Hail and Snow

Just outside Waiouru and it is snowing and hailing. Very cold outside.

BREAKING NEWS

Scientists have predicted that global warming could end tomorrow when the election results are released.

The immediate cessation of bullshit and hot air produced in the last 9 years is the likely cause of the end of global warming.

Unnamed sources are saying that Jeanette Fitzimmons will shortly release a statement about the dangers of Global Cooling and the need for a billion dollar insulation fund to protect vunerable New Zealanders.

Fisiani – of course, a brass monkey was a device for stacking cannon balls in the old days, and “cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey” related to the different expansion rates of brass and iron, which in very cold weather led to all the cannon balls popping off the brass…but I guess no need to let the facts get in the way of a colourful picture.

Ah, well in that case, well said. I’m still a bit nervous – a bit like that big presentation when you know your prep is all in order and you are sure it should go well, but there’s still that little fear that something might just go wrong on the day. All evidence says we’re going to be in good shape, but I’ll be on tenterhooks until it is actually over.

Some say the cannon ball storing device was a square scalloped laid on the floor of the fighting ships.
And I also understand the correct phrase was “to freeze the balls on a brass manque” because the moisture on the ship of a deck was prevalent in cold weather (snow and sleet) and so the pile froze into place.

However, one of the delights in language is that many theories about and its difficult to prove one more right or wrong than another.
Most seem to agree that the difference between the two coefficients of expansion was insufficient to cause the balls to roll off.
Here is another explanation:

When black powder cannons were still in use the sailors used a brass box to carry the powder ashore. This box was known as a Brass Monkey as it replaced the small boy who used to retrieve the powder from below decks who was called a Powder Monkey. When ashore the Brass Monkey would be placed on the ground and the steel canon balls would be stacked in a pyramid around the monkey. When it got cold overnight the brass would contract quicker than the steel causing a warp of the stack and the balls would fall off. This is where we get the term “Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.”
If enough of us came up with another story that might become the “real story” of the brass monkey.

I know what you mean. We were visiting near Raetihi to take a look at grandchild no 10. We got hail, a couple of times but no snow where we were but there was plenty down fairly low on Ruapehu.

When we got home it was reaffirmed how good the weather in Hawkes Bay is.

Twisting the brass monkey theme slightly Jamie McIntosh now a very large prop for the All Blacks was on sky earlier saying how happy he was in Scotland.

All the rest of the All Blacks were in thermals and he was in a singlet. Mnd you the weather in the Catlins where he comes from is similar to Edinburgh in Autumn. I got the impression he found Hong Kong rather warm.

Enjoy the day tomorrow. I hope that the polls are right and the blue team carries the day. If I am lucky I will get to wish the present Prime Minister all the best for her future as a past prime minister!
