Kicking Bureaucrat butt

July 29th, 2004 at 11:15 am by David Farrar

Okay so you’re a bureaucrat working for NZQA and you are informed that some students have an exam clash with three on the same day, so what do you do?

You tell those students who have spent all year studying, that under no circumstances could we be flexible, and that they simply should miss or withdraw from an exam!!!

I imagine NZQA thinks that they could do their job really well, if those pesky students were not involved.

Luckily for said students, the Education Minister can spot a potential poll downer at 100 yards, and he has given NZQA a bollocking (called a full and frank discussion) and over-ruled them.

Now for a post on the subject on hand:

I wonder why it take NZQA 6 months to determine the exam timetable – it’s not like they don’t know what subjects are available each year. Why don’t they publish the exam timetable at the begining of the year, i.e. the time the students CHOOSE the subjects they want to do, so they can avoid conflicting subjects.

It is extremely cruel to force students to choose a good part of the way through the year to miss out on one or more subjects – often you need a pass in all of them to gain admittance to the Uni course you want.
