Man bans catching on

May 3rd, 2014 at 5:25 am by David Farrar

Stuff reports:

A at one of Hamilton’s public pools is in the works to lure more women into the water, but critics have slammed the idea as “separatist thinking”.

Under a proposal being worked on by city council staff, men could be excluded from the Gallagher Aquatic Centre during twice-weekly women-only swimming sessions.

The initiative is tipped to be launched in June.

A women-only programme was piloted at the aquatic centre last year but was canned after swimming numbers dropped away.

Council swimming and recreation manager Mathew Bayliss said staff were still assessing public demand for the proposal.

“We’re confident if we relaunch this programme it will be successful as we will be proactively pitching it to the community,” Bayliss said.

The women-only sessions could be up to 90 minutes long – during which time men would be banned from the aquatic centre.

That’s fair enough – so long as male ratepayers no longer have to fund the pool.

Sorry, but what is so unusual and upsetting to you about two weekly women’s only session of 90 min in a public swimming pool?
Not half the time, not even two whole days, but twice a week for just 90 minutes.

I bet that’s the norm in every civilised country.

    Big fat hairy deal.

If you really are so upset about it, maybe you should lobby for twice weekly men’s only sessions. But only if you attend those sessions regularly.

Please do, if you think there is demand for such sessions where men can swim safely amongst themselves twice weekly, please do lobby for it.

I bet you no one would object!

Pathetic. I’m out of shape and I wouldn’t to be seen half undressed by anyone, let alone women and dudes who are more ripped than me. Can I have an entire rate-payer funded pool to myself?

Seriously though, I’m not going to blame other people for me being uncomfortable because I’m insecure as hell about how I look. If there’s some sort of safety risk of having men at the pool in the first place then an outright and total ban is more logical than a time-limited one.

If one reads the full story it is clearly about catering for a religious minority.

This is all about special consideration for muslims who have come to this country and are not prepared to merge into OUR CULTURE!

Come to New Zealand and if you don’t like it PO.
Don’t impose your culture and religious regime on US.

I have mixed feelings on this. Firstly I deplore any gender bans of any kind but I can understand some women preferring not to be stripped off (so to speak) in view of men, for various reasons. So, I can’t see a problem with an hour or two here and there being set aside for women only in a public swimming pool. If they want to balance it they could also have men only sessions but I don’t think men have the same problems in this regard as women. It certainly wouldn’t worry me, and I’m of the older variety, to have mixed sessions. Perhaps a poll should be taken to see what people really think.

    Go Girlpower !!

Actually, all joking aside, I can understand the move. Some women, especially those trying to regain lost fitness, loose excess weight etc, may feel intimidated by having to be scantily clad in front of males. In the interests of fitness and encouraging more people to exercise, I think it is a good move.

At some time or other we have to accept that males and females are different – we will NEVER be the same – better to embrace that difference and learn to understand it, than try to pretend it doesn’t exist.

I can understand women only sessions but a total ban from the pool during that time? Ludicrous. What will these women do once they learn to swim and go to the beach? Ask all the men to evacuate or advert their eyes for 30 minutes?

I do believe Wiseowl has hit on the main reason. If it’s for cultural reasons, by all means maybe a said cultural could consider building their own pool to teach their women how to swim. Again, as mentioned above, good luck at finding a Muslim only beach.

I don’t think this initiative is progressive enough. We need to go further with targeting and segregation the sexes. Women should not be able to vote. For obvious reasons. When weak people have power they invariably abuse it.

Anyone from Hamilton here? You can fight this by showing the council pictures of Muslim women swimming with men (you can find a few such photos on the web). That will *prove* that this is not needed.

I think you’ll find they are private companies, which is the crucial difference.

A private swimming pool can discriminate in any way it wishes, but a public utility may not.

However, I’m glad you agree that the private sphere should be able to discriminate in any way it sees fit, including employment opportunities. To be consistent you must agree that private companies can discriminate on grounds of race or sex, or any other reason they like.

I am fully aware that it was promoted by a religious group, however, as a woman, and one that is over 50, I can understand the reluctance of some females not to want to parade a large percentage of their body’s in front of men. I know for a fact this aspect prevents many women from using public swimming pools for exercise, which is sad, because swimming is an excellent form of exercise, especially for tired old bodies.

