This is off topic, but seeing Roger Nome is here:

Hi Roger Nome, I’ve been wanting to mention something to you ever since I read the latest “Listener”.

Peter Conway, CTU Chief Economist, writes a letter to the editor complaining about a recent editorial on employment levels of bureaucrats versus employment levels throughout the economy, quoting a whole lot of obfuscatory statistics and making a snide accusation about the Listener going by John Key sound bites and not checking its facts. The Listener Editor makes a response below the letter; “The spreadsheet supplied by Mr Conway reveals………” and concludes “The Listener, therefore, stands by its editorial……..”……..

And I thought, how TYPICAL of the Lefty obfuscation of the past that we are familiar with…….how TYPICAL that would be of our dear old Roger Nome……….

Are you by any chance Peter Conway, CTU Chief Economist, Roger Nome?

I’ll swear I heard in the video below some Chinese accent say “Knee high” just before she fell.

No, there are 2 Chinese girls behind the counter and she is saying ‘Ni hao’ (poorly, but that may be the quality of the video feed).

Of course, she should have pluralised it to ‘Ni Men Hao’. (Yes, I do visit/work in China and know a little Mandarin).

Oh, and seeing DPF hasn’t done a “general debate” thread today, and Roger Nome is making snide comments about the christian right, I’d like him to suck on THIS from Melanie Phillips:

And the root cause of that erosion is ‘militant atheism’ which, in junking religion, has destroyed our sense of anything beyond our material selves and the here and now and, through such hyper-individualism, paved the way for the onslaught on bedrock moral values expressed through such things as family breakdown and mass fatherlessness, educational collapse, widespread incivility, unprecedented levels of near psychopathic violent crime, epidemic drunkenness and drug abuse, the repudiation of all authority, the moral inversion of victim culture, the destruction of truth and objectivity and a corresponding rise in credulousness in the face of lies and propaganda — and intimidation and bullying to drive this agenda into public policy.

The financial crisis was brought about essentially by a public which threw away all notions of prudence and committed itself to spending today what it could never afford to pay back tomorrow, and a banking, regulatory and political sector which ruthlessly and cynically exploited and encouraged such catastrophic irresponsibility with a criminal disregard of the ruinous consequences for the poor. The financial crisis and our social meltdown are thus combining to form a perfect cultural storm.

The link between all that and the US presidential election is – as Oliver himself acknowledges – the figure of Sarah Palin. It seems to me that the reason she has sparked such an unprecedented campaign of lies, smears, abuse and dangerously unhinged hatred (if you think that’s an exaggeration, just look at the readers’ posts on this very site) is because, as I wrote in the Mail on Monday, she stands against the tide of secular nihilism in the culture wars. Oliver and I dare say Hitchens (although I have not discussed this with him) may be shoulder to shoulder with me on foreign policy but they stand on the other side from me in the culture wars – what I see as nihilism, I suspect they view as progressive — and it is no coincidence that they both stand also for militant (or in Oliver’s case, rather less militant) atheism which they assume (falsely, in my view) is synonymous with rationality. Palin’s evangelical Christianity, and the moral and social positions that flow from that faith, would therefore strike them as beyond appalling. That’s why Oliver sees her as embodying

anti-intellectualism, insularity, social intolerance and anti-rationalism.

For me, by contrast, although the nature of her faith and the churches with which she has been associated certainly make me uneasy, they do not alarm me. That’s because I regard evangelicals as allies in the fight to defend authentic liberal, and thus moral, values which I believe are rooted in Judeo-Christian thinking. I’m sure that, had I been around during the Victorian era, I would not have cared either for the evangelicals then trying to convert everyone to Christianity – but the fact remains that it was through their faith that they campaigned against slavery and for just about every social reform that we now think of as enlightened and progressive. For me, ‘anti-intellectualism, insularity, social intolerance and anti-rationalism’ have indeed been unleashed upon our society – not by Christian evangelicals but by the forces of secular fundamentalism and bigotry through such phenomena as scientism, political correctness and post-modernism.

I don’t much care whether Palin believes in a hundred ridiculous things before breakfast — because what she stands for is a defence of bedrock western moral values against the nihilistic onslaught……”

I don’t know any Mandarin, and I understand that the pitch and inflection with which they say each vowel also affects the meaning of the word……….

But I think I have heard some story about the various meanings of the mandarin words that sound a bit like “knee high” and I though one of them was “fuck you”………

In theory it affects the meaning, but a lot of native Mandarin speakers are a bit lazy. The inflections end up being very flat and indistinct. Meaning is often conveyed by the context you are in. It’s the same in NZ. If you went to a pub and ordered a bear, you’d get a beer (not an ursine carnivore).

Lazy speakers are common to most cultures however- I’m sure I’ve met many people in the Southern USA, Australia and NZ that only use 3 of the 5 vowels in most of their speech. [:)]

Just because the Left is in the gutter is no reason to join them there. In fact its a good reason to stay out.

