This is one Backbenchers forum they should have invited Winston Peters to.

Easy money going on iPredict for the alcohol law changes.
Government will struggle to change drinking age and bar hours, but they want to be seen to be doing something, so the tax increase is probably quite likely:

Obviously i have an interest here, but i’m all out of cash so can’t buy any more even if i wanted…

Palmer was not a charismatic leader.

Soporific might be an apt description.

@ Petermcc: Can’t see the tax hike as a goer, especially as Bill English has said he’s not keen on it. Raising the purchase age for off-sales is a more likely option where the Govt can be seen to be doing something. That would keep the purchase age at 18 in bars (ie a controlled environment) and 20 for drinking in an uncontrolled environment. Although it’s not going to stop teens getting bladdered, it will look like something has been done.

Palmer followed Lange so had a hard act to follow, and suffered from his connections with the Douglas reforms. In any case he came across as academic and out of touch with “ordinary people”, so really is just a greyer wrinklier version now.

“Commission president Sir Geoffrey Palmer said alcohol can cost as little as $1 or $2 – less than bottled water – and the saturated market had led to intense competition.”
Doesn’t this just mean that water is far too expensive?!?! $3.60 for a 750ml bottle of water! That’s the crazy part, not the fact that a beer or a vodka cruiser can cost $1 – $2.

Palmer was the PM who promised to listen and listen he did.
To the bloody Aussies selling waste of time bloody frigates.

Wasn’t he also the PM who when trying to cut bureaucracy increased it?

Nookin: Good word that “soporific”. Could well be applied to this week’s Backbenches panel.
