The Police need to be commended on the one hand for the apprehension of those cold blooded murdering criminals who shot to death the Sikh shopkeeper. On the other hand, there are connatations that could be used by the Accused’s Defence Lawyers

Consider also the scenario. The shopkeeper shot the robber and reported the matter to the police. The police are there in 5 minutes?

Reality of the situation. Police reaction time 45 minuts? Was this delay and the imposed delay of the ambulance a major contributing cause to the deathof the victim.

The arrested criminals are facing a charge of 1st degree murder as the result of the victim’s death!. Available Life saving services were denied the dying victim by the Poolice deeming “standard operational procedures took precedence.

The accused, in their defense could argue that if the victim had been subject to immediate medical assistance, his life could have been saved, and they would be facing less serious charges, such as an assault with a deadly weapon etc.

They were no longer on the premises as was reported to the police, so they did not in any way hinder the rendering of First Aid to the victim. Police were soley responsible for the delat in withholding the life giving assistance, just around the Corner.

Frank sadly you are correct and IMHO this will see the murders getting a soft sentence as their tax payer funded lawyer argues everyting from potty training problems to us whites being the cause to the TOW stress related to the point you raised.

Note that Sharples and Turia and the usual suspects are very quiet. Not a peep out of them about ‘THEIR PEOPLE”

Meanwhile the Socialists run around like headless chooks pretending to do something when in realitiy they are scared witless to take the appropriate actions.

Thanks Adam. I found Trotter’s piece by googling “stuff Trotter”. But seriously, what did he say that was wrong?

Since you and philu have been link-whoring already, I’ll mention that my view — as posted elsewhere — is close to Trotter’s view that the electoral consequences of reawakening the abortion sleeping giant may be significant. And not to the Nat’s advantage.

If abortion becomes a live election issue, then both sides, as well as the media, will be striving to ensure that every candidate’s position is known, given that the vote will be a ‘conscience’ vote. This could impact on the final outcome of the election, should the views of the predominantly white and male National Party list not reflect those of the voters. Don’t you agree?

On Chris Trotter, the thing that pisses me off most, pdm, is that rags like the DomPost publish him but no matter how repugnant he gets, there is never the slightest attempt at balance, or a refutation or a rebuttal. How many people actually get to read the excellent takedowns ( and takeaparts) of Trotter on “No, Minister” (and “Adam Smith”). The bloody socialists KNOW that there are ignorant masses who gradually get more and more poisoned by their lies as long as the dosage is repeated over and over. I include Tim (“Emmeline”) Pankhurst and the DomPost Editorial team in that category, in their unashamed enabling of the bloody-handed Trotter.

By the way, I cannot believe that Trotter is inactive on the blogs, but he seems to not have the spine to identify himself and submit to an identifiable beating in a forum like this. I suspect some of the more prominent lefty trolls with nom-de-plumes, of being Chris Trotter, John Minto, and Nicky Hager (who likewise do not seem to poke their identifiable ugly faces above the parapet).

adam: I agree. My partner pointed that out to me this morning, and I read it without surprise. This is the Chris Trotter who thinks that corruption is acceptable so long as it is directed at returning Labour to power – the small evil of corruption is preferable to the vastly worse evil of a National government. He is using his opinion column to overtly campaign for Labour, and creating lies in doing so. I cannot remember the exclusions in the EFA, but I wonder whether this column could be argued to have the intent of amusing and entertaining (were those the words), v’s being an election advertisement.

In short, it is what I expect from Trotter, which makes it no less reprehensible. I completely agree with you that it does NZ Inc no benefit in making this into an election issue. The sooner that National come out and say ‘The law appears to be badly drafted, we will introduce an amendment to the law that legalises the current position (abortion on demand up to and including second trimester), and make that the subject of a conscience vote in the house”, the sooner this goes away as an election issue.

PhilBest and other Trotter-haters, did you not see the statement by the Editor of ‘The Independent’, no less, announcing the new look Independent…

“We still carry the much-revered opinion of Chris Trotter and our old mate Chalkie. There are some things you just don’t tamper with.”

I’ll agree that he’s provocative — it seems to work well for his ‘brand’ — but his continued general popularity begs the question: is there something you guys are missing? And lay on the negative kharma for that if it makes you feel better, but it won’t change anything.

What Trotter did in my opinion as I stated in my post was, apart from continually adopting a patronising stance to women, to imply that Justice Miller was akin to the Taleban, that Catholics and evangelicals were akin to the Taleban, that the National Party was in thrall to the religious right who were the equivalent of the Taleban. In fact he displayed an arrogance and intolerant view of anyone he does not hold his world view IMHO.

