Stasiland is brilliant – scary, but brilliant. A very vivid picture of East Germany, and in fact how life has been even after reunification.

I’d have to second that. Apart from being a little too liberal with the first person, it’s got too many anecdotes of Orwellian insanity to put down.

Love the Klaus Renft Combo. Gives a new meaning to rockers packing their trousers.

The Once & Future King is pretty good. Read it years ago – you got the whole set? I think it came to 4 books in all.

One of them (can’t remember which & can’t be arsed checking) was actually quite faithfully made into the Disney animated movie, the Sword in the Stone.

You would get on well with my daughter – 16 books in one store then she phoned me to help her carry them home.

I use this thing called a library to help me get books – have you heard of them??

Two titles took my fancy so I’ve just had a quick squizz at the Wellington Library website, and I’m off to interloan God’s Callgirl from Kilbirnie, and borrow Stasiland from Central.

Central is open til 8.30 pm – wonderful service don’t you think?

I’m too poor to buy as many books as I want. Thankfully, there’s a few books worth re-reading in my 5000+ collection. With all these bibliophiles around the blogosphere, perhaps we should start a bookswap arrangement. Or is that too socialist?

Once and Future King is great – one of my favourites.

David, you’re always welcome at Book Haven, our small shop in Newtown – and of course we’re online!

I too am an addict – we’ve around 10,000 books upstairs – fortunately the children are moving out – and their old bedrooms becoming stroage!

I’m currently finishing Krakatoa by Simon Winchester, who also wrote the Professor and the Madman, Moby Dick, The Biography of the Pound, the Da Vinci Code, plus this week’s New Yorker.

‘The Once and Future King’ is made up of four novels (The Sword in the Stone, The Queen of Air and Darkness [aka The Witch in the Wood], The Ill-Made Knight & The Candle in the Wind), which were substantially revised for the omnibus publication. Editions available today also invlude ‘The Book of Merlin’, which was discovered in White’s papers and first published in 1977.

Oddly enough, I don’t know many people who get far past ‘The Sword in the Stone’ because, much as I love the book, I think it’s fair comment to say that T.H. White was profoundly misanthropic and the sequences become blacker and bleaker.

Cheers craig – I read a very old copy of the Sword in the STone when I was a kid, & then when slightly less of a kid I realise (after reading your post) that I bought the revised omnibus which included the book of Merlin.

And Ben, heh, yes that went through my mind too 🙂

In a radio interview this morning Michael Cunningham, author of,”The Hours”, put forward a theory that books you read when young can influence you personality for life or change your DNA as he put it. Thinking back I remember reading,”Call of the Wild”, Nad ,”White Fang” when I was 9 and thought maybe he has a point. Anyone think so.
