Labour’s politics of hate Add this story to Scoopit!.

Whale has uploaded the audio of senior Labour MP David Cunliffe saying:

I have thought that if Judith Collins was the last woman on earth, the species would probably become extinct.

That has to be the most disgusting personal attack by an MP on another MP in recent times. There is just simply no excuse for an MP to say that on radio. He’s insulted not just Judith, but also her husband, and in fact her children. Can you imagine having to hear the man aspiring to be our Minister of Finance say that about your mother?

That is a mustache on a woman!

Can you imagine having to hear the man aspiring to be our Minister of Finance say that about your mother?

Well, the man who actually IS our Minister of Finance got snapped rorting the housing allowance, so meh., sticks & stones may make cunliffe look like a fool, but not the only fool in the house…

    [DPF: 10 demerits. Total trolling]

  2. Mighty_Kites (27) Says:

I hear a pot and a kettle, it would seem that they are calling each other black…

    .. with a vengeance

  4. Lindsay Addie (1,005) Says:

All this week I’ve the idea in my head that Labour is like a boxer who are trying to knock themselves out and instead of the opponent……

  5. Kimble (3,178) Says:

Well, the man who actually IS our Minister of Finance got snapped rorting the housing allowance, so meh.

    Nice trolling. DIAGF

  6. libertyscott (302) Says:

and he wonder why some call him silent “T”

I’ve experienced his nastiness first hand, he really is quite vile.

  7. RRM (4,639) Says:

    Nice trolling. DIAGF

    YAAHS

  8. kino flo (70) Says:

Would it be any different if Cunliffe made the same comments about Brownlee, or Mapp, for example? DPF, do you think it’s more offensive because the Minister concerned is a woman?

  9. John Ansell (811) Says:

The existence of Judith’s children would appear to contradict the member’s assertion.

  10. emmess (1,006) Says:

Damn, I was hoping Silent T would be the next leader of the opposition

  11. Kimble (3,178) Says:

DPF, do you think it’s more offensive because the Minister concerned is a woman?

Your education would be better advanced if you started with the observation that it is more offensive because she is a woman and then investigated why that is.

  12. Clint Heine (1,401) Says:

So all you have RRM is a lame come back because somebody else did something too? Wow, you must be in the Labour Party brains trust.

But thanks for explaining why you fully support the attacks on a female MP.

We can play this game as long as you want, but you have no shit show of coming out looking good.

  13. kiwi in america (1,701) Says:

I see Mr Cunliffe has graduated with honours from the Trevor Mallard Darien Fenton School of acceptable political discourse.

If the MSM pick up on this there’s 2-3 days of media narrative taken up with the requisite National front bench outrage and subsequent grovelling apologies. This against the backdrop of the various dissections of Labour’s costings. Could be a tough few days at the Goffice next week.

The clip was a reminder of why Paul Henry is such an attractive media personality – his discourse on Maturia Turei was priceless!

Shane Jones and Andrew Little will be smiling right now.

  14. tvb (2,637) Says:

Judith Collins is not afraid to take Labour scalps and I imagine she will get a few more before her career is over.

  15. Pete George (13,379) Says:

Cunliffe has hinted at a nasty streak before, this is further confirmation.

I thought Henry’s comments on Turei were cringy too.

  16. Positan (286) Says:

In former times, we attributed such loathsome conduct to lack of breeding.

  17. Chuck Bird (2,227) Says:

Although i am ACT member I knew Judith reasonable well and meet her husband on a number of occasions. I believe she has just one son. While she engages in robust debate in the House she definitely feminine privately.

The one excuse Cunliffe could have was that it was an off the cuff remark and a poor attempt at humour. Let us see if he man enough to offer a genuine apology to Judith and her family.

It will be interesting to see if the MSM follow this up like if an ACT candidate 45 on the list made an inappropriate comment.

  18. barry (772) Says:

Ive heard more than once the belief that the correct way to spell Cun_liffe is with a ‘T’ – it seems there good reason to think that this is true…………………

  19. Chuck Bird (2,227) Says:

“I thought Henry’s comments on Turei were cringy too.”

Paul Henry in not a senior MP wanting to tell the peasants how to raise their children for the state.

  20. Inventory2 (7,651) Says:

Chuck; Cunliffe can’t use that excuse; it was his flippant introductory comment about Paul Henry and Metiria Turei that started the whole business.

