Sunday on Donna Awatere-Huata

August 28th, 2005 at 7:53 pm by David Farrar

Fascinating Sunday programme on Donna Awate-Huata. Key revelations to date:

* Allegation her legal aid application to defend the fraud case, was in itself fraudalent as she did not disclose some assets

* Wi Huata challenged Richard Prebble to a fight, when he challenged Donna over the allegations.

* Education officials were so scared of Wi Huata they would not meet with him.

Pretty interesting to see that some prominent Maori describe the Custody of Donna as racist…..well, she is banged up in remand because she insisted that she was innocent and put the system to the expense of a trial. On being found guilty it was evident that she would be held in custody pending sentencing. If she had pleaded guilty from the start she may now be on bail and looking at a home detention.

It’s not fraud DPF, it’s righting the colonial oppression that locks up a black woman for merely trying to redress the historical injustices done to her people… (http://www.nzpundit.com/archives/2005/08/28/14.08.24)

There would be delicious irony for a fraudster to be done for fraud over the legal aid application!

I think we already knew that Education officials were scared to meet with Wi Huata.

Though I am sympatico to Pita Sharples et al, I find his comments on issues like this to be bloody absurd. The Maori Party is getting bugger all coverage, not for their many and enormous gaffes, nor for their policy positions and obvious success.

I will never understand backing a person who stole money from reading programes developed in particular for Maori. Perhaps the question needs to be asked if the person was white what would the Maori Party’s reacton be?

I am sure the great bulk of maoridom are appalled at Donna Awatere-Huata, but the media chooses to highlight the comments from a few maori who incredibly find a way to defend her.

It was well known in ACT circles any critisism of Donna could end up in a “Extreme Makeover” from the Pit Bull. I know someone who saw the Pit Bull in full flight. It would have made Jake the Muss proud.
Well I was given some advice by an old boss of mine, over 30yrs ago…In business never give a Maori access to the cheque book.

As for Donna and the system being racist… Please pull your heads in. She deserves everything she gets as does anyone who breaks the law! She knew what she was doing! They are only playing this card because she got caught!!!

If DAH got more than she would have otherwise- and I am not sure she did- it might be for the following reasons.
And I believe this maybe why the MSM has also taken extra pleasure in her downfall.
1-DAH, as a Maori woman did not do the PC thing and join a lefty party, she joined ACT and confounded many of the left’s own prejudices.
2- DAH, as an ACT MP, was involved with a party that campaigns heavily on crime. And there is nothing like the whiff of hypocracy, is there?
But I saw the Sunday programme too and it seems DAH got all she deserved.
The Maori Party is simply talking nonsense again, just like it did over the Zimbabwe issue.

I don’t know if she has been sent to jail for being a Maori but god what a waste of time sending her to prison. Aside from prison not going to achieve anything a jail sentence is way out of proportion for the crimes. The system is a joke and if anyone thinks she got what she deserved they are na

    Good job i say!!!

Im a maori, and when people think they should have it any other way just because they’re maori it makes me angry.

she got 2.9mnths prison, she should have got more! Fact is, she stole over $80,000, paid her kids school fees, got an operation, brought a house etc etc..she didnt get a long enough sentence grrr..The cheek of her to even fight it! She stole off kids that need to learn how to read and write..this whole thing makes me angry. People on the benefit can get up to 7 years jail for fraud instantly and i bet none of them hold the signature to cheque books! her case is worse.

Sam you’re right on the money. What difference does her being Maori have to do with a thing? At the end of the day she stole tax payers money which was to be spent on NZ’s most vunerable.

She has gotten a fair sentence, though I think Wi should not be elligable for Home dentention.

Donnas family were angry because a much loved member was going to prison. I heard it reported they paid back most of the money before they were sentenced.

My feeling is the court wanted to make an example given the public nature of the trial. Had she been an ex-labour MP or part of the general public, I doubt it would have been anywhere near as bad.

The fact that she was an MP at the time surely means that she should have the book thrown at her – this sentence is so light it’s joke.

The reparations made by her family and friends don’t cut it either.

She’s a crook, a fake, a fraud, and she and her family need toget over their upset that she suckered them and then she got caught. She’s a nasty crim all up, that’s it.

I cannot understand why it is these people are so up in arms and fail to see why Donna has gone to jail. If anyone is found guilty of theft as a servant of the company, say a shop assistant for example, then the law will come down much more than if it were a theft. And in the same way, it is even more a sin for Donna, an elected representative, elected by the people, to steal from the people. The very people that put her in power. Even if she did pay the money back. makes no difference. She a thief. And I don

Who cares if her family felt the need to cause an uproar cause they paid most of the money back, she shouldnt have stole it in the first place!!

She was an MP, this makes ALL MP’S bad now to the public eye. As it is, we couldnt trust MR’s and she goes along and does this.

Pffftt, she didnt get a long enough sentence and she makes me sick!! If we’re going on the “im a maori” path, then i’d feel ashamed to be maori if we could get away with this shit.

the other thing is, if a person like me who has a normal job, stole that amount of money, i’d be sent straight to jail no questions asked. at the end of the day, we’re all the same, you do the crime you pay the time.

of course they’re all upset she went to jail, some of them got a shit load of that money too. school fees, a house etc etc.

She didnt get long enough. people say this justice system fails and in some ways it has because she shouldve gotten up to 7 years. she ripped all of us off, the tax payers.

Just watch people, the radicals have already started to back her, on release after lets say 9-10 months of served time she will reappear as a Maori Party Candidate. I want to know, with a conviction is she able to be a politician ever again? There is no way that this bitch or the bloody child molesting Graeme Capil should ever again be able to hold ANY PUBLIC OFFICE.
