Australian Labor goes for the racist approach

This is the cover of a brochure put out by the Australian Labor Party against Liberal candidate Carolyn Habib (who was born in Australia incidentially).

Some may argue it is just using her surname, but it is clear the effect they are going for with the following aspects:

  • No use of her first name (Carolyn)
  • The bullet-riddled crumbling wall which looks like a Middle East warzone
  • The military style font

Also the reverse side doesn’t use a photo of her, but a sinister silhouette.

Very nasty stuff.

Indeed, the Left are quick to do this when it suits. It reminds me of David Cunliffe mocking Pansy Wong’s accent.

Yeah, calm down DPF. Next you’ll see a cloud that looks like homophobia.

If we think the Left here are nasty, they have nothing on the left in Oz. it’s out and out hate speech, and notably from journalists.
The ABC are being sued for putting a photoshopped picture up of Chris Kenny fucking a dog. They could have apologised but didn’t so now they are the ones who are going to be fucked.

The *really ironic* thing is that it was a *Labor* govermnment that allowed tens of thousands of immigrants (most of them from the Middle East) to flood into Australia via boat. Talk about hypocrisy.

    Pretty sick.

But (duxton) let’s not pretend this sort of thing is unique to the left… remember when Maoris from south Auckland were going to drive up the new motorway to steal your TV…? Eh? EH??

Remember, this is a campaign ad in the South Australian state election, not a nationwide federal election. The influx of middle-eastern immigrants who have become such a factor in, say, western Sydney electorates is not a factor in Adelaide.

I’m really not surprised at this. At times the ALP disgusts me. And I’m a leftie!

The only difference between the Australian and NZ Labour parties is that the Rainbow Branch doesn’t call the shots across the Tasman. Otherwise, both organisations are full of corrupt unionists, bush lawyers, and endless mediocrities.

Both share the same desire to bend over to the Greens, too.

    Hmmm! Thought so!

    Goes with the territory.

Labour/Labor only oppose racisim/sexisim when it suits them. If it advances their interests, it’s alright. And they have the shield of sanctimony on permanent stand by.

Not sure it’s that clear cut. Alternative arguments that they could and might say:
    1. They think her policies are making Australia like a prison camp, hence prison camp imagery and fonts
    2. They know she’s a relatively attractive blonde lady, so they’re hardly going to put her photo on it
    3. They have nothing positive to say, so they’re going with an attack ad.

I think they should have thought a bit about potential negative implications, the same as you’d be careful if you used language that implied someone was jewish or brown or any other things that could be misinterpreted. I’m not convinced that they definitely did this deliberately (although if someone has that evidence, that’d be pretty funny to see come out).

Racism?!! What a bunch of bullshit! Since when did this blog turn into MSNBC?!

You are allowed to use imagery to make a political opponent look sinister you know. I can’t see anything there that could be stereotyped to any specific ethnic group.

You’ve been hanging around Wellingtonians too long…

Not necessarily a fan of ALP, but unless the style of this publication is specific to Habib, I think it’s a stretch to call it racist.

From one of the Aussie news sites

In an interview on ABC 891 radio this morning, Ms Habib said she thought the flyer was very offensive and un-Australian.

You’ve got to love the number of times Aussies refer to something they don’t like as being “un-Australian”

But, but… they used a “military style” font (ooooh, scary!) and a “bullet-riddled wall” (which doesn’t appear to have any bullet holes).

AND THEY DIDN’T USE HER FIRST NAME. Wow. That’s like using the n-word in some cultures!!!

It reminds me of the time when Chris Matthews (?) tried to claim that the word “Chicago” used in reference to Obama was racist. People like to see racism in everything these days. Apparently DPF does too.

It doesn’t matter what side of the political fence you are on – unwarranted race-baiting is not cool. And this is what Farrar is doing here.

While I agree that it looks pretty damn bad, however, context counts.
What do they use in other brochures? Do they always use the candidates last name or just in this case?
Do they use similar fonts and backgrounds?

Or is it just for this candidate?

If it is really just for this candidate, I would tend to agree with you.

Then again, Australians being racist, where’s the news there?

Shows how low Labourites are . . . these goons allowed, and have championed, Muslims by the thousands, in the quest for their votes. They, and the losers here, are no different.

Its silly to do this when some of the substance such as 18% rates increase are definitely valid points.
