Hone calls bin Laden a freedom fighter

May 5th, 2011 at 7:13 am by David Farrar

NZ Herald reports:

Hone Harawira has described Osama bin Laden as “a man who fought for the rights, the land and the freedom of his people”.

In tributes on Maori-language television, the leader of the new Mana Party said the al-Qaeda founder should be “honoured” rather than “damned” in death according to Maori culture.

Mr Harawira twice paid tribute to bin Laden in te reo, saying it was Maori custom to acknowledge the dead. …

Mr Harawira said on Maori Television’s Native Affairs that bin Laden had “pursued independence for his people, his family and his tribe”.

When asked if he was concerned about how such comment could be construed, he said he was Maori and “tributes to the dead are always appropriate” in Maori custom.

Actually most of his familiy had disowned him, but let’s not even debate Hone’s factual errors.

I’m going to risk Godwin’s Law and ask whether Hone would say the same thing about Hitler. I mean it would almost fit – “Hitler pursued independence for his Germanic people, his family, and his Aryan tribe”.

Labour MP Shane Jones said he did not have the same level of affection for bin Laden as Mr Harawira.

He also scotched Mr Harawira’s claim that it was Maori custom to always pay tribute to the dead.

“In the old days, a great enemy – if he wasn’t eaten – his bones were used to make musical instruments. So this romantic notion that in the old time, Maori spent hours of their time saluting the enemy was not the case.

“Enemies were turned to dust and people rejoiced, because of the suffering they had caused.”

I’m with Shane Jones on this.

The Greens should be pleased with the existence of the new Mana Party. They finally have a party that makes then look moderate.

I’m with Jones on this too, and also with Sharples:

Speaking on Te Karere, Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples was also uncomfortable about people openly celebrating bin Laden’s death.

He said utu (revenge) was a Maori custom. “But we don’t agree with the extent of the celebrations or with anyone celebrating the assassination of anyone and then the person’s body being discarded into the sea.”

He seems to contradict Harawira by suggesting the killing was utu. And I agree with comment on unseemly celebrations. The post killing propaganda (the “fog of war” doesn’t make stories up) embarrassed the US.

    Got the bastard, move on.

Hone sees himself as a freedom He thinks he will succeed by alienating everyone who can actually help him. He has to stop being driven by his prejudice and bigotry. They are major obstacles in his quest to improve the lot of the less fortunate.

His first obstacle is to overcome the fixation that their position is the entire fault of everyone else but their own.

The stupid and tragic fact about all of this is that Brash and Hone would probably describe the same outcome of their policies if they were to work. Hone was given that opportunity. He was asked what “success”meant to him. He had a huge opportunity to say something constructive. Instead he gave an answer that was all about him and what he could achieve in the elections. I may be mis-judging him, but it seems to me that this is all about the self-gratification that he gets from the battle. It has nothing to do with an ultimate outcome. That is why he sees some affinity with OBL. For OBL, it was all about the battle. There is no way that he could have expected to a achieved anything but terror from his methods.

He needs to discard the Don Quixote cloak, stop trying to be a martyr in a misconceived fight to end oppression and start to get on with people whose ultimate goals are not altogether disimilar.
He also has to restore confidence in his veracity — ie stop telling fibs.

Even more interesting is Harawira’s refusal to engage with Duncan Garner on last Weekend’s The Nation interview. Garner asked a pointed question about Annette Sykes’ celebration of the 9/11 attack; Harawira gave her a ringing endorsement whilst completely ignoring Garner’s allegation. The transcript is here:

    http://keepingstock.blogspot.com/2011/05/first-annette-now-hone.html

Sykes’ extremist views are going to become a real obstacle for the Mana Party as the election campaign progresses, and if Harawira continues to ignore them, we can make the assumption that he agrees with them.

If a comparison to Hitler must be made…..

Hitlers party, the National Socialist Workers Party, was formed from disaffected blue-collar workers. As is Hone’s.