  21. Falafulu Fisi (1,895) Says:

Mr Cunliffe should look in the mirror and try to confirm to him, if in fact the natural selection or evolutionary process had succeeded or not? Obviously not. Individuals in a population with no appealing looks supposed to be eliminated via natural selection since their genes cannot be be passed on to the next generation as they’re not fit to survive naturally.

  22. Chuck Bird (2,227) Says:

IV2 I am being generous. My main points were he offer an apology and will the MSM raise the issue with him next time they do an interview..

  23. Scott Chris (4,194) Says:

Yeah, well Cunliffe just lost his chance to become future Labour leader. Pretty soon Goff’s successor will be by default, the last person standing.

I’m glad an issue is being made of this. I’d like to see personal attacks of *any sort* become culturally unacceptable for MPs by general consensus. If the childish and petulant behaviour in the parliamentary debating chamber were to subside, perhaps MPs wouldn’t be regarded with such disdain by the general public. Not holding my breath though.

All the same, I’d rather be called ugly than be called a liar or a cheat or corrupt or stupid. I’m sure Ms. Collins is man enough to brush off this comment. ;)

  24. MyNameIsJack (2,415) Says:

10 demerits to RRM for stating teh truth, whilst another half dozen or so demented Rightwhingers accuse Cunliffe of being a cunt without the slightest jerk on their chains. Must be an election on and Natioanl starting to look shaky.

I’d agree with Cunliffe, but I think he;s wrong, a better candidate would be Paula “Pull the Ladder Up After Me” Bennett.

[DPF: And that is 60 demerits and a holiday. You really are stupid aren't you]

  25. BlairM (1,669) Says:

Perhaps Cun*liffe should check out his own front bench before having a go at Gamekeeper Collins. Or indeed his former Leader. They’re not exactly a bunch of beauty queens by comparison are they?

  26. smttc (289) Says:

Keep it up Jack. That’s stirling work you’re doing here.

Has it occurred to you that the demented rightwingers aren’t running for office? It’s Cunliffe who’s trying to win votes you numpty.

  27. George Patton (247) Says:

I wonder what the sisterhood think of Cunliffe’s comments?

The real point worth thinking about why Cunliffe is going nasty.

    Is he:

Trying to deflect away from Labour’s costings by saying something controversial?
    Desperate for attention?
So under pressure that he’s not thinking about staying on message?
Aware of the huge defeat awaiting Labour and not caring about the consequences of what he says?

    What do people here think?

  28. Ross Miller (1,484) Says:

Judith Collins is married and has children. Most of David Cunliffe’s female colleagues arn’t and haven’t for a whole variety of reasons.

  29. Manolo (6,513) Says:

    What do people here think?

All of the above, George. All of the above.

  30. Positan (286) Says:

re Scott Chris: “I’d like to see personal attacks of *any sort* become culturally unacceptable for MPs by general consensus.”

Hear, bloody hear !!! As “representatives” such miniscule-minded cretins don’t in any way represent my views/ideals. Worse, they leave me seriously questioning their judgement potential and how it would be applied in all other matters – in particular, to really important issues/things.

  31. ben (2,323) Says:

I’m struggling to see the issue, really. The folks over the the Standard regularly demean themselves with faux outrage, and now its over here too. Cunliffe was rude at a personal level about an opponent – isn’t that politics?!

  32. smttc (289) Says:

George, it is very simple. When Labour say it is about policy and not personality they lie. They know they cannot win on policy (NZers are not going to buy a CGT or tax and spend policies) and they know they cannot win this election anyway. So they go for personal attacks hoping some mud will stick. Hence Goff calling John Key a liar on national TV. Thankfully NZers have wised up to Labour.

  33. Scott Chris (4,194) Says:

    Which is worse:

What Jack just got 60 demerits for or what Steve said last night, and got no penalty for?

    >>Steve (1,951) Says:
    >>November 4th, 2011 at 10:15 pm
    >>At the risk of demerits or ban I post this:

    >>Super-Dog !!!

    >>A commercial farmer in Zimbabwe has had his Rhodesian Ridgeback
    >>cloned and added a silicone chip….

    >>The results are truly breathtaking – the dog is now up to 10
    >>niggerbytes per minute….

