Toll reaches 125,000

December 31st, 2004 at 8:09 am by David Farrar

Wikipedia now has the death toll at 125,000. This is the highest toll in recorded history from a tsunami.

Over US$5 million has been donated through Amazon for those who have accounts there. That goes to the US Red Cross. You can donate to the NZ Red Cross by phoning 0900 31 100 or through almost any bank branch. The Government is matching donations so every dollar we give results in two dollars of assistance.

DPF, how can the government match donations? It doesn’t have money. So basically we’re paying twice, because I don’t think the government will save on their spending spree.

Therefore Kiwi’s can better donate internationally, because if we’re generous it will lead to higher taxes.

Yes it is our money they are donating, but they have put a limit of $2 million on matching donations which is not going to change tax rates much.
