Monday Motivator – Lower Mclean Falls

Monday Motivator 28
Lower McLean Falls, Catlins Forest, New Zealand

I love The Catlins and have visited many times. On this occasion I found Lower McLean Falls in full winter flow and the low light conditions allowed me to capture the image with a long exposure showing the flow of the water nicely.

Seeing this now makes me want to get back down to explore more of The Catlins very soon.

Monday Motivator – Westhaven Splendour

July 7th, 2014 at 1:31 pm by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 27

Westhaven Splendour, Auckland, New Zealand

This one is obviously for the Aucklanders amongst us – a classic view of Westhaven Marina and the harbour bridge.

Rising super early one morning I drove into the city in time for an incredible display of pre dawn light. This has always been a popular image with tourists and has literally sold to all corners of the world.

Monday Motivator – Murawai Dream

June 16th, 2014 at 11:29 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 25
Murawai Dream, Murawai Beach, New Zealand

Heading out to Murawai I had quite a different idea in my mind for the type of photograph I was going to take. However after shooting a few options which were a little average I started to notice the amazing cloud formations and the amazing light the setting sun was having on them.

I quickly relocated to a vantage point high on the cliffs and  set to work capturing this image which I love.

Monday Motivator – Waves In motion

Monday Motivator 23
Wave In Motion, Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Driving towards Bland Bay in the Bay of Islands I came across this delightful little beach just upon dusk. The fairly even and consistent waves allowed me to set up a long exposure capturing the movement and creating a dramatic composition.

I have always loved the surrealness of this photograph.

Monday Motivator – Guardian Of The Coast

April 28th, 2014 at 12:21 pm by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 19

Guardian Of The Coast, Nugget Point, New Zealand

I love photographing lighthouses and this one found on the Catlins coast at Nugget Point is one of my favourites.

I will always remember climbing out to this vantage point in the hours before dawn and watching the stunning light show play out in front of me. A long exposure allowed me to capture the endless movement of the waves as they swirl around the rocky outcrop.

Monday Motivator – Hooker Valley

March 24th, 2014 at 11:15 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 15

Hooker Valley, Mt Cook/Aoraki National Park, New Zealand

The Hooker Valley track provides relatively simple access to some great views of Mt Cook/Aoraki via a couple of swing bridges suspended across the river. There is stunning scenery pretty much all along the way and multiple opportunities to take great photography

I captured this image late in the afternoon just as the emerging shadows were beginning to add some welcome contrast to the scene.

Monday Motivator – Wild Mahia Dusk

March 17th, 2014 at 10:42 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 14

Wild Mahia Dusk, Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand

The long expanse of black sand coastline set up an inviting scene to catch some of the magic of the Mahia Peninsula. Just as the sun was setting I stepped into the tide and started shooting frames with the waves riding up the beach in the foreground.

I have always loved the sense of drama encapsulated in this photograph.

Monday Motivator – Standing Guard

January 20th, 2014 at 10:01 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 10

Standing Guard, Bethells Beach (Te Henga)

I love heading out to the mighty west coast beaches (from Auckland) and am always amazed by the ruggedness and beauty of this coastline just within a stones throw of the city.

The possibilities are endless but on this occasion I decided to compose the photograph with the surf-club watch tower in a dominant front-and-centre position. The small figures on either side of the tower are people in the distance enjoying what was a magical sunset.

Monday Motivator – Avalanche Falls

Monday Motivator 7

Avalanche Creek Falls, Arthurs Pass National Park, New Zealand

I love shooting waterfalls and while some are more challenging than others this particular one was quite simple. If you are travelling through Arthurs Pass village through the break you can easily find it a short distance from the information centre.

Monday Motivator – Sacred Waters

November 25th, 2013 at 10:05 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 4

Legendary French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson coined a phrase – Le moment decisif / The decisive moment – which I loved from  the moment I heard it. I have carried it with me in all my photographic travels as it encapsulates all the elements that come together in the moment when you press the shutter to capture a photograph. This was particularly the case with Cartier-Bresson’s amazing people photography.

