Rodney Hide asks: ‘who are Hone Harawira’s ‘people’?

John Hadfield’s people are overwhelmingly Maori, angry, and they are almost always on the fringes of society. They live in the Far North mostly but you can find supporters all round the country.

They are generally the losers in life, having made an absolute balls of it. Enabled by a media and education system that has, over the years, gently instilled the fake news that they got their land stolen off them.

At the other end of the spectrum, a friend of mine who is – I’ll say Asian – said it might be ‘his people’ who provide New Zealand with an interesting, well funded, new right wing party. They’d have the numbers soon. It’s being talked about.

He said right now they are content to keep a low profile and quietly make money while the ‘children’ as he calls us kiwis run around trying to rehabilitate criminals (yes this came up during a chat about Act’s new policy last night) and provide wrap-around services to John Hadfield’s people etc

The major concern amongst ‘his people’ is violent crime, tax money being wasted, education and interestingly immigration from places like Africa, the ME and the Pacific Islands. They see this as having no benefit whatsoever to a country they believe is full of opportunity (long term).

    No Chuck. Actually the whole concept of democracy is that everyone gets a voice, and political parties are simply groupings of people with common interests and concerns. When/if they get into power, that is the time that a political party should (morally) not act to exclude sections of society from representation, of course…. but it’s incorrect to assert that political parties are there ‘to represent everyone’.

      Dave, I agree with you about common interests. But I think it very sad some people think it necessary to have racially based parties like the Maori party and the Mana Party. I doubt if they will reach 5% if the Maori seats disappear as they should.
      
      People are free to form any political party. However, when people immigrate to a country I do not think they should start a party for new immigrants. They of course are legally entitled to.

        Chuck, you’ve got me on the Maori and Mana parties…. I couldn’t agree more. But I think while it’s sad that race based parties exist, they are still entitled to form (and their low levels of support reflect their lack of popular appeal).
        
        Likewise new immigrants. If there is a party formed by new immigrants SOLELY to push FOR new immigrants, then it would probably have the same low level of support. But if such a party were to espouse more of the ‘traditional kiwi’ values that immigrants originally saw as good in this country then that might be a totally different kettle of fish.

        Dave, one concern of mine would be that if Muslim immigration and breeding continues. Such a group could be a part of a new immigrant party. It looks like we are roughly in agreement.

        Chuck, sorry, I upticked you but I also accidentally reported your 9.27am comment above. I was trying to reply to say that yes we broadly agree and ESPECIALLY agree about Muslims if they were to firm a bloc in any party of new immigrants!

    One of the strengths of MMP is it gives like minded people a say in parliament.
    In the deplorable Muldoon years. Social credit and Values(Greens before they turned Marxist) had a lot of support. but no seats.
    Maori were taken for granted by Labour with it 4 default seats.
    It has all changed under MMP
    Maori now have a voice, Racist rednecks have NZF, Marxist have the Greens and nerds have Dun.
    You might not agree with their views point. They now have a voice get use to it.

      Liberty, please explain which Maori have a voice under MMP with the especially if Hone gets back in power. As Rodney pointed out Hone just speaks for a small minority of Maori – mainly losers.
      
      Winston and NZF is no more racist than Trump and the GOP. Any country should have the right to limit the number of people coming from a different culture. NZF is less racist than the current National government which supports race based seats.

Sorry David – but I think you are being a little over-optimistic in your predictions that the Mt Albert by-election is only between Jacinda Adern and Julie-Anne Genter, who are both already MPs, and that you have no doubt that Jacinda Adern will be elected?

Why?

Because I am getting traction and support from Labour and Green Party members / supporters, who agree with me that a vote for either of them is effectively a wasted vote, because they are already MPs.

    If you receive 5% or more of the votes cast for all candidates in the by-election you are entitled to a refund of the $300 deposit paid when you were nominated. A deposit cannot be refunded until you have filed your return of election expenses and donations.
    
    Penny received 1% of the votes cast for all candidates. She won’t get her $300 back.
    
    The same position applies with respect to a general election (see section 6.18).

        The Council will get the rates and cumulative penalties (which would cover the cost of otherwise borrowing the money) at some point eg when the property is sold (any outstanding rates effectively come out of the sale price). The galling feature is the Council has incurred significant legal costs which would only be partially recoverable. As someone pointed out a few days ago, she has probably realised it is now check-mate and has quietly paid up.

        I’ve just found the judgment on Auckland Council’s website of all places.
        
        Interesting points to note:
        
        – “No appearance for the Plaintiff [Ms Bright]” (cover page).
        