The core of the dis-satisfaction felt by Hitler and those the joined his Nazi party was that the Jews had taken their jobs and money. Mostly the Jews of that time were middle-class merchants and bankers. Hone thinks that the white mother-f*****s man has taken wealth off him and Maori. There’s a lot of middle-class merchants and professionals among that group.

Hitler managed to breed such a body of lies about the Jews in the minds of the German people that they were convinced that the Jew was dangerous, had to be identified and ultimately wiped out – i.e. massive propaganda. While Hone hasn’t made statements that extreme, he has stated that his policies will target “the rich” (i.e. not him and his supporters) which encompasses a degree of identification and targeting of punitive policy. He is constantly repeating slogans about how everyone else is racist, everyone else is wrong, and everyone else owes him. Propaganda. Repeated again and again. There’s a core group of supporters that believe him. There’s a much larger group who wants to believe what he’s saying, so they will be sucked in.

As an aside, Brash has to get away from being on the defensive with Hone. Hone chucks out the “you’re racist Don” line, and then sits back while Brash sets about defending himself. Brash should not be sucked into denying allegations thrown about the place. It’s clever from Hone and stupid of Brash.

The President of the U$A, Barak Obama authorises the cold-blooded ‘execution’ of an unarmed Osama bin Laden(?) by a team of US Navy Seals – and calls this ‘justice’.

If the tactics and actions authorised by the Leader of the United States of America are essentially no different in practice to those of the (supposed?) ‘Leader’ of al-Qaeda – then what is (was?) the difference between Obama and Osama?

Or is U$A ‘State-sponsored terrorism’ simply above the law?

Or do you agree with the concept that ‘might is right’ – end of story?

Questions over legality of bin Laden ‘execution’

    By Greg Ansley
    5:30 AM Thursday May 5, 2011

The killing of Osama bin Laden by a team of US Navy Seals has been condemned internationally by lawyers, human rights groups, and European leaders.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has also urged the United States to provide full details about what critics have called a summary execution.

“The United Nations has consistently emphasised that all counter-terrorism acts must respect international law,” Pillay said.

In London, distinguished human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson has described the killing of the al-Qaeda leader as a “perversion of justice” that would rebound on the US.

The Australian-born Queen’s Counsel has sat as an appeal judge on a UN war crime court and is one of three jurist members on the international organisation’s Internal Justice Council.

He told ABC TV yesterday that the killing of an unarmed bin Laden was not justice. ”

He caused a lot of death himself, of course, and his own demise means that he won’t be able to wreak more havoc on the world.” Don’t these words mean that you formed a view on OBL’s place in the world and the advantages of his absence from it?
You have either formed a view based on emotion (retribution), a sense of justice or a dispassionate view that thge world is better off without him. It does not matter what the basis of your view is. You have formed it and expressed it. At least someone else had the courage of the same convictions and did something about it. You sit smugly, secretly relieved that someone else did the dirty work for you, and condemn them for their actions. You are contemptable. OBL was so far outside any notion of the rule of law that he had no rights or claims for protection from those laws.

  78. Rich Prick (1,114) Says:

Penny, Bin Laden didn’t exactly have much truck for any “rule of law”, so any liberal self flagilation over the matter on his behalf is pointless, and gets no traction round here. Do you have any feelings for the 3,000 or so souls who were denied your so-called “rule of law”? Or were they just collateral damage in a fight for freedom as Hone would have it?

The bastard is dead. Thank Allah for that.

Did I quote you correctly from your web-site? Were they your words? If those words reflect your view how do you reconcile your right to express judgment on his demise (“I am relieved [he] is dead” with the grandiose but totally unrealistic sentiments that you now advocate?

I believe strongly in the rule of law – more so than you because there are times when you consider it appropriate to flout it openly [ie when you disagree with it] – but I also believe that sometimes we are faced with extreme cases where extreme measures are justified. Killing Osama is one such instance. I would have shot Hitler as well. He was gutless and took the cowards way out.

