Well, if its a matter of trust, you can usually expect a debt collector to keep their word. They will come back and strip you of your assets…..

I wasn’t suggesting that everything had to be classroom perfect but I am assuming English is Phil’s first language. So, it shouldn’t be hard to complete a comprehensible sentence or even a paragraph. (Para- what, huh, Whoooaar!) Additionally, your punctuation is appalling.

LOL, parliament is sovereign in this country, so it would be a pretty interesting constitutional crisis if the courts came after them. I think parliament would win because they still have the army, a fact Lincoln reputedly consoled himself with. But those were pretty crap times, wouldn’t want it here.

Then again…it is about time we had a republic…I vote for a system based on referenda, with no parties or representatives at all. Just issues. Yeah, right, like any major political party will go for that.

I’m flipping through a copy of my oath and there’s a couple of people at the top of the list that are not the Labour party.

Helen Clark is NOT CIC or the NZ Armed Forces. She is not even in the chain of command.

So pesky those fact things aren’t they. Quick make up some good sounding regulation to support your inacurate claims!

You can cluck republic till the cows come home but there’s still a crown at the top of every badge of the armed forces and they don’t work for Helen.

Murray, you’re kidding right? You really don’t think the Prime Minister is in control of the army? Who is then? Who do you think ‘The Crown’ is?

As for oaths, I never swore one to follow the laws of NZ, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be made to anyway. If you’re in the army, you’re doing what Clark wants, right now. Which has always been one of my main reasons for never signing up myself – that one day someone I didn’t agree with could be telling me to kill someone. Or in your case you’re being told you’re not allowed to kill someone when you really, really want to.

Unless you join a rebellion, of course. Good luck.

I’m not clucking republic, but I’m not clucking constitutional crisis either. I’m too pragmatic to want either one.

The Military is responsible to the Minister of Defense (Goff) who is bound by the Collective Cabinet responsibilty and answers to the leader of his party (the Prime Minister).

Helen Clark as PM of New Zealand HAS NO DIRECT COMMAND OF THE ARMED FORCES. From Gen Mataprae to a private TF soldier she is not able to tell them to do so much and do up a boot lace.

The Minister of Defence does. However that minister is also not the CIC.

No revolution is required. Who do you think makes sure that when the GG sacks a government they go?

You can be asured that in the past – and if needed in the future – PM’s have issued what they lovingly asumed to be orders to the military only to be told no.

Saint David Lange wet himself repeatedly on national television because Gen Mace pretty much told him to cram it when Dave wanted to commit New Zealand to unilateral, non-UN approved military action in another nation.

The very thought of people who are willing to join an organisation that holds to concepts like duty and honor just plain scares the crap out of you doesn’t it.

If you can’t be bothered to find out what you’re talking about don’t make the wild claims based on your own willful asumptions.

You want an elected political to have control of the military then move to a republic. You can be a Bush fan, wont that be fun.

First person you swear loyalty to is HMTQ. Deal with it.

Murray, what makes you think you are in a better position to know what making an oath means? Are your oaths somehow more important than mine?

The Minister of Defence is appointed by Clark. They can be reappointed. The Minister can get rid of the General. They could disband the army completely, if they wanted. You could be sacked, by Clark, at any time, following this chain of power. Get it?

Naturally this power doesn’t need to be exercised. But it could be. Lange chose not to exercise it, but he could have simply got rid of Mace, if he had any kind of authoritarian bent, or if the need was great enough. You are a fool if you think the PM doesn’t have that kind of power.

As for your duty and honour, you are full of crap, mate. You will do what your CO tells you, or be court-martialled and kicked out of the army. You have abdicated all right to even think about the incredibly moral issue of taking other people’s lives.

My own sense of honour involves personally standing up for what I think is right, not getting a gun, lining up with a bunch of fellow rule-followers, and shooting whoever the man says. You may think that’s full of duty and honour, but only you are fooled.

The only way that what you do could ever be considered to have a moral basis was if the chain of command itself ultimately was in the people’s custody. In NZ that means via elected representatives.

I can appreciate that considerable personal bravery is often required in the army, and that many, even a majority, of recruits have noble intentions. I’m not saying the army are all bastards. I’m just saying they have no special claim to a moral high ground just because they’re full of noble intentions, carrying a gun and addicted to adrenaline.

Oaths to the Queen are as much of a joke in NZ as they are in the UK. When was the last time the Queen had anything at all to say about where NZ troops are deployed? Or even British troops? I’m guessing the last queen who had that kind of power was QE1. If you took them seriously it is because you have an overly-literal frame of mind.
