Culture & Identity Stats

Another bunch of stats out today from the census. Ones I found interesting:

* Since 2001, Maori population up 30%, Pacific up 59%, Asian 255%, and total population up 19%.
* Also since 2001 those identifying as English has dropped 17%, but British is up 63%, Tongans 117%, Fijians 93%, Chinese 216%, Indian 226%, Korean 3,211%, Afghani 2,069%,
* 73.5% of residents were born in NZ, 1.6% Australia, 3.4% in the Pacific, 6.2% in UK/Ireland, 0.7% North America, 6.2% Asia,
* 6,034 NZers were born in Iraq, 2,793 in Iran and 2,145 in Afghanistan
* Of the 879,543 NZers born overseas 6.7% have been here less than year, 24.2% 1 – 4 years, 16.2% 5 – 9 years, 17.05 10 – 10 years and 31.5% over 20 years
* In terms of language 95.9% speak a Germanic language, 2.1% a romantic language, 0.5% a Balto-Slavic language, 2.8% a Sino-Tibeto-Burman language, and 7.5% a Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian language
* 213 NZers born in Asia speak Maori, 459 NZers born in Australia speak Samoan
* 6,531 NZers can speak five or more languages, including two kids aged under five!
* Since 1996, Anglicans are down 12.1%, Catholics up 7.4%, Mormons up 5.7%, Brethren down 10%, Evangelicals up 773%, Sallies down 21.4%,
* In other religions, Muslims up 166%, Jews up 43%, Ratana up 39%, And Satanists up 28% (to 1,167). We also have 357 Scientologists