All is NOT fair in love and war. Some things are always wrong no matter the circumstances.

Posting this was in bad taste. Enjoying it is just sick.

And before any of the people posting here who still live with their mothers start calling me soft or a lefty, please read through my previous posts. I think the Clark regime is by far and away the most truly evil government in NZ history, and a dangerous threat to our freedoms, and I’m conservative enough to make George W Bush look like a liberal.

But people feeding off their hate for Clark while getting their jollies watching her fall are morally no better than the people they are opposed to, worse perhaps.

It was slapstick -pure comedy. Charlie Chaplin made a career out of doing this sort of thing and The Leader is ending a career doing the same. The reaching out … to The Leader’s children … The Leader’s people … and falling flat on the dental negligence. Powerfull metaphor.

The Leader wasn’t hurt. It was funny. In the circumstances it would have been just as funny if it had happened to John Key (JK/JfK/9/11/global conspiracy, hampster eater etc etc), the Pope, your best friend, Uncle Tom Cobbly and most of all George Dubya.

Its not like it was a tragedy. The Leader didn’t spill someone’s beer or fire a plate of vindaloo over that guy’s kit. She didn’t crush a small child, or worse, a Takahe or some obscure native vegetation. The author of “… [whatever the stupid book was] …) didn’t have to terrify a startled nation by announcing that he was “in charge”.

Ye Gods.

Interesting however, that The Leader tried to take that innocent bystander down too.

For heaven’s sake. She wasn’t injured. You’re quite right though, in saying that if The Leader had been injured there would have been howls of glee. Some have commented that we are only human and all fall over from time to time. I agree with this, but have been trying to think why I find the video funny.

I think what makes this amusing is that its symbolic of the fact that despite 9 years of her rule and so many controversies, nothing has brought her down. Yet gravity, an innocent by stander has done us proud.

BTW, I’m pleased she wasn’t wearing a skirt at the time.

Priceless! Don’t recall seeing this on TV1 News or TV3? If it had been Key (as was Brash in 2005 walking plank, stockcar etc) then full coverage. How can you trust someone who can’t keep one foot in front of other. Did John Key lay the lino back in the early 80s while a student? I remember the repeated showings of Rodney tripping approaching the dais when he assumed the helm. Why not more of the “Clumsy Helen” on TV? Nice headline along lines of “PM front foots global credit crisis”

I’m part of that Facebook kitten-killing group and would just like to say we are completely serious. Given that the Greens are likely to get at least 120,000 votes, that’s a lot of kitty euthanasia we will have to perform after the election. Our 50 members have a quota of 3000 kittens each (we want to make sure) and the smart ones among us have been stockpiling them for some time now. I personally have over 1500 in my garage, and with a simple application of hose to exhaust pipe + selleys on the door frames will meet half my responsibility in a couple of hours max.

After our assured success we plan to expand into other projects – we’ll shoot some fish in a barrel, kill the goose that lays the golden egg, and squash some ants, like ants. And we’ll send the whales and dolphins to go swim with the fishes, if you know what I mean.

Toads will be covered with Yorkshire pudding, baked, and served with potatoes and gravy.

Very symbolic of Helen’s election campaign. However, perhaps unsuprisingly, the media in this country has been very reluctant to draw any such analogies, no matter how applicable.
One can’t help but wonder if the National Party leader would have enjoyed similar sympathetic media treatment, had this fate befallen him.

I say this, with Don Brash’s ‘walking the plank’ incident in mind; where he had to endure endless jibes from every corner of New Zealand’s media contingent, for the simple and innocent act of walking across a plank to board a boat, which one has to say does seem more sensible and dignified than attempting to jump on board…

So to the media I offer this challenge: once, just once draw that analogy of a falling Labour leader, even if only in a desperate, last ditch attempt to uphold the feeble and laughable pretence of a acting as a non-partisan and balanced journalistic outfit, charged only with informing New Zealanders to the best of it’s ability….

I am 66, a totally National voter for all my life, even Muldoon.
However I am saddened by the vitriol towards people who have an almost goulish delight at someone tripping up.
I can’t stand HC, abhor her policies and believe it is time for a change.
Come on anti-Helen supporters, you have got to realize that life is a battle of politics and accepting diverse opinions.. As you get older, you mellow and focus on the people area. Getting on with people, even with people who aren’t of your political stripe.
Pouring derision on a person falling over is just the lowest. I know I will get pilloried by some of the immature,nutter bloggers but so be it.
I am a local body councillor, our authority has a Mayor,whom I admire and respect, supporting the Labour list but voting for a high profile National person in the electorate while another friend is life long Labour. We are mature enough to accept our differences and get on.
Hate is horrible, it corrodes the holder as much as the person under attack.
When the election is over there has to be some coming together. I would be the first to admit that Labor/HC have created much of that nastiness with people like Clark,Cullen,Mallard and Hodgson.
We have more class fellow people of the centre-right.