Frog, I agree the slur on your drug law reform plocy is as inaccurate as it is stupid, but you said. “Which terrorist groups are the Greens in favour of? Go on. Name just one.” Very well, let me open the batting. How about this, Frog:
Remember soon after September 11 Keith Locke spoke at a meeting in Rotorua on a platform with Annette Sykes. This was a meeting to protest the liberation of Afghanistan.
As Keith sat there smiling and nodding his head in agreement, Sykes told the audience: “I will never forget that morning turning on my TV and seeing those planes fly into those two towers, I jumped for joy, I was so excited to see that at long last capitalism was
under attack. I was laughing, I was so happy, but then I saw those people
jumping out of the windows and it suddenly hit me, oh those poor waiters, the poor cleaners, those poor lift operators, who the greedy capitalists had employed to do all the dirty jobs were probably the people jumping out of the windows.”
Keith neither challenged nor questioned Sykes’ rant, he sat there and smiled and nodded and then led the applause when she finished.

You may not have picked it up Nookin – but I am dubious, without supporting FACTS and EVIDENCE that it was actually Osama Bin Laden that was ‘executed’?

    Where’s the PROOF?

errr… wouldn’t you also think that if it WAS the unarmed Osama Bin Laden who was summarily executed – that a HUGE opportunity has been wasted to help prove what happened on 9/11, and for him (?) to be held accountable in a court of law?

errr….wasn’t Osama Bin Laden supposed to have been the great ‘mastermind’ of the attacks on 9/11?

We are just told SO much bullsh*t in the corporate media – I am VERY cynical.

Like Suddam Hussein had ‘weapons of mass destruction’ – which was the basis of the (unlawful) invasion of Iraq?

So – why aren’t George Bush and Tony Blair facing prosecution for ‘war crimes’?

Let’s take the issue of WMD in Iraq in isolation for one moment.

What we had in this instance was a Psy-op gone horribly wrong, and is was not a US operation.

What needs to be kept in mind when we look at what has occurred is tha Iraq HAD USED cemical based WMD during the Iran/Iraq war. Not only against Iranian military targets, but against it’s own civilians.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_warfare#Iran.E2.80.93Iraq_War

So we have a co-alition of forces set to invade a country that has, on numerous occasions, not only showed the capability to deploy these weapons, but a willingness to as well. At the time of the 2nd Gulf War, It proved in hindsight that these weapons no longer existed. However, from an Iraqi point of view, it was to their advantage to maintain the illusion that these weapons did exist, so Intelligence could well have been leaked to give the impression that WMD existed, in the hope that the threat of their use would give the US forces some pause.

Top US Government Insider: Bin Laden Died In 2001, 9/11 A False Flag Operation

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under three different administrations Steve R. Pieczenik says he is prepared to tell a federal grand jury the name of a top general who told him directly 9/11 was a false flag attack

    Paul Joseph Watson
    Prison Planet.com
    Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Top US government insider Dr. Steve R. Pieczenik, a man who held numerous different influential positions under three different Presidents and still works with the Defense Department, shockingly told The Alex Jones Show yesterday that Osama Bin Laden died in 2001 and that he was prepared to testify in front of a grand jury how a top general told him directly that 9/11 was a false flag inside job.

Pieczenik cannot be dismissed as a “conspiracy theorist”. He served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under three different administrations, Nixon, Ford and Carter, while also working under Reagan and Bush senior, and still works as a consultant for the Department of Defense. A former US Navy Captain, Pieczenik achieved two prestigious Harry C. Solomon Awards at the Harvard Medical School as he simultaneously completed a PhD at MIT.

Recruited by Lawrence Eagleburger as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Management, Pieczenik went on to develop, “the basic tenets for psychological warfare, counter terrorism, strategy and tactics for transcultural negotiations for the US State Department, military and intelligence communities and other agencies of the US Government,” while also developing foundational strategies for hostage rescue that were later employed around the world.

Pieczenik also served as a senior policy planner under Secretaries Henry Kissinger, Cyrus Vance, George Schultz and James Baker and worked on George W. Bush’s election campaign against Al Gore. His record underscores the fact that he is one of the most deeply connected men in intelligence circles over the past three decades plus.

