Gay scarf offended

Slow news day. A man is offended because a police officer called his *scarf* “a bit too gay”.

The scarf is receiving counselling.

This was a recruitment officer at a careers expo.

Where does he get off?

I can tell you that if somebody in my organisation made that type of remark when talking to potential new staff, they would be out of a job.

This is completely inappropriate from this person in the context of where these comments were made.

It does nothing to improve the Police’s appalling reputation in the community it is there to support, and even the apology (which implies that the person who was wearing the scarf should not have ‘taken it personally’) was lack lustre and ill-informed.

Its not funny.

Its sick.

NO NO NO.

I refuse to sit here and let the Police be exempt from the same standards that apply to other employees for basic standards of professional conduct.

As I say, if this happened somewhere other than the Police, the person would potentially be out of a job for breaching basic standards of conduct.

Yeah, perhaps its banter. Perhaps its a bit fun.

BUT, and this cannot be overemphasised, this is a person who is responsible for recruiting new staff in an area where turnover is unacceptably high.

This is a person who is charged with bringing new talent into an organisation well known for employing bumbling idiots and thickos, and trying to change its public perception.

He appears to have no idea of the impact of his actions, let alone the broader responsibility he holds as a public servant to avoid creating the perception the Police is any different to other employers in the sector.

I’m highly offended at (1) the comments, which were stupid and ill-advised, and (2) the fact that taxpayer money is being used to employ a person who clearly doesnt understand what he is employed to do.

Seriously, I agree with you that the comment was utterly inappropriate and the chaps concerned should be ripped new arseholes at the first opportunity by their superiors. I certainly won’t be mincing down the nearest cop shop when I want my couture critiqued.

But, FFS, who does the stagey over-sensitivity really serve? Is it going to make policing a more attractive career for people who happen to he homosexual, or have gay and lesbian officers lunging for the PERF application forms? Is it going to make gay and lesbian tax-payers feel any more secure in theit homes, or on the street?

I have my doubts; but I am sure that the Police have much better things to expend time and resources on than ‘sensitivity training’ that will have as much effective as a good bitch-slapping and a written warning from a commanding officer.

Lighten up Scott. Don’t attribute to malice what could be easily attributed to stupidity. It’s not hard to consider how those sorts of comments could be spun. The reality is probably something far different – simply one officer making an off-hand comment that he would probably never say if the situation was formal or if he considered how those comments could be interpreted.

Perhaps you could shed some light on just what the ‘impact of his actions’ is? I’ve heard comments that I considered much more offensive being used as jokes by gay people. Is this one of those exclusive things where you can’t poke fun if you don’t know the secret handshake?

The officer used the correct terminology, when referring to item of clothing. The scarf was the item that should take offence not the individual wearing it. The officer didn’t call the student “a bit gay”.

This is excellent we are witnessing the end of “PC CRAP”

Some of us do remember when the word gay had an entirely different meaning before being hijacked to sanitize homosexuality. As far as I’m aware that meaning hasn’t been revoked yet.

Nobody is suggesting its malice. Its just stupidity.

From your average Plod, I would expect this sort of attitude and remark and put it down to flippancy and bad PR skills generally.

BUT THIS PERSON IS THE DISTRICT RECRUITING OFFICER.

I expect more from a person with these responsibilities, and so do the public.

I agree with Simon Power, who has said its basically just confirmed the view that the Police is not an employer of diversity and that they pretty much actively discourage recruitment from people outside the ‘norm’.

I find it interesting that on the “new cops” recruitment site they list having an Asian/Pacific Islander/Iwi liaision officer for each district.

So, recruitment is “inclusive” as long as you are from a particular ethnicity but not if you are gay.

It smacks of a double standard and a culture that is about 15 years behind the rest of NZ and most other major employers.

Maybe Scott is on to something. The police should represent society as a whole. Perhaps we should go and survey the entire police force on their sexual preferences and find out if they have enough people to fit each quota. We can post the results on each stations notice board so they local commander can make sure he has enough gay/straight officers on duty at one time.

As a flaming homosexual myself, I am always opposed to homophobia. But given the way “gay” has morphed in meaning now for many younger people to something equivalent to “naff” (itself a word coming from London gay slang known as ‘polari’)I wonder if the officer was just trying to show he was down with the lingo the kids are using these days.

But, if he wasn’t, it is inappropriate, but not a hanging offence.

I have a family friend who’s a lesbian (not a radical feminist) who from first hand experience in a number of areas has found that there is quite a lot of homophobia within the police.

The police officer probably did mean gay as in poofter/fag/homosexual considering men wearing scarves are associated with homosexuality.

