I’m guessing it was still standing after the quake but Civil Defence ordered its demolition due to the hazards it possed to shags.

Having just returned from a few days in Christchurch, I can say that the photographs and television images that we have all seen so far do not even get close to revealing the true extent of Christchurch’s disaster. Christchurch has changed, irrepairably, on many fronts. The photo that DPF exshibits is just one.

The Anglican Cathedral, The Timeball station, The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrement, Knox Church, my own college Chapel, and now Shag Rock and so many of the buildings that came to dominate the memories of four years of college of the fifties. I at times find myself wishing I could do a “Brigadoon” “Rip van Winkle” or whatever and just call it a nightmare.

(On a slightly related note, I would love to be there when the huge almost-broken-off rock over the west bank of the bottom of Huka falls eventually lets go 😀 )

Please , can people and the media refer to a dictionary and find out what an icon is and what iconic means. Its not a rock, its not a rugby team and its not Colin Meads.

Agree, Anonymouse’s call = winner.

Pauleastbay, mostly correct … apart from the comments about our icon, affectionately known as “Tree” or “Pinetree” Meads, and his iconic status in the NZ (or at least Waikato and surrounding districts) psyche.

And to RRM, yep … been thinking that for years. But hope it won’t happen – make a mess of the falls.

I know this is off tread but RRM I have know Sir Pinetree since the late 80’s and I must disagree with you 100%. Get the facts befotre you dribble.

A good example of how dangerous it is in parts of the CBD. I understand they’re going to knock the hotel over bit-by-bit which will take a while.

Heard ex mayor Moore on News Talk ZB about an hour ago, on a visit to parts of the red zone and it was very depressing, so much of the old city is stuffed, his considered opinion of course.