        – “The resumed hearing took place on 20 May 2016. As with the hearing on 5 November 2015, Ms Bright elected not to appear” (at [4]).
        
        – “In my view a reasonable juror would note first that Ms Bright was seriously in default in payment of her rates. The juror would also probably accept the proposition in the Press Release that Ms Bright’s refusal to pay her rates was, to some extent, an action taken at expense of those Auckland ratepayers who were paying their rates” (at [121]).
        
        – “I did not hear fully from the parties on the question of costs. If the parties are unable to agree, Mr Town may file a memorandum seeking costs within 15 working days of the date of this judgment. Ms Bright may file any reply memorandum within 15 working days of her receipt of Mr Town’s memorandum.” (at [133]).
        
        So Penny brought an unmeritorious case, she couldn’t be bothered turning up to court (twice), and she’s made Mr Town incur considerable legal costs. I’d say Penny will come to regret her decision to sue Mr Town for defamation.

        Besides court costs, would that include the more than $104,000 Auckland Council spent in engaging some top defamation lawyer?

    Seriously though, I just cannot believe the thinking of the Lab/Green Left (as seen on the likes of the Standard) … presumably they are Labour supporters/volunteers, they say they will campaign and give their electorate vote to their local Labour MP but give their Party vote to the Greens (to ensure their vote isn’t wasted because the Greens are unlikely to win the electorate vote). In the spirit of the MOU and kumbaya of course!
    
    Yet they cannot see the one, major flaw with this approach! Then one would assume that Andy (and Labour HQ) would “correct them”, but they don’t! Oh well maybe my opening remark wasn’t tongue and cheek after all and might come to pass!

Radio NZ ‘news’ is this morning reporting that Jacinda Ardern’s victory in Mt Albert is a step on the path to rebuilding the Labour Party vote in the lead-up to this year’s general election. Funnily enough, whilst extolling her tally of 77% of the votes cast RNZ fails to place any of this in the context of National not fielding a candidate! The result is no indicator of anything other than Ardern and Labour being more popular than the Greens and the Opportunities Party. Gosh, who’d have expected that!

I guess facts and context are not part of RNZ ‘news’ narrative.

  I’m guessing not many for one reason: National decided that it wasn’t worth fielding a candidate. If National thought that they could have taken the electorate from Labour then they would have thrown resources at it so they could use the win as evidence that Labour are sinking.

    Pretty convincing.

  I wouldn’t go so far as saying I *hate* Ardern. But she represents the mass-media/leftist force in NZ. She is given a complete free pass by the media, but if she was in power her policies would make this country poorer, unstable, unsafe and weak. Thankfully, post-Trump/Brexit these people are being exposed for the frauds they are…in the US and UK. But i’m not seeing signs of that in NZ and that worries me.

    It is good to note a swing to watching news on Sky channels which is giving them a better perspective than our lame channels and Trumpy has sure made a few people think a bit more.
    National continues to disappoint and maybe there are vast numbers out there looking for a guiding light.(It’s not Morgan)

Ok so enough is enough, in the past 12 months we’ve had a steady stream of tragic, shameful, depressing or sad news coming out of NZ rugby.

Something is not right! Something in fact is very, very wrong!

Yes the results on the field are impressive, but at what cost?

Why are young men dying in their prime? Why are superstars going off the rails at the end of their careers? Why is there a steady underflow of ‘hushed up’ drug incidents? Hushed up violence incidents. Hushed up drunken incidents,Hushed up violence towards women.

Either rugby is the unluckiest sport ever. Or something bad is going on. I have no idea what but today’s revelations about Ali Williams and cocaine are making it start to look like there is a pattern!

Yes – we can bury our head in the sand and say all these are just pure coincidence – but that’s nearly as frigging retarded as saying it’s just coincidence that all the major terrorist attacks involve Islam.

  It probably isn’t as sinister as you think. Look at the qualities needed to be a top rugby player. Strength, size, athletic ability & ball skills. Intelligence, character, self control, social skills & an ability to drink moderately are not very important.
  
  Chances are that, with the exception of ball skills, the same abilities will be present in every one of the no hopers polluting the footpath outside courtrooms every working day, throughout NZ.

      Lomu’s kidney problems came from untreated strep throat as a kid, as did Joeli Vidiri’s. Norm Berryman I think was also due to inadequate medical treatment as a child. It’s not an indictment on the sport but on parental neglect.

        Yes you are correct but they reneged on most of their fictitious debts to foreign bankers and have put massively higher reserve requirements on loans.
        
        Whilst not exactly a President Kennedy Executive Order 11110 in 1963 that would have stopped the International Bankers creating debt as money, it’s a small step in the write direction.