Further, he deliberately set out to poison the political well by seeking to make abortion and to a lesser extent religious beliefs an election issue. These are issues that have effectively destroyed much of politics in the US for example. We do not need to do the same here.

He sought to smear Key and National, you obviously have no problem with that – well I do.

BTW as noted on my blog I am socially liberal, not socially conservative – I am economically liberal as well, but I suspect you would define that as economically to the right

I hope National are on this quickly. The more I think about this the more worried I get. The last thing we need is this as an election issue – it is a gift to the left. Unfortunately some senior folk in the National party have views on this issue that are not in line with a large proportion of the population. Not saying that National on average are out of line, but that the media will focus on the one front bencher who has a view that most NZers don’t agree with. This is an issue that doesn’t win votes, but certainly can lose them. And when you’re on 55% in the polls, odds are you’re going to lose a lot more than you win.

All we need now is for Bill English to come out and say that he would like to look at this, and that philosophically his Catholic upbringing tells him that abortion is wrong. We can then watch 75% of the female vote, and probably 45% of the male vote, desert the National party.

Somebody better jump on this very quickly. We need legislation to fix this before the election, or a very clear statement from the National party that this will not in fact be a conscience vote, and some drafted legislation that is visible before the election, that National commit to support through parliament. And that legislation needs to have no funny business at all in it – it needs to make it clear that status quo is what we will be having.

BTW I am not a Trotter hater as such, as I said in my post:-

Adam used to regard Trotter as just a socialist, trapped in a time warp, with an overly romantic view of socialism – perhaps pondering his days in Dunedin student flats, keeping warm by dreaming of the revolution and singing the Internationale.

Latterly, he saw Trotter as someone who occasionally, very occasionally seemed to have something relevant to say, though not something Adam tended to find himself in agreement with for the most part.

Right of way is Way of Right

I see the Supreme Court has allowed Susan Couch the right to sue the Dept of Corrections over the decision to grant parole to William Bell.

This is a landmark decision, and should a degreee of culpability be attributed to the Corrections Department, it should act as a driver to re-examine the procedures and allow a more robust screening of potential parolees.

I am quite sure the victims of Graham Burton will be watching with interest!!

PaulL, I don’t know whether you saw my 12.07pm post, but what you say is very much in line with my view that there may be unintended consequences of stirring the sleeping giant of abortion. DPF may know — it’s his line of trade — but I suspect that the (vast) majority of the population will be in favour of reasonably liberal availability (up to 16 weeks, say).

Since this will be a conscience vote it won’t be merely a matter of focussing attention on “the one front bencher who has a view that most NZers don’t agree with.” Oh no. Both sides, along with the media, will be scrutinising the positions of every cnadidate with any chance of winning a seat. Intensely. That’s how it was last time. Because when the conscience votes are counted, they’re all equal.

It will be very interesting to see how predominantly male National (in terms of candidates) stacks up compared to much more diverse Labour. And everybody will be watching.

John Key will have to make it clear that there will be no ‘NZ Taliban’ influencing NZ law on abortion.
As I have blogged, abortion is an issue that transceds prty politics.
But Key and National will have to be sharp to stop Trotter and others from using it as a stick to attack some mythical beast.
Full marks for him for trying. It shows how devious the left are.

It seesm to me that election 08 is going to be a 2 horse race except for the Hori separatists who will vote for the Hori party.

Its a old story when the chips are down its the hip pocket that rules and decides the tick in the polling booth.

The greens and the other minors will struggle to get traction as the citizens focus on basic issues.

When the economies going well then citizens feel more relaxed to give support to the fringe parties.

But when they are suffering they want to make sure their vote counts and their voice is heard.

IMHO Wnnie will be toast Anderton and Dunne will struggle and Rodders hope is that the Nats give him a free pass in Epsom

Trotter is one of the most “Fiskable” writers imaginable, but you will never see the sort of takeaparts of Trotter that are done on the blogosphere, within the pages of the CominternAgitpropDomPost. And could you IMAGINE ANY op-ed writer in ANY NZ paper remotely comparable with P J O’Rourke or Cal Thomas or Ann Coulter? The most enjoyable Bob Jones was a goner long ago, along with Agnes-Mary Brooke……..let alone anyone who could be described as remotely as far right as Trotter is to the left……

Today I have received in the mail the contact information for Heather Roy.
The envelope has the Parliamentary crest and nothing else.
The letter has neither Parliamentary crest nor party authorisation but the fridge magnet does have a Parliamentary crest. Since I am not in the Wellington area which Heather Roy ‘services’, I can only assume it is all to promote her profile and is therefore Election advertising – a fact which is supported by the letter telling she has been there since 2002, but has waited until now to tell me in Election year.
But I guess the use and non-use of the crest – a shot each way – is reflected by her photo on both the letter and the magnet, hair parting to the left on one and to the right on the other although both the same photo – yep, a hard to follow ACT.

