And another free trade deal

November 3rd, 2009 at 10:25 am by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

New Zealand has successfully concluded negotiations for a agreement with six oil-rich Gulf states, Trade Minister announced yesterday.

The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), made up of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, is New Zealand’s seventh-largest trading partner with bilateral trade worth $3.85 billion.

Not bad. Mind you I don’t think Groser should be given time off until we have free trade agreements with every country on Earth, bar North Korea.

I think free trade with North Korea would be a great idea. We would export information to North Koreans for free.

[DPF: I’m not againgst an FTA wit North Korea. Just saying Groser can be excused for not getting one with them]

The last government imported their ideals, so we do kind of owe them something.

Some would say that because of Arab states general mistreatment of women we should not trade with them at all, but where would we get our oil!

Interested to see the details of these agreements. In particular livestock exports. It is better that we employ Hul-Al butchers, orientate the slaughter-houses east towards Mecca and butcher the beasts here. At least this provides a value-added component to NZ products.

If Tim Grosser can continue getting favorable FTA, then this is one travel-expense I am prepared to fund. If he wants to take his Missus, then he will have to pay of course.

Yeah really humanitarian for them to be held in factorys at gun point to toil away making goods all so their dear leader can collect all the money.

We would not be trading with free people, but ONLY their despotic leader who will be making the product using slave labour. All a free trade agreement will do is grow Kim Jong Il’s wealth, it will do sweet fuck all for the people, they will still be living in squalor and earning less than a $1 a day.

No, we would help more by eliminating the communist ruling elite, despots and satraps that rule that benighted country.
We could also assist by exporting to Pyongyang all members of the DPRK-New Zealand Friendship Association.

Still Kim may give us a good price on enriched uranium when we get up to speed and start building nuclear power stations.

There is diddly squat chance of us getting an FTA with nth Korea. And diddlier squat chance of us eliminating the communist ruling elite, despots and satraps that rule that benighted country.

    Groser’s good value.

The EU (as well as Australia and Korea) are in the pipeline for FTAs with the Gulf states, so there will be competition for our dairy products if the EU returns to farm subsidies, as looks likely. But still Groser has got our foot in the door.

I still think full NZ union with Australia is the best economic choice if it could be arranged. When there are four times as many Maori in Australia as in NZ, it just might be feasible.

    Does this mean cheaper petrol?

While I’m sure by Cactus Kate’s definition I am certainly a “pinko”, I’ve always liked the idea of FTAs, I don’t see why some on the left have such a big problem with them.

Redqueen, i doubt Iran, Venezuela or Libya will be turned away, they all have oil.

I have to agree with Grizz (November 3rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm). It’s better if we do the Hul-Al butchering here and then export to our Middle East customers- gives us the value added component processing and protects our livestock industry from accusations of animal cruelty by doing live sheep exports.

Its remarkable how so many over the last few years have been signing up FTA’s with us- Thailand, Singapore, China, Malaysia, the Middle East Petrol Kingdoms and now talk of India expressing an interest. Japan and the US in the future? Hope so.
I seem to remember a certain Mr Minto saying Free Trade was dead after the failure of the WTO round. Guess he didn’t count on Super Trade Minister Tim Groser and the creeping global food crisis….

Halal butchery is inherently discriminatory as it can only be performed by (preferably) Muslims or a Christian or Jew.

In fact I would argue that because of this reason alone it should be banned as being against fundamental human rights.

Signing an FTA is, of course, no guarantee of export success. Chile is a prime example – the value of our exports to that country has actually shrunk since the FTA came into force in 2006.

Grizz despite what you may have been made to believe this country is awash with oil, many wells are simply capped and will be “revived” when the price is right. Have many relations working in oil industry and there is no shortage of exploration work in the energy industries. There are Chicken Little’s around here that use to preach “peak oil” in ever second post, it’s good to see these clowns have crawled back into their caves, their predictions of doom carried about as much weight as the AGW bullshit being pushed down our throats.