        PS: I’ve spent this morning reading the case of First National Bank of Montgomery vs. Jerome Daly whereby the Bank was moving to foreclose on his house, and Daly decided to fight the foreclosure in court, arguing that contract law requires two contracting parties to agree to swap two items of value, legally called the “consideration.”
        
        Daly argued that since the bank simply wrote a number in a ledger to create the loaned money out of think air, there was no real value and therefore no legally binding consideration. The lawyers for the bank admitted that this is how the bank works. They create money out of thin air as a ledger or computer entry, which you must repay with your labour. And there was no law in 1968 that specifically gave banks the legal right to do that. Daly argued that because there was no equal consideration, the mortgage was null and void and the attempt to foreclose invalid and the jury and Judges agreed, who resisted MSM and the Bankers demands to over-rule the jury in favour of the bank, and wrote a simple straightforward decision that stated that there was no question that the mortgage contract was void because the claim that the bank simply made up the money out of thin air was not disputed by the bank itself.
        
        The Judge – Martin Mahoney, was murdered with poison less than six months later, and the lawyer representing Daly was debarred. The decision in favour of Daly was then nullified on procedural grounds and the entire matter shoved straight down the memory hole!

Has anyone been following what appears to be a political assassination of Kim Jong Nam?

One interpretation of this incident is that the North Korea leadership has been emboldened by the response to their nuclear tests. Lots of UN Security Council meetings. Lots of words. No action. How else can you explain their willingness to travel to another country and murder someone in a busy public place like an airport?

Well are Stuff Journalist going all out to try and inflict some damage on the Government by pushing stories that most people would say these both cases have been lost in high court and it is time to move on. One of these cases is Dot Com and the journalists calls the USA bullys and tells the public that this case should be left to NZ Courts and if he can’t be charged under this system he should be set free. The second case is from a Pike River Mines victims mother telling the reason they want to enter the mine and whilst I do feel sorry for her Peter Whittle won in the high court that’s where the blame game should stop because to risk other people lives to try and find evidence when you can’t guarantee there is any is foolish.

As an amateur psephologist I look at election statistics and try to make some sense of them.
I note that Penny Bright exceeded 3.13% in two places; Prisons and Rest Homes; as well as the Selwyn Retirement Village.
Ardern won every polling booth. Genter did best in Newton Central, followed by Kowhai Intermediate and Westmere. By best I mean that in Newton, Jacinda’s vote was only 3.12 times higher than Genter’s.
I have not checked it in detail, but I recall some of those Mount Albert booths polled highly for the Greens in 2014.
Conclusion; This bye election may have been a decent kick in the guts for the Greens.

Apparently it is gay pride week in Auckland and they celebrated with a parade last night. One News made a big deal out of how it was being sponsored by ‘big business’, although the only one mentioned was Fletcher Building whose spokeswoman appeared giddy with virtue signaling (“I have goosebumps just thinking about it”). So they are raffling off a garden shed painted with rainbow colors (I am not kidding), and have Fletcher builders in the parade dressed like rainbow hammers and some with pink hardhats (again, not kidding).

At least 1 News was honest when they said that approximately 100,000 New Zealanders identify as gay or lesbian, with 40,000 of those being in Auckland (no surprise there). By my calculation that works out to be about 2.1% of the population, which is in keeping with the numbers in America and Britain.

Why all this palaver over such a small percentage of people living here? I, for one, will not be celebrating.

I presume they are asking for full indemnity costs (lawyers’ fees and court costs) as is customary in defamation cases. If they are not, what is your view on the corruptness of their position? After all, the ratepayers have had to pay the lawyers and the court costs, so I’m sure you will agree that it is only fair that the ratepayers should be repaid in full.

    A properly set up pick up point in Doubtful Sound, from the Manapouri tail race for fresh water has always been an interesting thought for me.
    
    After all any tankers/shipping would have a vested interest in keeping the area pristine.
    
    As all experts say, “the marketing should be to the high end market” so they should invest their money not only to get a return, but also to be sure the ‘company’ is doing things right.

National list MP Paul Foster-Bell will not contest the selection for Wellington Central and will stand down from Parliament at the 2017 general election.

Looking more at the Roy Morgan poll, at the same stage in 2008, the Nats were polling about the same as they are now and Labour + Green were about the same (although more for Labour and less for the Greens).

The big difference is confidence in the Govt. It’s way higher now than it was in Feb 2008.

It looks like National only have to avoid doing anything stupid, and they’ll be back in. And the way it has been going, it’s Labour (or, rather, Little) doing the stupid stuff.