For me all the elements of the decisive moment came together in the extraordinary ancient Indian city of Varanasi where I captured this photograph ‘Sacred Waters’. It was an experience I will never forget as I sat by the River Ganges at sun rise and watched as these incredibly devoted worshippers made their way to the Ghats and into the sacred waters of the river. As an outsider it was an incredible scene to witness and I felt extra privileged to be able to capture a little of the essence of this timeless ritual on film.

This photograph was captured in a single frame with a half second exposure on Fuji Velvia 50 ASA film at f32.

Monday Motivator – Te Whaiti-Nui-a-Toi Canyon

November 18th, 2013 at 10:00 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 3

This week we venture into the North Islands Whirinaki Forest to a wee gem of a location. I love being out in nature and discovering amazing places such as this. I’ll never forget arriving at this canyon which is located beneath a large canopy of trees and just feeling the awe and spirit of the scene. It was simply beautiful and I was determined to capture a photograph that resonated some of the mood and feeling of this ageless canyon.

I loved this perspective as soon as I found it – the steep heavily mossed canyon walls just seemed to drop away beneath me and the rushing water at the bottom sparkled like a jewel. This photograph was captured in a single frame with an exposure over a minute – this is how I was able to capture the beautiful surreal-like water which makes this such an enduring photograph.

Monday Motivator – Rangitoto

November 11th, 2013 at 10:00 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 2

For this weeks Monday Motivator I decided to bring you a photograph which works on a couple of levels for me. In amongst our busy lives I love the absolute calm and simplicity of this image. A classic case of  where ‘less is more‘ – relying on the simple composition and strong colours to create something stirring.

I often find myself making multiple visits to locations before I ‘get the shot’ – and in this case I visited this location over a dozen times in the very early morning before finally getting what I was looking for. I had taken some very nice images on those earlier trips but for Rangitoto I wanted something special. It all came together beautifully on this particular morning when the harbour was still and I was treated to an absolutely stunning pre-dawn light show.

This photograph was captured with a six second exposure taken at f45 on Fuji Velvia 50 asa film.

Monday Motivator – Blue Hut On SH8

November 4th, 2013 at 10:00 am by Richard Hume

Monday Motivator 1

Welcome to this new spot on Kiwiblog – your Monday Motivator – a landscape photograph usually in the panoramic format from New Zealand or overseas designed to bring you a little inspiration for the week ahead.

I thought I would start with a classic New Zealand scene taken on the road between Twizel and Lake Tekapo which has a certain element of ‘kiwiana’ about it. Very rarely does it occur that you happen to be driving by when all the elements (especially the light) for a photograph are present at that very moment. But that was the case with this image and after a quick u-turn and setting up the tripod in the middle of the highway I set about capturing what has become a very special photograph.

Enjoy Free Wallpaper – Desktop or ipad

I hope you enjoy – you can download this photograph as a free Desktop Wallpaper HERE and please share with your friends.

Many thanks to David for adding me amongst the fine photographers on Kiwiblog.

Wednesday Wallpaper | Doubtful Sound Reflections

October 3rd, 2012 at 9:53 am by Todd Sisson
Doubtful Sound dramatic Reflections, Fiordland NZ

Doubtful Sound Reflections. Landscape Photography By Todd Sisson

This week’s Wednesday Wallpaper is one of the images I made while away in Fiordland last week.  This capture was made from Real Journeys’ Patea Explorer while heading out of Doubtful Sound.  I am particularly pleased with this image, as it is the first time I have managed to make a photo that captures Doubtful Sound’s beauty on an inclement day.  My last 5 day trip resulted in exactly zero usable images, due to the abysmal weather conditions…..

You may download the large version from this link:  [free iPad wallpaper] Password = freewallpaper

Also available on our website as a canvas print.

See you next week!

Cheers – Todd