Mr. Trotter has the typical black and white view of an ideologue. He seems to think that everyone in the labour party will be pro-choice and everyone in National will be pro-life. What utter crap. There will be many of each persuasion in both parties. The internal debate in parliament would tear the major parties apart. In addition, the general abortion debate will be rancorous and irrational – I draw your attention to the current debates on the issue in Kiwiblog and the Standard. Multiply this by a million.

Much as I dislike Helen Clark’s policies, she is a consummate politician and she knows all this. Expect her to kick this one rapidly to touch (ie a select committee) if it fails to die a natural death.

“The Independent” is hardly left-wing and it was the Editor of that rag, not the “the CominternAgitpropDomPost”, that I was quoting. I don’t know about counterbalance in the DomPost, but since the Independent depends on pandering to the business view of the world, I don’t think it’s an issue there.

Now, I’d have to say, in truth and not just to score a cheap point, that I can’t, because we don’t have any of the intellectual calibre of O’Rouke (who I read myself). If you mean comparable in ideological terms, I would point to my hometown periodical, the Herald. Saturday mornings now feature boring Roughan and 1980s throwback O’Sullivan at the top of the columnists’ page, and we have Garth George to enlighten us (NOT!) during the week as well. Granted, Brian Rudman has very recently been granted a little number on Wednesdays, and there’s the nice but wet novelist guy on Saturdays as well, but the commentary in the Herald would be predominantly to your liking rather than mine, methinks.

Adam, I deliberately didn’t mention you, as you weren’t frothing about Trotter in general like the others, and I had picked that up. But I would say that I didn’t quite read today’s piece the same way that you did — by Taleban I think he meant the Christian Right. Might see him tonight so could check.

And freethinker, I could name a number of closet queers in the National caucuses over the years, but won’t. It’s not what I call “freethinking”.

PS It turns out it wasn’t a hacker on my blog, even though it looked like there was a little smiley facebelow the redbaiter quote. I’m still pondering the significance of this. Has redbaiter departed the mortal coil?

Chap was lucky he didn’t live in Australia, where the Coroner is currently investigating why Police chased a mentally ill man who was “behaving strangely” (peeling the bark off trees and chasing butterflies) to his home, pushed past his father and shot him four times (because by this time the guy was so spooked he was waving a knife. Note the Police here are aimed with tasers and capsicum spray).

Then when a neighbour, a doctor with experience in treating gunshot wounds, offered to help he was repeatedly warned off by Police because they didn’t want him to “contaminate a crime scene”.

Then when the victim’s funeral was held – resulting in a huge public turn-out, including myself – they turned up and handed out parking tickets.

Law enforcement – always on hand when it’s really needed. Not.

MacDoctor, agree that the parties will split. Labour probably a bit more in favour, National probably a bit less. But the Muslim joker in Labour, for example, wouldn’t be likely to be voting in favour of abortion.

I don’t think that pushing to select committee will help. If it is going to be decided after the election, and it is going to be decided by conscience vote, then every MP must be scrutinised to determine what the likely outcome will be. A good many people in NZ care about this far more than they care about tax cuts, about WFF, about our economic performance, our schools or our health system. In short, as long as the issue is not properly put to bed it will drive the votes of a large chunk of the population.

And I don’t believe that Helen will take it off the table. Ugly and painful though it may be, the reality is that if this is a live issue during the election then it will be too Labour’s benefit. As you say, Helen is an astute politician, she will do what she needs to do. The problem here is that Labour is at 30% or so in the polls, National at 55% or so. Even if the population are roughly 50/50 in terms of their beliefs, that would mean that a bunch of people move from National to Labour. I suspect the population are more like 70/30 in favour of the status quo, so that makes it even worse for National.

As I said earlier, National need to find a way to take this off the agenda, and to do it very very quickly. Anything else is going to cost an awful lot.

