What do Muslim immigrants think?
Tomas Pueyo has collated a huge amount of public opinion data from Muslims in Western countries. He finds:
Depending on the country of origin and destination:
~10-40% of Muslims are moderate & well integrated
~20-50% are conservative, religious, pious
~25% are fundamentalists
~Of which 15% (pp) are radical Islamists
Some findings in the US:
- 50% of US Muslims think the Quran is the literal word of God, compared to 205 of Christians think the Bible is the literal word of God
- 52% of US Muslims now think homosexuality should be accepted by society, up from 27% in 2006
- 30% of US muslins think Islam is incompatible with democracy
- 92% of US Muslims are proud to be Americans
- 66% of US Muslims are very concerned about Islamic Extremism – greater than the 49% of the general public
- 76% of US Muslims say it is always wrong to target civilians 0- greater than 59% of the general public
He concludes:
In summary, the picture in the US is encouraging. Although Muslims seem to be pious, their beliefs seem reasonably well integrated with those of the broader public. They believe in democracy and don’t believe in extremism. But a sizable minority believes Islam should be interpreted traditionally and that it has a natural conflict with democracy, while Muslims suspect there’s a sizable share of extremists among them, and that worries them.
But in Europe, it is more challenging:
- 60% of European Muslims say religious rules are more important than secular laws (cf 10% of Christians)
- Over 45% say Jews can’t be trusted
- 70% of British Muslims say they are more Muslim than British
- Only 22% of British Muslims think Islam and Western democracy were not compatible
- Over half of British Muslims want it made illegal to depict the Prophet Muhammed and to make halal food compulsory in schools and hospitals
- Only 4% (!!!) of British Muslims think al-Qaeda was responsible with 9/11
- 49% of British Muslims say Israel has no right to exist
- 29% of British Muslims support Hamas and 21% support Jihad
- 30% support segregating men and women in public
- Over 40% of French Muslims say islamic rules more important than French laws
- 7% of Danish Muslims think portraying Muhammed merits death
- 30% of German Muslims say Jews can’t be trusted
- 23% of German Muslims say an Islamic theocracy is the best form of Government
It is worth noting that for most of these, these are minority views. But they are sizeable minorities – not small under 10% minority views.