Strange thing is, the men I have spoken to about this all say they do not use such pools for perving, and actually appreciate the females that make the effort to increase their fitness in this way. It is probably more of a female perception, than it is a real problem – but if it helps promote exercise for fitness, then it has to be good, cause believe me, there are plenty that need it.

How bad is DPF’s hatred and prejudice ? When someone addressed a post to me complaining about conservative muslim dress standards I posted an article (written by a jew) complaining about conservative jewish dress standards. I got demerits for posting OFF TOPIC !

This on a site where Morality Patrols, acid attacks, beatings and treating women like dirt is considered okay with not one single word of condemnation because it was done by the self declared master race of Jews. David Farrar is okay with this and he IS okay with religious hatred directed at certain groups. He is in it up to his god addled eye balls and actively promotes it. If you do not speak of the master race in only reverential terms DPF will concoct a way to demerit you. No amount of abuse will get christian and jewish bigots censored.

That’s because Stormfront is a site literally run by neo-Nazis.

This on a site where Morality Patrols, acid attacks, beatings and treating women like dirt is considered okay with not one single word of condemnation because it was done by the self declared master race of Jews.

Alright, now you are posting Nazi hate speech. Go frequent some other part of the internet, you callow troglodyte.

No amount of abuse lies or accusations will attract censorship [from David] if they are directed at someone who does not share Davids religious views. Take your god-goggles off and open your eyes.

Hence, personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that differ from societal norms and expectations. Those diagnosed with a personality disorder may experience difficulties in cognition, emotiveness, interpersonal functioning or control of impulses. In general, personality disorders are diagnosed in 40–60 percent of psychiatric patients, making them the most frequent of all psychiatric diagnoses.

Let’s start with the religious and the ultra-Orthodox, who mostly all ensure that children are modestly dressed. That is to say, gangs of men, rabbis, scholars of the Torah and interpreters of God and the Holy Scriptures – from the Haredi yeshivas to the Jewish homes – are teaching their daughters, not their sons, to cover themselves up completely. Because of what? Not from the scorching sun or the wrath of an angry God, but from men, so that, God forbid, they should not have what they call the “evil urge.”

Therefore, those same rabbis of a nation, teachers of a generation and shepherds of the flock, hold a grave pedophilic outlook on life and on the world. This outlook sees young girls and adolescent females – every young girl and every adolescent female – as sexual objects in the eyes of grown men. This is pure pedophilia.

And that’s not all. Instead of taking responsibility for their pedophilia, those faithful pedophiles are projecting their own pedophilia upon the young girls and teenagers who are the objects of their desire, forcing them to cover their bodies because they – the grown men – see every girl’s lock of hair as a lewd object, and every milk tooth as something that arouses lust.

I swam at a public pool for years and there were times when the lanes were cut down to two or three because some people in a group were doing non swimming exercises or else some elite swimmers were designated a couple of lanes for their use only.
Obviously regular swimmers would need to be advised and the closure would need to be at off peak times.
But if women wanted to have the pool to themselves between ,say, ten and eleven am, I wouldn’t have any problem with that.

so long as male ratepayers no longer have to fund the pool.

An opinion predicated on an assumption there is no good reason men would have for helping women, in this instance.

I don’t know much about the logic of this idea, I assume it’s because women are often subjected to leering and offensive comments from men that can be threatening and discomforting and the concept is of offering women an opportunity to relax in assurance it cannot happen.

As a male who is disgusted by those who insult and abuse others I’d be perfectly fine paying a share of making some places, on occasion, calmer and safer for women for a while.

Remembering I’m capable of making judgements of what is appropriate and when suggestions of helping people may expand into undeserved privilege and obstruction of others and may revisit an opinion as facts change.

This reminds me of a joke I heard on radio recently about people in the UK complaining at the suggestion of gender separated classes in schools – decried as an attempt by Muslims to impose on the British – where the tradition is gender separated schools. My point being I’ve often heard it suggested that in otherwise integrated schools separating classes for Math may help girls who won’t feel pressured to be pretty and not outgoing, and separating classes for English may help boys who won’t feel pressured to be manly and reserved.

