This may surprise you Tina, but most Iraqis didn’t like Saddam and were happy to see him go, and; there was no El Quada in Iraq when the war ended.
Bush and Co had a huge opportunity at the end of the war that they pissed away trying to milk every advantage they could for themselves and America rather than pushing ahead with what was best for Iraq. You can argue that since America paid for Saddams downfall they were entitled to first dibs on the oil if you want, but otherwise stop talking BS, it’s boring.

George Bush said that he was sure that Iraq/Saddam possessed WMDs beyond any reasonable doubt. He was wrong, therefore someone along the line was lying about the certainty of the evidence. Whether or not Bush lied is difficult to prove, though in any case the invasion was predicated upon a lies.

In financial terms the invasion and subsequent occupation will end up costing the US about $1 trillion, and 5,000 dead soldiers (and that’s not all the armed “security” personel that have been acting as defacto soldiers).

The cost for the Iraqi economy runs into the hundreds of billions, and at the very least 150,000 dead civilians. And all to “get rid of saddam” (which in itself really means nothing if you don’t improve the condition of the country – which hasn’t happened). And now there’s been a little “apparent progress” so now it’s suddenly all worth it? Not even close.

It is clear that a lot of the people who have commented on this post are opposed to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I cannot read minds but it seems that the reason for their opposition is largely due to the unnecessary deaths that have occured in that country, both from the invasion itself and the sectarian violence that broke out post-invasion.

Then I read comments from Redbaiter, which beside from being quite angry and also incoherent, are filled with rantings about the evils of the mainstream media, and how every organisation that is not borne out of the Bush Whitehouse is incorrect, a communist, or just plain stupid.

It would be great, Redbaiter, if you could tell us a) why you supported, and continue to support, the invasion of Iraq; and b) how you defend the obviously terrible job that the people who engineered this war did.

It is clear, and has been for some time, that not enough troops were sent in, that they should have stopped the looting immediately, that they ignored screeds of professional advice, and that the whole operation was something of a carnival of the absurd.

When people post legitimate criticism about the invasion itself, or how it was carried out, it would benefit people like Redbaiter to calmly tell us how we are all wrong, without resorting to paranoid rantings that make him appear uninged and divorced from reality.

I’ve written on this previously on kiwiblog DPF – unfortunately I can’t find the quote.

I will say however that the Iraq war was probably at least in part motivated by the US’s worries about the global energy situation in the coming 20 years or so. The international energy agency is predicting a flattening off of non-opec oil production post 2010 – so any increases in production that happen after that date will have to come to dictators, which puts them in an extremely powerful position.

These dictators want to ramp the price of oil up so they’re getting the most from their resource base that they can. This means restricting supply. The US of course doesn’t want this, so Iraq can be seen as “example” to the rest of them. If they don’t keep the spigot open they can expect the same. There’s also the fact that Iraq has the second largest undeveloped conventional oil reserves in the world, so are integral to any increase in global production going into the future. Essentially the US wants to avoid a repeat of the 1970s and 1980s oil shocks – (OPEC was in a similarly powerful position, as non-OPEC oil resources were under developed and not capable of immediate increases in output, and they exploited this situation through restricting supply). A repeat of the global recession that resulted from the last round of oil shocks would be of far greater cost than $1 trillion, the war could still turn out to be economically rational for the US economy as a whole (let alone for the oil giants that are so closely associated to the Bush administration).

So while I’m not say that this is “the” reason for the Iraq war, it seems likely that it figured in the Bush administration’s considerations going into the war. Particularly given that Cheney’s think tank, “a project for a new American century” published a report between 1999 and 2001 which made security of oil supply a top concern for US foreign policy going into the 21st century.

It is an interesting question Baiter. What’s worse, the invasion and subsequent occupation in Iraq, or the prospect of the OPEC dictators using their monopoly over large, un-tapped oil reserves to screw with the global economy?

Now that’s a debate that I think is worth having. It certainly beats a debate about whether it was worth it because it may have facilitated Iraq becoming a viable independent democracy in the future. Either a fundamentalist Islamic state will be voted in after the US leave, or their will be a dictatorship that the US likes (i.e. Musharaff in Pakastan).

You seem to be avoiding the questions, Redbaiter, and I am assuming it is because you are more comfortable engaging in false bravado that actual debate. That is what I assumed would be the case.

To answer your pedantic question, by “us” I was referring to the people who have commented on this thread who are opposed to the war in Iraq. I don’t believe I speak for everyone who holds that position, but this is a blog, not a university essay. I hope you will forgive me.

Now that I have answered that for you I expect an answer to my questions, but based on your past immature performances I shan’t be holding my breath.

This argument about “leaving Saddam in power to avoid 100,000 deaths”, (or 200,000 deaths, or whatever) is deeply flawed. What we simply are not entitled to assume, is how many people would have continued to die under Saddam’s rule had he BEEN left in power, and for HOW LONG, and whether he would have done another invasion of Iran or Kuwait or wherever.

Anyone that argues that Saddam should have been left in power is warped in the head.

Any other examples you can offer to compare with a Dictator who has Oil wealth, who has invaded two neighbouring countries, killing more than a million people, and who routinely kills thousands of his own people annually and six figures on special occasions, used chemical weapons on his own people, and spent more than ten years playing “chicken” with UN weapons inspectors? Sorry, Mugabe doesn’t quite measure up.

The fairer comparison for Saddam, is Adolf Hitler, in terms of likely deaths were he left in power vs. deaths resulting from a war confronting him. So we should have left Hitler alone, woger nono, because war is awful and people ger killed?

Make any assumption you want, but if you honestly believe that those two questions you asked are hard to answer, its a pointer to why you think the way you do. You have just never taken the time or effort to study any possible alternative views to the one you prefer. Rather than approach the Iraqi war from an objective and rational viewpoint, you’ve come from the partisan leftist angle and have obviously never spent one nanosecond studying the alternative.

Its why you think the way you do and its also why you speak of yourself in the plural. You are completley devoid of the ability to think and act act independent of the crowd.

Leftists always only know one side of the argument. Rightists know both sides and have taken an objective decison as to what is right or wrong. This is one of the essential differences between the mindsets of left and right, and it is put on display time and time again on this blog by leftists who write here and persistently show their complete ignorance of the other side of any argument.
