South Island Results
October 13th, 2007 at 12:38 pm by David FarrarBob Parker has won the Christchurch Mayoralty. Exact figures not yet known.
1.43 – Parker 46,000, Wood 31,000. So much for a close race.
Results now online.
Jo Giles (former ACT) also got 14,000 votes for Mayor so CR Mayoral candidates did very well. The street cleaner got a massive 4,500 votes. Superb. Kyle Chapman got 673 and is third to last. Pity.
Tony Milne missed out on Council but got a creditable third place just 700 votes back. People say he campaigned very hard.
The Councillors are:
Independent – 7
Independent Citizens – 3
Chch 2021 – 2
Most of the independents are moderate to centre right, so not a good result for Christchurch 2021.
The Buller Mayor, Pat O’Dea has been defeated. He has been Mayor forever – he was Mayor when I was at university with his nephew 20 years ago!
Shadbolt has easily won again in Invercargill. No Dunedin result yet thanks to STV, but Peter Chin will win I am sure.
What’s interesting is that the five major cities – Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin are now headed by Mayors who are not from the left. In fact three of them are former National MPs or candidates!
Just looking at Canterbury Regional Council results. The Labour aligned Christchurch 2021 ticket won only two out of the eight positions they contested. This may make it difficult for Kerry Burke to hang on as Chair.

With “98%” of votes counted – similar to Auckland – he’s 15,000 up.

They had ’98% of the vote counted at 11.00 this morning!!

If billboards counted for anything, Tony Milne was streets ahead. When I was down in Christchurch last month, his smiling face was on nearly every intersection!
However Christchurch voters have seen past the hypocracy of the 2021 “party”, the left in drag, but not prepared to say so!

Think there are actually four Ind.Citz Councillors DPF.
The two incumbents in Riccarton/Wigram plus Mike Wall in Fendalton/Waimari and Ngaire Button in Shirley/Papanui.

Tony Milne’s fevered campaign style and the smear about Bob Parker did him no credit at all. He is still a terribly naive person. Still he put his hand up and was counted which is more than I have done and I respect him for that. The victory of the right leave me very pleased indeed.

Interesting how Auckland and Christchurch can get quick results, so why can’t Wellington be similarly efficient?

Great work David, your coverage is beating the papers.

Yes Wycroft,,
I must say, I’ll be referring to this blog during the general elections with heated fervour.
Very well done DPF

Mr. Milne fought a great campaign against difficult odds, with over 20,000 hand-delivered letters sent out in several campaigns.
His style of campaigning was bold and exciting. He is desperately unlucky to miss out by such a small margin (489 votes at this stage).
Still, the day was really won by the low-turnout – a majority of the people of Christchurch (and the rest of New Zealand) feel that local body politics isn’t relevant or doesn’t include them. Which is really unfortunate – people simply don’t realise the power their say can have on how their council treats them.
The low turnout in Christchurch City Council elections is a lost opportunity move the city into a brave new era. The vested interests who line up their voters every time again hold on by the skin of their teeth, and will continue the council’s outrageous and contemptous conduct towards many of its people.
So the incumbents who return to office should remember that their repreive only lasts three years.

Charlotte,
Because Wellington has STV.

Kyle Chapman was beaten by a communist (Byron Clark) and a pothead (Blair Anderson). I’m sure he’ll be loving that. He also finished LAST in the race for the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Boards (where 5 out of 11 candidates were elected), getting less than half the votes of the 2nd to last place getter.
For the record, Jason Orme, who is in the same fascist party as Kyle, the National Democrats, ran for Mayor of Waimakariri. He came last, 4th out of 4, with just over 1/3 of the votes of the 2nd to last place getter.

Thanks Andrew, but Greater Wellington was not using STV and there results are also pretty slow – except I see that Hutt City has come through.

JUst what were those difficult odds apart from being a leftist candidate CHCH 2021 which failed spectacularly. No body believed them when they said they would hold rates. The left are tax and spend everyone knows that especially as Woods was not saying just where she might hold the line except set up some sort of committee. Perhaps Tony should chnage over to the right and forget all the bullshit about being working class etc.

Tony Milne campaign was malicious towards Bob Boy and I cannot for the life me understand why he did not litigate against such slander . I would suggest Parker had more than enough to teach Mr Milne a very expensive lesson in manners !!! Disgusting tactics from a liarbour pull thru /drop kick wasted space nerdster .

Putting aside your characterisation of Tony’s campaign, probably for the same reason I haven’t sued over the malicious and defamatory smack that’s been thrown in my direction around here. I’ve better things to do with the enormous amounts of time, attention and money any defamation action grinds through. Mayor-elect Parker certainly has.