Occasionally forgoing something to help others is not a vice to insult by pretending no one ever has a part to play in helping others.

The most vile insults accusations and lies are okay, if you are on the side of gods chosen ones. Demerits shows someone banned for being an “anti semite”. David clearly does not know that semite does not mean Jew, but ignoring that, who has been banned for being anti Muslim, anti Catholic, anti anything at all ? This indicates he buys the self serving religious fable that god likes jews best, because the book they [jews] wrote so says so. Absurd nonsense. This is 2014 not the bronze age Middle East.

If it is for Muslims then I’m totally against it because I feel people should not be allowed to emigrate to this country unless they fit in with what we have here and don’t expect us to change things for them – like they have in the UK, for instance. If people can’t fit into our way of things then this country is not for them as far as I’m concerned.

However, it may not be for Muslims at all. However one post did say that people don’t need to get into scanty swimming costumes and can swim more covered up. I think that perhaps this is the answer and we don’t need sessions for women only. If they are embarrassed about their bodies in front of men, then let them cover up more. They could still learn to swim.

The proposal is by Kiwi women – for their own reasons, and i think it is a reasonable request. A woman said she would like it because she is stil overweight from her child-bearing, and is self concious.
The news channel then got a comment from a muslim woman, who agreed that it would be good because of their views on female modesty.
No hint of Muslims pressing the issue – simply agreeing with it.

Thanks, Wiseowl, I’ve now read the full report. I had only read what was written here and the bit about Muslims was left out. So yes, the whole thing is totally ridiculous and I’m therefore against it. I had thought at first that it was just for women in general but I can now see that it is geared towards Muslim women as well and that’s probably the main driver for it. If they don’t learn to swim because they can’t be seen by men, then that’s got nothing to do with me or this country. They should fund their own private pool and not expect the rest of us to do it. We are not in the business of public funding for religious beliefs.

However, I do know there are ordinary women, especially those who have had a number of children or for one reason or another are embarrassed by their bodies, and I do feel for them. However, as one person suggested above, they don’t need to wear skimpy swimsuits and can clothe themselves in more, yet still learn to swim.

You’re just getting all snarky because you know you not going to survive the Talibanisation of the People’s Democratic Socialist Republic of Aotearoa…

Yoza, you know the country’s new name will have to be Arabic, the language of Islam. The vowels splurge of “Aotearoa” wouldn’t suit the hundreds of millions of brothers whose mother tongue is Arabic, a Semitic language that sounds guttural to many foreigners.

However, more important, Yoza, you would have to be circumcised. Better a snip next week than the full chop (through the neck) later.

Back to the main point. Why don’t the Hamilton Muslims just hire the baths for closed sessions? Big ladies who want privacy from male eyes could do the same? Born-agains could also do this for baptise-athons. Next thing, some entrepreneur would be promoting sessions where men and women actually swim in the same pool.

Setting public sessions in publicly owned pools on gender lines is the thin edge, however. Next could be beaches. Then local-body-owned gyms, or perhaps these already have women-only sessions.

Already there are the beginnings of segregated schooling. What about segregation in supermarkets for halal/kosher and non-halal/kosher food.

No doubt about it though, Yoza, if NZ were to become Islamic, the smarter far-lefties, the smarter rainbow coalition types, perhaps even the smarter Greens, would be queueing for migration to a capitalist country.

In the meantime, as a supporter of multiculturalism rather than assimilation, don’t forget to make an appointment for the dork snip, Yoza.

This has been going on at my local pool for some years already. Once a week it closes to the general public for a woman’s only session (1 1/2 hours). But as women work and pay rates one can hardly object if those women who want a time set aside have this option.

However what is more pervasive are the large amounts of time the pool is reserved for use by schools and for inter-school team sports. On top of this there are numerous times when the pool is set for use by teens, especially during school holidays.

This being because government has left schools too underfunded to afford maintenance or upgrade of their own pools.

I am sure their parents pay rates and all that but if others can object to times in pool, set aside for women, just because some are Moslem – then I am going to raise this much more relevant issue.

The cut back in education funding impacting on the ability of our children to swim. And the consequent provision of time in public pools.

This really reduces the time in the public pool for all.