Just to be contrary, I’ve had excellent dealings (as a dog owner) with WCC dog control & rangers. Not to say that I don’t think there are some things they could do a LOT better (like fenced dog exercise areas in most suburbs – I was asked recently why I walk my dog in the Botanic Gardens & not an official dog area – answer simple – Bot gardens a minute’s walk down the road, nearest exercise area a 15 minute drive.

“This is the most despicable thing I think I have seen in my lifetime in this country, I really do, certainly by any Government . . . this overwhelms me. I cannot believe it happened.”

He is considering an anti-Government ad campaign to “flagrantly break the law and have them on”.

Clark is fucked, it matters not if you like Jones he has a great feel for the mood of the people, the similarities between Clark and Muldoon are scary.

A few years ago they did thuis & I made a submission to have Magpie Lawn designated an official area over certain hours of the day (early morning & evening), the Lawn is generally used as a mulch processing area by the gardeners, it’s boggy & regularly churned by tractor tracks.

During summer, it is frequented by picnickers, but it’s half a km from toilet facilites, yet the council (despite sounding sympathetic) decided that to use Magpie Lawn for dogs, even in unsociable hours, would deny any Bot Garden visitors, the chance to picnic in peace.

Cr Sue Piper told me (off the record) that she was concerned that picnickers would have nowhere to go – seeing as just about anywhere else in the gardens would be nicer for a picnic – the Dell, the Soundshell, the PICNIC tables near the playground… I asked her is she’d ever actually visited the Gardens.

The proposal was denied – there were 8 objections & some 250 submissions in favour. Go figure.

A few years ago, dog rangers began turning up to catch dog owners letting their dogs free, I had a very pleasant chat with one of them (who was abused quite unfairly by another dog owner) he told me they only visited the Bot Gardens if gardeners complained about faeces everywhere.

Moral: Pick up the poo & run free.

yeh I’m with Bob Jones. I just heard Geoff Leland acting as apologist for Labour on Jim Mora’s pissweak excuse for radio and one of Mora’s panel did ask whether Leland needed to be noting his financial agent’s address as he sounded like a party political broadcast…National Radio doesn’t deserve my taxes when it’s got a commie as political editor (yes, he is/was) a Labour press release regurgitator for a newsroom and a boom box for Government love between 1-5pm…

To be honest Lindsay I don’t have a lot of time for the advertising rubbish bin that is Newstalk, Radio Live is populated by loonies, and Radio Sport – well, ’nuff said. So it leaves me with Jim (who appears to be a nice bloke, so I blame his producer(s) who are clearly so far left they’re about to fall off their flat earth)

On a black Friday the supreme court gives the right to SUE corrections, What a precedent, no way not in corrupt NZ, but watch crown law strike it fearing an avalanche of claims. Lawyers lips are drooling with anticipation and greed.
Where do I start .Oh that’s right CYFS, Kangaroo Court and the blue brotherhood keystone cops. When is the innocence project to commence? Funk the election SUE the bastards, judges, cops, PM’s, Attorney General’s etc…etc,,,

D4J, Wilson, Dear Leader and assorted socialist power mongers must feel rather betrayed today, I though the supreme court was their gift of justice and wisdom to the country. Fancy the court turning on those that gave it life, how fitting almost poetic justice. Whats the bet Dear Leader starts to talk about the good old days of the privy council. Anyhow well done to the supreme court there is still some hope for this place yet.

Yes, this Green, who has been labeled a commie, a socialist, a pinko, a watermelon, or whatever by various suspects on this blog, doesn’t give a shit about Freeview. If I want television channels, I’m happy to pay for access to them.

toad your standards of language have really taken a nosedive since you started posting on kiwiblog. YOu used to be well-researched, polite and patient, now it’s:

It’s not bad for a start, but I suggest lose the ‘one’ , and ‘some’ and replace ‘orifice’ with something a little more – shall we say – ‘Anglo-Saxon’. (hint – ‘anal’ or anything pertaining to it really inflames D4J but ‘orifice’ just excites him)

But all in all not a bad attempt.

When indeed? Anyone heard anything? I was glad to hear of it starting but being embedded deep within academia rather than out in the real world as they often are overseas, is anything going to actually happen (other than a bunch of PhD students chasing grants, that is)?

Speaking of colourful comments, I’ve just discovered the demerits page. What can I say? Some of the most intelligent pleasent commenters I’ve read here are listed as abusive and disruptive. Clearly I don’t read every single comment here. I’m sure there’s a lesson in that for all of us, but it might also be just a reflection of the mood of a moderator on any given day.

Whatever it is, I’m going to forget that such a page even exists.
