Pork Barrel Politics

Many right wing bloggers in the US have been pressuring Congress to fund the $200b cost of Hurricane Katrina reconstruction by cutting pork.

However it seems that the US Senate has an unwritten rule that one senator does not attack the projects sought by another.

Despite that tradition, a Senator tried to get $220 million cut off for a bridge in Alaska. This was deemed so outrageous the senior Alaskan Senator said he would resign if they removed the funding – so it was defeated 15-82.

The $220 million bridge, by the way, will service around 50 people!