Disdain for something if it is requested by Muslims, presumably because they dare to force women to cover themselves, followed by an insistence all women have to do, rather than accept this horrid Islamic oppression, is cover themselves.

My sympathy remains with women who may ask for some peace from others judgement.

No Fentex, not disdain for Muslims as such but if they come to a non-Muslim country and try and get special treatment because of their beliefs, then I’m totally against it. In their countries they wouldn’t change anything to accommodate us. I’ve had first hand experience in the UK where I lived for 7 years and saw how the very fabric of their society changed to accommodate Muslims. They have let millions in and as a country I really don’t know how they are going to get on because of it. It was an enormous mistake.

If Muslims can fit quietly into our society, fine, but if not then this is not the country for them and they should go to a Muslim country. Switzerland won’t even let them build Mosques and I say good on them.

I messed the quoting up above so my point was probably lost. I wasn’t reacting to the idea of disdain for Muslims but the way a person, in one comment, could both say…

If they don’t learn to swim because they can’t be seen by men, then that’s got nothing to do with me or this country.

…which was the disdain I mentioned, rejecting the idea that someone should use Islam as a justification for demanding different social mores be observed and…

However, as one person suggested above, they don’t need to wear skimpy swimsuits and can clothe themselves in more, yet still learn to swim.

…making the same demand of woman Muslims are often criticised for making – that women ought cover themselves up so as to escape unwanted discomforting attention of others.

My point being that religious and social conflicts that seem the point are beside the point, either way women get the short end of the stick and I think someone who cares about the people being discussed ought be more willing to care for the people being discussed.

While the idea that people shouldn’t demand everyone else change to suit their selfish demands seems sensible in another light this claim seems to be that everything is just fine and no one should ask for social change.

If you turn it on it’s head, that no one ought go to a country full of Muslims and tell them, for instance, to start respecting human rights of religious autonomy, woman’s equality, freedom of speech etc it becomes apparent to those who respect such ideas that it isn’t automatically wrong to ask for change.

It’s the nature of the change that is important, not the fact it is asked for. If a person from a place of better traditions than us came and asked we improved it would not be wrong in the way another person asking us to become worse would be.

Resisting someone asking others become intolerant or oppressive is wise, resisting someone’s suggestions because of reactionary feelings about them is foolish and childish.

The false assumption that Muslim women are “victims” of Islam would be considered insulting by many Muslim women, who are just as conservative and strict as the men. You are effectively calling into question their deeply held beliefs.

I am sure many do find Islam oppressive, but that sentiment is not confined to conservative Islam alone. Most of the major religions require modesty, portray sex as sin and chastity as virtue. If you really tried, I am sure you can think of some others.

KB is a very popular blog in NZ. I have never seen a Muslim on here demanding anything. Yet daily we see Christians demanding all manner of things be imposed on a largely secular society. This fact does not stop the stories of a Muslim invasion and even cries that we are heading towards Sharia law !

Is it because – some – conservative Muslims dress like Catholic Nuns ?

Already there are the beginnings of segregated schooling.

There is already a large proportion of the public schools system that has traditionally been segregated along gender lines and there are also gyms that cater specifically to women – neither exist as a consequence of Islamic sensibilities. Why shouldn’t women be allowed spaces where they are not subject to the scrutiny of men?

Re Kea’s 4.31 post asking what I think of Catholic girls’ schools. When I was young I thought they were okay. I wasn’t a Catholic, but the girls from there were generally pretty nice and mainstream kids. Since I have found those who were educated at them seemed to get quite a reasonable education.

I think mainstream private schools are okay. I don’t like Muslim madrassa type schools where they dress kids in Middle Eastern garb and inculcate separatism and multiculturalism.

Bit like if Masai migrated here and wanted to run round the country in barefoot bands spearing stray deer and goats.

It’s a stupid point. That women should be allowed public places for themselves because they find men threatening is perfectly acceptable. Japan has women only train carriages for exactly the same reason. Women only sessions at public pools have been around for ages, Wellington Aquatic Centre has been running one for years (Thursday 6pm-8pm).

I think it is a little ugly the way so many here would work to prevent women from recreating in a safe space for such a small amount of time.