The NZ Police uniform is rather gay in contrast to some of our international peers, now the subject comes up…

But I’m very happy to line up with those thinking it’s absolutely fuckwitted of the Police to have somebody who makes these kind of comments staffing a desk at a recruitment expo. Would they hire somebody who told the recruiting officer his hat was a bit gay? Space at these events isn’t free, so I have to wonder why they would be wasting public money on such idiocies given their seemingly obvious inability to actually make themselves appear professional and appealing as an employer.

It certainly costs more public money than a fucking $70 horoscope in an internal publication. Where’s Rodney when you need him? Oh, that’s right. Prancing around like a twat…

So, we have the Safety in Schools For Queers (SS4Q) report out, saying how schools can combat negative usage of the word “gay,” because it easily offends. Now we have police using the word, because it is “cool?”

Yes, “gay” at one point did mean happy. However, its usage has dramatically changed of late, that even kids who know what the original meaning of “gay” was they’d still snigger at the “We’ll have a gay ol’ time” in the Flinstones theme song.

In reality the word “gay,” as in “That xxx is gay,” can offend many people, people as I read it, they are meaning that the scarf is bad, and therefore saying that gays are bad. That is how it is used by people these days.

I can only take that the police officer meant for it to have a negative connotation, as I would anyone I didn’t know and uses that word.

It was inappropriate through-and-through, especially since we have the police trying to pull off a “We aren’t homophobic” image with the inactment of GLBT-friendly police offers.

I think the real question is whether the scarf actually *was* a bit too gay. An unhappy, angry scarf might actually make a better cop scarf. A balding, wrinkled old one, not the young, fluffy fresh faced one depicted. What criminal would take such a scarf seriously?

I imagine that cops aren’t allowed scarfs at all on the beat, especially not tied in a slipknot for ease of strangling.

And am I the only person wondering why (presumably hetero) Mike Steer felt it was relevant to point out that Mr. Calcinai was at this expo with his girlfriend – yes, we get it: Not queer at all, not even a little bit bi-, strrrraight!!!

Now, personally, I really find it more offensive when straight boys (and the MSM that love them) have to affirm their hetero bona fides at the merest suggestion they may partake of the love that won’t bloody shut up. Guys, get over yourselves – I’ve nothing against heterosexuals, some of my best friends are straight, but why do you people have to constantly ram your lifestyle down everybody else’s throat? Fortunately he has lost interest in joining the Police. I would reject him on the basis of his re-action to this harmless banter.He would need a much thicker skin to withstand the common banality between members of any Police Section, let alone the invective received from gangsters and young hoods. To hang the Senior Constable out to dry over it increases my contempt for modern Police Administration.

This guy certainly needs to toughen up and get a sense of humour. Although I know a few police officers that have been called to task over minor issues and been equally overly sensitive and emotive.

Joe Cop makes a silly comment, most likely reported out of context of the overall conversation, and this guy wants some milage out of it.

I would blame Police loosing their jobs for driving the PM before I blame this little side show RE: issues with Police recruitement.

What was the relevance of the scarf to the initial enquiry. How serious is this recruitment officer about recruiting – just days ago we heard about a huge increase in numbers that will be required soon and the expectation that recruits will be hard to find! I think that this recruiter made a remark that went well beyond the call of duty. The lack of professionalism has been acknowledged by the police as I understand it. There is a similarity with the Ryan/Telecom case – individuals not understanding their roles.

2) wanted to borrow the policemans hat to try it on for looks – yup clearly someone for whom he sartorial side of the job matters more than the reality.

3) being called on wearing a gay scarf is probably the least insulting thing most cops would hear on a friday night in any town in the country

we should rejoice that a cop has watched southpark and is able to call a gay scarf a gay scarf

and on the upside, thats one sargeant who will never get forced to man (sic!) the recruiting booth again when he could be out doing something more interesting than having to pretend to be nice to spotty little oiks whose mummies still dress them.

I know many people who, when criticising something, say “that’s gay”. That doesn’t necessarily mean they dont like gay people, it’s they dont agree with the subject at hand.

My problem is that he recommended he took it off – which implied that it would improve his chances of being recruited if he did. That is the real bias here – looking gay meant you couldn’t join the police force.

Now, thats just saying it was a 8-10 on the gay scale. If it was a tasteful number, which didn’t clash with the winter blue hue which the NZ constabulary wear, then he might have said “that scarf is just plain old gay” (being a 4-6 on the gay scale).

Would there have been the same reaction if he had said “that scarfs a bit too straight” though?

Perhaps the veteran recruiter knew that a wussy looking sissy like the guy appeared to be (whether he was or not) would not survive the rigours of a police career and was trying to let him down gently. He may have been doing the guy a favour. Also, do you really think that Mr Scarf looked like he was truly going to cut his locks off just to be abused by drunks on a Saturday night?

Policemen don’t tread, they plod.

I always thought regular sworn policemen wore uniforms when on duty! Even a candidate reporting naked to the recruitment office could be attired on duty to look just like any policeman.
