable theory of intelligence to me.
        
        It doesn’t follow that if you’re black, then you’re dumb (and vice versa), but racial characteristics have good predictive power.

      I have no doubt that they are very well adapted to surviving the incredibly harsh conditions that Australia throws up , same as the Micronesians and Amazonian Natives and Kalahari Bushmen. They all do great in their respective paleolithic environments.
      
      But it’s extremely unsurprising that they don’t do well in competition with Eurasians that have had the advantage of nearly a thousand generations of post-paleolithic evolution through the Agrarian, Bronze, Iron, Ancient, Modern and now Industrial Ages , dealing with ever more complex abstraction, literacy and technological advancements, alcohol, larger political structures etc, with brutal culling of less successful individuals and cultures (only around 40% of men had children, but many eras that dropped to less than 10%)
      
      Given that history it would be utterly amazing, supernaturally spooky even, if they weren’t languishing in comparison to peoples who’s genes have been through that gauntlet.

        It is possible to argue that a simple, low tech, semi-nomadic lifestyle and a deep connection to the environment of which you are an inseparable part is superior to an advanced, high tech, organised lifestyle where the environment is highly mitigated and seen as external or “other” to most people most of the time (until the environment reimposes its harsh reality on us periodically). That’s a case you can argue, and can only really be affirmed or denied based on a set of subjective presupposions.
        
        However, if your presupposions favour the latter (which is likely the case for most of us by default), there is no way you can then claim that the former is superior, or even equal, to the former.

        I worked with a Thai guy in Bangkok whose life was ripped apart when he got a pay rise and the bank gave him a credit card.
        First month he maxed it out and the next thing we knew he had another to get money to pay off the first one.

The media is making a meal of the cost of living crisis, rising food & energy bills etc. Not mentioned once is the Government’s interest bill, arising from Grant & Jacinda’s spend up (I’m being polite here).

I reckon Nicola should forget about chastising the supermarkets and go on the attack, reminding punters that the reason the tax take is so high & why we can’t have more nice things or more money in our pockets is the enormous repayment we’re making to the banks.

  The focus on the supermarkets, just reiterated by Luxon yesterday, is stupid. Its the same thing we criticised labour for with their ‘banking and petrol enquiries’. NZ cant support 3 major suopermarkets, in the same way Australia cant support 4. We dont have the population to allow for the economies of scale required. No number of threats and enquiries will change that. But it does allow National to look like they are doing something.

      I will often visit the smaller sized Asian supermarkets like ‘Bombay Fresh’, mainly for tea and curry ingredients they also stock the everyday groceries which are nearly always sold at very competitive prices. For any tea drinkers they have 1kg of very good Indian tea leaves for $7.60.

I remember when

Kerre Woodham has a balanced article on flooding and slash in Breaking Views.
There has been a lot of debate about the problems that are caused by forestry and slash.
However, is one of the problems with pine plantations that they are largely planted on hill country.
The ground under the trees is mostly free of any vegetation, becoming mats of pine needles.
Does this allow excessive run-off in heavy rain creating a deluge of water into rivers and streams?
Is this another reason that pine is not the best tree for hill country planting?

  Yes.
  We have had a lot of rain here lately.
  It has caused considerable road damage in places where I have never seen it before.
  Over the years, rain has caused temporary surface flooding, a few minor slips and some road washouts.
  More major damage this time.
  Much of the traditional livestock farming here has been replaced by pine forestry – largely owned by international corporates.

  When Chris Hipkins was Minister of Education, Rosemary Hipkins, his mother, an educationalist, led the introduction of the approach of “knowledge systems,” Kendall Clements explains. This is being used in schools and universities. He says the approach seems to have been propagated by Rosemary (a.k.a. Rose) Hipkins. (This is roughly about 24-26 minutes into the long video.)
  
  The approach is to teach science as one system, Maori knowledge as another.
  “We have to consider knowledge systems as equivalent, and we want students to appreciate there are different ways of looking at the world,” Clements gives as his assessment.
  