And at the end, talking about Rodney Hide’s ousting, he comments, “If that’s pakeha politics, then no thanks”.

No, Hone, it’s not “pakeha” politics any more than the problems experienced by the Maori party are “Maori” politics. What the ACT party does is not dictated by an over-riding “pakeha” policy.

If that’s the level of damage control his minders do, he should fire them.

Although, have to say, watching the interview last night it did strike me that Hone had obviously been told by advisors to tone down his act. He came across – at times – as almost reasonable, almost thoughtful.

Of course, that’s only in comparison to the way he normally acts :)

But unfortunately for Hone, one 20-minute performance isn’t enough to convince me that he’s done a complete 180 from his performances over the last 20 years.

Te Reo Motuhake o Te Tai Tokerau
    Thursday 5 May 2011

On Tuesday when I was a guest on Te Karere I was asked to comment on the death of Osama Bin Laden.

As Maori we do not speak ill of someone who has died even if such a person has done bad things.

My mihi to the Bin Laden’s family was seen by some as support for Bin Laden’s actions.

This was a mistake and was not intended. Using terror for political reasons is never acceptable.

I apologise for how I expressed myself.

Sure they do, and he sounds like one, the conspiracy theory nutter that is.

“Pieczenik cannot be dismissed as a “conspiracy theorist”. He served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under three different administrations,”

So what? How does that make him immune to stupidity?

Sadly conspiracy theorists, who suffer from self-imposed stupidity, come from across the political spectrum, as the Birther movement attests to.

Merely because Pieczenik held several government jobs does not give him any serious credibility.

Nor does having a an Mit degree make him any less prone to mindless stupidity. After all, Noam Chomsky has several degrees, and still writes laughable conspiracy theory shite.

So I stand by my observation that your site is primarily a vehicle for far left nutters and conspiracy theory kooks.

Major Earthquake Strikes Near Christchurch – Was HAARP Technology Responsible?
Updated: 7 April 2011 For those who are new to this area who are wondering why this question is being raised on this website, it is so because chemtrails are used with HAARP technology, (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program), and this technology can be and is used to cause earthquakes. Furthermore, a chemtrail was apparent on the day of this quake, in the quake zone, during the TV3 news.

Gosh it is so exciting thanks PB (oops sorry too much info) I just can’t help myself.

Discovery Channel just played a very sombre, very emotional documentary on families of victims of the World Trade Centre terrorist attacks. One lady was overwhelmed when they found her sisters teeth (something to bury), another Firefighter was overcome with emotion when they finally found his brothers decomposing body a month after the attacks….

I’m not easily upset but I was certainly moved by this documentary. I just wonder what PublicWatchdog, Magic Bullet and all the other nutjob terrorist sympathisers and conspiracy theorists would make of it??

“Oh well – don’t worry about the truth then.”

We have already established that you do not have “the truth”. You totally failed to provide one piece of real verifiable evidence about your 911 claims when asked to.

Conspracy theory claims are opinions, not truth.

If the above doco you talk about is based on John Pilger’s work it is not reliable. He has made false claims in the past and been caught doing so.

Two examples: he claimed the Afghanistan invasion was really about an oil pipeline, not bin Laden. Turns out the pipeline idea in question had been ditched well before then and was already being planned for another, unrelated country that was stable and peaceful. So he either lied or got his facts wrong.

He has also claimed that there are no political prisoners in Venezuala (he’s a big fan of Marxist thug Hugo Chavez). Yet every major liberal-left human rights group in the world has said there is. Is he lying? Is he stupid and blinded by a rabid anti-American and anti-Western ideology that turns his brain to mush? Is he being paid by Chavez?

Who knows, but a reliable source of information? Hell no.

When he was interviewed here in NZ by a genuinely objective journalist and she asked him to back up his claims he couldn’t and instead stormed out of the interview like a petulant child.