    >>[DPF: No more jokes like that please]

  34. smttc (289) Says:

Scott, I think you will find MNIJ has been accumulating his 60 demerits for a while. It was not a one off hit for his post on this thread.

  35. David Farrar (1,589) Says:

MINJ’s comments were directed at an individual. That always gets pinged worse. It’s like the difference betwene someone saying “the left are cunts” and “X is a cunt”. Both unacceptable, but one is worse.

Considering the post was specifically about how unacceptable a comment of that nature was, MINJ went and made one.

  36. Scott Chris (4,194) Says:

David Farrar says:- “MINJ’s comments were directed at an individual. That always gets pinged worse. It’s like the difference betwene someone saying “the left are cunts” and “X is a cunt”. Both unacceptable, but one is worse.”

I accept the fact that Angry Jack probably had it coming. I was more concerned with the lenient treatment Steve’s joke received.

The joke is truly appalling within the context of modern enlightened society. Jack’s comments were innocuous by comparison IMO.

  37. tom hunter (3,075) Says:

A future Labour PM circa 2014/2017, when his warm and compassionate desire to help poor people will override any personal defects.

It’s not just that the lefties, especially in the media/talking head class, will forgive and forget as long as Cunliffe continues to push forward the ideology. It’s that incidents like this will not be used for self-improvement (except for media training) or an analysis of the political and ideological echo-chamber that produced this.

What? You’re expecting shame and meaningful mea culpas from Cunliffe and his enablers? You’re expecting assessment of themselves and their representatives, matching them up to their own standards about misogyny (or racism or any of the other tropes)?

    Ha!

Those standards are for other people and actually they’re not really standards. They’re political and ideological weapons to be used or discarded as needed. The only real standard of the left is obtaining political power – because once they have, that’s when the good things start happening. It’s something that all right-wingers should remember instead of standing around looking shocked and saying How could a left-winger, who professes X,Y,Z, do or say A, B, C?.

As an example – and one in this area of male-female relationships – Don Surber in the US takes a look at response of NOW (National Organisation of Women) to sexual harassment allegations against Clinton in 1998 – and their response to the allegations against Herman Cain right now. In 1998 NOW basically gave a big kiss-off to the case Paula Jones brought against Clinton, which had a woman standing up in public and making detailed accusations of some very blatant and sordid behaviour from Clinton, and which saw her winning every cent she claimed – while today they burble about:

Setting the Cain campaign’s utter disregard for the facts aside, it’s outrageous for anyone to suggest that sexual harassment allegations represent political smears to be dismissed rather than the bravery and dignity of women simply trying to go to work.

This morning, Mr. Cain made a statement saying: “Yes, I do have a sense of humor. Some people have a problem with that. Herman is going to stay Herman. Thank you very much.” Feminists will continue to closely follow this story with the seriousness it deserves.

Yeah right. As long as he’s a member of the GOP.

For a local example, look at how the far-left feminists are dealing with a nasty little sexual predator in their midst. It’s all about the efforts being made to challenge his behaviour, which will not involve the tar and feathers they’d break out were he a right-winger.

Hypocrisy? Double standards? Two-faced behaviour? Total contradictions between words and actions?

Forget it. As a right-winger you won’t need to waste time appealing to such things or asking yourself how someone like Cunliffe could be so awful in the face of his party’s and his ideology’s endless proclamations and implications about their “high” standards, “progressive” visions and innate decency – as long as you remember that their only real standards are obtaining power and destroying you.

  38. wf (98) Says:

I thought Steve’s joke was outrageous and non-pc, and it made me laugh.
    No malice intended.

Cunliffe’s remark was not the slightest bit funny, and revealed his ill-breeding.

Jim Mora yesterday referred to the ‘ngati literati’ which I thought was fun . . . .

  39. Kimble (3,178) Says:

I’d like to see personal attacks of *any sort* become culturally unacceptable for MPs by general consensus.

It already is for one side, and it used to be for the other side too. Now the only time you can expect Labour to remain civil is when a political opponent has just died. But you wouldnt want to stake your life even on that.

  40. Fairfacts Media (276) Says:

Well, I have met Judith Collins and she is a magnificent lady.
Liarbour should be ashamed for Cunliffe for stooping so low.
Cuntliffe has embarassed his side big time.
Liarbour truly are the nasty party.

  41. Rat (117) Says:

    I probably would bang her.

But she would have to really really be the last female on earth