  “At my university this year, the faculty for science, for the first time is teaching a (compulsory) course where students talk about Matauranga Maori and various other aspects of Maori life — traditional practice, customs, those sorts of things — through a knowledge system framing.”
  
  If Maori knowledge is offered for teaching as well as science, then creation theory might be demanded as an alternative to evolution teaching, suggests Clements.

    I’ve always considered the cultural safety requirement for NZ nurses to be an absolute insult to the training Nurses received overseas or prior to the NZ Nursing Council being captured by Irihapeti Ramsden & co.
    
    These days in NZ our nurses seem to come from a great mix of cultures and races. They attend patients and work with medical staff from every corner of the globe…

        NZ doctors already do, when applying for or renewing a practicing certificate. That’s one of the many things I am quite happy to not to have to fake anymore.

A new, vogue health topic? Or something serious?

From next February, New Zealand GP’s and trained nurses will be able to prescribe drugs for ADHD. At present, only psychiatrists or paediatricians do this.

A Radio NZ report says about 0.6 per cent of adult New Zealanders receive drugs for ADHD. It adds: “Based on a conservative estimate of 2.6 per cent of adults with ADHD, this shows a large ‘treatment gap’ exists.”

And … “Māori and Pacific peoples are less likely to receive ADHD medications. These inequities begin early. Tamariki Māori screened for ADHD at age four are less likely to receive medication than their non-Māori peers.”

And … “prevalence is also five times higher among youth prisoners and ten times higher among adult prisoners …”

Of course.

Excitement about ADHD is Western-world wide. In the English-speaking world, headlines appear like: “At 43 I found I had ADHD,” and “Britain has 2.8 million people with ADHD”.

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and people with such a real condition have been around for probably forever. But for long we treated it like a personality quirk: “she can’t sit still”, or as a label for disruptive kids, or for kids seemingly uncontrollable by parents.

Some people with neuro-diversity problems need sympathy and support: autism sufferers — the autistic — range from unable to work to performance at genius level. The condition’s too severe to take medical specialists out of diagnosis and treatment.

ADHD, surging in popularity, is something else. Some with the actual condition will or would surely benefit from prescribed drugs. However, the sudden, West World-wide publicity surge suggests something else is going on, something non-medical.

Will ADHD boom in New Zealand if ACC offers support on diagnoses by, say, a nurse rather than a psychiatrist?

I see Peter McCullough is now peddling ivermectin as a cancer cure.

Wonderful drug, now vaccine sceptics have an alternative to western medicine for cancer treatment too.

As luck would have it (the coincidence is an absolute miracle), Peter also sells ivermectin.

  Ivermectin, ‘Wonder drug’ from Japan: the human use perspective
  
  I have prescribed the drug myself many, many times pre the WuFlu, when on assignment in Africa, to treat ‘worms’ in the locals – esp. onchocerciasis, plus strongyloides and ascaris infestations. As the paper shows, it also works well for cutaneous larva migrans and filariasis, as well lice’n’mites (pediculosis and scabies).
  
  In 2015, the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, in its only award for treatments of infectious diseases since six decades prior, honoured the discovery of ivermectin (IVM), a multifaceted drug deployed against some of the world’s most devastating tropical diseases.
  
  So, have a little bit more of a broad mind about this drug, mmkay?

    What puzzles me is that Ivermectin has been proven harmless, so why not allow off-label use? It won’t do any harm, and might do some good.

Hopefully the beat patrols in Rotorua have a positive impact on anti social behavior. We just visited for a couple of days and there was a significant number of shady people around town. Less than last time, thankfully, but still noticeable enough to feel a little uneasy at times. A few years ago while eating at the excellent Zapata Mexican cantina, a young Maori fella stood outside the restaurant staring at me for around 10 minutes. We eventually left and his eyes followed me to our car, way down the street. I actually lived there for a couple of years ~30 years ago and love the area, but thoughts of moving there ended a long time ago due to some of the unsavory locals.

Ardern’s home. Her mother has Leukaemia. Wonder if she’s reflecting on her behaviour during Covid where people couldn’t be with dying loved ones, minimising funerals, locking people up in MiQ etc etc.
