I don’t think Robin Bain would have typed this. Given his age, and his training, and his subsequent career as a school teacher, I think he’d have used correct grammar, i.e. he’d have included a comma, thus: “Sorry, you are the only one who deserved to stay.” On the other hand, someone of David’s age, a pupil of the New Zealand school system of the 1980s, might understandably leave the comma out. Robin bain was apparently a voracious reader. A review of his writings, if any survived, might even show whether he regularly used a comma in such situations. Likewise a review of David Bain’s writings might reveal whether he routinely failed to use a comma.

Fiji’s current problems bring me to think about failed states and their place in the whole war on terror.
The war on terror really is trying to save states from collapsing into being ungovernable. Then enter the nihilists,the gangsters,the spectres of James Bond time.
I don’t claim that Al Queada has anything to do with thye Fiji crisis,l but it certainly helps to grow the number of failed states.
Let’s list a few – Thailand(A funny country at the best of times),Nepal(Maoists)Papua New Guinea,Somalia(!!!!!),Sudan,Myanmar,North Korea,Pakistan(A big worry)Afghanistan,Tadjikistan etc(Former Central Asian Soviet republics)Georgia. The list goes on- the whole situation is creepy. Beyond those states we have states that claim to be democracies but only as long as it suits the leader – Russia,Singapore, Saudi Arabia,Iran,Venezuela,Bolivia,Ecuador,Serbia etc etc
Do we here in the South Pacific believe we should be involved in restoring the rule of law in Fiji ? Who is the good guy in the Fiji situation. Initially it was Indian v Fijian. Now what ?
It almost gets you down !!!
Here in the South Pacific we are surrounded by failed states-Fiji,Tonga,Soloman Islands,PNG. What do we do ?

There are some very intelligent and well educated people who post on this blog, yet the standard of proofreading suggests otherwise. I wouldn’t want to reach any conclusions about authorship based on the omission of a comma.

Furthermore, the author might have meant the sentence as it reads without the comma: “I am sorry [that] you are the only one … “

New topic for a minute if I may.

The magnificent wild horses are to be removed from St James Station, according to today’s news. They have been there 80 years. The family selling the station is mustering them and will sell some. Others will die. DOC’s “no introduced animals” policy is unquestionably the cause of this action.

This poses problems for the Left.

The Labour Government took St James Station back from farmers in the oppressive attempt under former Labour DOC minister Carter to drive sheep (the merinos that produce the wool ministers bleat about in hyping our exports) from the South Island high country. I say oppressive because of the campaign by the Government against runholders, which was initially inspired and fired up by some foreign non-agricultural academics within NZ. I say oppressive also because it came when runholders were under heavy pressure from cyclically low prices.

Labour trumpeted the St James takeover as a triumph. I think H1 even mentioned the acquisition. linking it to a mention of Carter in her farewell speech, or in one of her series of farewell interviews.

The problem for Labour is that there will be a surge of protest from the animal lovers and animal rights mob who generally support the Left. Stallions, sick, and aggressive horses are to be killed. There will be an uproar around the sentimental countries of the world.

On the other side you have not only Carter, an icon of the PC, “progressive” Left, but also greenies who want everything off the high country that wasn’t there before white settlers arrived.

Enjoy Labour’s dilemma.

It tells what the new anti parental correction law that John Key supported actually means.

Maybe Key wants ACT to have more MPs next election. They will be getting my vote as they are the only party which puts parental rights ahead of some left wing ideology of Bradford.

Key is going to look pretty silly if Goff at some stage decides that Labour has learned its lesson and should have listened to the people and supports a change to this anti parental correction legislation.
