Some good law & order policies from NZ First
I like some of the law & order policies announced by NZ First. They include:
- Introduce a formal ‘degrees of murder’ regime that increases the minimum non-parole period from 10 to 20 years. DPF: This is very important as the 10 year non-parole period currently in place tends to mean that it drags down all sentences for other serious crimes such as rape and GBH
- Limit sentence discounts for factors other than a guilty plea to 10%.
- Raise standard parole eligibility to 75% of a sentence for long-term offenders. DPF: Labour once dropped it to 33%!
- New Zealand First will strengthen the ‘Coward Punch’ law so that Coward punches causing death, will require Judges to impose a minimum non-parole period of 8 years imprisonment.
- Require District Courts to proactively publish sentencing notes within 72 hours and limit final name suppression to extreme cases. DPF: This is critically important. Having all sentencing notes online is needed for an open justice system
- NZ First will defend our children and introduce tougher penalties for sexual violation, including life imprisonment for rape against children.
